Invero dove per gl'infermi sicura e stabile sicurezza e quiete, se non nelle piaghe del Salvatore? Tanto più sicuro io vi abito, quanto più potente è egli a salvare. Freme il mondo, pressa il corpo, insidia il diavolo: io non cado; poiché sono fondato su solida pietra. Ho commesso un gran peccato: si turberà la coscienza, ma non si sconcerterà, perché mi ricorderò delle piaghe del Signore. «Egli infatti è stato piagato per le nostre iniquità» Is. 53,5. Chi è tanto condannato a morte, che non possa esser liberato dalla morte di Cristo? Se dunque mi verrà in mente medicina tanto potente ed efficace, non potrò essere già spaventato da alcun morbo maligno.

Io pertanto fidente, ciò che mi manca da me, me lo prenderò dalle viscere del Signore, perché le misericordie vi abbondano; né vi mancano i fori per cui fluiscono. «Hanno forato le sue mani ed i piedi» Ps. 21,17 e con una lancia hanno aperto il suo costato; e per questi fori mi è lecito succhiare il miele dalla pietra e l'olio dal sasso più duro Deut. 32,13; cioè gustare e vedere come è dolce il Signore Ps. 33,9. Egli aveva pensieri di pace, e io non lo sapevo Ger. 29,11. «Infatti chi ha conosciuto il pensiero del Signore? o chi è stato suo consigliere?» Rom. 11,34. Ma la chiave che apre, è diventata per me un chiodo penetrante affinché io vegga la volontà del Signore. Perché non la vedrò per la ferita? Grida il chiodo, grida la piaga che veramente Dio è in Cristo che riconcilia con sé il mondo.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Il ferro trapassò l'anima sua, e raggiunse il suo Cuore, affinché egli sappia compatire alle mie infermità. E aperto l'arcano del Cuore per le ferite del corpo; è aperto quel gran mistero di pietà, sono aperte le «viscere di misericordia del nostro Dio per le quali l'Oriente ci ha visitati dall'alto» Luc. 1,68. Perché non sarebbero aperte le viscere per le piaghe? In che infatti più chiaramente che nelle tue viscere sarebbe apparso che tu, o Signore, sei dolce e mite «e pieno di misericordia?» Ps. 85,14. Invero «nessuno ha misericordia più grande di quello che dà la sua vita» Joann. 15,13 per i votati e condannati a morte. Quindi è merito mio la misericordia del Signore. Non son del tutto privo di merito, finché egli non lo sarà di misericordia. E se «le misericordie del Signore sono ab eterno e in eterno» Ps. 102,17 anch'io «le misericordie del Signore canterò in eterno» Ps. 88,2.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Omelia di sant'Agostino Vescovo
Trattato 120 su Giovanni, n. 2-3
«Ma quando furono a Gesù, e lo videro già morto, non gli ruppero le gambe, ma uno dei soldati con una lancia gli aprì il costato, e subito n'uscì sangue ed acqua» Joann. 19,33. L'Evangelista ha usato una parola studiata, poiché non ha detto: gli percosse il costato, o ferì, o altro di simile, ma aprì, per mostrarci che la porta della vita ci si apre in certo modo là donde sono sgorgati i Sacramenti della Chiesa, senza i quali non si ha accesso alla vita, che è la sola vera vita. Quel sangue che fu versato, fu versato per la remissione dei peccati. Quell'acqua ci tempera la bevanda della salvezza, ed essa è insieme bagno purificatore e bevanda. Questo significava l'ordine dato a Noè d'aprire una porta nel fianco dell'arca per farvi entrare gli animali che non dovevano perire nel diluvio, e che rappresentavano la Chiesa.

℟. Grazie a Dio.

Perciò la prima donna fu tratta dal costato dell'uomo addormentato e fu chiamata la vita e la madre dei viventi. Perché simboleggiava un gran bene, prima che commettesse il gran male della prevaricazione. Questo secondo Adamo, chinato il capo, s'addormentò sulla croce, affinché ne fosse formata la sua sposa, che uscì dal costato di lui addormentato. O morte per cui i morti rianno la vita! Che più puro di questo sangue? Che più salutare di questa ferita? «Il fatto, dice, è attestato da chi lo vide, e la sua testimonianza è degna di fede; ed egli sa di dire il vero, e (lo attesta) affinché anche voi crediate» Joann. 1,33. Commemorazione: S. Julianae de Falconeriis Virginis
Santa Giuliana apparteneva ai nobili Falconieri. Nella culla, tra i vagiti, pronunciò spontaneamente il nome di Gesù e di Maria. A quattordici anni, rifiutò le nozze e una sostanziosa eredità. Fece voto solenne di verginità nelle mani di san Filippo Benizi, e ricevette da lui, per prima, l'abito religioso delle Mantellate. Vedendo che molte altre giovani nobili la stavano seguendo e che la stessa sua madre le chiedeva di essere educata da lei. Giuliana fondò l'ordine delle Mantellate. Si distinse per la sua umiltà, per il desiderio di preghiera e per la sua mortificazione. Ammalata, non riusciva a deglutire nulla, e perciò non le era possibile ricevere la Comunione che tanto desiderava. Allora pregò un sacerdote di posarle l'Ostia sul petto. Quando il sacerdote gliela accostò, subito l'Ostia scomparve e Giuliana spirò sorridente.

The world may rage around me; the body may weigh me down; the devil may lay snares for me; but if I hide me there I cannot fall, for I am founded on the firm Rock. For in all truth: He was wounded for our transgressions. And there is no sin so deadly that it cannot be remítted through Christ's death. His thoughts are thoughts of peace, and I knew it not. For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: but one of the soldiers with a spear opened his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. Note that the Evangelist maketh use of a word of special significance. He saith not: Penetrated his side: nor yet: Wounded: nor any other thing; but rather: Opened: that thereby in a sense the door of life might be thrown open, from whence the Sacraments of the Church have flowed forth, without which there is no entrance into the life which is the only true life. For that blood was shed for the remission of sins; and that water hath brought into being the life-giving flagon, which same is both the laver of Baptism and the cup that giveth refreshment to them that thirst. All this was announced long before, to wit, when Noah was commanded to make a door in the side of the ark, through which might enter all living creatures which were not destined to perish in the flood; and this same is a figure of the Church.

Reading 8
Another figure is also to be found in the first woman. For she was made out of the side of the first man whilst he slept a deep sleep; and she was called: Life: or as it may be interpreted: The Mother of all living. Thus was indicated the great good which was later to come to pass, even before the great evil of transgression had come into being. Here, in the Gospel, the second Adam is shewn as bowing his head, and sleeping his deep sleep upon the Cross, that a bride might be formed for him out of that which came forth from his side as he slept. What a death, whereby the dead are raised anew to life! How clean and cleansing is this blood! What is more healthgiving than this wound! And he that saw it, saith he, bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. He said not: That ye might know; but: That ye might believe. For he knoweth, who hath seen, that he, who hath not seen, might believe his record. And believing belongeth more to the nature of faith than doth seeing.

Nell'isola Ponza il natale di san Silvério, Papa e Martire, il quale, non avendo voluto ristabilire Antimo, Vescovo eretico, deposto dal suo predecessore Agapito, fu da Belisario, per istigazione dell'empia Teodora Augusta, cacciato in esilio, ed ivi morì sfinito per i molti disagi sopportati per la fede cattolica.
A Roma la deposizione di san Novàto, che fu figlio del beato Pudénte Senatore e fratello di san Timòteo Prete, e delle sante Vergini di Cristo Pudenziàna e Prasséde, i quali dagli Apostoli furono ammaestrati nella fede. La loro casa, cambiata in chiesa, porta il Titolo del Pastóre.

He refused to restore the [Eutychian] heretic Anthimus, who had been deposed [from the Patriarchate of Constantinople] by his predecessor, Pope Agapitus, and in consequence of this, through a plot of the wicked Empress Theodora, was exiled by Bellisarius to the island of Ponza, where he died for the Catholic faith, broken down by sufferings and hardships, [in the year 538.]
