Ómnium singulárium gratiárum alícui rationábili creatúræ communicatárum generális régula est, quod, quandocúmque divína grátia éligit áliquem ad áliquam grátiam sublímem statum, ómnia charísmata donet, quæ illi persónæ sic eléctæ et ejus offício necessária sunt atque illam copióse décorant. Quod máxime verificátum est in sancto Joseph, putatívo patre Dómini nostri Jesu Christi, et vero sponso Regínæ mundi et Dóminæ Angelórum; qui ab ætérno Patre eléctus est fidélis nutrítius atque custos principálium thesaurórum suórum, scílicet Fílii ejus et Sponsæ suæ: quod offícium fidelíssime prosecútus est. Sermone su S. Giuseppe
È regola generale di tutte le grazie singolari concesse a qualche creatura ragionevole, che, ogni volta che la bontà divina sceglie qualcuno per onorarlo d'una grazia singolare o elevarlo ad uno stato sublime, gli doni tutti i carismi, che alla persona così eletta e al suo ufficio sono necessari, e l'adorni largamente di questi doni. Il che s'è verificato soprattutto in san Giuseppe, padre putativo di nostro Signore Gesù Cristo, e vero sposo della Regina del mondo e della Sovrana degli Angeli; il quale fu scelto dall'eterno Padre a fedele nutrizio e custode dei suoi principali tesori, cioè del suo Figlio e della sua Sposa: ufficio ch'egli adempì fedelissimamente. Al quale perciò il Signore disse: « Servo buono e fedele, entra nel gaudio del tuo Signore» Matth. 25,21.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Se lo consideri rispetto a tutta la Chiesa di Cristo, non è egli forse l'uomo eletto e singolare, sotto del quale Cristo fu posto nel suo ingresso nel mondo e per mezzo del quale fu salvaguardato l'ordine e l'onore della sua nascita? Se pertanto tutta la Chiesa è debitrice alla Vergine Madre, perché per lei fu fatta degna di ricevere il Cristo; così dopo di lei deve a lui senza dubbio una riconoscenza e venerazione singolare. Egli è come la chiave dell'antico Testamento, in cui il merito dei patriarchi e dei profeti consegue il frutto promesso. Egli solo infatti possiede realmente quanto la bontà divina aveva a quelli promesso. Giustamente dunque egli è figurato nel patriarca Giuseppe, che conservò il frumento ai popoli. Però egli lo sorpassa, perché non solo ha fornito il pane della vita materiale agli Egiziani, ma, nutrendo (Gesù) con somma cura, ha procurato a tutti gli eletti il Pane del cielo, che dà la vita celeste.

Certamente non è a dubitare, che Cristo non abbia conservata in cielo, anzi non abbia compita e resa perfetta quella famigliarità, rispetto e sublimissima dignità, che, come un figlio a suo padre, gli accordò durante la vita terrestre. Onde non senza razione nella parola citata il Signore aggiunge: «Entra nel gaudio del tuo Signore» Matth. 25,21.. E benché il gaudio dell'eterna beatitudine entri nel cuore dell'uomo, tuttavia il Signore amò dirgli; «Entra nel gaudio»; per insinuare misticamente che questo gaudio non è solamente dentro di lui, ma che lo circonda d'ogni parte e lo assorbe e lo sommerge come un abisso senza fondo. Ricordati pertanto di noi, o beato Giuseppe, e coll'aiuto della tua preghiera intercedi presso il tuo Figlio putativo; e rendici altresì propizia la beatissima Vergine tua sposa, la Madre di colui che col Padre e collo Spirito Santo vive e regna per tutti i secoli dei secoli. Così sia.

Libro 2 sulla Concordanza dei Vangeli
È evidente che dicendo (l'Evangelista): «E lo si credeva figlio di Giuseppe» Luc. 3,23 l'ha detto per quelli che lo credevano nato da Giuseppe, come nascono gli altri uomini. Quanto poi a quelli che sono sorpresi che altri progenitori enumeri Matteo discendendo da David fino a Giuseppe, e altri Luca ascendendo da Giuseppe fino a David, è facile osservare che Giuseppe ha potuto avere due padri, uno che l'ha generato e un altro che l'ha adottato. Infatti era antica usanza, anche presso il popolo di Dio, che coloro che non avevano figli, ne adottassero per averne. Così s'intende Luca aver preso come padre di Giuseppe non colui che l'ha generato, ma che l'ha adottato, e sono i progenitori di quest'ultimo ch'egli enumera nel suo Vangelo risalendo fino a David.

Essendo infatti necessario ammettere che tutti due gli Evangelisti, Matteo cioè e Luca, dicono il vero, e che quindi l'uno descriva la genealogia del padre naturale di Giuseppe e l'altro del padre adottivo, chi crediamo aver più probabilmente tracciato la genealogia del padre adottivo, non colui forse che non ha voluto dire Giuseppe essere stato generato da quello ch'egli gli dà per padre? Matteo invece dicendo : «Abramo generò Isacco, Isacco generò Giacobbe» Matth. 1,2 e così continuando a impiegare questo verbo : «Generò», finché dice infine: «Giacobbe poi generò Giuseppe» Matth. 1,16 mostra abbastanza chiaramente aver egli seguito la linea degli avi diretti di Giuseppe, e nominato non il padre che l'avea adottato, ma generato.

Commemorazione: SS. Soteris et Caji Paparum et Martyrum
Sotero, nato a Fondi, nella Campania, decretò che le sacre vergini non toccassero né i vasi sacri né le palle, e che non venissero incensate in chiesa. Egli stabilì ancora che nella Cena del Signore tutti i fedeli ricevessero il corpo di Cristo, eccetto quelli che ne fossero esclusi per un fallo grave. Ricevé la corona del martirio sotto l'imperatore Marco Aurelio, e fu sepolto nel cimitero detto poi di Callisto. Caio, Dalmata, della famiglia dell'imperatore Diocleziano, ordinò che nella Chiesa si ascendesse all'episcopato per i seguenti gradi di ordini e onori: di Ostiario, Lettore, Esorcista, Accolito, Suddiacono, Diacono, Prete.Egli fuggendo la crudeltà di Diocleziano verso i Cristiani, si nascose per qualche tempo in una spelonca; ma otto anni dopo conseguita la corona del martirio insieme con suo fratello Gabino, fu sepolto parimenti nel cimitero di Callisto.

When any special favours are conferred upon a reasonable being, it is the common rule that whenever the grace of God electeth such and such an one for such and such a grace, or for such and such an high post of duty, the person so elected receiveth all the gifts of grace which be needful for him in that state of life whereunto he is called, and receiveth them abundantly. Of this there is an excellent instance in the case of the holy Joseph, the socalled father of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the real husband of her, who is Queen of the world, and Lady of Angels. He had been elected by the Eternal Father to be the faithful nurse and warder of His two chief treasures, that is, His Son, and Joseph's own Wife. This duty Joseph faithfully discharged, and consequently the Lord hath said to him: Well done, thou good and faithful servant enter thou into the joy of thy Lord. Matth. xxv. 21.

Reading 5
This man Joseph, if we compare him with the Universal Church of Christ, is he not that elect and chosen one, through whom, and under whom, Christ is orderly and honestly brought into the world? If, then, the Holy Universal Church be under a debt to the Virgin Mother, because it is through her that she hath been made to receive Christ, next to Mary she oweth love and worship to Joseph. Joseph is the key of the (Church of the Saints) which were under the Old Testament, in whose person the noble structure of Patriarchs and Prophets reacheth her completion and realiseth her promises. He is the only one of them who actually enjoyed in full fruition what God had been pleased to promise before to them. It is, therefore, with good reason that we see a type of him in that Patriarch Joseph who stored up corn for the people. But the second Joseph hath a more excellent dignity than the first, seeing that the first only gave to the Egyptians bread for the body, but the second was the watchful guardian for all the elect of that Living Bread Which came down from heaven, of Which whosoever eateth will never die.

There can be no doubt that Christ still treateth Joseph in heaven with that familiarity, honour, and most high condescension which He paid him, like a Son to a father, while He walked among men; nay, rather, that He hath now crowned and completed those habits. We may very reasonably suspect that it was with a peculiar meaning that Christ said (to him) Enter thou into the joy of thy Lord. The joy of being blessed for ever entereth into the heart of man, but when the Lord said (to Joseph), Enter thou into joy, He probably meant mystically to bid him realise a joy which should not be within him only, but outside him also, above him, and below him, and all round about him, and overflowing him as it were a great bottomless pit of joy to swallow him up altogether. Therefore, O thou blessed Joseph! remember us! In thy helpful prayers, make intercession for us with Him Who vouchsafed to be supposed thy Son! Likewise, obtain some pity for us from that most blessed Maiden who was thy wife, and the Mother of Him, Who, with the Father and the Holy Ghost, liveth and reigneth, God, world without end. Amen.

Book ii., on the Harmony of the Evangelists.
And Jesus Himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the Son of Joseph. These words, as was supposed, were evidently here written for the correction of such as might think that the Lord was the Son of Joseph, in the same sense as other men are called the children of their fathers. Those who find any trouble in the fact that the ancestors reckoned downward by Matthew from David to Joseph, are other than those reckoned upward by Luke from Joseph to David, such, I say, as are troubled by this, may get over it by supposing that Joseph had two fathers; one, that is, who begat him, and another who adopted him. The custom of adopting children, whereby those who have none of their own surround themselves with a family, is very ancient, even among the people of God. Hence, Luke is understood to have included in his Gospel, under the name of father of Joseph, that, not of the father by whom he was begotten, but of him by whom he was adopted, and it is the ancestors of this adoptive father who are reckoned up as far as David.

Commemoration of: Sts. Soter and Caius, Popes and Martyrs
Soter, a countryman of Fondi in Campania, succeeded the holy martyr Anicetus. It was he who ordained that nuns should not touch the sacred vessels and linen of the Altar, nor serve with the incense in the Church. He ordained likewise, that on the anniversary of the Lord's Supper, every one should receive the Body of Christ, except those who were forbidden to do so on account of grievous sin. He was crowned with martyrdom under the Emperor Marcus Aurélius, and was buried in the Cemetery, which was afterwards called that of St. Calixtus. Caius was a Dalmatian and a kinsman of the Emperor Diocletian. It was he who ordained that the following should be the order of degrees in the Church through which all should pass before they be made bishop: first, Porter; second, Lector; third, Exorcist; fourth, Acolyte; fifth, Subdeacon; sixth, Deacon; seventh, Priest. Caius fled from the cruelties practiced by Diocletian against the Christians, and lay hid for a while in a cave, but after eight years he and his brother Gabinus won the crown of martyrdom, and was likewise buried in the Cemetery of Callistus.

Il natale di san Giorgio Martire, il cui illustre martirio si venera dalla Chiesa di Dio tra le corone dei Martiri.
Nel villaggio di Tenkitten, presso il golfo di Dànzica, in Prussia, si ricorda pure il natale di sant'Adalbérto, Vescovo di Praga e Martire, che predicò il Vangelo ai Polacchi e agli Ungheresi.
A Valènza, nella Frància, la passione dei santi Martiri Felice Prete, Fortunato ed Achilleo Diaconi. Questi, essendo stati mandati dal beato Irenèo, Vescovo di Lione, a predicare la parola di Dio, e avendo convertito alla fede di Cristo la maggior parte di quella città, furono gettati in prigione dal comandante Cornélio; quindi, lunghissimamente flagellati, spezzate loro le gambe, legati intorno a ruote, tormentati col fumo mentre erano appesi sull'eculeo, finalmente furono uccisi colla spada.
