Allorché per mezzo del segno sacratissimo della croce la santa madre Chiesa vi ha ricevuti nel suo seno per generarvi spiritualmente, colla gioia più grande, come i vostri fratelli, voi siete divenuti la futura generazione di tanta madre, e finché non vi rigeneri nel bagno salutare del battesimo e vi restituisca alla luce vera, ella nutrisca con alimenti convenienti quelli che porta nel seno e, lieta, li conduca lieti al giorno in che li dia spiritualmente alla luce: poiché ella non è sottoposta alla condanna di Eva, che, nella tristezza e nei gemiti, dà alla luce dei figli, che sono punto nella gioia, ma piuttosto nel pianto. Ella infatti scioglie ciò che la prima donna aveva legato: affinché colla sua obbedienza renda alla vita coloro che la disobbedienza della prima donna ha donato alla morte. Tutte le cerimonie misteriose, che sono state fatte e si fanno ancora su voi mediante il ministero dei servi di Dio - esorcismi, preghiere, cantici spirituali, insufflazioni, cilizio, inchini di testa, prostrazioni, questo timore stesso che bisogna desiderare con ogni sicurezza - tutte queste cose sono, come dissi, gli alimenti onde questa madre vi nutrisce nel suo seno, affinché, rigenerati nel battesimo, vi presenti lieti a Cristo.

Avete ricevuto anche il simbolo, come protezione di colei che vi deve generare, contro il veleno del serpente. Nell'Apocalisse dell'Apostolo Giovanni si stava davanti alla donna ch'era per divenir madre, affin di divorarne la prole appena fosse nata. Nessuno di voi ignora questo dragone essere il diavolo: e questa donna rappresentare la Vergine Maria, che, vergine, diede alla luce il nostro capo vergine; e che, di più, nella sua persona, era figura della santa Chiesa: perché come generando suo figlio ella restò vergine, così la Chiesa genera in ogni tempo i membri di lui senza perdere la sua verginità. Coll'aiuto del Signore abbiamo intrapreso ad esporvi gli articoli stessi dell'augustissimo simbolo, per imprimere nei vostri cuori quello che ciascuno d'essi contiene. I vostri cuori sono preparati, perché il nemico è stato scacciato dai vostri cuori.

Omelia di sant'Agostino Vescovo
Trattato 74 su Giovanni, verso la fine, e 75
Dicendo: «Io pregherò il Padre, ed egli vi darà un altro Paraclito» Joann. 14, 16, mostra ch'egli pure è Paraclito. Paraclito si traduce in Latino per avvocato: e di Cristo è detto: «Abbiamo un avvocato presso il Padre, Gesù Cristo, il giusto» Joann. 2, 1. Egli poi dichiarò che il mondo non può ricevere lo Spirito Santo, nello stesso senso che fu detto: «La prudenza della carne è nemica di Dio: perché non è soggetta alla legge divina, né può esserlo» Rom. 8, 7: come se dicessimo: L'ingiustizia non può essere la giustizia. Con questa parola «mondo» egli designa qui quelli che amano il mondo: amore che non viene certo dal Padre. Si vede dunque lo Spirito S. in maniera invisibile. E s'egli non è in noi, non possiamo averne conoscenza: è così che noi vediamo in noi stessi la nostra coscienza. Noi vediamo bene la faccia d'un altro, e non possiamo vedere la nostra: vediamo invece la nostra coscienza, e non vediamo l'altrui. Ma la coscienza non può mai esistere che in noi: mentre lo Spirito Santo può essere anche senza di noi. Esso ci viene dato perché sia pure in noi: ma, s'egli non è in noi, ci è impossibile di vederlo e conoscerlo, come dev'essere veduto e conosciuto. Dopo aver promesso lo Spirito Santo, il Signore non volendo che si potesse credere ch'egli lo dava per sostituire se stesso, e che egli cesserebbe così d'essere co' suoi discepoli, aggiunse: «Non vi lascerò orfani, tornerò a voi» Joann. 14, 18. Non contento dunque il Figlio di Dio di averci fatti figli adottivi di suo Padre e d'aver voluto che noi abbiamo per Padre, per un effetto della grazia, quello ch'è suo Padre per natura, mostra ancora egli stesso verso di noi una tenerezza in certo modo paterna quando dice: «Non vi lascerò orfani» (Ibi).

We have also received the Creed, which is the shield of the travailing Mother against the venom of the dragon. By these words of the Lord: “I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter”, He doth imply that Himself is a Comforter. The Greek word used, namely “Parakletos,” signifieth also an Advocate, and is used in that sense where it is written “We have an Advocate Parakleton with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous.” “Even the Spirit of truth, Whom the world cannot receive,” because as we read elsewhere, “the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can it be” as we may say plainly nothing can make unrighteousness righteous. By “the world,” in this place, we must understand the lovers of the world, a love which cometh not of the Father. And therefore it is that this love of the world, which we strive to lessen and to destroy in ourselves, is contrary to “the love of God, which is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
