A solennità sì santa vada congiunto il gaudio,

La sola dottrina di san Paolo mi sembra bastare largamente a darvi una fede certa in questi santi misteri dei quali siete stati fatti degni, e che vi hanno resi con Cristo uno stesso corpo, per così dire, e uno stesso sangue. L'abbiamo inteso ora cantare «che nostro Signore Gesù Cristo la notte in cui veniva tradito, prese del pane, e dopo aver fatto il ringraziamento, lo benedisse, lo spezzò e lo diede ai suoi discepoli, dicendo: Prendete e mangiate: questo è il mio corpo. E preso il calice, dopo aver fatto il ringraziamento disse: Prendete e bevete: questo è il mio sangue» 1Cor. 11,23. Ora, parlando del pane, avendo detto: «Questo è il mio corpo»;
chi ardirà d'ora innanzi di dubitarne? E avendo detto lui stesso così positivamente: «Questo è il mio sangue»; chi mai potrà dubitarne e dire che questo non è il suo sangue?
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Mentre essi cenavano, Gesù prese del pane, lo benedisse, lo spezzò e lo diede ai suoi discepoli, dicendo;

Altra volta in Cana di Galilea mutò l'acqua in vino, che ha una certa rassomiglianza col sangue: e noi stimeremo poco degno di lui, il credere di aver mutato il vino nel suo sangue? Invitato a nozze terrene, egli fece questo miracolo che stupì tutti i convitati: e non saremo noi assai più fermamente convinti d'aver egli messo a nostra disposizione il corpo e sangue suo perché noi lo prendiamo con tutta certezza, come vero suo corpo e suo sangue? Perché sotto la specie del pane ci dà il (suo) corpo e sotto la specie del vino ci dà il (suo) sangue: così che quando mangi il corpo e bevi il sangue di Cristo, tu partecipi realmente al suo corpo e al suo sangue. È così che noi diventiamo Cristiferi, cioè portatori di Cristo nelle nostre persone, quando riceviamo nelle nostre membra il suo corpo e il suo sangue: è così, secondo san Pietro, «che noi diveniamo partecipi della natura divina» Petri 1,4.

Altra volta, conversando coi Giudei, Cristo diceva: «Se non mangerete la mia carne, e non berrete il mio sangue, non avrete in voi la vita» Joan. 6,54. Non avendo compreso spiritualmente queste parole, essi si ritirarono scandalizzati, immaginandosi ch'egli li esortasse a mangiare della carne umana. Anche nell'antico testamento c'erano dei pani di proposizione; ma appartenendo essi all'antico testamento, finirono con questo. Nel nuovo testamento abbiamo un pane celeste e un calice salutare, che santificano l'anima e il corpo. Queste sante cose essendo il corpo e il sangue di Cristo, di grazia, non le riguardare come se fossero puramente e semplicemente del pane, puramente e semplicemente del vino. Checché ne dicano i sensi, ti rassicuri la tua fede. Non giudicare la cosa dal gusto: ma la fede, non lasciandoti alcun dubbio, ti renda assolutamente certo che tu hai l'onore di partecipare al corpo e al sangue di Cristo.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Io sono il pane di vita; i vostri padri mangiarono la manna nel deserto, e morirono;

Omelia di san Cirillo Vescovo d'Alessandria
Libro 4 su Giovanni, c. 17
«Chi mangia, dice, la mia carne e beve il mio sangue, dimora in me ed io in lui» Joann. 6,57. Come infatti se si versa della cera liquefatta su altra cera, ne viene necessariamente che l'una si confonda affatto con l'altra; così, chi riceve la carne ed il sangue del Signore, si unisce talmente a lui, che Cristo risiede in lui ed egli in Cristo. Una comparazione analoga si trova in Matteo: «Il regno de' cieli, egli dice, è simile al lievito, che una donna prese e nascose in tre staia di farina» Matth. 13,33. Come « un po' di lievito, dice san Paolo, fa fermentare tutta la pasta» Gal. 5,9, così una piccola eulogia attira a sé l'uomo intiero, e lo riempie della sua grazia; e in questo modo Cristo dimora in noi e noi in Cristo.

℟. Chi mangia la mia carne e beve il mio sangue,

Se dunque noi vogliamo conseguire la vita eterna, se desideriamo aver in noi il largitore dell'immortalità, accorriamo con ardore a ricevere la divina eulogia; e badiamo che il diavolo, tendendoci insidie, non ci arresti per un timore pregiudiziale alle nostre anime. Ciò che affermi è giusto (dirai tu); tuttavia non ignoriamo che sta scritto che «mangia e beve la propria condanna, chi indegnamente mangia di questo pane e beve di questo calice» Cor. 11,9. Conseguentemente, io esamino me stesso, e mi trovo indegno. Tu che parli così, chiunque tu sia, quand'è che ne sarai dunque degno? quando tu ti presenterai a Cristo? Perché tu sei indegno per i tuoi peccati, e se tu pecchi sempre (chi, infatti, comprende i propri falli? dice il Salmista) Ps. 18,13 rimarrai privo per sempre di questa vivificante santificazione.

Paul saith that our Lord Jesus Christ, “the same night in which He was betrayed, took bread and, when He had given thanks, He brake it, and gave it unto His disciples, saying Take, eat this is My Body. After the same manner also He took the cup,” and gave thanks, “and said:” Take this, and drink it this is My Blood. Since therefore it is He Who hath definitely stated and said, touching that Bread “This is My Body” -who will dare any longer to doubt that It is so And since it is He again that hath absolutely affirmed and said, touching that cup “This is My Blood” who is he that will doubt any longer, or say that It is not His Blood
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

℟. As they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blest it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said:

At the beginning of His ministry, at Cana in Galilee, the Lord turned water into wine, a thing which hath some qualities in common with blood and shall we deem Him less worthy that we should believe Him, when He turneth wine into Blood When He was bidden to that marriage wherein twain were made one flesh, He did the beginning of His miracles to the amazement of all men; and shall we less surely hold that He hath given us His Body and Blood to be our meat and drink, or take them with weaker faith that they are indeed His Body and His Blood? Under the appearance of bread He giveth unto us His Body, and, under the appearance of wine, His Blood and when thou shalt come to receive, it is on the Body and Blood of Christ that thou wilt feed, being made a partaker of His Body and of His Blood. Thus indeed it is that we become Christbearers, namely, by carrying about Christ in our bodies, when we receive His Body and Blood into our own frames. Thus, as the blessed Peter hath it, we are “partakers of the Divine nature.” 2 Pet. i. 4.

Christ once said, in conversing with the Jews “Except ye eat the Flesh of the Son of Man, and drink His Blood, ye have no life in you.” John vi. 53. But they took not spiritually that which He said, and “from that time many of His disciples went back, and walked no more with Him.” 66. They thought that He had bidden them to eat flesh. The Old Testament also had Shewbread, but this Old Testament bread was now to have an end. The bread of the New Testament is “the Bread Which cometh down from heaven” 50, the cup of the New Testament, the Cup of Salvation, that Bread and that Cup Which hallow both souls and bodies. Wherefore I will have thee to understand that the Bread and Wine whereunto thou art to come, are not mere common bread or mere common wine for they are the Body and the Blood of Christ. Even if thy senses do indeed deny this fact, yet let faith make thee right sure of it. Judge not the Thing by the taste thereof, but let faith assure thee beyond all doubt thou art partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ.

Book iv. on John, ch. 17
“He that eateth My Flesh and drinketh My Blood,” saith the Lord, “dwelleth in Me, and I in him.” If a man take two pieces of wax and melt them, and pour the one into the other, they necessarily mingle so also, he that receiveth the Body and Blood of the Lord doth become so joined with the Lord that he is to be found in Christ and Christ in him. Another comparison thou wilt find in Matthew. The Lord there saith “The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, [till the whole was leavened,]” xiii. 33, because, as Paul saith, “a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.” Gal. v. 9. So also doth a little of this Blessing draw the whole man unto Itself, and fill him with Its grace and thus doth Christ dwell in us, and we in Christ.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

A Nicéa, nella Bitinia, sant'Antonina Martire, la quale, nella stessa persecuzione, per ordine del Preside Priscilliàno fu percossa con bastoni, sospesa nell'eculeo, lacerata e abbruciata nei fianchi, e finalmente uccisa con la spada.
A Roma, nella Basilica Vaticana, san Leóne terzo. Papa, al quale Iddio mirabilmente restituì gli occhi e la lingua, che gli erano stati tolti dagli empi.
In Tràcia sant'Olimpio Vescovo, che dagli Ariani fu cacciato dalla sua sede, e morì Confessore.
In Cilicia sant'Anfióne Vescovo, che fu egregio Confessore al tempo di Galério Massimiàno.
In Egitto sant'Onófrio Anacoreta, il quale passò religiosamente la vita per sessant'anni in un vasto deserto, e, illustre per grandi virtù e per meriti, volò al cielo. Le sue opere insigni furono narrate dall'Abate Pafnùzio.

At Rome, upon the Aurelian Way, the holy soldiers Basilides, Cyrinus, Nabor, and Nazarius, all martyrs, who were thrust into prison under Aurelius the Prefect, in the persecution under Diocletian and Maximian, because of their Christian profession, and after they had been torn with armed scourges, were beheaded.
At Nice, in Bithynia, the holy martyr Antonina, who in the same persecution was, by the order of Priscillian the President, beaten with clubs, hung upon the rack, torn in the sides, burnt with fire, and at last slain with the sword.
In Thrace, [in the fourth century,] holy Olympius, Bishop [of Enos,] who was thrust out of his see by the Arians and died a Confessor.
