8 Allora Gionata disse: Ecco che noi andiamo verso quegli uomini. Se, quando ci avranno visti,
9 Ci diranno: Fermatevi finché veniamo da voi; noi ci fermeremo al nostro posto, e non saliremo fino a loro.

1 Sam 14:12-15
12 Egli uomini del presidio parlarono e dissero a Gionata e al suo scudiere: Salite da noi, e v'insegneremo qualche cosa. Gionata allora disse al suo scudiere: Saliamo, seguimi; perché il Signore li ha dati nelle mani d'Israele.
13 Gionata quindi salì arrampicandosi colle mani e coi piedi, e dietro a lui il suo scudiero. Pertanto alcuni cadevano dinanzi a Gionata, altri ne uccideva il suo scudiero che lo seguiva.
14 Si ebbe così una prima strage, nella quale Gionata e il suo scudiere uccisero circa venti uomini nello spazio di un mezzo iugero, che è quanto un paio di buoi suole arare in un giorno.
15 Onde grande fu lo spavento negli alloggiamenti e per le campagne: parimenti tutti quelli del presidio ch'erano usciti a predare, s'impaurirono, e il paese fu in preda allo sgomento, e fu come un miracolo di Dio.

Efrem, di nazione Siro, nacque a Nisibi. Giovane ancora si portò dal vescovo Giacomo, dal quale battezzato, in breve fece tali progressi nella scienza e santità, da esser fatto maestro della fiorente scuola di Nisibi, città della Mesopotamia. Dopo la morte del vescovo Giacomo, presa Nisibi dai Persiani, andò a Edessa; là prima si fermò alquanto tra i monaci della montagna, poi, per sottrarsi alle visite numerosissime che vi riceveva, abbracciò la vita eremitica. Ordinato diacono della chiesa di Edessa, e ricusato il sacerdozio per umiltà, divenne celebre in ogni specie di virtù, e si applicò ad acquistare, colla vera pratica della sapienza, la pietà e la religione. Avendo riposta in Dio ogni sua speranza, ebbe in disprezzo tutte le cose mondane, aspirando continuamente alle divine ed eterne.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Il Signore lo fece ricco, lo guardò dai nemici e lo protesse da coloro che lo insidiavano

Condotto dallo Spirito Santo, andò a Cesarea di Cappadocia, dove s'incontrò col portavoce della Chiesa, Basilio, e tutti due si legarono con santa amicizia. Per combattere gl'innumerevoli errori che allora molestavano la Chiesa, e illustrare maggiormente i misteri di nostro Signore Gesù Cristo, diede alla luce molti lavori scritti in lingua Siriaca, e tradotti quasi tutti in lingua Greca; e, al dir di san Girolamo, egli giunse a tanta rinomanza, che i suoi scritti si leggevano pubblicamente in certe Chiese dopo la lettura della Scrittura.

Tutte queste pubblicazioni, piene di dottrina sì luminosa, meritarono a questo gran Santo, che, tuttora vivente, lo si onorasse come un Dottore della Chiesa. Compose altresì cantici poetici in lode della Vergine Maria e dei Santi: onde venne meritamente appellato dai Siri la cetra dello Spirito Santo. Egli risplende soprattutto per la sua straordinaria e tenera devozione alla Vergine Immacolata. Pieno di meriti, morì in Edessa, nella Mesopotamia, il 18 di Giugno, sotto l'imperatore Valente: Papa Benedetto XV, dietro istanza di molti Cardinali di santa Romana Chiesa, Patriarchi, Arcivescovi, Vescovi, Abati e famiglie religiose, con decreto della Sacra Congregazione dei Riti, lo dichiarò Dottore della Chiesa universale.

Sermone sull'esercizio della vita monastica
È una gran cosa intraprendere e compiere un'opera buona, rendersi accetti a Dio e utili al prossimo, e piacere allo stesso sommo e dolcissimo Signor nostro Gesù Cristo, che dice: «Voi siete il sale della terra, e la colonna dei cieli». La fatica della tua sofferenza, dilettissimo, è come un sonno; ma poi il riposo che seguirà alla fatica è inenarrabile e inestimabile. Attendi perciò con diligenza a te stesso, per non perderle tutte due insieme, non ricercando né l'una né l'altra, cioè la gioia presente e l'eterna. Studiati piuttosto di conseguire la virtù perfetta, ornata e caratterizzata da tutte le disposizioni che Dio ama. Se tu la conseguirai, non irriterai mai Dio, né farai torto al tuo prossimo.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Questi ha praticato davanti a Dio grandi virtù e ha lodato il Signore con tutto il suo cuore:

Ora questa virtù (della carità) è detta la sola virtù, ed è d'una bellezza unica perché possiede in sé lo splendore delle diverse virtù. Il diadema dei re non può esser finito senza che delle pietre preziose e dei brillanti vi siano incastonati e intrecciati; così pure quest'unica virtù non può sussistere senza il fulgore delle varie virtù. Essa infatti è similissima a un diadema reale. Perché come questo, se ci manca una pietra o una perla non può risplendere pienamente sul capo del re; così pure questa unica virtù, se non è circondata dal fulgore delle altre virtù, non può chiamarsi virtù perfetta. Lo stesso avviene delle vivande preziosissime, preparate con condimenti squisitissimi, ma mancanti di sale. Difatti come queste vivande preziose non possono mangiarsi senza sale, così una virtù che parrebbe completa e possedere l'onore e la gloria delle varie virtù, rimarrebbe certo vile e sprezzevole, se ne fossero assenti l'amore di Dio e del prossimo.

Marco e Marcelliano, fratelli Romani, imprigionati dal prefetto Fabiano a causa della fede cristiana, furono poi legati ad un palo, fissati i piedi con chiodi. Al giudice che diceva loro: Ravvedetevi, miserabili, e liberate voi stessi da questi tormenti, risposero: Non abbiamo gustato mai delizie più gioconde di quelle che proviamo ora nel soffrire volentieri per la causa di Gesù Cristo, nel cui amore abbiamo ora cominciato ad essere fissati. Dio voglia che ci lasci soffrire queste cose, finché saremo rivestiti di questo corruttibile corpo! E in mezzo ai tormenti cantando dì e notte le lodi divine, furono infine trafitti con frecce, giungendo così alla gloria del martirio. I loro corpi vennero sepolti sulla via Ardeatina.

Reading 4
Ephraem was of Syrian descent, and son of a citizen of Nisibis. While yet a young man he went to the holy bishop James, by whom he was baptized, and he soon made such progress in holiness and learning as to be appointed master of a flourishing school at Nisibis, a city of Mesopotamia. After the death of the bishop James, Nisibis was captured by the Persians, and Ephraem went to Edessa. Here he settled first on the mountain among the monks, and then, that he might avoid the great numbers of men who flocked to him, he adopted the eremitical life. He was ordained deacon of the Church of Edessa, but refused the priesthood out of humility. He was conspicuous with the splendour of every virtue and strove to acquire piety and religion by professing true wisdom. He placed all his hope in God alone, despised all human and transitory things, and always longed for the divine and eternal.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

℟. The Lord made him honourable, and defended him from his enemies, and kept him safe from those that lay in wait for him;
* And gave him perpetual glory.

When, led by the Spirit of God, he went to Caesarea in Cappadocia, there he saw Basil, that mouthpiece of the Church, and both enjoyed mutual companionship in a suitable manner. In order to refute the countless errors which were rife at that time, and which were troubling the Church of God, and in order to expound zealously the divine mysteries of our Lord Jesus Christ, he wrote many studies in Syrian, almost all of which have been translated into Greek. St. Jerome beareth witness that he attained such fame, that his writings were read publicly in certain churches after the reading from the Scriptures.

His works taken as a whole, so infused with the bright light of learning, brought it about that this holy man, while yet alive, was held in great honour, and was even considered a Doctor of the Church. He also composed songs in verse, in honour of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, and of the Saints, and for this reason he was appropriately named by the Syrians the Harp of the Holy Ghost. He was noted for his great and tender devotion towards the Immaculate Virgin. He died, rich in merits, at Edessa in Mesopotamia on the 18th day of June in the reign of Valens. Pope Benedict XV, at the instance of many Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, Patriarchs, Archbishops, Bishops, Abbots, and religious communities, declared him by a decree of the Congregation of Sacred Rites to be a Doctor of the universal Church.

Sermo de vita et exercitatione monastica
Clearly it is a good thing to begin and to accomplish, to be acceptable to God and useful to one's neighbour, to please our most high and gracious ruler, Christ Jesus, who saith: Ye are the salt of the earth and the pillars of the heavens. The burden of your affliction, dearly beloved, is as a sleep; then there followeth unspeakable and priceless rest from labour. Therefore, watch thyself carefully, so that while thou followest after neither, wholeheartedly, thou shouldst not lose both the present and the eternal joy. Study rather to attain to the perfect virtue, adorned and stamped by all that God loveth. If thou dost strive after this, thou wilt never either anger God nor injure thy neighbour.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. This is he which wrought great wonders before God, and praised the Lord with all his heart.
* May he pray for all people, that their sins may be forgiven unto them.

Moreover this virtue is called special and singular, having within itself the beauty of different virtues. We cannot have a royal diadem without precious stones and gleaming pearls arranged and fitted together; so likewise this single virtue cannot remain without the splendour of other different virtues. For it is, indeed, most like a kingly crown. For as in the latter case, if one stone or one pearl be missing it cannot shine perfectly upon the royal head; so, then, this special virtue cannot be called a perfect virtue, unless it is worthily connected with other virtues. Again, it is like unto very rich food, furnished with exquisite seasonings, but lacking salt. For as those rich dishes cannot be eaten without salt, so this simple virtue may be adorned with the glory and honour of different virtues, but if a man lack the love of God and of his neighbour, he is wholly worthless and contemptible.

Commemoration of: Sts. Mark and Marcellian, Martyrs
Mark and Marcellian were two brothers, Romans, who were arrested by Duke Fabian for believing in Christ, and fastened to a beam, to which their feet were nailed. The Judge said to them Wretched creatures, do think for a moment, and free yourselves from such suffering. But they answered him We have never enjoyed any dinner so much as we do what we are now undergoing here for Jesus Christ's sake. We have got ourselves a little fast to His love now. Would that He would let us suffer this as long as we are clad in this corruptible body. Still suffering, they for a day and a night sang the praises of God continually, and in the end were thrust through with darts, and so attained the glory of Martyrdom. Their bodies are buried upon the Way to Ardea.

Ottava del sacratissimo Cuore di Gesù.
A Firénze santa Giuliàna Falconièri Vergine, Fondatrice delle Sorelle dell'Ordine dei Servi della beata Vergine Maria, dal Sommo Pontefice Clemènte duodecimo ascritta nel numero delle sante Vergini.
A Milano i santi Martiri Gervàsio e Protàsio fratelli, dei quali il primo dal Giudice Astàsio fu fatto percuotere con flagelli piombati finché non rese lo spirito; l'altro, percosso con bastoni, fu fatto decapitare. I loro corpi, per divina rivelazione, furono ritrovati dal beato Ambrogio cosparsi di sangue e così incorrotti, come se fossero stati uccisi in quel giorno : nella loro traslazione, un cieco, toccando il feretro, ricuperò la vista, e moltissimi, infestati dai demoni, furono liberati.
Nel monastero di Val di Castro, nel Picèno, il natale di san Romualdo Ravennàte, Anacoreta e Padre dei Monaci Camaldolési, il quale ristabilì la disciplina eremitica, che in Italia era quasi estinta, e mirabilmente la propagò. La sua festa si celebra il sette Febbraio, giorno nel quale le sue sacre reliquie furono trasportate a Fabriàno.
Ad Arèzzo, in Toscana, i santi Martiri Gaudènzio Vescovo e Colmàzio Diacono, uccisi dal furore dei pagani al tempo di Valentiniàno.
Nello stesso giorno san Bonifàcio, Vescovo e Martire, discepolo del beato Romuàldo. Mandato dal Romano Pontefice Gregório quinto a predicare il Vangelo in Rùssia, essendo passato illeso per il fuoco, ed avendo battezzato il Re e il popolo, fu ucciso dall'infuriato fratello del Re, e così ricevette la desiderata corona del martirio.
A Ravénna sant'Ursicino Martire, il quale, sotto Paolino Giudice, dopo moltissimi tormenti, perseverando impavido nella confessione del Signore, con la decapitazione compì il martirio.
A Sozópoli, nella Pisidia, san Zósimo Martire, il quale, nella persecuzione di Traiano, sotto il Preside Domiziano, dopo acerbi tormenti fu decapitato, e così vittorioso passò al Signore.

Martyrology {anticipated}
June 19th 2026, the 4th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

The Octave of the most Sacred Heart of Jesus.
At Florence, St. Juliana Falconieri, virgin, foundress of the Sisters of the Order of the Servants of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was placed among the holy virgins by the Sovereign Pontiff, Clement XII.
At Milan, [in the first century,] the holy martyrs Gervase and Protase, brothers. The former, by order of the judge Astasius, was scourged with leaded whips for so long that he expired. The latter, after being scourged with rods, was beheaded. Through divine revelation their bodies were found by St. Ambrose. They were partly covered with blood, and as free from corruption as if they had been put to death that very day. When the translation took place, a blind man recovered his sight by touching their relics, and many persons possessed by demons were delivered.
At the monastery in the valley of Castro in Piceno, the birthday of St. Romuald, anchoret, a native of Ravenna. He was the founder of the Camaldolese monks, and he restored and greatly extended monastic discipline, which was much relaxed in Italy. His feast is observed on the 7th of February, on which day his sacred relics were transferred to Fabriano.
At Arezzo in Tuscany, the holy martyrs Gaudentius, bishop, and Culmatius, deacon, who were murdered by the furious heathen, during the reign of Valentinian.
Also, St. Boniface, martyr, a disciple of blessed Romuald, who was sent by the Roman Pontiff, Gregory V, to preach the Gospel in Russia. Having passed through fire uninjured, and baptized the king and his people, he was killed by the enraged brother of the king, and thus gained the palm of martyrdom which he ardently desired.
At Ravenna, [likewise in the first century,] St. Ursicinus, martyr, who remained constant through many torments in the confession of martyrdom by being beheaded.
At Sozopolis, under the governor Domitian, during the persecution of Trajan, St. Zosimus, martyr, who suffered bitter tortures, was beheaded, and thus triumphantly went to heaven.
