Sermone 147 sul Tempo
In questi santi giorni consacrati alla risurrezione del Signore, trattiamo, per quanto lo possiamo coll'aiuto della sua grazia, della risurrezione della carne. Ecco infatti la nostra credenza: la risurrezione è un benefizio di cui vediamo la promessa e l'esempio nella carne del Signor nostro Gesù Cristo. Poiché egli volle non solo preannunziare, ma anche dimostrare, nella sua persona, il compimento di ciò che ci ha promesso per la fine dei secoli. Quelli che allora erano con lui, l'hanno contemplato, e siccome erano presi da stupore e credevano di vedere uno spirito, si assicurarono, toccandolo, ch'era vero corpo materiale. Egli parlò non soltanto alle loro orecchie, intrattenendosi con loro, ma mostrandosi ancora ai loro occhi: e sarebbe stato poco per lui farsi vedere, se non avesse anche permesso che lo si toccasse e palpasse.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Per l'uomo carnale unica regola d'intendere è la testimonianza dei suoi occhi. Egli crede ciò ch'è solito vedere: e non crede a ciò che non vede. Dio fa dei miracoli al di fuori del corso ordinario delle cose, perché è Dio. E maggior miracolo però far nascere ogni giorno sì gran numero di uomini che non esistevano, che il risuscitarne alcuni che già esistevano: e tuttavia questi fatti meravigliosi non sono oggetto della nostra attenzione, e l'abitudine di vederli li ha deprezzati. Cristo è risuscitato: è un fatto incontestabile. Egli aveva un corpo, era carne: fu appeso alla croce, rese lo spirito, il suo corpo fu posto nel sepolcro. Colui che viveva in questa carne l'ha mostrata piena di vita. Perché ne siamo stupiti? perché non crediamo? Colui che ha fatto questo (prodigio) è un Dio.

Questo «fra un poco» è tutto lo spazio che rapido percorre il secolo presente. Onde lo stesso Evangelista dice nella sua Lettera: «È l'ultima ora». (Il Signore) aggiunge: «Perché me ne vo al Padre» Joann. 2,18: il che è da riferire alla prima proposizione che dice: «Fra un poco non mi vedrete più»: e non alla seconda dove dice: «E fra un altro poco, mi vedrete». Andando al Padre egli doveva infatti sottrarsi ai loro sguardi. E perciò queste parole non significano che egli dovesse morire, e che fino alla sua risurrezione sarebbe rimasto nascosto ai loro occhi: ma che doveva andare al Padre, ciò che fece allorquando, dopo essere risuscitato e aver conversato con loro per quaranta giorni, ascese al cielo.

Ma quello che aggiunse: «E fra un altro poco mi vedrete» (Ibi), lo promise a tutta la Chiesa, come a tutta (la Chiesa) ha pure promesso: «Ecco che io sono con voi sino alla consumazione dei secoli» Matth. 28,20. Il Signore non ritarda il compimento della sua promessa. Fra un poco, lo vedremo, ma in uno stato che non avremo più nulla a domandargli, non avremo più a interrogarlo su nulla, perché nulla ci resterà a desiderare, nulla di occulto da apprendere.

Sermo 147 de Tempore
During these Holy Days in commemoration of the Lord's resurrection, we purpose to preach, so far as he will empower us, the doctrine of the resurrection of the body. For this is the Faith, to wit: the gift of resurrection, which was bestowed upon the flesh of our Lord Jesus Christ, is what is promised to us, for it was first made manifest in him that we might know what to hope for ourselves. What he hath thus promised would come to us at the last, he willed not only to foretell but to demonstrate. Those who were present at that time (even though they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed they had seen a spirit), handled him, and saw that a spirit would not have flesh and bones, such as they saw him to have. Thus he spake to them, not only in words which they could hear, but in a body which they could see; as if it had not been enough to shew himself to their sight, but must needs even offer himself to be touched and handled.

To carnal men, the one rule of understanding is his ordinary experience; seeing is believing. By His going to the Father He was about to bring it to pass that they should see Him no more. And thus it was that He said, not that He was about to die, and that after His death they should not see Him until He rose again, but that He was going to the Father, which He did when, after that He was risen again and had manifested Himself to them for forty days, He ascended up into heaven.

This little while seemeth a very long while to us now, while as it is still going on, but when it is over we shall feel indeed how truly it is but a little while. Therefore, may our rejoicing never be like the rejoicing of that world whereof it is said: The world shall rejoice. A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, and yet, while hitherto our gladness is still coming to the birth through throes of sorrow, let us not be altogether sorrowful, but, as the Apostle hath it Rom. xii. 12: Rejoicing in hope: patient in tribulation. A woman, when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world. And so will it be with us. And with that let me end my discourse. The next passage is one of extreme difficulty; nor is it possible to treat it briefly, if, (with the will of God,) it is to be treated satisfactorily.

San Piétro Canisio, Sacerdote della Compagnia di Gesù, Confessore e Dottore della Chiesa, che passò al Signore il ventuno Dicembre.
A Nicomédia il natale di sant'Antimo, Vescovo e Martire, il quale, nella persecuzione di Diocleziàno, per la confessione di Cristo, acquistò la gloria del martirio con la decapitazione. Lo seguì pure quasi tutta la moltitudine dei suoi fedeli, dei quali il Giudice alcuni fece decapitare, altri abbruciare, ed altri, posti sopra barchette, sommergere nel mare.

Martyrology {anticipated}
April 27th 2026, the 10th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

We keep the feast of the holy Priest and monk Egbert, a man of marvellous lowliness and self-denial, of whom mention has been made upon the 24th day of this present month of April.
At Nicomedia, the holy martyr Anthimus, Bishop of that see, who was beheaded for confessing Christ, in the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian, and so gained the glory of martyrdom. He was followed by almost all his flock, whereof by command of the judge some were slain with the sword, some burnt in fire, and some embarked upon ships and drowned in the sea.
At Tarsus, in Cilicia, the holy martyrs Castor and Stephen. [St. Stephen was perhaps a Bishop.]
At Rome, blessed Pope Anastasius [I, in the year 401,] a man very rich in poverty and apostolic care, of whom St. Jerome writeth that Rome deserved not long to have him, lest the head of the world should be cut off under such a Bishop, since no long while after his death Rome was taken and sacked by the Goths.
At Bologna, [in the sixth century,] the holy Confessor Tertullian, Bishop of that see.
At Brescia, [in the fifth century,] holy Theophilus, Bishop of that see.
