Dalla Lettera Enciclica di Papa Pio XI
Se non che nessuna potenza creata era bastevole alla espiazione delle colpe umane, se il Figlio di Dio non avesse egli assunta la natura umana da redimere. E ciò lo stesso Salvatore degli uomini annunziò per bocca del Salmista: «Tu non hai voluto né vittime né oblazioni, ma mi hai formato un corpo: non hai gradito né olocausti né sacrifizi espiatori: allora io dissi: Ecco vengo io» Hebr. 10,5-7. E in verità «egli prese le nostre infermità e portò i nostri dolori; per le nostre iniquità fu ferito» Is. 53,4-5 e «i peccati nostri portò egli stesso nel proprio corpo sopra il legno; scancellando il chirografo del decreto scritto contro di noi, ed egli, affiggendolo alla croce, lo tolse di mezzo, affinché morti al peccato, vivessimo alla giustizia» 1Petri 2,24. E sebbene la copiosa redenzione di Cristo con sobrabbondanza «ci condonò tutti i peccati» Coloss. 2,14, tuttavia, per quella mirabile disposizione della divina Sapienza, onde nel nostro corpo si ha da compiere quello che manca ai patimenti di Cristo a pro del corpo di lui che è la Chiesa, noi possiamo, anzi dobbiamo aggiungere alle lodi e soddisfazioni «che Cristo in nome dei peccatori tributò a Dio» 1Petri 2,24, le nostre proprie lodi e soddisfazioni.

Ma conviene sempre ricordare, che tutto il valore espiatorio dipende unicamente dal cruento sacrificio di Cristo, il quale si rinnova, senza interruzione, sui nostri altari in modo incruento; poiché «una stessa è la Vittima, un medesimo è ora l'oblatore mediante il ministero dei sacerdoti, quello stesso che si offrì sulla croce, mutata solamente la maniera dell'oblazione» Con.Trid. sess. 22,c2; per la qual cosa con questo augusto sacrificio Eucaristico, si deve congiungere la immolazione così dei ministri, come degli altri fedeli, affinché anche essi si offrano quali «vittime vive, sante, gradevoli a Dio» Rom. 12,1.Che anzi san Cipriano non dubita di affermare «che il sacrificio del Signore non si compie colla debita santificazione, se non risponderà alla passione l'offerta e il sacrificio nostro» Lett. 63, n. 381. Perciò l'Apostolo ci ammonisce perché «portando nel nostro corpo la mortificazione di Gesù» 2Cor. 4,10 e con Cristo sepolti e innestati a lui per la somiglianza colla sua morte Rom. 6,4-5, non solo crocifiggiamo la nostra carne, i vizi e le passioni, «fuggendo la corruzione della concupiscenza che è nel mondo» Petri 1,4, ma «la vita di Gesù si manifesti così nei nostri corpi» 2Cor. 4,10, e fatti partecipi del suo sacerdozio eterno, possiamo offrire «doni e sacrifizi per i peccati» Hebr. 5,1.

«Ma quando furono a Gesù e lo videro già morto, non gli ruppero le gambe, ma uno dei presenti, con un colpo di lancia, gli aprì il costato, e subito ne uscì sangue ed acqua» Joann. 19,23. Grande certo e inaudito prodigio, che da un corpo esanime uscisse sangue ed acqua. Se non che, in questo fatto, la sapienza di Dio ci ha voluto far vedere il più gran mistero, cioè la sua unione e quella della Chiesa. Una figura infatti di questa spirituale unione fu data innanzi, quando si narra che dal costato dello stesso Adamo addormentato fu tolta una costola, e con essa fu formata Eva madre di tutti, che prefigurava la Chiesa. Significava allora lo Spirito Santo, che sarebbe venuto il vero e spirituale Adamo, il quale, plasmato dalla virtù del Paraclito, mentre dormiva sulla croce, dal suo costato, manante acqua e sangue, si sarebbe formata una bella sposa, senza ruga e senza macchia, la Chiesa.

Questi invero sono i sacramenti ecclesiastici per mezzo dei quali si lava e santifica tutto il corpo della Chiesa. Nel lavacro certo dell'acqua di rigenerazione, ch'è santificato dalla morte di Cristo, esso viene mondato dalla colpa originale. Nel sangue poi del Redentore non solo viene purificato da ogni colpa, ma gli viene aperto altresì l'ingresso del regno celeste. Tutte due queste cose convengono nello stesso effetto, né l'una senza dell'altra vale a conferire la salvezza: infatti senza il sacramento del battesimo e la remissione dei peccati non può alcuno conseguire la eredità della futura beatitudine. Questo in tutto il mondo insegna santa madre Chiesa, ed è confermato da moltissime testimonianze delle Scritture divine. Inoltre «il fatto è attestato anche da chi vide uscire da Cristo acqua e sangue, e la sua testimonianza è degna di fede» Joann. 13,35. Questi cioè è l'Apostolo ed Evangelista Giovanni, il quale fu amato dal Signore con speciale amore.

Commemorazione: Ss. Viti, Modesti atque Crescentiae Martyrum
Vito fu battezzato ancora fanciullo all'insaputa del padre; il quale appena lo seppe, non omise nulla per distaccare il figlio dalla religione cristiana. E siccome questi rimaneva inflessibile, lo consegnò al giudice Valeriano perché lo castigasse con batterlo. Ma persistendo egli sempre nella sua risoluzione, fu restituito al padre. Mentre il padre pensava di punirlo più severamente, Vito, avvertito da un Angelo, emigrò, in compagnia di Modesto e Crescenzia, suoi educatori, in terra straniera; dove raggiunse tale rinomanza di santità, che giuntane la1 fama a Diocleziano, questo imperatore lo fece chiamare, affinché gli liberasse il figlio da ossessione diabolica. Avvenuta la liberazione, l'ingrato imperatore non avendolo potuto persuadere colle più grandi ricompense a venerare gli dei, caricatolo di catene lo fece gettare in prigione insieme con Modesto e Crescenzia. Poi avendoli trovati ancor più inflessibili, comandò di gettarli in una enorme caldaia ripiena di piombo liquefatto, di resina e pece bollente; in cui cantando essi, come i tre fanciulli Ebrei, sacri inni, ne vennero tolti ed esposti ai leoni, i quali, accovacciatisi, si misero a lambirne i piedi. Quindi infuriato l'imperatore, perché vedeva la moltitudine commuoversi davanti al miracolo, ordinò che distesi su d'un cavalletto, fossero loro tagliate le membra e divelte le ossa. Nel frattempo ci furono tuoni, folgori, e gran terremoti, onde i templi degli dèi rovinarono e molti ne rimasero oppressi. Fiorenza, nobil dama, imbalsamò i loro resti e li seppellì onorevolmente.

No effort on our part could have availed for the expiation of human sin, if the Son of God had not assumed human nature in order to redeem men from their sins. This truth the Saviour of mankind hath made known in the words of the Psalmist: Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me; in burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure; then said I, Lo, I come. However, we must always remember this, to wit: The expiatory value of our acts is dependent upon the Bloody Sacrifice of Christ; which same is presented bloodlessly on our altars, without pretermission. Note that in both the Unbloody and the Bloody Sacrifice, the Victim is one and the same. He that offered himself on the Cross is the very same that doth offer himself by means of our ministerial priesthood; the only difference being the manner in which the Sacrifice is made; for which reason there must needs be conjoined to the august Sacrifice of the Holy Eucharist, and act of immolation from the priests and the faithful, whereby they offer up themselves, also, to be a reasonable, holy, and living sacrifice, acceptable unto God. With this in mind Saint Cyprian dared to affirm that the Sacrifice of the Lord is not complete so far as our sanctification is concerned until our personal offerings and sacrifices are brought into union with his passion. To which end we have been given apostolic admonition: That we should always bear about in the body of the dying of the Lord Jesus; and thereby, buried with him by Baptism unto death, not only can we crucify the flesh with its affections and lusts, thus escaping the corruption that is in the world, through lust, but also thereby the life of Jesus can be made manifest in our bodies; and so, having been made partakers of Christ in his holy and eternal priesthood, we should offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.

But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs, but one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. Truly this is a great and unheard-of wonder, that from a lifeless body should gush out blood and water! And thereby we are constrained to believe that God willed to set forth the great mystery, namely, the oneness between Christ and the Church. Consider how aforetime a figure of this spiritual union was given us in the Scriptures, where we are told that, from the side of Adam as he slept, one of his ribs was taken, wherefrom was formed Eve, the mother of us all, which same is understood to be a type of the Church. For thereby the Holy Ghost signified that there was to be a true and spiritual Adam, fashioned by the same Paraclete, from whose side, while he slept on the Cross, the Church would be formed, a comely spouse radiant with youth, that is, without spot or wrinkle, or any such thing.

For the blood and water are the Sacraments of the Church, whereby the whole body of the Church is washed and sanctified. Commemoration of: Sts. Vitus, Modestus and Crescentia, Martyrs
This Vitus was a child who was baptized without his father's knowledge. When his father had found it out, he used his best endeavours to dissuade his son from the Christian religion, but as he found him persistent in it, he handed him over to Valerian the judge to be whipped. But as he still remained as unshaken as before, he was given back to his father. But while his father was turning over in his mind to what severe discipline to subject him, Vitus, being warned by an Angel, fled out of the country, in company with his foster-parents Modestus and Crescentia. In his new home he gained great praise for holiness, so that the fame of it came to Diocletian, which Emperor sent for him to deliver his own child which was vexed with a devil. Him Vitus delivered, but when the Emperor found that with all his great gifts he could not bring him to worship the gods, he had the ingratitude to cast him and Modestus and Crescentia into prison, binding them in fetters. But when they were found in their prison more faithful than ever to their confession, the Emperor commanded them to be thrown into a great vessel full of melted lead, resin, and pitch. Therein these three, like the three Holy Children in the burning fiery furnace, sang praise to God and upon that they were haled forth and cast to a lion, but he lay down before them, and licked their feet. Then the Emperor, being filled with fury, more especially because he saw that the multitude that looked on were stirred up at the miracle, commanded Vitus, Modestus, and Crescentia to be stretched upon a block and their limbs crushed, and their bones rent one from the other. While as they were dying there came great thunderings, and lightnings, and earthquakes, so that temples of the gods fell down, and many men were killed. As for that which remained of the Martyrs, the noble lady Florence took it, and embalmed it with spices, and honourably buried it.
