Libro 1 sulle Nozze e le Concupiscenze c. 11
Non per ingannarlo l'Angelo disse a Giuseppe: «Non esitare a prendere Maria in tua consorte» Matth. 1,29. Ella è chiamata consorte dal momento in cui diede la fede di sposa, lei ch'egli aveva lasciata e doveva lasciare sempre nella sua integrità verginale ; né l'appellativo di consorte era divenuto vuoto di senso o mendace in questa unione, in cui né c'era stato né ci doveva essere mai nulla di carnale. Ella infatti era Vergine; e perciò ancor più santamente e mirabilmente diletta a suo marito, sapendola egli divenuta feconda all'infuori delle regole della natura, e quindi disuguale per la prole, uguale per la fedeltà. A motivo di questa fedele unione, tutti due meritarono di essere chiamati «genitori di Cristo» Luc. 2,43, e non solo lei meritò il titolo di madre, ma anche lui quello di padre, siccome sposo della madre di lui, e questi due titoli furono meritati secondo l'affetto non secondo la carne. Egli è padre solo per l'affetto, ella è madre anche secondo la natura ; tuttavia sono tutti due genitori di lui, nella sua umiltà, non nella sua grandezza ; della sua debolezza, non della sua divinità.

Perché dunque stava sottomesso ad essi, che erano assai al disotto della natura di Dio, se non perché «annientò se stesso prendendo la natura di servo», della qual sua natura di servo erano essi genitori? Ma certamente non sarebbero stati tutti due neppure i genitori della sua stessa natura di servo, se non si fossero uniti fra loro come sposi, benché non avessero affatto rapporti coniugali. Ecco anche perché, nel citare gli antenati di Cristo, nell'ordine in cui si sono succeduti, bisognava, di preferenza, far terminare, com'è stato fatto, la genealogia a Giuseppe, per non sembrare di fare, in questa unione, ingiuria al sesso maschile, ch'è certo il più nobile, e d'altra parte non ne soffre per nulla la verità, poiché e Giuseppe era come Maria della stirpe di David, da cui era stato predetto venire il Messia. Così dunque nei genitori di Cristo c'è tutto quanto di buono offre il matrimonio : prole, fedeltà, sacramento. La prole sappiamo essere lo stesso Gesù Signore; la fedeltà, perché non ci fu nessun adulterio; il sacramento, perché non ci fu divorzio.

Sermone 36 sul tempo del Battesimo di Cristo
Questo giorno del battesimo del Salvatore è in certo modo (per noi) un secondo natale. Perché la sua figliazione ci si manifesta cogli stessi segni e miracoli onde fu circondata la sua nascita, ed è ancora per effetto d'un più grande mistero ch'egli è ora battezzato. Difatti Dio disse: «Questo è il Figlio mio diletto in cui mi sono compiaciuto». Questa seconda natività è certamente più splendida della prima. Perché la prima diede Cristo al mondo silenziosamente e senza testimonio; la seconda ha battezzato il Signore colla proclamazione della sua divinità. In quella Giuseppe, che passava per il padre, riconobbe di non esserlo affatto; in questa, colui che non si credeva essere il Padre, si fa conoscere tale. Là, un dubbio pesa sulla Madre, perché il padre non s'era servito di tutti i diritti di sposo ; qua la Madre è onorata, perché Dio rende testimonianza al suo Figlio.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Giuseppe, figlio di David, non esitare a prendere Maria in tua consorte, perché quel ch'è nato da lei è per opera dello Spirito Santo: ma darà alla luce un figlio,

La seconda natività è, dico, più onorata della prima. Poiché qui il Dio della maestà si dichiara suo padre, mentre là un artigiano, Giuseppe, n'è creduto il padre. E sebbene in tutti due questi avvenimenti, la nascita e il battesimo del Signore siano opera dello Spirito Santo, tuttavia il Padre che parla dal cielo è incomparabilmente più grande di colui che lavora sulla terra. Come padre del Signore Salvatore era dunque riguardato Giuseppe, che sulla terra faceva opera d'artigiano, e quest'opera Dio, ch'è il vero Padre di nostro Signore Gesù Cristo, non lascia di compierla, essendo anch'egli artigiano.

Nella religione le sue virtù rifulsero di grande splendore; conservò il corpo e l'anima in una tale purezza, che non si sentì mai inquinato da alcuna macchia di peccato mortale ed eccelse in mirabile zelo di penitenza e contemplazione. Si occupava assiduamente nel procurare la salvezza delle anime; l'ardore della fede lo infiammava talmente, che bramava di subire la morte per essa, e domandava costantemente a Dio questa grazia, che anche ottenne. Perché esercitando egli la carica d'Inquisitore, mentre da Como ritornava a Milano, un empio sicario lo ferì alla testa con due colpi di spada; e benché mezzo morto, prima di rendere lo spirito recitò il simbolo della fede che fin da bambino aveva già confessato con virile coraggio; se ne andò a ricevere la palma del martirio nell'anno della salute 1252. Illustrato da molti miracoli, Innocenzo IV l'iscrisse l'anno seguente nel novero dei santi Martiri.

The Angel did not speak falsely when he said to Joseph: Fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife. She is called wife because of the mutual confidence established between them at the time of her espousal, although he had not known her carnally, nor was he ever so to do. And the name of wife was not lost or rendered untrue because there had not been any carnal intercourse, and would not be in the future. She was, in fact, The Virgin; and therefore she was holier and a more wonderful source of joy to her husband just because she became a mother without a man's intervention. Thus he knew her to be like unto himself in faithfulness, unlike him as regards her offspring. On account of his faithful union, both of them merited the name of Christ's parents. And not only is she called his Mother, but he also is called his father, as being the husband of his Mother, not according to the flesh, but according to the spirit. But even though he was a father only in spirit, whilst she was Mother according to the flesh, yet they both were the parents of his humility, not of his glory; of his infirmity, not of his divinity.

Why therefore was he subject to them who were so far below the form of God, except that he humbled himself, taking upon himself the form of a servant, of which form they were the parents? But truly, neither of them would have attained unto the parenthood of this form of a servant, except they had become respectively husband and wife, albeit without any carnal intercourse. And hence, when the ancestors of Christ are recounted in direct line of succession, the genealogy was fittingly traced down to Joseph. Otherwise, it would have been a slur upon the male sex, which is wont to be accorded the greater dignity. At the same time the truth did not suffer, for both Joseph and Mary were of the seed of David, from which it was prophesied that Christ should come. Note how thus all the good things of marriage are found in these parents of Christ: offspring, fidelity, the marriage bond. The offspring we know, was the Lord Jesus himself; their fidelity is proved because there was no adultery; the marriage bond, because there was no divorce.

The day of his baptism is, as it were, a second birthday of the Saviour. For we know that he was born with signs and wonders like to those of his baptism, and that in the latter is a great mystery like to his birth. For God saith: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. This second birth is indeed more glorious than the first. For then, he was born in silence, and without witnesses. Now, the Lord is baptized with a proclamation of his divinity. Then, Joseph, who was supposed to be his father, denied that he was. Now, his true Father, who was not believed to be so, proclaimeth himself so to be. Then, the Mother was enduring suspicion, because no father was acknowledged. Now she that bore him is honoured because the Divinity maketh him known as his Son.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. Joseph, thou Son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife; for That Which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost and she shall bring forth a Son;

I say that the second birth was more glorious than the first. For now, the God of majesty proclaimeth himself as his father. Then, the carpenter Joseph was so accounted. And although it was the Holy Ghost through whom the Lord was born and baptized, yet the Father, whose voice was heard from heaven, is greater than the father who laboured on earth. Therefore Joseph the workman on earth was supposed to be the father of the Lord and Saviour. But God, the true Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, is also a workman, and cannot be excluded from those who work at the carpenter's trade.

A Saintes, in Frància, il beato Eutropio, Vescovo e Martire, il quale, consacrato Vescovo dal Papa san Clemènte, fu da lui mandato in Frància, ed ivi, dopo aver lungamente predicato, finalmente morì vincitore, essendogli stato spaccato il capo, per la testimonianza di Cristo.
A Cordova, nella Spagna, i santi Martiri Amatóre Prete, Piétro Monaco e Lodovico.
A Novàra san Lorénzo Prete, ed alcuni fanciulli Martiri, che gli erano stati affidati perchè li educasse.

Il primo, dopo aver già prima superato nella confessione di Cristo le tribolazioni della persecuzione di Décio, fu di nuovo preso col suo illustrissimo collega; ed ambedue, dopo crudeli ed acerbi supplizi, meravigliosamente confortati due volte da divine rivelazioni, alla fine, insieme a molti altri, furono uccisi colla spada.

April 30th 2026, the 13th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Rome, [in the year 1380,] the holy Virgin Catherine of Siena, of the order of St Dominic, famous for her life and miracles, whose name Pius II enrolled among those of the holy virgins, and whose feast we keep upon the 5th day of May.
At Lambesa, in Numidia, the holy martyrs the Reader Marian, and the Deacon James. Marian had already triumphed over persecution by confessing Christ, under the Emperor Decius, but was arrested again along with his illustrious companion. After dire torments both were wondrously strengthened by revelations from God, and were at last beheaded, along with many others, [in the year 260.]
