17 Sebbene egli fosse uno dei nostri e avesse avuto la sua parte del nostro ministero.

Dal libro dei Dialoghi di san Gregorio Papa
Libro 3, cap. 31
Il re Ermenegildo, figlio di Leovigildo, re dei Visigoti, fu convertito dall'eresia Ariana alla fede cattolica dalle prediche del venerabile Leandro, vescovo di Siviglia, al quale io sono legato da molto tempo da stretta amicizia. Il padre, Ariano, per farlo ritornare alla medesima sua eresia, si sforzò di guadagnarlo con promesse e di atterrirlo con minacce. Ma rispondendo egli con incrollabile fermezza di non potere abbandonare mai la vera fede dopo averla conosciuta, il padre irritato lo privò del regno e lo spogliò di tutti i beni. Ma non avendo neppure così potuto scuotere il suo coraggio, lo rinchiuse in una angusta prigione, stretti il collo e le mani con ferri. Il giovane re Ermenegildo cominciò allora a disprezzare il regno terreno e a cercare con ardente desiderio quello celeste, e, coperto di cilizio, giacente fra le catene, a indirizzare preghiere a Dio onnipotente perché lo fortificasse; inoltre a disprezzare tanto più sublimemente la gloria del mondo che passa, quanto più aveva riconosciuto nella sua prigione il nulla di ciò che può essere rapito.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Al sopraggiungere poi della festa di Pasqua, il perfido padre gli mandò nel silenzio profondo d'una notte un vescovo Ariano, affinché ricevesse la comunione eucaristica dalle sue mani sacrileghe, e con ciò meritasse di rientrare nella grazia paterna. Ma egli, consacratosi tutto a Dio, appena gli si avvicinò, rimproverò, come doveva, il vescovo Ariano, e respinse da sé, con giuste rimostranze, tanta perfidia; perché, sebbene esternamente giacesse legato, dentro di sé però si teneva sicuro in tutta l'elevatezza dell'anima. Ritornato pertanto a lui il vescovo, l'Ariano padre fremé di rabbia e mandò subito dei suoi sicari ad uccidere lì stesso dove giaceva, il fortissimo Confessore di Dio; il che venne eseguito. Infatti, appena entrati, gli spaccarono la testa con un colpo di accetta; ma togliendogli così la vita del corpo, non valsero a uccidere se non ciò che l'eroica vittima aveva costantemente disprezzato nella sua persona. A dimostrare la sua vera gloria, non mancarono prodigi e miracoli. Poiché nel silenzio della notte cominciò subito a sentirsi un canto di salmi presso il corpo del medesimo Re e Martire; tanto più veramente Re, in quanto che fu Martire.

Lettura 6
Alcuni narrano anche che di notte tempo vi apparirono delle lampade accese; onde avvenne che. il suo corpo cominciò giustamente a venerarsi da tutti i fedeli come di un Martire. Il perfido padre, poi, e parricida, tocco da pentimento, deplorò ciò che aveva fatto, ma però non si pentì fino ad ottenere la salvezza. Poiché riconobbe sì la fede cattolica essere la vera, ma trattenuto dal timore del suo popolo, non ebbe il coraggio di convertirsi. Caduto malato e ridotto agli estremi, si fece premura di raccomandare al vescovo Leandro, che prima aveva crudelmente perseguitato, il re suo figlio Reccaredo, che lasciava nell'eresia, affinché colle sue esortazioni operasse anche in lui quanto aveva fatto col fratello. Fatta questa raccomandazione, morì. Dopo la sua morte il re Reccaredo, seguendo non il perfido padre, ma bensì il fratello Martire, abiurò gli errori dell'eresia Ariana, e condusse alla vera fede tutta la nazione dei Visigoti, non permettendo di militare nel suo regno a nessuno il quale non temesse di essere nemico di Dio restando infetto d'eresia. Né è a meravigliare che il fratello d'un Martire divenisse predicatore della vera fede; i meriti di lui lo aiutano ancora a ricondurre in grembo alla Chiesa di Dio onnipotente tanti altri.

Se consideriamo, fratelli carissimi, quali e quanti beni ci vengono promessi in cielo, stimiamo spregevoli quelli che abbiamo sulla terra. Poiché la sostanza terrena, paragonata all'eterna felicità, è un peso, non un aiuto. La vita temporale, paragonata alla vita eterna, merita piuttosto il nome di morte che di vita. Infatti lo stesso quotidiano decadere del corpo che altro è se non una lenta morte? Ma quale lingua può ridire, quale intelletto comprendere quanto sia il gaudio della patria superna : essere associati ai cori degli angeli, contemplare con questi beatissimi spiriti la gloria del Creatore, vedere Dio faccia a faccia, contemplare la luce indefettibile, non essere più turbato da alcun timore di morte, godere una felicità inalterabile, infinita?
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

Ma l'animo si infiamma al sentire queste cose, e già desidera ardentemente stare là dove spera di godere senza fine. Ma non si può giungere a grandi premi se non attraverso grandi fatiche. Di conseguenza anche Paolo, grande predicatore, dice: «Non sarà coronato, se non colui che avrà combattuto secondo le regole». La grandezza delle ricompense dunque allieti il nostro spirito, ma non lo spaventi il travaglio del combattimento. Per questo la Verità dice a quelli che si accostano a lei: «Se uno viene a me e non odia suo padre e sua madre e la moglie e i figli e i fratelli e le sorelle, e perfino la sua vita, non può essere mio discepolo».

Lettura 9
Ma ci si deve chiedere come mai ci venga comandato di odiare i genitori e gli altri congiunti, mentre poi ci è prescritto di amare anche i nemici. E certo la Verità a proposito della moglie dice: «Quel che Dio ha unito, l'uomo non divida». E Paolo dice: «Uomini, amate le vostre mogli come anche Cristo ama la Chiesa». Ecco, il discepolo predica che bisogna amare la moglie, mentre il Maestro dice: «Chi non odia la moglie, non può essere mio discepolo». Forse che il giudice prescrive una cosa e il banditore ne annuncia un'altra? Oppure possiamo odiare e amare nel medesimo tempo? Però se valutiamo la forza del precetto, siamo in grado di fare l'una cosa e l'altra operando un giusto discernimento: amare cioè la moglie e quelli che ci sono uniti per parentela e che riconosciamo come prossimo: e ignorarli, quasi odiandoli e fuggendoli, qualora ci fossero di impaccio nel percorrere la via voluta da Dio.

Hermenegild, the son of Leovigild, King of the Visigoths, was turned from the Arian heresy to the Catholic Faith by the preaching of that most worshipful man Leander, Bishop of Seville, the same who was for a long season mine own familiar friend. Then his father, being himself an Arian, strove to bring him back to that heresy, first by offering him gifts, and then seeking to awe him by threatening. And when he answered alway that, having once had knowledge of the true faith, he never could forsake it, his father was wroth, and took away his kingdom from him, and plundered him of all his goods. And when not even so could he sap the manliness of his soul, he cast him into a most strait prison, having his neck and his hands in fetters of iron. And so that young King Hermenegild began to hold in little esteem an earthly kingdom, and to long exceedingly for an heavenly. Yea, he clothed himself in sackcloths in the prison, and as he lay bound therein, he poured forth supplications to Almighty God to give him strength. There he lay bound, having suffered the loss of all things, but his suffering made him but to esteem more worthless the glory of this world, which passeth away so easily.

The Bishop, therefore, went away again to that Arian father. And when he came to Leovigild, he waxed exceeding wroth, and sent his servants to kill God's faithful witness where he lay. Which thing was done for as soon as they came to him into the prison, they clave his head with an axe, and freed him from the dying life of this house of our tabernacle. And so they did to him all that which they that kill the body are able to do, and it was a thing which now of a long season he feared not, seeing that when they have done that, they have no more that they can do, but fearing rather Him Who, when He hath killed, hath power to cast both body and soul into hell. But God, to make manifest the glory of His servant, was pleased to work signs from heaven, for of a sudden the solemn swell of singing of Psalms was heard at that dead hour of night from round about the place where lay the body of the kingly martyr, kingly now in an higher and truer sense than the sense of earthly kingship, since he had witnessed a good confession for the truth, sealing it with his blood.

Come say, too, that lights were seen there that night. Wherefore it came to pass that the body of the martyr became the rightful object of reverence to all God's faithful people. The unbelieving father, murderer of his own child, was seized with remorse, and repented him of what he had done, but he sorrowed not unto salvation. For though he knew that the Catholic faith was true, he stood in fear of his people, and deserved not to attain unto it. He fell sick, and, when he was at the point of death, he made it his duty to recommend King Reccared his surviving son to the care of the Bishop Leander, whom aforetime he had grievously persecuted, that though Reccared was now left in heresy, the Bishop might work in him by his exhortations the same change that he had worked in his brother, which when Leovigild had said, he died. After his death, King Reccared took for his example not his unbelieving father but his martyred brother. He forsook the Arian heresy, and brought the whole nation of the Visigoths to believe in the true faith, so that he allowed no man in his kingdom to be an officer, who dared any longer range himself through heresy as an enemy of the Kingdom of God. Neither need we marvel that Reccared was a preacher of the faith, since he had had to his brother a martyr, for whose sake Almighty God hath helped him to bring back so many to the bosom of their Father Who is in heaven.

Dearly beloved brethren, if we consider what and how great things are promised unto us in heaven, all things which are upon earth grow poor to our mind. For when this world's goods are reckoned against the gladness above, they are found to be a clog rather than an help. This present life being compared to life eternal, ought rather to be called death than life. For what is the daily failing of our corruption but, as it were, a creeping death But what tongue is there that can tell, or what understanding that can comprehend how great is the rejoicing in the city above, where they have part with the choirs of Angels, where they stand with the most blessed spirits before the glory of the Creator, where they see the face of God present, where they behold the Incomprehensible Light, where they have no fear of death, and where they rejoice eternally incorruptible

A Roma, sulla via Appia, il natale dei santi Martiri Tibùrzio, Valeriàno e Màssimo, sotto l'Imperatore Alessàndro e il Prefetto Almàchio. Tra questi, i primi due, convertiti a Cristo per esortazione della beata Cecilia, e battezzati dal Papa sant'Urbano, in seguito, per la confessione della fede, percossi con bastoni, furono uccisi colla spada; Màssimo poi, cameriere del Prefetto, avendo anch'egli creduto in Cristo, commosso dalla loro fermezza, e confermato da un'angelica visione, fu battuto con verghe di piombo, finché non rese lo spirito.

April 14th 2026, the 26th day of the Moon, were born to better life:

On the morrow we keep the feast of the holy martyr Justin, the admirable philosopher. He had presented to the Emperors Marcus Antoninus Verus and Lucius Aurelius born Modus his second book in defence of our religion, and was then earnestly spreading the same at Rome by his disputations when he was accused of Christianity through the devices of Crescens the Cynic, whose life and infamous manners he had rebuked, and for a reward of his faithful speaking he received upon this day the crown of martyrdom.
Likewise at Rome, upon the Appian Way, under the Emperor Alexander and the Prefect Almachius, the holy martyrs Tiburtius, Valerian, and Maximus. Tiburtius and Valerian had been converted to Christ by the exhortations of blessed Cicely and baptized by the holy Pope Urban, and for the confession of their faith were cudgelled and beheaded. Maximus was a chamberlain of the Prefect, and was moved to believe in Christ by beholding the steadfastness of Tiburtius and Valerian, and being confirmed in the same faith by an apparition of angels, he was lashed to death with scourges loaded with lead.
