Gl'immensi benefizi della generosità divina concessi al popolo cristiano, gli conferiscono una dignità inestimabile. Giacché non c'è né ci fu mai «nazione tanto grande da avere gli dèi così a sé vicini, com'è vicino a noi il nostro Dio» Deut. 4,7 Infatti l'unigenito Figlio di Dio, volendo farci partecipi della sua divinità, assunse la nostra natura per fare, fattosi egli uomo, gli uomini dii. E di più, quanto egli prese di nostro, tutto lo diede per la nostra salvezza. Infatti egli offrì a Dio Padre per la nostra riconciliazione il suo corpo vittima sull'altare della croce, e sparse il suo sangue in prezzo insieme e lavacro; affinché, riscattati da miseranda schiavitù, fossimo mondati da tutti i nostri peccati. E perché di tanto benefizio rimanesse in noi continua memoria, lasciò ai suoi fedeli il suo corpo in cibo e il suo sangue in bevanda da prendersi sotto le specie del pane e del vino.

O prezioso e ammirabile convito, salutare e pieno di ogni soavità! Infatti che ci può essere di più prezioso di questo convito? nel quale non le carni dei vitelli e dei capretti, come una volta sotto la legge, ma ci si offre a mangiare Cristo, vero Dio. Che più mirabile di questo sacramento? Poiché in esso il pane e il vino si mutano sostanzialmente nel corpo e nel sangue di Cristo; e così che Cristo, Dio e uomo perfetto, si contiene sotto l'apparenza di un po' di pane e di un po' di vino. Egli dunque viene mangiato dai fedeli, ma per nulla lacerato; che anzi, spezzate le specie sacramentali, persevera intero sotto qualsivoglia divisa particella. Gli accidenti poi sussistono in esso senza il loro soggetto, affinché la fede abbia ad esercitarsi allorché si riceve invisibilmente questo corpo, visibile in sé, ma nascosto sotto una specie estranea; e affinché i sensi siano preservati da errore giudicando essi dagli accidenti apparenti.

Nessun sacramento poi è più salutare di questo, mercé del quale si cancellano i peccati, si accrescono le virtù, e l'anima s'impingua abbondantemente di tutti i carismi spirituali. Si offre nella Chiesa per i vivi e per i morti, affinché giovi a tutti esso che fu istituito per la salvezza di tutti. Nessuno infine può esprimere la soavità di questo Sacramento, per cui la dolcezza spirituale si gusta nella sua sorgente medesima, e si celebra la memoria di quell'eccesso di carità che Cristo ci mostrò nella sua passione. Così, affinché la immensità di questa carità s'imprimesse ognor più profondamente nei cuori dei fedeli, egli, nell'ultima cena, quando celebrata la Pasqua coi suoi discepoli stava per passare da questo mondo al Padre, istituì questo Sacramento come memoriale perenne della sua passione, compimento delle antiche figure, il massimo dei miracoli da lui operati; lasciandolo come singolare sollievo ai discepoli contristati della sua assenza.

Gli uomini col cibo e colla bevanda si propongono di non aver più né fame né sete; ma ciò non l'otterranno davvero se non con questo cibo e bevanda, che rendono immortali e incorruttibili quelli che li ricevono; e questa è la società stessa dei Santi ove è pace e unione piena e perfetta. Per questo, come l'hanno inteso gli uomini di Dio che ci hanno preceduto, nostro Signore Gesù Cristo lasciandoci il suo corpo e il suo sangue scelse delle materie la cui unità è composta di molte parti. Di esse materie l'una è fatta un sol pane con molti grani di frumento; l'altra, un solo vino con succo spremuto da molti acini di uva. Egli espose infine come avvenga ciò di cui parla; e che cosa sia mangiare il: suo corpo e bere il suo sangue.

Per questo chi non dimora in Cristo, e quello in cui non dimora Cristo, senza dubbio non mangia la sua carne, né beve il suo sangue spiritualmente, sebbene secondo la carne e visibilmente prema coi denti il Sacramento del corpo e del sangue di Cristo; ma al contrario mangia e beve sì gran sacramento a propria condanna, perché, immondo com'è ardisce di accostarsi ai Sacramenti di Cristo, che niuno può degnamente ricevere se non è puro, essendo scritto; «Beati i mondi di cuore, perché essi vedranno Dio» Matth. 5,5.

The immeasurable benefits, which the goodness of God hath bestowed on Christian people, have conferred on them also a dignity beyond all price. “For what nation is there so great, who hath gods so nigh unto them, as the Lord, our God, is unto us?” Deut. iv. 7. The Only-begotten Son of God, being pleased to make us “partakers of the Divine nature,” 2 Pet. i. 4, took our nature upon Him, being Himself made Man that He might make men gods. And all, as much of ours as He took, He applied to our salvation. On the Altar of the Cross He offered up His Body to God the Father as a sacrifice for our reconciliation He shed His Blood as the price whereby He redeemeth us from wretchedness and bondage, and the washing whereby He cleanseth us from all sin. And for a noble and abiding memorial of that so great work of His goodness, He hath left unto His faithful ones the Same His very Body for Meat, and the Same His very Blood for Drink, to be fed upon under the appearance of bread and wine.

Than this Sacrament can anything be more health-giving? Thereby are sins purged away, strength renewed, and the soul fed upon the fatness of spiritual gifts. Than this Sacrament can anything be more furnished with dainties The glorious sweetness thereof is of a truth such that no man can fully tell it. Therein ghostly comfort is sucked from its very well-head. Therein a memorial is made of that exceeding great love which Christ showed in time of His sufferings. It was in order that the boundless goodness of that His great love might be driven home into the hearts of His faithful ones, that when He had celebrated the Passover with His disciples, and the last Supper was ended, “the Lord Jesus, knowing that His hour was come that He should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved His own which were in the world, He loved them unto the end,” John xiii. 1, and instituted this Sacrament, this Sacrament, the everlasting “forth-showing of His death until He come again,” 1 Cor. xi. 26, this Sacrament, the embodied fulfilment of all the ancient types and figures, this Sacrament, the greatest miracle which He ever wrought, and the one mighty joy of them that now have sorrow, till He shall come again, and their heart shall rejoice, and their joy no man take from them. John xvi. 22.

By use of meat and drink men would fain that “they shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more,” Apoc. vii. 16, and yet there is but one Meat and one Drink, Which doth work in them that feed thereon that “this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal put on immortality,” 1 Cor. xv. 53, namely communion with that general assembly and Church of God's holy children, who are “kept in perfect peace,” Isa. xxvi. 3, and are “all one,” John xvii. 11, fully and utterly. And therefore it is, as men of God before our time have taken it, that our Lord Jesus Christ hath set before us His Body and His Blood in the likeness of things which, from being many, are reduced into one. In one loaf are many grains of corn, and one cup of wine the juice of many grapes. And now He giveth us to know how that which He spake cometh to pass, and how indeed “this Man can give us His Flesh to eat,” and His Blood to drink.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

“He that eateth My Flesh, and drinketh My Blood, dwelleth in Me, and I in him.” To dwell in Christ, therefore, and to have Him dwelling in us, is to “eat of that Bread and drink of that Cup,” 1 Cor. xi. 28, and he which dwelleth not in Christ, and in whom Christ dwelleth not, without all doubt doth not spiritually eat His Flesh nor drink His Blood, although he do carnally and visibly press the Sacrament with his teeth but, contrariwise, he “eateth and drinketh damnation to himself,” because he dareth to draw nigh filthy to that secret and holy thing of Christ, whereunto none draweth nigh worthily, save he which is pure, even he which is of them concerning whom it is said: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” Matth. v. 8.

I have My life from the Father, as One That is greater than I. John xiv. 28. He that eateth Me, even he, by thereby taking part in Me, shall live by Me. It is as having humbled Myself Phil. ii. 8 that I live by the Father, but he that eateth Me, him will I raise up, John vi. 55, and so he shall live by Me. It is said “I live by the Father” that is to say, He is of the Father, not the Father of Him, and yet not so, but that the Father and the Son are co-equal together. Also it is said “So he that eateth Me, even he shall live by Me,” whereby He showeth the gracious work towards His people of Him Who is the “one Mediator between God and man,” 1 Tim. ii. 5, and not that He Which is eaten and he which eateth Him are co-equal together.

Martirologio {anticipated}
Anno del Signore 2026, 5 Giugno, Luna 19

Nella Frisia san Bonifacio, Vescovo di Magónza e Martire. Questi, dall'Inghiltérra andato a Roma, dal Papa beato Gregorio secondo fu mandato in Germania per predicare la fede di Cristo a quelle genti, e, avendo ivi sottomesso alla religione Cristiana una grandissima moltitudine, specialmente dei Frisoni, meritò di essere chiamato Apostolo dei Germàni; alla fine nella Frisia dai pagani infuriati colpito con la spada, compì il martirio insieme ad Eóbano Coepiscopo e ad alcuni altri servi di Dio.
A Tiro, nella Fenicia, san Dorotéo Prete, il quale soffrì molti tormenti sotto Diocleziàno; e, sopravvivendo fino ai tempi di Giuliàno, sotto di lui, all'età di centosette anni, onorò col martirio la sua veneranda vecchiaia.
In Egitto il natale dei santi Martiri Marciano, Nicànore, Apollonio ed altri, che compirono un illustre martirio nella persecuzione di Galério Massimiàno.
A Perugia i santi Martiri Fiorénzo, Giuliano, Ciriaco, Marcellino e Faustino, decapitati nella persecuzione dell'Imperatore Décio.
A Cordova, in Spagna, il beato Sàncio giovanetto, il quale, quantunque cresciuto nella corte reale, nondimeno, nella persecuzione Aràbica, non dubitò di subire il martirio per la fede di Cristo.
A Cesarèa, in Palestina, la passione delle sante Zenàide, Ciria, Valérla e Màrcia, le quali, dopo molti tormenti, giunsero giubilanti al martirio.

Martyrology {anticipated}
June 5th 2026, the 19th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

Holy Boniface, Archbishop of Mainz. He came from England to Rome, and was sent by Gregory II into Germany to preach the faith of Christ to those nations, and he earned the title of Apostle of the Germans by turning a vast multitude, more especially of Frisians, to the religion of Christ. At last he, along with Eoban and some other servants of God in Friesland, received martyrdom by the sword at the hand of raging heathens.
In Egypt, the holy martyrs Martian, Nicanor, Apollonius, and others, who finished an illustrious testimony, in the persecution under Galerius Maximian.
At Perugia, the holy martyrs Florence, Julian, Cyriacus, Marcellinus, and Faustinus, who were beheaded in the persecution under Decius.
