Dal libro di sant'Ambrogio Vescovo sui Sacramenti
Lib. 4. Cap. 4.
Chi è l'autore dei sacramenti, se non il Signore Gesù? Questi sacramenti sono venuti dal cielo. Come pure dal cielo viene ogni misericordia. Quando Dio fece piovere la manna dal cielo per il suo popolo fu, per verità, un miracolo grande e affatto divino, e senza nessuna fatica il popolo trovava il suo nutrimento. Tu forse dici: Il pane che vedo là, è il mio pane ordinario. Sì, fino alle parole sacramentali, questo non è che del pane; ma avvenuta la consacrazione, questo pane diventa la carne di Cristo. Facciamone la prova. Come del pane può diventare il corpo di Cristo? Mediante la consacrazione. Con quali parole si opera la consacrazione, e chi le pronunzia? (Colle parole) del Signore Gesù. Il resto del sacrificio si compone, infatti, di lodi offerte a Dio, di preghiere per il popolo, per i re e per gli altri: ma quando il sacerdote è per compiere l'augusto mistero, non si serve più delle sue parole, ma di quelle di Cristo.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Mentre essi cenavano, Gesù prese del pane, lo benedisse, lo spezzò e lo diede ai suoi discepoli, dicendo;

Lettura 5
È dunque la parola di Cristo che produce questo Sacramento. Quale parola di Cristo? Quella cioè «per cui sono state fatte tutte le cose» Joann. 1,3. Il Signore comandò, ed il cielo fu: il Signore comandò, e la terra fu: il Signore comandò, e i mari furono: il Signore comandò, ed ogni creatura fu generata. Vedi dunque quanto fattiva è la parola di Cristo. Se dunque c'è tanta forza nella parola del Signore Gesù da dar l'esistenza a ciò che non era; quanto più non avrà la forza di cambiare in altre (sostanze) le sostanze che esistono? Il cielo non era, il mare non era, la terra non era. Ma ascolta la Scrittura: «Egli disse, e le cose furono: egli comandò, e furono create» Ps. 32,10. Per risponderti, ti dirò dunque che questo non era il corpo di Cristo prima della consacrazione; ma dopo la consacrazione, ti dico che allora è il corpo di Cristo. Egli stesso ha parlato, e s'è fatto: egli ha comandato, e s'è realizzato.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Dopo aver cenato, Gesù prese il calice e disse; Questo calice è la nuova alleanza fatta col mio sangue;

Ora ritorna con me alla mia proposizione. Certo, fu miracolo grande e venerabile l'essere piovuta ai Giudei la manna dal cielo. Ma intendi che è più, la manna del cielo, o il corpo di Cristo? Certo il corpo di Cristo, ch'è autore del cielo. Di più, chi mangiò la manna, morì: ma chi mangerà questo corpo, otterrà la remissione dei peccati, e non morrà in eterno. Non senza ragione dunque tu, quando lo ricevi, dici: Così è; confessando anche collo spirito che ricevi il corpo di Cristo. Il sacerdote ti dice: Il corpo di Cristo; e tu rispondi: Cosi è, cioè: È vero. Quello che la lingua confessa, lo conservi il cuore.

Libro 8 della Trinità, prima della metà
Delle cose di Dio non si deve parlare secondo i pensieri e i sentimenti del mondo. Leggiamo le Scritture, cerchiamo di comprendere ciò che leggiamo; e allora noi compiremo un dovere di fede perfetta. Ciò che diciamo della reale presenza di Cristo in noi, sarebbe, da parte nostra, assurdo ed empio, se non ce l'avesse insegnato lui stesso. Difatti lui stesso ci ha detto: «La mia carne è veramente cibo, ed il mio sangue è veramente bevanda. Chi mangia la mia carne e beve il mio sangue dimora in me ed io in lui». Queste parole non lasciano dubbio sulla reale presenza del suo corpo e del suo sangue.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Chi mangia la mia carne e beve il mio sangue,
* Rimane in me, ed io in lui.
℣. Non c'è altra nazione così grande, che abbia a sé vicini i suoi dèi, come il nostro Dio è vicino a noi.

Ora la nostra fede si trova d'accordo colla divina promessa nell'affermare che è veramente la sua carne e il suo sangue. E quando noi abbiamo mangiato il suo corpo e bevuto il suo sangue, essi fanno che noi siamo in Cristo e Cristo in noi. Non è forse questa la verità? Certo, non se ne può dubitare, a meno di negare che Gesù Cristo sia veramente Dio. Lui stesso è dunque in noi colla sua carne, e noi siamo in lui, tanto che, con lui, ciò che noi siamo è in Dio. Che noi poi siamo in lui quando partecipiamo al sacramento del suo corpo e del suo sangue, lo dichiara lui stesso, dicendo: «Questo mondo già non mi vede più, voi invece mi vedrete: poiché io vivo, e voi pure vivete; perché io sono nel Padre mio, e voi in me, ed io in voi» Joann. 14,19.

Nessuno dunque può essere in lui, se non lo possiede in sé: e solo chi mangia la sua carne può essere fatto uno con lui. Egli aveva già insegnato prima il mistero di questa perfetta unione, dicendo: «Come il Padre ch'è vivo inviò me, e io vivo per il Padre; così chi mangia la mia carne, vive per me» Joann. 6,58. Dunque egli vive per il Padre; e come lui vive per il Padre, così noi dobbiamo vivere per (mezzo) della sua carne.

Who invented the Sacraments but the Lord Jesus? The Sacraments came down from heaven, for all counsel is from heaven. Nevertheless, it was a great and wonderful work of God when He rained down manna upon His people, and the people laboured not, and yet were fed. Perchance, thou sayest Here, it is my bread which is used. But that bread is bread only till the Sacramental words are spoken at the Consecration, instead of bread, there cometh to be the Body of Christ. This therefore let us establish. How cometh it that that which was bread becometh the Body of Christ Through the Consecration. And in what words and in Whose language doth the Consecration take place In those of the Lord Jesus. All the other things which are said (in the Liturgy), the ascription of praise to God (in the Preface), the prayer for the people, for kings, and for others which formeth the first part [of the Canon, these are put in the mouth of the Priest.] But when that point is reached when this worshipful Sacrament is to be consecrated, then the Priest useth no more his own words, but Christ's.

℟. As they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blest it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said:

The Priest saith unto thee: “The Body of Christ” ”and thou answerest: “Amen” that is to say, “It is true.” What then thy tongue confesseth, let thine heart hold to.

When we speak concerning the things of God, we must not speak after the manner of men, nor after the manner of the world. Let us read those things which are written, and understand those things which we read and then let us act as having a perfect faith. We shall speak but folly and godlessness if we speak concerning the natural truth of Christ in use and have not learnt at Christ's School how we should speak. He Himself saith “My Flesh is meat indeed, and My Blood is drink indeed. He that eateth My Flesh and drinketh My Blood, dwelleth in Me, and I in him.” There is here no room left for doubt as to What is His Flesh and what is His Blood.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

He is in us by means of His Flesh, and we are in Him when that which we are is with Him in God. Ottava del santissimo Corpo di Cristo.
A Salamina, in Cipro, il natale di san Barnaba Apostolo, il quale, di nazione Cipriota, ordinato dai discepoli Apostolo delle genti insieme a Pàolo, percorse con lui molte regioni, esercitando l'ufficio della predicazione evangelica a lui affidato; finalmente, andato a Cipro, vi onorò il suo Apostolato con un glorioso martirio. Il suo corpo, al tempo dell'Imperatore Zenone, fu ritrovato per rivelazione dello stesso Barnaba, insieme ad una copia del Vangelo di san Mattéo, trascritta di sua mano dallo stesso Barnaba.
Così pure a Salamanca, in Spagna, il natale di san Giovanni da san Facóndo, dell'Ordine degli Eremitani di sant'Agostino, Confessore, illustre per lo zelo della fede, per la santità della vita e pei miracoli. La sua festa si celebra il giorno seguente.

Martyrology {anticipated}
June 11th 2026, the 25th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

The Octave of the most Sacred Body of Christ.
The holy Apostle Barnabas. He was a Cypriot by birth, was by the disciples ordained an Apostle to the Gentiles along with Paul, and went through many countries with him doing that work of preaching the Gospel which had been laid upon them. In the end he went home to Cyprus, where he crowned the dignity of the Apostolate with the glory of martyrdom. Through a revelation from himself his body was discovered in the time of the Emperor Zeno, having with it a copy of the Gospel according to Matthew written with his own hand.
At Aquileia, the holy brethren Felix and Fortunatus, both martyrs. In the persecution under Diocletian and Maximian they were hung upon the rack, and lighted lamps put to their sides, but these were extinguished by the power of God. Boiling oil was poured into their bellies, and at last, forasmuch as they still stood firm in confessing Christ, they were beheaded.
At Bologna, [in the year 1267,] the holy Confessor Parisius, a monk of the Order of Camaldoli.
At Rome is commemorated the translation of the body of holy Gregory of Nazianzus. This sacred body had been brought to Rome from Constantinople and had lain for a long time in the church of the Mother of God at the Campus Martius, when the Supreme Pontiff Gregory XIII, [in the year 1580,] removed it with great pomp to the chapel which he had splendidly decorated in the Basilica of St Peter, and there laid it under the altar with due honour.
℣. And elsewhere many other holy martyrs, confessors, and holy virgins.

Panem nostrum quotidiánum da nobis hódie: et dimítte nobis débita nostra, sicut et nos dimíttimus debitóribus nostris: et ne nos indúcas in tentatiónem: sed líbera nos a malo. Amen.

Padre nostro che sei nei cieli, sia santificato il tuo nome; venga il tuo regno, sia fatta la tua volontà, come in cielo così in terra. Dacci oggi il nostro pane quotidiano, rimetti a noi i nostri debiti, come noi li rimettiamo ai nostri debitori e non ci indurre in tentazione, ma liberaci dal male. Amen.
Ave, o Maria, piena di grazia, il Signore è con te. Tu sei benedetta tra le donne e benedetto è il frutto del tuo seno, Gesù. Santa Maria, Madre di Dio, prega per noi peccatori, adesso e nell'ora della nostra morte. Amen.
