Hi dies, dilectíssimi, qui inter resurrectiónem Dómini ascensionémque fluxérunt, non otióso transiére decúrsu, sed magna in eis confirmáta sacraménta, magna sunt reveláta mystéria. In iis metus diræ mortis aufértur, et non solum ánimæ, sed étiam carnis immortálitas declarátur. Sermone 1 sull'Ascensione del Signore, dopo il principio
Carissimi, i giorni che sono trascorsi fra la risurrezione e l'ascensione del Signore non sono passati inutilmente, ma in essi sono stati confermati dei grandi sacramenti, e rivelati dei grandi misteri. In essi ci è stato tolto il timore d'una morte funesta, e non solo l'immortalità dell'anima, ma anche la risurrezione della carne ci è stata manifestata. In essi, mediante il soffio del Signore, lo Spirito Santo s'è diffuso in tutti gli Apostoli: e il beato Apostolo Pietro, innalzato su tutti, s'è visto affidare, dopo le chiavi del regno, la cura della greggia del Signore.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Io sono la vera vite, e voi i tralci:

In questi giorni il Signore si aggiunge come terzo compagno ai due discepoli per istrada e, a dissipare tutte le tenebre dei nostri dubbi, rimprovera a loro timorosi e trepidanti la lentezza a credere. I loro cuori, allora rischiarati, cominciano a sentire la fiamma della fede: e di tiepidi ch'essi erano, divengono pieni d'ardore, mentre il Signore scopre loro il senso delle Scritture. Mentre sono a tavola, allo spezzare del pane, si aprono anche i loro occhi: quanto più felicemente si aprirono allora gli occhi di costoro per vedere nella sua persona la glorificazione della loro propria natura, che quelli dei nostri progenitori per sentire la confusione che avevano meritata colla propria disobbedienza.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Tuttavia nonostante questi fatti e altri miracoli, i discepoli rimanevano agitati da pensieri di timore, benché il Signore fosse apparso in mezzo a loro, ed avesse detto: «Pace a voi»: e perché non penetrasse nel loro spirito il dubbio che sorgeva nei loro cuori (perché credevano di vedere uno spirito, e non un corpo) egli mostra la falsità di questi pensieri sì poco conformi a verità: mette sotto gli occhi di essi che dubitavano ancora, i segni della sua crocifissione rimasti nelle sue mani e nei suoi piedi; e li invita ad osservarli attentamente e a toccarli. Le cicatrici delle ferite fatte dalla lancia e dai chiodi erano conservate per guarire le piaghe dei cuori infedeli: e perché si credesse non con fede vacillante, ma come oggetto d'una conoscenza certissima che questa stessa natura, che era stata deposta nel sepolcro, doveva assidersi col Figlio di Dio sul trono del Padre suo.

Omelia 14 sul Vangelo
Avete udito, fratelli carissimi, dalla lettura del Vangelo un insegnamento che vi riguarda . e avete appreso ancora a quale prova noi pastori siamo sottoposti. Ecco, colui che è buono non per una grazia accidentale, ma per essenza, dice: «Io sono il buon pastore». E nel darci il modello di questa stessa bontà da imitare, aggiunge: «Il buon pastore dà la sua vita per le sue pecorelle». Egli ha fatto ciò che ha insegnato: ci ha dato l'esempio di ciò che ha comandato. Il buon pastore ha dato la sua vita per le sue pecore, al fine di convertire (in nutrimento) nel nostro sacramento, il suo corpo e il suo sangue, e di saziare con l'alimento della sua carne le pecore che aveva redento.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Cristo risuscitato da morte, non muore più, la morte non avrà più dominio su lui: infatti se egli è morto per il peccato, è morto una volta soltanto:

E ci sono di quelli che amando più i beni della terra che le loro pecore, non meritano più il nome di pastore: e di questi subito si soggiunge: «Il mercenario invece, e chi non è pastore, e padrone delle sue pecore, se vede venire il lupo, abbandona le pecore e fugge». Non pastore, ma mercenario vien chiamato chi pasce le pecore del Signore non per motivo di amore sincero, ma per vantaggi temporali. È un mercenario colui che tiene il luogo di pastore, ma non cerca il bene delle anime: colui che appetisce con avidità le comodità della vita presente, che si compiace dell'onore che è unito alla sua carica, si nutre di guadagni temporali e si rallegra dei riguardi che gli usano gli uomini.

In them was abolished the terror of that fearful death, and it was shown that not the soul only, but the body also, will not die eternally. In them the breathing of the Lord on His Apostles shed upon them the Holy Ghost, and the Blessed Apostle Peter, being given the keys of the kingdom of heaven, was chosen out of the rest to receive the chief care of the Lord's fold.

And then He saith what is the character of His goodness, even of that goodness of His which we must strive to copy: The Good Shepherd giveth His life for the Sheep. As He had foretold, even so did He; as He had commanded, so gave He example. The Good Shepherd gave His life for the sheep, and made His Own Body and His Own Blood to be our Sacramental Food, pasturing upon His Own Flesh the sheep whom He had bought.

℟. Knowing that Christ rising again from the dead, dieth now no more, death shall no more have dominion over him. For in that he died to sin, he died once;

A Montepulciano, in Toscana, sant'Agnése Vergine, dell'Ordine di san Doménico, illustre per miracoli.

Martyrology {anticipated}
April 20th 2026, the 3rd day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Rome, the holy martyrs Sulpitius and Servilian. They were converted to the faith of Christ by the preaching and miracles of the blessed Virgin Domitilla, and were put to death by Anian, Prefect of the city, in the persecution under the Emperor Trajan, for refusing to offer sacrifice to idols.
Upon the same day, the holy martyrs Victor, Zoticus, Zeno, Acindinus, Caesareus, Severian, Chrysophor, Theonas, and Antonine, who were variously tried under the Emperor Diocletian, and attained to martyrdom, [most likely in Nicomedia.]
At Tomi, in Scythia, holy Theotimus, [Bishop of that see, about the year 409,] whose holiness and miracles were so striking that he was honoured even by the unbelieving savages.
At Embrun, in Gaul, holy Marcellinus, the first Bishop of that city, who came from Africa in consequence of a warning from God, along with his holy companions Vincent and Domninus, and by his word and the wondrous signs, for which he is famous even unto this day, brought to believe in Christ a great number of the dwellers on the Seaward Alps, [in the year 374.]
At Auxerre, [in the fifth century,] the holy Priest Marcian.
On the same day, the holy Confessor Theodore, nicknamed "Hairy" on account of the rough sackcloth garment which he wore. He is famous for many mighty works, more especially against evil spirits and from his body there floweth an ointment whereby the sick are healed. [He was of a noble family of Constantinople. His date is not known exactly, but it was certainly after the persecution of Diocletian. He lived in a desert in Thrace, which is called after him, the Hairy Desert]
