2 Allorché Saul si scelse tremila Israeliti. Dei quali duemila stavano con Saul in Macmas e sul monte Betel, e mille erano con Gionata in Gabaa di Beniamino. E rimandò il resto del popolo ognuno alle sue tende.
3 Gionata poi trucidò il presidio dei Filistei ch'era in Gabaa. Ouando l'udirono i Filistei, Saul fece suonare la tromba per tutto il paese dicendo: Lo sappiano gli Ebrei.
4 E tutto Israele udì questa notizia: et Saul ha distrutto la stazione dei Filistei», allora Israele si levò contro i Filistei: ond'è che il popolo eruppe in grida dietro a Saul in Galgala.

1 Sam 13:5-8
5 Anche i Filistei si radunarono per combattere contro Israele (con) trentamila carri e seimila cavalieri e altra gente numerosa come l'arena ch'è sul lido del mare. E salendo si accamparono a Macmas, a oriente di Betaven.
6 Allorché gli uomini d'Israele si accorsero d'essere così ridotti alle strette (perché il popolo si era disanimato) si nascosero nelle spelonche e nelle buche, e anche fra le rocce, negli antri e nelle cisterne.
7 Gli altri Ebrei però passarono al di là del Giordano nella terra di Gad e di Galigala. Ma mentre Saul era tuttora in Galgala, tutto il popolo che lo seguiva, si impaurì.
8 Egli poi aspettò sette giorni secondo l'ordine di Samuele: ma non arrivando Samuele a Galgala, il popolo si sbandò da lui.

Dalla Lettera Enciclica di Papa Pio XI
Ma come potrà dirsi che Cristo regni beato nel cielo se può esser consolato da questi atti di riparazione? «Dà un'anima che ami e comprenderà quello che dico» In Joann. Evang. tract, 26,4 rispondiamo colle parole di Agostino, che fanno proprio al nostro proposito. Ogni anima infatti veramente infiammata nell'amore di Dio, se colla considerazione si volge al tempo passato, vede meditando e contempla Gesù sofferente per l'uomo, afflitto, in mezzo ai più gravi dolori «per noi uomini e per la nostra salute» dalla tristezza, dalle angosce e dagli obbrobrii quasi oppresso, anzi «schiacciato dai nostri delitti» Is. 53,5 e in atto di risanarci colle sue lividure. Con tanta maggior verità le anime pie meditano queste cose, in quanto che i peccati e i delitti degli uomini, in qualsiasi tempo commessi, furono la causa che il Figlio di Dio fosse dato a morte, ed anche al presente cagionerebbero per sé a Cristo la morte, accompagnata dagli stessi dolori e dalle medesime angoscie, giacché ogni peccato si considera rinnovare in qualche modo la passione del Signore: «Di nuovo in loro stessi crocifiggendo il Figlio di Dio, esponendolo al ludibrio» Hebr. 6,6.

Che se a cagione anche dei nostri peccati futuri, ma previsti, l'anima di Gesù divenne triste sino alla morte, non è a dubitare che qualche conforto non abbia anche fin d'allora provato per la previsione della nostra riparazione, quando «a lui apparve l'Angelo del cielo» Luc. 22,43, per consolare il Cuore di lui oppresso dalla tristezza e dalle angoscie. E così anche ora in modo mirabile ma vero, noi possiamo e dobbiamo consolare quel Cuore sacratissimo che viene continuamente ferito dai peccati degli uomini sconoscenti, giacché, come si legge anche nella sacra liturgia, Cristo stesso si duole, per bocca del Salmista, di essere abbandonato dai suoi amici: «Il mio Cuore si aspettò obbrobri e miserie, mi aspettai chi entrasse a parte di mia tristezza, ma non vi fu, e qualche consolatore, e non l'ho trovato» Ps. 68,21

Aggiungasi che la passione espiatrice di Gesù Cristo si rinnova e in certo qual modo si continua nel suo corpo mistico, la Chiesa. Infatti, per servirci nuovamente delle parole di sant'Agostino «Cristo patì tutto ciò che doveva patire; né al numero dei patimenti nulla più manca. Dunque i patimenti sono compiuti, ma nel capo; rimanevano tuttora le sofferenze di Cristo da compiersi nel corpo» In Ps. 86. Ciò che Gesù stesso dichiarò, quando a Saulo «spirante ancora minacce e stragi contro i discepoli» Act. 9,1 disse: «Io sono Gesù che tu perseguiti» Act. 9,5; chiaramente significando che le persecuzioni mosse alla Chiesa, vanno a colpire gravemente lo stesso suo Capo divino. A buon diritto, dunque, Cristo sofferente ancora nel suo corpo mistico desidera averci compagni della sua espiazione; così richiede la nostra unione con lui; poiché essendo noi «il corpo di Cristo e membra congiunte» 1Cor. 12,27 quanto soffre il capo, tanto devono con esso soffrire anche le membra.

Omelia di san Pietro Canisio Prete
Ripensa teco con diligenza nel tuo animo, quanto è stata ineffabile quella carità onde il sommo Dio, tra le più grandi angustie del Cuore e gli obbrobrii di tutto il mondo, subì per te vilissimo vermiciattolo quella crudelissima morte di croce. Rifletti come Cristo Salvatore mostrò a tutti i suoi la più grande liberalità. Infatti stando una volta in mezzo al popolo, gridava così: «Chi ha sete, venga a me e beva» Joann. 7,37: mostrandosi pronto a venire in aiuto a tutte le necessità di ognuno. Considera come ti porse a bere con estrema liberalità il sangue prezioso del suo Cuore, quando aperto il sacro costato, versò tutto il sangue che ancor rimaneva nel corpo.

But in what sense can it be said that our expiatory practices can give consolation to Christ, since he is now reigning in heavenly joy? We answer in the words of Saint Augustine (from a passage entirely appropriate to this subject): Give me a lover, and he will feel the truth of what I say. Every soul which is on fire with the love of God, if it but turns its thoughts to the past, doth in its meditation perceive and contemplate Christ suffering for mankind; afflicted by grief in the midst of sorrows endured for us men and for our salvation; almost overcome by afflictions, vexations, and reproaches; yea, bruised by our sins; with whose stripes we are healed. And devout souls will have an appreciation in proportion to their understanding of these mysteries, if they perceive that the sins and crimes of men (no matter when committed) were the real reason why the Son of God was condemned to death, and that sins committed in this present are able in some wise to cause the death of Christ, renewing as they do, the cause of that selfsame death, with its sufferings and agonies, which was accomplished on the Cross; for every sin must be said to renew, in some fashion, the Lord's passion, concerning which we read in the Scriptures: They crucify themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

And since in the agony in the Garden the soul of Christ became sorrowful even unto death, in view of our own future sins which were foreseen by him, there can be no doubt that at the same time he was in some way consoled, through the provision of our acts of reparation, when the Angel from heaven appeared unto him to comfort him in the sorrows of his Heart, which was so bowed down with weariness and grief. And so, even at this present time, we can and we ought to console, in a mystical but nonetheless real manner, that most Sacred Heart: which same is being wounded continually by the sins of thankless men. It is in this sense, namely, that Christ is grieved over his abandonment by his friends that we are accustomed to interpret the holy liturgy whenever we say in the words of the Psalmist: Thy rebuke hath broken my Heart; I am full of heaviness; I looked for some to have pity on me, but there was no man, neither found I any to comfort me.

Reading 6
To the foregoing we should add that the expiatory passion of Christ is renewed, and in a certain manner continued, in his mystical body, which same is the Church. In this connection, once more the words of Saint Augustine are appropriate: Christ suffered all that he needed to suffer; nothing at all is lacking in the number of his sufferings; therefore his sufferings are completed in him as the Head; but there remaineth even yet the sufferings of Christ to be endured in the body. Which truth verily the Lord Jesus himself made known, at the time that Saul was breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples, to whom the Lord said: I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. By these words he plainly affirmed that persecutions visited on the Church are in reality directed against the Head of the Church. Meet it is therefore that Christ, thus still suffering in his mystical body, should desire to have us sharers in his own work of expiation, even as our own need moveth us to desire and seek union with him. And since we are the body of Christ, and members of his very flesh and bones, whatever the Head must suffer all the members of the body must needs suffer together with him.

Exhortationes domesticæ. Medit. 6-7
Have thou all diligence to turn over in thy mind this matter, namely, That he, who is God over all, endured with unutterable charity, a most bitter death on the Cross, in the exceeding anguish of his Heart, whilst the whole world mocked him! And this he did for thee, who art but a paltry little worm! Meditate on the boundless generosity which Christ the Preserver manifested to all his own people. For at one time, standing in the midst of the people, he cried out: If any man thirst, let him come to me and drink; thereby shewing how ready he was to welcome everyone, and help him in his every need. Consider how freely he giveth thee to drink of his Heart's precious blood, considering that his sacred side was set open, wherefrom he poured forth whatever blood was still left in his body.

Ad Edéssa, in Mesopotàmia, sant'Efrem, Diacono Edesséno e Confessore, il quale, dopo molte fatiche sostenute per la fede di Cristo, illustre per dottrina e santità, sotto l'Imperatore Valènte, si riposò in Dio, e dal Papa Benedétto decimoquinto fu proclamato Dottore della Chiesa universale.
A Roma, sulla via Ardeatma, il natale dei santi Martiri Marco e Marcelliàno fratelli, i quali nella persecuzione di Diocleziàno, dal Giudice Fabiàno presi e legati ad un tronco, furono trafitti nei piedi con acuti chiodi, e perchè non cessavano di lodar Cristo, furono trapassati con lance nei fianchi, e colla gloria del martirio passarono al regno celeste.
A Màlaga, nella Spagna, i santi Martiri Ciriaco, e Pàola Vergine, che furono lapidati, e tra i sassi resero le anime al cielo.
A Tripoli, nella Fenicia, san Leonzio soldato, il quale sotto il Preside Adriàno, insieme con Ipàzio Tribuno e Teódolo, che convertì a Cristo, per mezzo di crudeli tormenti giunse alla corona del martirio.

June 18th 2026, the 3rd day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Edessa in Mesopotamia, St. Ephraem, deacon of the church of Edessa in the time of Emperor Valens and confessor. After suffering many trials for the faith of Christ and gaining great renown for holiness and learning, he went to rest in the Lord. He was declared a doctor of the Universal Church by Pope Benedict XV.
At Rome, on the Ardeatine Way, in the persecution of Diocletian, the birthday of the saintly brothers Mark and Marcellian, martyrs, who were arrested by the judge Fabian, tied to a stake, and had sharp nails driven into their feet. Because they would not cease praising the name of Christ they were pierced through the sides with lances, and thus went to the kingdom of heaven with the glory of martyrdom.
At Malaga in Spain, the holy martyrs Cyriacus and the virgin Paula, who were overwhelmed with stones, and yielded up their souls to God.
At Tripoli in Phoenicia, in the time of the governor Adrian, St. Leontius, a soldier, who attained the crown of martyrdom through bitter torments together with the tribune Hypatius and Theodulus, whom he had converted to Christ.
