Lettura 4
Giustino, figlio di Prisco, di nazione Greco, nato a Flavianopoli di Siria nella Palestina, passò la adolescenza nello studio assiduo delle belle lettere. Divenuto uomo, fu preso da tale amore per la filosofia, che per conseguire la verità, diede il nome a tutte le sette esistenti di filosofi, scrutandone tutti gli insegnamenti. Ma non avendovi trovato che falsa scienza ed errori, illuminato in una celeste visione da un certo vecchio sconosciuto e di aspetto venerando, abbracciò la vera filosofia della fede cristiana. Da allora, con sempre fra le mani giorno e notte i libri della sacra Scrittura, l'animo suo nella meditazione di esse si accese di tale fuoco divino, che, acquistata con quella sua possente forza d'ingegno la scienza sublime di Gesù Cristo, scrisse moltissimi volumi per esporre e propagare sempre più la fede cristiana.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. La luce perpetua risplenderà per i tuoi Santi, o Signore,

Lettura 5
Fra le più celebri opere di Giustino si distinguono le due apologie della fede cristiana, ch'egli presentò, in pubblico senato, agli imperatori Antonino Pio e suoi figli, e a Marco Antonino Vero e Lucio Aurelio Commodo che perseguitavano crudelmente i Cristiani, ottenendo, dopo aver coraggiosamente e con eloquenza difesa la medesima fede, un editto pubblico dagli imperatori per cui la persecuzione ebbe un temperamento. Però Giustino non fu risparmiato. Perché accusato insidiosamente dal Cinico Crescente, la cui pessima vita e costumi egli aveva ripreso, venne arrestato dai soldati. Condotto al prefetto di Roma chiamato Rustico, avendogli questo domandato quale fosse la legge dei Cristiani, egli, davanti a molti testimoni. fece questa bella confessione della fede: La vera dottrina che noi cristiani osserviamo piamente, è questa: Credere in un Dio solo, fattore e creatore di tutto ciò che si vede e di quanto non si può vedere cogli occhi del corpo; e confessiamo che Gesù Cristo è il Figlio di Dio, preannunziato già dai profeti, e ch'egli verrà giudice del genere umano.

Lettura 6
E siccome Giustino nella sua prima apologia, per respingere le calunnie dei pagani, aveva esposto pubblicamente in quale modo i Cristiani si radunassero per celebrare i sacri misteri, e quali fossero i misteri di quelle assemblee, il presidente gli domandò in qual luogo si radunassero lui e gli altri Cristiani di quella Città. Ma Giustino, tacendo i luoghi delle riunioni per non esporre ai cani le cose sante e i fratelli, indicò soltanto il suo domicilio dove soleva abitare ed istruire i discepoli, presso il celebre titolo del Pastore, nel palazzo di Pudente. In fine il preside gli diede la scelta o di sacrificare o d'essere flagellato per tutto il corpo. L'invitto difensore della fede avendo dichiarato che egli aveva sempre bramato di soffrire tormenti per il Signore Gesù Cristo, dal quale si aspettava una grande ricompensa nel cielo, il preside pronunziò contro di lui la sentenza capitale. Così l'ammirabile filosofo non cessando di lodar Dio, dopo le battiture, avendo sparso il sangue per Cristo, fu incoronato di glorioso martirio. Alcuni fedeli raccolsero di nascosto il suo corpo, e lo seppellirono in luogo conveniente. II. sommo Pontefice Leone XIII ordinò che il suo Ufficio e Messa si celebrassero da tutta la Chiesa.

Non c'è niente di nascosto, che non si venga a scoprire, né di occulto, che non si venga a sapere Luc. 12,2. Il che vale quanto dire: Vi deve bastare per consolarvi, che io, Maestro e Signore, abbia sofferto le stesse ingiurie. Che se vi costa l'intenderlo, riflettete, d'altra parte, che voi non tarderete molto ad essere liberati da questi sospetti. E perché ve ne affliggete? perché vi trattano da seduttori ed impostori? Ma aspettate un po', e tutti vi acclameranno salvatori e benefattori del mondo. Il tempo farà luce su tutti questi punti oscuri, confonderà le loro calunnie, e mostrerà la vostra virtù nella sua luce. Allorquando la esperienza stessa avrà provato che voi siete i salvatori e i veri benefattori della umanità e avete messo in pratica tutte le virtù, gli uomini non crederanno più alle loro parole, ma alla verità delle cose: e mentre essi appariranno dei sicofanti, dei bugiardi, dei calunniatori, voi all'incontro risponderete più vivamente del sole. Così il tempo vi farà conoscere, proclamerà i vostri meriti e, con voce più forte d'una tromba, chiamerà tutti gli uomini a rendere testimonianza alla vostra virtù. Non vi lasciate dunque abbattere da quanto si dice ora, ma vi sorregga la speranza dei beni promessi. Poiché non è possibile che sia tenuto nascosto quanto vi riguarda.

Quindi, dopo averli liberati da ogni ansietà, timore e sollecitudine, e resi superiori a tutti gli oltraggi, approfitta di questa occasione per parlar della libertà della predicazione; perché dice: «Quel che vi dico all'oscuro, ditelo alla luce; e quello che avete udito all'orecchio, predicatelo sulle terrazze» Luc. 12,3. Certo non vi erano oscurità quando diceva queste cose, né parlava all'orecchio: ma egli si esprime così per iperbole. Siccome egli parlava a loro soli, e in un piccolo angolo della Palestina, perciò dice: «All'oscuro » e « All'orecchio»; paragonando questo modo di parlare colla arditezza di linguaggio onde poi li avrebbe istruiti. Non predicate soltanto a una, due o tre città, ma a tutto l'orbe, percorrendo il mare e la terra, abitata o non abitata; e dite tutto con gran fiducia a tiranni, popoli, filosofi, retori. Commemorazione: S. Tiburzio, Valeriano e Massimo, Martiri
Valeriano Romano, oriundo di nobile casato, sotto l'imperatore Alessandro Severo, per esortazione della beata Vergine Cecilia, nobile al pari di lui e che aveva sposata, fu battezzato, insieme col fratello Tiburzio, dal santo Papa Urbano. Almachio, prefetto di Roma, appena li seppe cristiani, e che, distribuito il patrimonio ai poveri, seppellivano i corpi dei Cristiani, chiamatili, li riprese aspramente: ma vedendoli confessare intrepidamente la divinità di Cristo, e affermare altamente gli dei non essere che vani simulacri dei demoni, ordina di batterli con, verghe. Ma non riuscendo a costringerli colle battiture a venerare la statua di Giove, anzi, persistendo essi ancora più nella loro fede, vengono decapitati a quattro miglia da Roma. Massimo, cameriere del prefetto, il quale li avea condotti al supplizio, stupito della loro virtù, si dichiarò cristiano insieme con molti altri servi del prefetto: i quali, poco dopo, battuti con verghe guernite di piombo, da servi del diavolo divennero tutti Martiri di Cristo.

Justin, the son of Priscus, was a Greek by race, but was born at Nablus in Palestine. He passed his youth in the study of letters. When he became a man he was so taken with the love of philosophy and the desire of truth that he became a student in the schools of all the philosophers and examined the teaching of them all. In them he found only deceitful wisdom and error. The light of heaven was given him, through an old man of worshipful aspect whom he knew not, and he embraced the philosophy of the true Christian faith. Henceforth he had the books of the Holy Scriptures in his hands by day and by night, and by meditating thereon the fire of God was so kindled in his soul that, himself possessing the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus our Lord, he wrote many books, with all the learning which he possessed, to set forth the Christian faith and to spread it abroad.

Amongthe most famous of the works of Justin are his two Apologies or Defences of the Christian faith. These he brought before the Senate when the Emperors Antoninus Pius, and his sons, as also Marcus Antoninus Verus and Lucius Aurelius Commodus, were savagely persecuting the followers of Christ, and by their means, and his vigorous disputations in favour of the same faith, he obtained a public edict from the government to stay the slaughter of the Christians. But Justin himself did not escape he had rebuked the life and infamous manners of the Cynic Crescens, and was accused and arrested through that person's plottings. He was brought before Rusticus, the President of Rome, who asked him what were the doctrines of the Christians, whereto he answered, in the presence of many witnesses, with this good confession: The right doctrine which we Christian men do keep with godliness is this, that we should believe that there is one God, Who is the Maker and Creator of all things, both those things which are seen and those things which bodily eyes do not see, and that we should confess the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, Who was foretold of old time by the prophets, and Who will come to be the Judge of all mankind.

In order to rebut the slanders of the heathen, Justin had in his first Apology given an open account of the gathering of the Christians for divine worship, and what were the holy Mysteries celebrated in these assemblies. The President therefore asked him what was the place where he and Christ's other faithful ones in the city were accustomed to meet. Justin, lest he should betray that which was holy unto God and his brethren, told only where was his own lodging, where he was used to abide and to teach his disciples, hard by the famous Church of the Shepherd, in the house of Pudens. The President then gave him the choice whether to sacrifice to the gods or to be hided with scourges over his whole body. The unconquered champion of the faith answered that he had always desired to suffer in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, from Whom he looked to receive a mighty reward in heaven. The President thereupon sentenced him to death, and then this excellent philosopher, giving praise to God, was first beaten and afterwards shed his blood for Christ's sake, and so received the crown of a glorious martyrdom. Some of the faithful secretly stole away his body, and buried it in a fitting place. The Supreme Pontiff Leo XIII. commanded that his Office and Mass should be used throughout the whole Church.

Commemoration of: Sts. Tiburtius, Valerian et Maximus, Martyrs
Valerian was a Roman, of a family as noble as that of the blessed maiden Cecily, to whom he was contracted in marriage, in the reign of the Emperor Alexander Severus. At her persuasion he and his brother Tiburtius were baptized by the holy Pope Urban. When it came to the knowledge of Almachius, the Prefect of the city, that they were become Christians, had given their substance to the poor, and were burying the bodies of the faithful, he sent for them and strongly rebuked them but as they constantly confessed that Christ is God, and that the gods of the heathen are but vain images of devils, he commanded them to be beaten with rods. But, forasmuch as no blows could force them to worship the image of Jupiter, but they seemed rather to wax strong in witnessing to the truth of the faith that was in them, they were beheaded at the fourth mile-stone from the city. One of the clerks of the Prefect, named Maximus, who had led them out to die, was so moved at the sight of their courage that he himself, with many other servants of the Prefect, owned to being a Christian they were sentenced to be scourged to death with whips loaded with lead, under the which torment, in a little while, all these, who had once been the devil's ministers, passed away as martyrs of Christ the Lord.

A Roma le sante Basilissa ed Anastasia, nobili donne, le quali essendo discepole degli Apostoli, e persistendo costanti nella confessione della fede, sotto l'Imperatore Nerone, dopo il taglio della lingua e dei piedi, percosse con la spada, si guadagnarono la corona del martirio.
Nello stesso giorno i santi Martiri Maróne, Eutiche e Vittorino, i quali, per la confessione di Cristo, furono esiliati colla beata Flavia Domitilla nell'isola di Ponza, donde vennero liberati sotto l'Imperatore Nerva; finalmente, avendo convertito moltissimi alla fede, nella persecuzione di Traiano, dal Giudice Valeriàno furono fatti morire con diversi tormenti.

Martyrology {anticipated}
April 15th 2026, the 27th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Rome, the noble ladies Basilissa and Anastasia, disciples of the Apostles. Forasmuch as they stood firm in the faith under the Emperor Nero, their tongues and feet were cut off, and they gained the crown of martyrdom by being slain with the sword.
Upon the same day, the holy martyrs Maro, Eutyches, and Victorinus. They were first exiled to the island of Ponza, along with the blessed Flavia Domitilla, for confessing Christ, but were afterwards liberated in the reign of the Emperor Nerva. They converted many to the faith, and were at length put to death with diverse torments by order of the Judge Valerian, in the persecution under the Emperor Trajan.
In Persia, under the Emperor Decius, the holy martyrs Maximus and Olympias. They were first hided with cudgels and scourges loaded with lead, and at length their heads were beaten with the cudgels until they gave up the ghost.
At Fiorentino, in Campania, the holy martyr Eutychius, [at the end of the first century, possibly with some companions.]
At Myra, in Lycia, holy Crescens, who achieved martyrdom by fire.
Likewise the holy martyrs Theodore, [a Priest,] and Pausilippus, who suffered under the Emperor Hadrian, [at Heracleia, on the Sea of Marmora.]

40:4 The Lord help him on his bed of sorrow: * thou hast turned all his couch in his sickness.
40:5 I said: O Lord, be thou merciful to me: * heal my soul, for I have sinned against thee.
40:6 My enemies have spoken evils against me: * when shall he die and his name perish?
40:7 And if he came in to see me, he spoke vain things: * his heart gathered together iniquity to itself.
40:7 He went out * and spoke to the same purpose.
40:8 All my enemies whispered together against me: * they devised evils to me.
40:9 They determined against me an unjust word: * shall he that sleepeth rise again no more?
40:10 For even the man of my peace, in whom I trusted, * who ate my bread, hath greatly supplanted me.
40:11 But thou, O Lord, have mercy on me, and raise me up again: * and I will requite them.
40:12 By this I know, that thou hast had a good will for me: * because my enemy shall not rejoice over me.
