Dalla Lettera Enciclica di Papa Pio XI

Quanto poi l'oblazione nostra e il nostro sacrifìzio avrà più perfettamente corrisposto al sacrificio del Signore, ossia noi avremo immolato l'amor proprio e le nostre passioni e crocifissa la nostra carne con quella mistica crocifissione di cui parla l'Apostolo, tanto più copiosi frutti di propiziazione e di espiazione raccoglieremo per noi e per gli altri. Mirabile legame stringe infatti i fedeli tutti con Cristo, come quello che corre fra il capo e le altre membra del corpo, e similmente quella misteriosa comunione dei Santi, che professiamo per fede cattolica, onde e gli individui e i popoli non solamente sono uniti fra loro, ma altresì collo stesso «capo che è Cristo, dal quale tutto il corpo compaginato e connesso per via di tutte le giunture di comunicazione, secondo l'operazione proporzionata di ciascun membro, prende l'aumento proprio, per la sua edificazione nella carità» Ephes. 4,15-16. Questa fu la preghiera che lo stesso Cristo Gesù, Mediatore tra Dio e gli uomini, vicino a morire rivolse al Padre: «Io in essi e tu in me, affinché siano consumati nella carità» Joann. 17,13.

A quella maniera adunque che la consacrazione professa e conferma l'unione con Cristo, così l'espiazione, e purificando dalle colpe, incomincia la unione stessa, e colla partecipazione dei patimenti di Cristo la perfeziona, e coll'oblazione dei sacrifizi a pro dei fratelli, la porta all'ultimo compimento. E tale appunto fu il disegno della misericordia di Gesù, quando volle svelare a noi il suo Cuore cogli emblemi della sua passione e acceso della fiamma dell'amore, così noi argomentando da una parte la malizia infinita del peccato, ammirando dall'altra la infinita carità del Redentore, detestassimo più vivamente il peccato e più ardentemente ricambiassimo l'amore. E in verità lo spirito di espiazione o di riparazione ebbe sempre le prime e principali parti nel culto con cui si onora il Cuore Sacratissimo di Gesù, ed è certo il più consono all'origine, alla natura, alla efficacia, alle pratiche proprie di questa particolare devozione, come è confermato dalla storia e dalla pratica, dalla sacra liturgia e dagli atti dei Sommi Pontefici.

Omelia di san Bernardino da Siena
Giovanni soggiunge: «Uno dei soldati con una lancia gli aprì il costato e subito ne uscì sangue ed acqua» Joann. 19,24. O amore che tutto sciogli! come per la redenzione nostra abbandonasti il nostro amante? Difatti, affinché il diluvio dell'amore inondasse da ogni parte, furono rotti su di noi i grandi abissi; vale a dire, i penetrali del Cuore di Gesù, che, raggiungendo l'intimo, una lancia crudele non risparmiò. «Ne uscì sangue ed acqua». Il sangue a redenzione, ma anche l'acqua scorse a purificazione; onde fu formata la Chiesa dal costato di Cristo, affinché sappia lei essere eternamente l'unica e diletta da Cristo, e affinché riconosca quanto sia dispiaciuta la colpa per cui uscì in tal guisa il sangue divino dell'uomo Dio vivo e morto. L'acqua letteralmente non uscì confusa col sangue. Infatti non si sarebbe potuto comprendere dagl'ignoranti, se fosse uscita mescolata col sangue. E forse tutto il sangue uscì da quel corpo divino in segno di tutto l'amore donato, dopo di che uscì l'umore acqueo. Ciò avvenne certamente per un gran mistero, affinché (cioè) prima uscisse dal medesimo corpo il prezzo del riscatto, e poi l'acqua nella quale è significata la moltitudine dei popoli redenta. Poiché ci sono molte acque, molti popoli; tuttavia quelli che appartengono alla fede cristiana formano un solo popolo fedele, cosicché non siano acque, ma acqua che uscì dal costato di Cristo, come nel capo decimo della prima (lettera) ai Corinti dice l'Apostolo: Unico pane, unico corpo formiamo noi tutti quanti partecipiamo di quell'unico pane e di quell'unico calice. E di nuovo agli Efesini, al capo quarto dice: Un solo Dio, una sola fede, un solo battesimo.

Però è da notar bene che il costato di Cristo si dice aperto, non ferito: poiché propriamente non si può fare una ferita se non in un corpo vivo. Infatti l'Evangelista Giovanni dice: «Uno dei soldati con una lancia gli aprì il costato»; affinché, nel costato aperto, impariamo l'amore del suo Cuore fino alla morte, ed entriamo a quell'ineffabile suo amore onde egli è giunto a noi. Appressiamoci dunque al suo Cuore, Cuore grande, Cuore secreto, Cuore che a tutto pensa, Cuore che tutto conosce, Cuore che ama, anzi arde d'amore; e comprendiamone la porta aperta almeno nella veemenza dell'amore; entriamo cuoriformi nel secreto nascosto fin dall'eternità, ma ora rivelato nella morte quasi dall'aperto costato; poiché l'apertura del costato dimostra l'apertura del tempio eterno, dove è la felicità perfetta di tutti gli esseri.

According to that degree of perfection wherewith our oblation and our sacrifice do correspond to the Sacrifice of our Lord, that is to say, to the extent that we have immolated love of self and its passions, and thereby have crucified our flesh in that mystical crucifixion concerning which the Apostle wrote, in that same degree shall we gather the fruits of propitiation and expiation for ourselves and for others. For a wondrous bond doth join all the faithful unto Christ, namely, that bond which uniteth the Head with the members of the body, which is to say, the Communion of the Saints, a bond full of mystery in which we as Catholics do nevertheless verily believe. By virtue of this bond, individuals and nations are not only united the one with the other, but likewise with the Head itself, which is Christ: from whom the whole body, fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the working in due measure of each several part, maketh increase of the body unto the building up of itself in love. This verily was the prayer which Christ Jesus himself, the Mediator between God and man, made at the time of his death: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be perfected into one.

Therefore, even as our effort at consecration doth manifest and strengthen our union with Christ, so our practice of expiation (by purifying us from sins) is the beginning of such union; wherefrom our participation in the sufferings of Christ is the means of perfecting such union; and the offering which we make to him of our sacrifices for the welfare of our brethren bringeth such union to its final consummation. Blood for redemption flowed out, but also water for cleansing; whence the Church was formed from the side of Christ, that she might know herself ever to be the sole-beloved one of Christ, and that she might understand how greatly sin displeaseth him, as she seeth his divine blood flow forth from the God-Man, both in life and in death. For if the divine blood be shed for us, then we cost not a little.

Nevertheless, it is especially deserving of our attention that the side of Christ is said to have been pierced, that is, set open, not wounded, since a wound cannot properly be said to be inflicted except on a living body. For John the Evangelist saith: One of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side: that through this side thus opened, we might become aware of the love of his Heart, even unto death, and that we might enter into that unutterable love of his, through the same channel whereby it came unto us. Let us draw near then to his Heart, a deep Heart, a hidden Heart, a Heart thinking of all, a Heart knowing all, a Heart loving, yea, even on fire with love. Let us also recognize at least in the vehemence of his love that the gate is open; with our hearts made like unto his, let us enter into that secret place, hidden from all eternity, but now in death revealed, as it were, through the open side; for the opening of his side is a figure of the opening of the eternal temple, where is consummated the everlasting happiness of every creature.
