Anselmo, nato in Aosta, sui confini dell'Italia, dai nobili e cattolici genitori Gundulfo ed Ermemberga, fin dai teneri anni, coll'assiduo studio delle lettere e col desiderio di vita più perfetta, diede non oscuro presagio della futura santità e dottrina. E benché il bollore giovanile lo trascinasse per qualche tempo dietro alle seduzioni del mondo, richiamato ben tosto però sulla primiera via, abbandonato patria e tutti i suoi beni, si portò al monastero di Bec, dell'ordine di san Benedetto; dove, fatta la professione religiosa sotto l'osservantissimo abate Erluino e il dottissimo Lanfranco, col suo fervore di spirito e costante studio progredì talmente nell'acquisto delle lettere e delle virtù, da essere riguardato da tutti come mirabile modello di santità e dottrina.

La sua astinenza e sobrietà fu tanta, che l'assiduità al digiuno pareva avere distrutto in lui quasi ogni sensazione di bisogno di cibo. Dopo aver impiegata la giornata negli esercizi monastici, nell'insegnamento e nel rispondere alle diverse questioni di religione onde era richiesto, rubava la più gran parte della notte al sonno, per rinvigorire l'anima sua nelle divine meditazioni, che non faceva mai senza grande abbondanza di lacrime. Eletto priore del monastero, seppe conciliare così bene colla carità, umiltà e prudenza i fratelli che gli erano contrari, che da invidiosi li rese amici suoi e di Dio, con sommo vantaggio della regolare osservanza. Morto l'abate, e messo, benché riluttante, al suo posto, la fama della sua dottrina e santità risplendé talmente dovunque, che non soltanto era venerato da re e da vescovi, ma fu caro altresì a san Gregorio VII, il quale, provato allora da grandi persecuzioni, gli indirizzò lettere piene d'affezione, nelle quali raccomandava se stesso e la Chiesa cattolica alle sue preghiere.

Defunto Lanfranco, arcivescovo di Canterbury, suo antico maestro, per le sollecitazioni di Guglielmo, re d'Inghilterra, e per le istanze del clero e del popolo, Anselmo chiamato, benché riluttante, al governo di quella chiesa, ristabilì subito (col fine di riformare i corrotti costumi del popolo), l'antica pietà e disciplina ecclesiastica prima colla predicazione e coll'esempio, poi cogli scritti e colla celebrazione di concilii. Ma lo stesso re Guglielmo, avendo ben tosto tentato colla violenza e colle minacce di usurpare i diritti della Chiesa, egli gli si oppose con sacerdotale fermezza; soffrendo la perdita dei beni e l'esilio, si portò a Roma da Urbano II: dal quale fu ricevuto con onore e colmato di lodi, dopo aver sostenuto al concilio di Bari, contro l'errore dei Greci, con innumerevoli testimonianze della Scrittura e dei santi Padri, che lo Spirito Santo procede anche dal Figlio. Morto Guglielmo, il re Enrico, suo fratello, lo richiamò in Inghilterra dove s'addormentò nel Signore; celebre non solo per i miracoli e la santità (specialmente per un'insigne devozione alla passione di nostro Signore e della beata Vergine sua Madre), ma ancora per la sua dottrina utilissima alla difesa della religione cristiana, al profitto delle anime, e a tutti i teologi che han trattato delle scienze sacre secondo il metodo scolastico, egli sembra aver attinto dal cielo la ispirazione di tutte le sue opere.

Voi siete il sale della terra. Se il sale diventa insipido, non è buono a nulla quello che si salerà. Ma io credo che non ci sia il sale della terra. In che modo quindi chiamò gli apostoli il sale della terra? Ma va cercata la proprietà delle cose dette, che sarà mostrata sia dal compito degli apostoli, sia dalla natura dello stesso sale. Il sale è in se come una cosa sola e contiene l'elemento dell'acqua e quello del fuoco, e questo di due è una cosa sola.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Il Signore l'ha amato ed onorato: l'ha rivestito con un manto di gloria,
* e l'ha incoronato alle porte del paradiso, alleluia.

Ma gli apostoli sono i predicatori delle cose celesti, e come i seminatori dell'eternità, conferenti l'immortalità a tutti i corpi sui quali sia stato cosparso il loro annuncio. Meritatamente quindi sono chiamati sale della terra, perché conservano i corpi per l'eternità a maniera di una salatura per virtù della dottrina.

Reading 4
Anselm was born of noble and Catholic parents, named Gundulph and Hermenberga, at Aosta, in Piedmont, about the year of our Lord 1033. From his tenderest years his diligence in study, and his aspirations to a more perfect state of life, gave no indistinct foreshadowing of the holiness and learning to which he afterwards attained. The heat of youth drew him for a while into the snares of the world, but he soon returned to his first courses, and, forsaking his country and his goods, betook himself in 1060. to the monastery of Bee, under the rule of St. Benedict. There he made his profession as a monk, and under the rigid discipline of Herluin, the Abbot, and the learned instruction of the profound Lanfranc, with great zeal of spirit and eager obedience to the Rule, he made such progress in learning and godliness, that he shone before all others as an example of holiness of life, and power of doctrine.

Certification and purity were his marked characteristics, and by constant fasting all taste for food seemed to have died in him. He spent the day in the monastic work, in teaching, and in answering hard questions upon religion, and he took away from sleep during what remained to him of the night, that he might refresh his soul by thoughts of God, wherein he was alway comforted by an unceasing flow of tears. When he was chosen Prior of the monastery, he so won over, by his charity, lowliness, and wisdom, some brethren who looked ill upon him, that from enviers, as he had found them, he turned them into lovers of God and of himself likewise, with exceeding gain to the strictness of observance in that Abbey. After the death of the Abbot, in 1078, Anselm, though against his own will, was chosen to succeed him. In this high place the light of his learning and holiness so shone all round about, that he was reverenced not only by Kings and Bishops, but was taken up by the holy Pope Gregory VII., who, amid the great persecutions which were then trying him, wrote with words of great love to Anselm to recommend himself and the Catholic Church to his prayers.

After the death of Lanfranc, Archbishop of Canterbury, in 1089, Anselm, whose teacher Lanfranc had formerly been, was driven by William II., King of England, supported by the entreaties of the clergy and people, though sorely against his own wishes to take upon him the government of that Church. Raised to that See ~upon the 4th day of December, in the year 1093, he straightway set himself to reform the corrupt manners of the people, and, first by his word and example, and then by his writings and the Councils which he held, succeeded in restoring the ancient godliness and discipline of the Church. But when the aforesaid King William tried by force and threats to seize on the rights of the Church, Anselm withstood him as beseemed a Priest, and after that he had suffered the plundering of all his goods and been sent into banishment, he betook himself to Rome to Urban II. There he was received with great worship, and won high praise for that in the Council of Bari, in 1098, he maintained by countless proofs from Scripture and the holy Fathers, against the error of the Greeks, that the Holy Ghost proceedeth from the Son also. When William lived no more, his brother Henry I., King of England, in the year 1100, called back Anselm thither, and there he fell asleep in the Lord, upon the 21 st day of April,1109. His is a name illustrious not for miracles only, nor for holiness, and indeed he had a wondrous love for his Lord Who had suffered for him, and for the blessed Maiden Mother of the Same our Lord, but also for the deep learning which he used for the defence of the Christian Religion and the good of souls. That wonderful knowledge of theology which he had, and which is shown in all the books which he wrote, seemeth to have been given him from heaven for the teaching of all writers on the same subject, who have used what is called the Scholastic method.

Comment, on Matth. V
“Ye are the salt of the earth. But if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.” There is, I take it, no such thing as salt of the earth. How, then, can the Apostles be called the salt of the earth? But the true meaning of these words will be made plain, when we consider the duty of Apostles, and the nature of salt itself. Now, salt is a compound of the elements of water and fire, out of the which two things in salt there is made one.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Nello stesso giorno moltissimi santi Martiri, i quali, l'anno seguente alla morte di Simeone, essi pure nel giorno in cui si celebrava l'annua memoria della passione del Signore, in tutta la regione della Pèrsia, per il nome di Cristo, sotto il Re Sapore, furono fatti uccidere con la spada. In questa battaglia per la fede fu martirizzato Azade eunuco, carissimo al Re; Milles Vescovo, illustre per santità e per il dono dei miracoli; Acèpsima Vescovo, con Giacomo suo Prete, così pure Aitala e Giuséppe, Preti, Azadàne e Abdièso Diaconi, e molti altri Chierici; inoltre Marèa e Bicor Vescovi, con altri venti Vescovi e quasi duecentocinquanta Chierici, e con moltissimi Monaci e Vergini sacre. Fra queste ci fu altresì una sorella del Vescovo san Simeone, di nome Tàrbula, con una sua serva; le quali, legate ai pali e segate per mezzo, furono crudelissimamente uccise.
Così pure in Pèrsia i santi Parménio, Eliména e Crisótelo Preti, Luca e Muzio Diaconi. li loro martirio è descritto nella passione dei santi Abdon e Sennen.

Martyrology {anticipated}
April 22nd 2026, the 5th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

The Solemnity of St. Joseph, spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, confessor, and patron of the Universal church.
At Rome, upon the Appian Way, the holy martyr Soter, Pope [in the years 162-170.]
At Rome likewise, the holy martyr Caius, Pope [in the years 283-295,] who was crowned with martyrdom under the Emperor Diocletian.
At Smyrna, holy Apelles and Lucius, who were among the earliest disciples of Christ. [Apelles is said by the Greeks to have ruled the Church of Smyrna, and Lucius that of Laodicea. They are mentioned by St Paul in the Epistle to the Romans, ch. xvi.]
Upon the same day very many holy martyrs, who were slain with the sword for Christ's name's sake by order of King Sapor in diverse places throughout the whole kingdom of Persia, in the year following the death of Simeon, and like him upon the day upon which is made the memorial of the Passion of the Lord. In this contending for the faith [from the year 341 till 386,] there suffered the eunuch Azades, who was a favourite of the king; Milles, Bishop [of a town in Persia,] who was illustrious for his holiness and for the glory of his miracles; Acepsimas, Bishop [of Honite, in Syria,] along with James his Priest the Priests; Aithalas, [Deacon of Bathnukadra,] and Joseph, [Priest of Bethcatuba,] the Deacons Azadanes and Abd-Jesus, and very many others of the clergy; likewise also the Bishops Mareas and Bicor, along with twenty other bishops, and nearly two hundred and fifty of the clergy; likewise also very many monks, and hallowed virgins, among whom was Tarbula, the sister of holy Simeon, along with her waiting-woman, who were most cruelly slain by being bound to beams and cut through with a saw.
Also in Persia, [in the year 251,] the holy martyrs, the Priests Parmenius, Helimenas, and Chrysotelus, and the Deacons Luke and Mucius, whose triumph is recorded in the history of the sufferings of the holy martyrs Abdon and Sennen.
At Alexandria, the holy martyr Leonides, who suffered under the Emperor Severus.
At Lyons, [in the year 177,] holy martyr Epipodius, who was arrested along with his colleague Alexander, in the persecution under the Emperor Antoninus Verus, and after suffering most grievous torments was beheaded.
At Sens, [in the year 541,] the holy Confessor Leo, Bishop of that see.
At Anastasiopolis, [in Galatia, in the year 613,] holy Theodore, Bishop [of that see,] famous for miracles.
