I figli d'Israele stavano di fronte all'avversali rio da quaranta giorni. I quaranta giorni, a causa delle quattro stagioni e delle quattro parti del mondo, significano la vita presente, nella quale il popolo Cristiano non cessa di combattere contro un Golia e il suo esercito, cioè contro il diavolo e i suoi angeli. E tuttavia esso non potrebbe vincere, se il. vero David Cristo, non fosse disceso col bastone, cioè col mistero della croce. Poiché prima della venuta di Cristo, fratelli carissimi, il demonio se n'andava sciolto, ma venuto Cristo, fece di lui ciò ch'è detto nel Vangelo: «Nessuno può entrare nella casa di un forte e rubargli le sue robe, se prima non lega il forte» Marc. 3,27. Venne dunque Cristo e legò il demonio.

In lui allora si prefigurò ciò che poi si adempì nel Signore Gesù Cristo. Venne infatti il vero Davide, Cristo, il quale andando a combattere contro lo spirituale Golia, cioè contro il diavolo, portò lui stesso la sua croce. Osservate, fratelli, dove Davide colpì Golia: lo colpì proprio sulla fronte, dove non c'era il segno della croce. Poiché come il bastone simboleggiò la croce, così anche quella pietra, onde fu percosso, figurava Cristo Signore.

Omelia di sant'Ambrogio
Libro 4 al capo 5 di Luca circa la fine del libro
Dal momento che Signore ebbe resa, con diversi miracoli, a molti la sanità, la folla di quelli che bramavano d'essere guariti non si lasciò più arrestare dalle difficoltà di tempo e di luogo. La sera incombeva, ed essi lo seguivano ancora : sul lago accorsa (la folla) premeva : e tanto, che fu costretto entrare nella barca di Pietro. Questa barca Matteo ce la rappresenta sbattuta dai flutti e Luca la mostra piena di pesci ciò ti fa conoscere le agitazioni della Chiesa al suo nascere, e la sua prodigiosa fecondità di poi. I pesci figurano quelli che navigano in questa vita. Là Cristo dorme ancora per i discepoli, qui comanda ; egli fatti dorme nei tiepidi, veglia nei perfetti.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Ho peccato, e i miei peccati si son moltiplicati più dell'arena del mare; e non son degno di guardare la sublimità del cielo per la grandezza della mia iniquità; perché ho provocato il tuo sdegno,

Non corre alcun rischio questa barca che porta la sapienza, da cui è assente la perfidia e che voga soffio della fede. Come infatti poteva temere mentre aveva per pilota colui nel quale la Chiesa è rafforzata? Il pericolo si trova dove c'è poca fede; qui c'è sicurezza, perché l'amore è perfetto. E mentre agli altri è comandato di gettare le proprie reti, soltanto a Pietro è detto : « Prendi il largo » Luc. 5, 4 cioè penetra profondo della dottrina. Che cosa infatti di più alto che scoprire l'abisso delle ricchezze (celesti) e conoscere il Figlio di Dio e confessare la sua divina generazione? Generazione che lo spirito umano non riesce certo pienamente a comprendere coll'investigazione della ragione, ma che l'abbraccia la pienezza della fede.

Neither can they hope to overcome him, were it not for the true David, that is, Christ, with His staff, that is, with the Mystery of His Cross. For before Christ came, my dearly beloved brethren, the devil was at large. But when Christ came, He did to him what is written in the Gospel, where it is said “How can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man?” Christ therefore came, and bound the devil.

℟. Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.

He assaileth us, not by violence, but by persuasion he asketh, not seizeth, our consent.

When the Lord wrought so many works of healing, neither time nor place could restrain the people from seeking health. Evening came, and they still followed Him He went down to the lake, and they still pressed upon Him and therefore He entered into Peter's ship. This is that ship, which spiritually up to this very hour, according to the expression of Matthew, is buffeted by tempests, but still, according to Luke, is filled with fishes, this signifying, that, for a while, to labour is present to the Church, but, hereafter, it shall be to rejoice. The fishes are they which swim in the troublous waters of human life. In this ship also spiritually doth Christ, for His disciples, still sleep, and still command; for He sleepeth for the lukewarm, and watcheth for the perfect.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

℟. My sins are many, yea, they are more in number than the sands of the sea; I am not worthy to look up toward heaven because of the multitude of my iniquities; for I have provoked thee to anger;

Martirologio {anticipated}
Anno del Signore 2026, 22 Giugno, Luna 7

Presso Nola, città della Campania, il natale del beato Paolino, Vescovo e Confessore, il quale da nobilissimo e ricchissimo divenne povero ed umile per Cristo, e, non avendo più nulla, si fece schiavo per riscattare il figlio di una vedova, che i Vàndali, devastata la Campania, avevano condotto schiavo nell'Africa. Fu poi illustre non solo per dottrina e gran santità di vita, ma anche per la sua potenza contro i demoni. Le sue splendide lodi furono celebrate nei loro scritti dai santi Ambrogio, Girolamo, Agostino e Gregorio Papa. Il suo corpo, trasferito a Benevénto e di là a Roma, finalmente, per ordine del Sommo Pontefice Pio decimo, fu restituito a Nola.
A Londra, in Inghiltérra, san Giovanni Fisher, Vescovo di Rochester e Cardinale, che per la fede cattolica e il primato del Romano Pontefice, per ordine del Re Enrico ottavo, fu decapitato.
Sul monte Ararat la passione di diecimila santi Martiri, crocifissi.
A Verulam, in Inghiltérra, sant'Albano Martire, il quale, al tempo di Diocleziano, offrì se stesso, travestito, per un Chierico ospite, che aveva accolto in casa sua e dal quale era stato istruito nei precetti della fede Cristiana; e perciò, dopo battiture ed acerbi tormenti, fu decapitato. Insieme con lui patì anche uno dei soldati, il quale, mentre lo conduceva al supplizio, per strada si convertì a Cristo, e subito decapitato colla spada, meritò di esser battezzato col proprio sangue. San Beda Venerabile descrisse questo nobile combattimento di sant'Albano e del suo Compagno, sostenuto per Dio.
Nella Samaria, in Palestina, millequattrocentottanta santi Martiri uccisi per la fede di Cristo, sotto il Re dei Persiani Cósroa.
Nello stesso giorno san Nicéta, Vescovo della città di Remesiàna, illustre per dottrina e per santi costumi.

Così pure a Roma la Traslazione di san Flavio Clemènte, uomo Consolare e Martire, fratello di santa Plautilla e zio della beata
Vergine e Martire Flàvia Domitilla: dall'Imperatore Domiziano, col quale aveva retto il Consolato, fu ucciso per la fede di Cristo. Il suo corpo, ritrovato nella Basilica di san Clemènte Papa, fu ivi riposto con solenne pompa.

Martyrology {anticipated}
June 22nd 2026, the 7th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Verulamium, in Britain, the holy martyr Alban, who in the time of Diocletian gave himself up for a clerk whom he had received as a guest, and was beheaded, [in the year 303,] after being scourged and sharply tormented. One of the soldiers who led him to execution was turned to Christ upon the way and was made worthy to be baptized in his own blood.
At Nola, a city of Campania, the blessed Confessor Paulinus, Bishop of that city, [in the year 431,] who, whereas he was a very noble and wealthy person, became for Christ's sake poor and lowly, and then in addition gave himself up for a slave in order to redeem a widow's son whom the Vandals had carried off as a prisoner to Africa when they wasted Campania. He was illustrious, not only on account of his learning and of the abounding holiness of his life, but also on account of his power against evil spirits. His praises have been set forth in their writings with great force by holy Ambrose, Jerome, Augustine, and Gregory [the Great.] His body has been brought to Rome, and lieth in honour along with the body of the holy Apostle Bartholomew in the church of that Apostle in the island in the Tiber.
At Mount Ararat, ten thousand holy martyrs, who were crucified in the second century.
At Samaria, one thousand four hundred and eighty holy martyrs, who suffered under Chosroes, King of the Persians.
At Rome is commemorated the translation of the holy Consular Flavius Clemens, martyr, who was put to death for Christ's faith's sake by the Emperor Domitian. His body was found in the church of holy Pope Clement, and there solemnly reburied.
On the same day, holy Niceas, Bishop of Romacium, famous for his teaching and holy life.

At Rome, [in the year 1276,] the blessed Pope Innocent V, who, with gentleness and wisdom, toiled for the upholding of the Church, and for the liberty and unity of Christians. His veneration having been represented to Pope Leo XIII, that Pontiff approved and confirmed it.
