Avete tollerato la tortura più dura fino al massimo della gloria: non avete ceduto ai supplizi, ma piuttosto i supplizi hanno ceduto a voi. Le corone diedero ai dolori quella fine, che i tormenti non davano. A ciò la tortura continuò a lungo più severa, ma non da far cadere la fede stabile, ma da mandare più in fretta gli uomini di Dio a Dio.

La moltitudine dei presenti vedette ed ammirò la battaglia celeste, la battaglia di Dio, battaglia spirituale, conflitto di Cristo: che i suoi servi stavano in piedi a voce libera, colla mente incorrotta,per potenza divina, nudi difatti contro i proiettili del mondo, ma armati con le armi della fede fervorosa. Stettero torturati più forti dei torturatori: le membra battute e dilaniate vinsero i battitori e gli uncini dilanianti. La piaga ulcerante a lungo ripetuta non poté superare la fede inespugnabile, benché, rotta la struttura delle viscere, venivano torturata nei servi di Dio non più le membra, ma le ferite! Il sangue fluiva, per estinguere l'incendio della persecuzione, per sopire le fiamme ed i fuochi della geenna con glorioso coagulo.

Tratto 80, su Giovanni
Questo tratto del Vangelo, o fratelli, in cui il Signore afferma essere egli la vite e i suoi discepoli i tralci, si deve intendere nel senso che egli, Gesù Cristo, uomo, mediatore tra Dio e gli uomini, è il capo della Chiesa e noi le sue membra. Ora la vite e i tralci sono della stessa natura. Perciò egli, essendo Dio, della cui natura noi non siamo, si fece uomo affinché la natura umana fosse in lui come una vite, di cui anche noi uomini potessimo essere i tralci.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Io sono la vera vite, voi i tralci:
* se uno rimane in me ed io in lui, questi porta molto frutto, alleluia, alleluia.

Che cosa significa dunque: «Io sono la vera vite»? Forse, aggiungendo «vera», si è riferito per opposizione a quella vite da cui è stata presa questa similitudine? Infatti, egli si dice vite per similitudine, non in senso proprio, come si dice pecora, agnello, leone, roccia, pietra angolare e simili; questi sono più veri di quella, perché da essi sono dedotte le similitudini, non le proprietà. Ma quando dice: «Io sono la vera vite», certamente vuole distinguersi da quella cui fu detto: «Come ti sei trasformata in amarezza, vite straniera?». Infatti, in che modo può essere vite vera quella da cui si è aspettato che producesse uva ed invece ha prodotto delle spine?
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. I suoi nazirei sono divenuti più candidi della neve, alleluia, e a Dio hanno dato splendore.

«Io sono, dice, la vera vite, e il Padre mio è l'agricoltore». Sono forse una stessa cosa la vite e l'agricoltore? Cristo è la vite se si ha riguardo alla sua natura che gli permette di dire: «Il Padre è più grande di me». Se invece si pensa alla natura che gli fa dire: «Io e il Padre siamo una cosa sola» egli è anche agricoltore; e non lo è come lo sono quelli che eseguono il loro. lavoro operando dall'esterno; ma lo è in modo tale da dare anche un incremento interiore. Infatti « né chi pianta, né chi innaffia, è qualche cosa, ma chi dà un incremento, cioè Dio ». Ma Cristo è certamente Dio, perché il Verbo era Dio; per cui egli e il Padre sono una cosa sola. E se il Verbo si è fatto uomo, che prima non era, rimane però quello che era.

They that stood by looked in wonder at your heavenly conflict, that battle of God, that wrestling of spirit, that combat of Christ. There they that were tormented stood braver than they that tormented them. Their bruised and mangled bodies overcame the instruments of cruelty that bruised and mangled them. The bloody stripes, so often laid on, could not beat down the impregnable castle of their faith, even when the covering of their bowels was broken, and that which was tormented in God's servants was no longer limbs but wounds. The blood that ran down, ran down to quench the rage of persecution, noble blood, that can put out the flames and fire of hell.

Why saith He: I am the true vine? As touching this word true, hath He not here regard to that other parable of a vine, the like figure whereto He doth here apply to Himself? Jer. ii. 21. Here is He called a vine, not plainly, but in parable, as also He is called elsewhere a sheep, Isa. liii. 7, Acts viii. 32, a lamb, John i. 36, a lion, Apoc. v. 5, a rock, 1 Cor. x. 4, a corner-stone, ~Eph. ii. 20, and other things of the like kind. But these things are in themselves that which they seem to be, albeit He is called by their names, not plainly, but in a parable, and herein are they different from that vine, whereof in this place He taketh on Him the name. For when He saith: I am the true vine, doth He not make distinction between Himself, and that which indeed seemed to be a vine, but to which it is said: How art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine unto Me? Jer. ii. 21. For by what title shall that plant be called other than a false vine, whereto they looked that she should bring forth grapes, and she brought forth thorns?

Martirologio {anticipated}
Anno del Signore 2026, 24 Aprile, Luna 7

A Sèvis, nella Svizzera, san Fedéle da Sigmaringa, Sacerdote dell'Ordine dei Minori Cappuccini e Martire, il quale, mandato là a predicare la fede cattolica, nello stesso luogo, ucciso dagli eretici, compì il martirio, e dal Papa Benedétto decimoquarto fu annoverato fra i santi Martiri.
A Roma san Saba, condottiero di soldati, il quale, accusato di visitare i Cristiani detenuti in carcere, liberamente confessò Cristo dinanzi al Giudice. Per questo dallo stesso Giudice fu bruciato con fiaccole e gettato in una caldaia di pece bollente, ed essendone uscito illeso, convertì a Cristo con tal miracolo settanta uomini, i quali tutti, perseverando costantemente nella confessione della fede, furono uccisi con la spada. Alla fine anche lui, gettato nel fiume, compì il martirio.
A Lióne, in Frància, il natale di sant'Alessandro Martire, il quale, nella persecuzione di Antonino Vero, dopo la prigionia, fu prima talmente lacerato dalla crudeltà dei carnefici, che, sciolta la tessitura delle coste, ed aperte le viscere, rimasero scoperte le interiora del corpo; quindi, confitto sul patibolo della croce, sfinito esalò il beato spirito. Insieme con lui furono martirizzati anche altri, in numero di trentaquattro, la cui memoria si celebra in altri giorni.
A Nicomédia i santi Martiri Eusébio, Neóne, Leonzio, Longino ed altri quattro, i quali, nella persecuzione di Diocleziano, dopo atroci tormenti, furono uccisi con la spada.
In Inghiltérra la deposizione di san Mellito Vescovo, il quale, mandato là dal Papa san Gregorio, convertì alla fede i Sàssoni orientali e il loro Re.

Martyrology {anticipated}
April 24th 2026, the 7th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Sevis, in Switzerland, the holy martyr Faithful of Sigmaringen, of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchins. He had been sent thither to preach the Catholic faith, but was murdered by the heretics, and so attained martyrdom, [in the year 1622,] and was numbered among the holy martyrs by the Supreme Pontiff Benedict XIV.
At Rome, the holy martyr Saba, a commander of troops. He was accused of visiting the Christians in prison, and freely confessed Christ in the presence of the judge. He was scorched with torches, and thrust into a vessel of boiling pitch, whence he came forth unhurt, by the which marvel seventy men were turned to Christ, who all stood fast to their confession, and were slain with the sword, when after Saba himself was drowned in the river, and so gained the crown of his testimony, [in the year 272.]
At Lyons, in Gaul, the holy martyr Alexander. In the persecution under the Emperor Antoninus Verus he was imprisoned, and afterwards lashed to such an extent that his inner parts could be seen through holes between his ribs then he was nailed to a cross, and gave up his blessed spirit. There suffered along with him thirty-and-four others, of whom mention is made upon other days.
Upon the same day, the holy martyrs Eusebius, [said to have been converted by St George,] Neon, Leontius, Longinus, and four others, who were slain with the sword after grievous torments in the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian.
In England, [in the year 624,] the holy Bishop Mellitus, who was sent into this country by holy Gregory, and converted to the faith the East Saxons and their King. [He was the first Bishop of London, and afterwards of Canterbury.]
At Elvira, in Spain, the holy Confessor Gregory, Bishop [of that see, about the end of the fourth century.]
At Brescia, holy Honorius, Bishop of that see, [in the year 586.]
In Scotland, the holy Priest and monk Egbert. A man of marvellous lowliness and self-denial, [in the year 729,] whose feast we keep upon the 27th day of this present month of April.
