Conviene pertanto alla devozione dei fedeli di celebrare solennemente l'istituzione di così salutare e mirabile Sacramento, per venerare il modo ineffabile della presenza divina sotto un Sacramento visibile, per lodare la potenza di Dio, che opera tante meraviglie nel medesimo Sacramento, e per rendere a Dio, per un benefizio così utile e soave, le dovute azioni di grazie. Ma sebbene il giorno della Cena, in cui, come si sa questo Sacramento fu istituito, si faccia, nella Messa, una speciale menzione della sua istituzione; pure tutto il resto dell'ufficio di quel giorno si riferisce alla passione di Cristo, che la Chiesa allora è occupata a venerare.

Abbiamo sentito dal Vangelo le parole del Signore che fanno seguito a quelle del nostro ultimo discorso. I vostri spiriti, più ancora che le vostre orecchie, ne attendono la spiegazione, che quest'oggi non può non riuscirvi gradita: perché si tratta del corpo del Signore ch'egli prometteva di dare a mangiare per la vita eterna. Ora. affin di stabilire fin dove andrebbe questa comunicazione, questo dono di sé, in qual maniera darebbe la sua carne a mangiare, egli disse: «Chi mangia la mia carne e beve il mio sangue dimora in me ed io in lui» Joan. 6,57. Il segno che (il fedele) ha mangiato e bevuto è questo: se (Cristo) dimora in lui, e lui (in Cristo); se (Cristo) abita in lui, e lui (in Cristo); s'egli aderisce (a Cristo) talmente da non esserne separato.

Ecco dunque l'insegnamento e la lezione che egli ci dà con queste misteriose parole, cioè che dobbiamo far parte del suo corpo, essere delle sue membra sottomesse a lui come a nostro capo, e mangiare la sua carne, senza separarsi mai dalla sua unità. Ma molti dei presenti, non compresero punto e si scandalizzarono; perché, udendo queste cose, non concepivano che cose carnali, essendo carne essi stessi. Ora l'Apostolo dice, ed è la verità: «Giudicare secondo la carne, è la morte» Rom. 8.6. Il Signore ci dà a mangiare la sua carne: e giudicare secondo la carne, è la morte. Se i discepoli trovarono duro questo linguaggio, che dire dei suoi nemici? Eppure bisognava esprimersi qui in modo da non esser compreso da tutti. Il segreto di Dio deve farci attenti, non ostili: ma la fede di quei discepoli venne subito meno al sentire tali cose dal Signore Gesù Cristo. Non credettero che annunziasse qualche cosa di grande, e che quelle parole coprissero una grazia novella: ma le intesero come vollero e affatto umanamente, (pensarono cioè) che Gesù era capace o che Gesù disegnava di distribuire, come in pezzi, a coloro che credevano in lui, la carne onde il Verbo era rivestito. «E duro, dicono, questo linguaggio: e chi lo può intendere?».

It serveth well therefore to the edifying of the faithful to make memorial of the institution of this so health-giving and so wonderful a Sacrament, that we may worship the unspeakable way by the which the Divine Presence in-dwelleth in this Sacrament, Which we see, and may praise the power of God whereby in this Sacrament are wrought so many wonders, yea, and also give God some of those thanks which we owe unto Him for this so health-giving gift of His loving-kindness. It is true that on the Day of the Supper of the Lord, on which day we know it to have been that He ordained this Sacrament, at the solemn celebration of the Mass, the memory of the instituting thereof is more particularly mentioned, but all the rest of the Services on that day deal chiefly with Christ Suffering, to worshipping of Whom the Church doth at that season give all her mind.

℟. As they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blest it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said:

27th Tract on John.
We have heard from the Gospel the words of the Lord which follow [those that formed the subject of my earlier discourse. To your ears and understandings we owe a discourse on these also, and to-day it becometh very well, for it is upon that Body of the Lord, Which He professeth Himself that He “will give for the life of the world,” “that a man may eat thereof and not die.” He hath made manifest how He giveth, and What is His Gift, where He saith: “He that eateth My Flesh and drinketh My Blood, dwelleth in Me and I in him.” The sign to show whether a man hath or hath not eaten that Flesh and drunk that Blood, is whether or not he dwelleth in Christ and Christ in him, whether or not he is a guest of Christ and Christ of his, whether or not he so cleaveth unto Christ, that Christ be not parted from him.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. He that eateth My Flesh and drinketh My Blood,
* Dwelleth in Me, and I in him.
℣. What nation is there so great, who hath gods so nigh unto them, as the Lord our God is to us

The Apostle saith, (and very true it is) “To be carnally minded is death.” Rom. viii. 6. The Lord giveth us His Flesh to eat, and to understand it carnally is death. Where He saith: “Whoso eateth My Flesh is life” we. must not eat His Flesh carnally, whom it is written “Many of His disciples” (not His enemies) “when they heard this, said This is an hard saying who can hear it?”

If His disciples took His words for an hard saying, how did His enemies take them? And, nevertheless, thus it behoved to speak them if all men were not to understand them. A Divine mystery ought to make us thoughtful, not to repel us and yet, when the Lord Jesus Christ spoke thus in mystery, many of His disciples went back and walked no more with Him. They believed not that He was speaking of some great thing, and darkly announcing in these hath eternal understand this as did they of “Many of His words a bounty. They understood but as they pleased, even after the manner of men, that Jesus was able, or that Jesus meant, to give that Flesh wherewith the Word is clothed on, as it were, in slices, to them that believe on Him. And they said “This is an hard saying who can hear it?”

A Magdebùrgo san Norbérto, Vescovo di quella città e Confessore, Fondatore dell'Ordine Premostraténse.
A Cesarèa, in Palestina, il natale del beato Filippo, uno dei primi sette Diaconi. Questi, celebre per prodigi e miracoli, convertì la Samaria alla fede di Cristo, e battezzò l'eunuco di Candàce, Regina d'Etiòpia, e finalmente si riposò presso Cesarèa. Accanto a lui furono sepolte tre delle sue figlie. Profetesse e Vergini, mentre la quarta, ripiena di Spirito Santo, morì in Efeso.
A Roma sant'Artèmio, con la sua moglie Càndida e la figlia Paolina. Di essi Artèmio, convertitosi a Cristo per la predicazione ed i miracoli di san Piètro Esorcista, e battezzato con tutta la famiglia da san Marcellino Prete, per ordine del Giudice Seréno fu battuto con flagelli piombati e ucciso colla spada; la moglie e la figlia, gettate in una caverna, furono sotterrate con sassi e calcinacci.

Martyrology {anticipated}
June 6th 2026, the 20th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

Holy Norbert, Archbishop of Magdeburg, founder of the Order of the Premonstratensian Canons Regular.
At Caesarea, in Palestine, the blessed Philip, who was one of the first seven Deacons. He was illustrious for signs and wonders. He turned Samaria to believe in Christ, and baptized the eunuch of Candace, Queen of the Ethiopians. He fell asleep at last at Caesarea. Three of his virgin daughters, who were prophetesses, lie buried beside him. His fourth daughter died at Ephesus, full of the Holy Ghost.
At Rome, the holy martyrs Artemius, with Candida his wife and Paulina his daughter. This Artemius was brought to believe in Christ by the preaching and miracles of the holy Exorcist Peter, and was baptized with all his house by the holy Priest Marcellinus. He was first hided with scourges loaded with lead by order of Serenus the Judge, and afterwards beheaded. His wife and daughters were thrown into a vault, and buried in stones and rubbish.
At Tarsus, in Cilicia, twenty holy martyrs, who in the time of Diocletian and Maximian, under Simplicius the Judge, by diverse torments glorified God in their bodies.
At Noyon, in Gaul, [in the year 290,] the holy martyrs Amantius, Alexander, and their companions.
At Fiesole, in Tuscany, [in the year 839,] the holy martyr Alexander, Bishop [of that see, drowned in a torrent by his enemies.]
At Milan, deceased, [in the year 518,] the holy Confessor Eustorgius, second of that name, Bishop [of that see.]
