6 Perché indurate i vostri cuori, come l'Egitto e faraone indurirono il cuor loro? Non è forse vero che, dopo che l'ebbe flagellato, allora li lasciò partire ed essi se n'andarono?
7 Adesso pertanto, mettetevi a fare un carro nuovo, attaccate al carro due vacche che allattino e non abbiano mai tirato giogo, e chiudete nella stalla i loro vitellini.
8 Prenderete quindi l'arca del Signore, e la collocherete sul carro, e vi metterete accanto, in un confino, gli oggetti d'oro che gli avete offerti per il peccato, e poi lasciatela andare.
9 E starete a osservare: se salirà per la via dei suoi confini, verso Betsames, è lui che ci ha fatto male sì grande; se no, sapremo che non ci ha percossi la sua mano, ma è stato un caso.

Dalla Lettera di san Cipriano Vescovo e Martire a Cecilio
Libro 2, Lettera 3, a principio
Nel sacerdote Melchisedech vediamo prefigurato il mistero del sacrificio del Signore, secondo che ci attesta la Scrittura divina, dicendo: «Melchisedech, re di Salem, offrì del pane e del vino. Perché era sacerdote del sommo Dio, e benedisse Abramo» Gen. 14,11. Che poi Melchisedech prefigurasse Cristo, lo dichiara nei Salmi lo Spirito Santo, allorché, parlando a nome del Padre, dice al Figlio: «Ti ho generato prima dell'aurora: tu sei sacerdote in eterno secondo l'ordine di Melchisedech» Ps. 109,3. L'ordine in questione è certo quello che proviene e discende dall'antico sacrificio, in cui Melchisedech, agendo come sacerdote del sommo Dio, offrì del pane e del vino, e benedisse Abramo.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Mentre essi cenavano, Gesù prese del pane, lo benedisse, lo spezzò e lo diede ai suoi discepoli, dicendo;

Infatti chi è più sacerdote del sommo Dio, che nostro Signore Gesù Cristo? il quale offrì un sacrificio a Dio Padre; e offrì quello stesso che aveva offerto Melchisedech, cioè del pane e del vino, vale a dire il suo corpo e il suo sangue. E quanto alla benedizione data ad Abramo a titolo di primizia, essa si estendeva fino al popolo cristiano. Poiché se Abramo credé a Dio, e gli valse la giustificazione, indubbiamente chiunque crede a Dio e vive di fede, è perciò trovato giusto e già fin da prima benedetto e giustificato nel fedele Abramo, come lo prova l'Apostolo san Paolo con dire: «Abramo credé a Dio, e gli valse la giustificazione» .Gal. 3,6.
Vedete dunque che coloro che vivono di fede son figli di Abramo. Così, nella previsione che Dio giustificherebbe le genti mediante la fede, la Scrittura predice ad Abramo «che in lui sarebbero benedette tutte le genti» Gen. 12,3.

Ora dunque, perché questa benedizione del Genesi in Abramo fosse degnamente celebrata dal sacerdote Melchisedech, ci fu fin d'allora un sacrificio figurativo, consistente in offerte di pane e di vino. Ed è per perfezionare e compiere questa offerta, che il Signore ha offerto del pane e un calice di vino; e così, lui ch'è la pienezza, ha pienamente realizzato la figura. Lo Spirito Santo ha ancora tracciato anticipatamente per Salomone la pittura del sacrificio di nostro Signore, facendo menzione insieme e d'un'immolazione di vittime dell'altare, e degli Apostoli, dicendo: «La Sapienza s'è costruita una casa sostenuta da sette colonne: ha immolato le sue vittime, mescolato il suo vino nel calice, e preparata la sua mensa ». Ed ha inviato i suoi servi ad invitare a bere a questa coppa, gridando ad alta voce: «Chi manca di saggezza venga da me. E a coloro che sono privi d'intelligenza ha detto: Venite, mangiate dei miei pani, e bevete il vino che vi ho mescolato» Prov. 9,1.

Ma quanto all'altra morte di cui il Signore vuole ispirarci il timore della quale morirono i padri loro, si può evitarla; perché anche Mosè mangiò la manna nel deserto, la mangiò pure Aronne e Finees, la mangiarono ancora molti altri che furono accetti a Dio, e non sono morti (di questa morte). Perché compresero il senso affatto spirituale di questo alimento, perché ebbero della manna una fame spirituale, la mangiarono spiritualmente e ne furono spiritualmente saziati. Noi pure oggidì riceviamo un alimento visibile; ma una cosa è il sacramento (esteriore), un'altra la virtù intima del sacramento.

Quanti partecipano dell'altare, e muoiono, e muoiono partecipandovi! Onde l'Apostolo dice; «Egli mangia e beve la propria condanna» 1Cor. 11,29. Il pane che il Signore diede a Giuda non fu forse veleno per lui? Eppure egli lo ricevette. E appena ricevutolo, il nemico entrò in lui; non già che ricevette una cosa cattiva, ma perché, essendo lui cattivo, ricevé con cattive disposizioni una cosa eccellente. Badate dunque, fratelli, di mangiare spiritualmente il pane celeste, portate all'altare un cuore innocente. Se fate tutti i giorni dei peccati, ma che non siano mortali; prima d'accostarvi all'altare, badate a ciò che dite: «Perdonaci le nostre offese, come noi perdoniamo a quelli che ci hanno offeso». In the deed of the Priest Melchisedek we see a type of the Sacrament of the Lord's Sacrifice. For thus it is written in the writings of God “And Melchisedek King of Salem brought forth bread and wine for he was the Priest of the Most High God and he blessed Abraham.” Gen. xiv. 18. That Melchisedek was a type of Christ, the Holy Ghost Himself doth testify in the Psalms, where the First Person of the Holy Trinity, even the Father, is set before us as saying unto the Second Person, that is, the Son “Before the daystar have I begotten thee. Thou art a Priest for ever, after the order of Melchisedek.” cix. 3, 4. And verily that sameness of order cometh of this sacrifice, and procedeth from this, that Melchisedek was the Priest of the Most High God that he offered bread and wine and that he blessed Abraham.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

℟. As they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blest it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said:

What Priest of the Most High God is there, more so than is our Lord Jesus Christ He Who hath made an offering unto God the Father, and the same offering that Melchisedek made, bread and wine, that is to say, His Own Flesh and His Own Blood. And, as touching Abraham, that ancient blessing was spoken likewise by fore-knowledge upon us. For if Abraham believed God and it was accounted to him for righteousness, verily, whosoever believeth God and liveth by faith, the same is found righteous, and is shown unto us that he is already blessed in faithful Abraham, and justified as the Apostle Paul proveth, where he saith: “Abraham believed God and it was accounted unto him for righteousness. Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the Gospel unto Abraham, saying In thee shall all nations be blessed.” Gal. iii. 6-8.

In Genesis, therefore, in order that the Priest Melchisedek might in due order pronounce the blessing upon Abraham, there was first offered a typical sacrifice, consisting of bread and wine. This was the offering which our Lord Jesus Christ completed and fulfilled, when He offered up bread and a cup of wine mingled with water. This fulfilment by Him Who came to fulfill Matth. v. 17, utterly satisfied the truth of the image which had gone before. The Holy Ghost doth by Solomon also clearly foreshadow, as it were in a parable, the Lord's Sacrifice, pointing to the victim slain, and the bread and the wine, and the Altar likewise, and the Apostles as it is written “Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars she hath killed her beasts, she hath mingled her wine, she hath also furnished her table. She hath sent forth her servants, she crieth upon the highest places of the city, saying Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither unto me. As for them that want understanding, she saith to them. Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled for you.” Prov. ix. 1-5.

Doth this death, my brethren, mean that death which is outward and bodily And do not we also die, who eat of that Bread Which cometh down from heaven That death died they, and so shall we also, as far, as I have said, as is meant that death which is outward and bodily.

Martirologio {anticipated}
Anno del Signore 2026, 10 Giugno, Luna 24

Santa Margherita Vedova, Regina di Scòzia, che si addormentò nel Signore il sedici Novembre.
A Roma, sulla via Salaria, la passione del beato Getùlio, uomo chiarissimo e dottissimo, padre dei sette beati fratelli Martiri, avuti dalla santa sua moglie Sinforósa; e dei suoi Compagni Cereàle, Amànzio e Primitivo. Tutti questi, per ordine dell'Imperatore Adriàno, presi da Licinio Consolare, prima furono flagellati, quindi chiusi in prigione, finalmente gettati al fuoco, ma per nulla offesi dalle fiamme, spezzato loro il capo con bastoni, compirono il martirio. I loro corpi furono raccolti da Sinforósa, moglie del beato Getùlio, ed onorevolmente sepolti nell'arenario del suo podere.
Così pure a Roma, sulla via Aurélia, il natale dei santi Basilide, Tripode, Màndaie ed altri venti Martiri, sotto l'Imperatore Aureliàno e il Prefetto della Città Fiatóne.
A Nàpoli, nella Campania, san Màssimo, Vescovo e Martire, il quale, per la valorosa confessione della fede Nicéna, condannato all'esilio dall'Imperatore Costànzo, ivi morì sif nito dagli stenti.
