Trattato 26 su Giovanni, dopo il principio
Non t'immaginare d'essere attirato nolente: l'anima è attirata anche dall'amore. E non dobbiamo temere d'essere ripresi forse, intorno a questa parola evangelica delle sacre Scritture, da uomini che pesano eccessivamente le parole e son lontani dal comprendere le cose, soprattutto quelle di Dio, e che ci si dica: Come credo volontariamente, se sono attirato? Ma io rispondo: È poco dire dalla volontà: tu sei attirato anche dal piacere. Che significa essere attirato dal piacere? «Metti le tue delizie nel Signore, ed egli ti darà quanto il tuo cuore domanda» Ps. 36, 4. C'è un certo piacere per il cuore, cui è dolce questo pane celeste. Ora se un poeta poté dire: «Ognuno è attirato dal proprio piacere» Virg. Egl. 2: non dalla necessità, ma dal piacere, non dal dovere, ma dal diletto: con quanta più ragione noi dobbiamo dire d'essere attirato a Cristo chi pone le sue delizie nella verità, nella beatitudine, nella giustizia, nella vita eterna, ché Cristo è tutto questo? O forse che i sensi del corpo hanno i loro piaceri, e l'anima ne sarà priva? Se l'anima non ha i suoi piaceri, come mai è detto: «Ma i figli degli uomini spereranno all'ombra delle tue ali: saranno inebriati dall'ubertà della tua casa, e li disseterai al torrente delle tue delizie. Perché presso di te è la sorgente della vita, e nel lume tuo vedremo la luce» Ps. 35, 8?
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Il Signore insegnò loro la disciplina e la sapienza, alleluia: rafforzò in essi la grazia del suo Spirito,

Dammi uno che ama, e comprenderà ciò che dico: dammi uno che brama, che ha fame, che si riguarda come esule in questo deserto, che ha sete del cielo e sospira alla sorgente dell'eterna patria: dammi uomo siffatto, e comprenderà quel che dico. Se invece parlo a uno ch'è freddo, non capisce punto ciò che dico. Tali erano i Giudei che mormoravano fra loro. «Chi attira il Padre, dice il Signore, viene a me». Ma che significa: «Chi attira il Padre» Joann. 6, 44, mentre è lo stesso Cristo che attira? Perché ha voluto dire: «Chi attira il Padre»? Se dobbiamo essere attirati, siamolo da colui al quale un'anima amante dice: «Noi corriamo dietro all'odore dei tuoi profumi» Cant. 1, 3. Consideriamo attentamente, fratelli, quel che ha voluto dirci, e comprendiamolo per quanto ne è dato. Il Padre attira al Figlio quelli che credono nel Figlio, perché sono persuasi ch'egli ha Dio per Padre. Dio Padre, infatti, ha generato un Figlio eguale a sé; e chi pensa che colui al quale crede è uguale al Padre, e sente nella sua fede e medita questa verità, il Padre l'attira al Figlio.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Andate per tutto il mondo e predicate il Vangelo, alleluia:

Ario lo credé creatura, non lo attirò già il Padre; perché non considera il Padre, chi non crede il Figlio a lui uguale. Che dici, o Ario? che dici, o eretico? che linguaggio tieni tu? Che cosa è Cristo? Egli non è già il Dio vero, dici tu, ma esso è stato fatto dal vero Dio. Non ti attirò il Padre; perché non hai compreso il Padre, di cui neghi il. Figlio. Ciò che pensi di lui, non è il Figlio: tu non sei attirato dal Padre, né sei attirato al Figlio. Perché altro è il Figlio, altro quello che tu dici. Fotino dice: Cristo non è che un uomo, egli non è anche Dio. Chi la pensa così, non lo attirò il Padre. Chi attirò il Padre? Colui che dice: «Tu sei il Cristo, il Figlio di Dio vivo» Matth. 16, 16. Tu mostri a una pecora un ramo verde, e l'attiri. Si mostrano delle noci a un fanciullo, e si attira: e siccome egli corre, è attirato perché l'ama, è attirato senza alcuna violenza esteriore, è attirato dal legame del cuore. Se dunque queste cose, che le delizie e i piaceri terreni rivelano agli amanti, esercitano su di essi una vera potenza di attrazione, essendo vero che: «Ciascuno è attirato dal proprio piacere» Virg. Egl. 2, non attirerà Cristo rivelatoci dal Padre? Invero che desidera l'anima più ardentemente, che la verità?

26th Tract on John
Think not that thou art drawn against thy will; the soul is drawn, not willingly only, but lovingly. Neither must we be afraid lest men who are great weighers of words, and very far from understanding the things of God, should catch us up upon this Gospel doctrine of the Holy Scriptures, and should say to us: How can my faith be willing if am drawn? I answer: Thou art not drawn as touching thy will, but by pleasure. And, now, what is being drawn by pleasure? Delight thyself in the Lord, and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Ps. xxxvi. 4. There is pleasure in that heart to which the Bread That came down from heaven is sweet. The poet is allowed to say His special pleasure draweth each, but pleasure, which so draweth, is not a necessity, not a bond, but a delight how much more strongly, may we say that men are drawn to Christ, who delight in truth, who delight in blessedness, who delight in righteousness, who delight in life everlasting, since truth and blessedness, and righteousness and everlasting life are all to be found in Christ? Or have the bodily senses pleasure, and the spiritual senses none? If the spiritual sense have no pleasures, wherefore is it written: And the children of men shall put their trust under the shadow of thy wings. They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house, and Thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures. For with thee is the fountain of life, and in thy light shall we see light. Ps. xxxv. 8.

Martyrology {anticipated}
On the morrow we keep the feast of the blessed Pope Gregory VII, a right stout champion and defender of the freedom of the Church, of whom mention is made upon, the 25th day of this present month of May.

In Sardinia, the holy martyrs Emilius, Felix, Priam, and Lucian, who contended for Christ, and were crowned.
