Breve di Pio X 18 Settembre 1908
Ponzio Meropio Anicio Paolino nato nell'anno dell'era cristiana 353 a Bordeaux nella Guascogna da illustrissima famiglia di cittadini Romani, sortì ingegno svegliato e dolci maniere. Sotto il maestro Ausonio si distinse nell'eloquenza e nella poesia. Nobilissimo e ricchissimo, entrato nella carriera degli onori fu, nel fior dell'età, innalzato alla dignità di senatore. Quindi venne come console in Italia, e preso possesso della provincia della Campania, fissò la sua sede a Nola. Qui, tocco da luce superna, dietro i celesti prodigi che illustravano il sepolcro del Martire prete Felice, cominciò ad aderire più strettamente alla vera fede di Cristo, che già sentiva nell'anima. Depose pertanto il fascio littorio immacolato, e ritornato in Francia, sbattuto per terra e per mare da varie e grandi disgrazie e calamità, perdé un occhio; ma risanatone da san Martino vescovo di Tours, venne battezzato dal beato Delfino vescovo di Bordeaux.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Sprezzante delle grandi ricchezze che possedeva, vendé i suoi beni distribuendone il prezzo ai poveri, e, abbandonata la moglie Teresa, mutata patria e rotto ogni vincolo di carne, se ne andò in Spagna, seguace della venerabile povertà di Cristo, stimata da lui più preziosa di tutto il mondo. A Barcellona mentre assisteva devotamente alla Messa nella solennità del S. Natale, preso dal popolo, sollevatosi all'improvviso stupito di lui, venne, sebbene riluttante, consacrato prete dal vescovo Lampidio. Quindi tornò in Italia ritirandosi a Nola per devozione a san Felice, presso il cui sepolcro costruì un monastero, dove iniziò con alcuni compagni una vita cenobitica. Questo uomo già illustre per essere stato senatore e console, una volta abbracciata la stoltezza della croce, con stupore di quasi tutto il mondo, vestito di rozza tonaca, passava i giorni e le notti in veglie e digiuni e in continua contemplazione delle cose celesti. Ma, crescendo sempre più la fama della sua santità, venne assunto al vescovado di Nola, lasciando nell'esercizio di questo pastorale ministero mirabili esempi di pietà, sapienza e soprattutto di carità.

Tra queste cose, compose scritti illustranti la religione e la fede, e spesso anche celebrò con bei versi le gesta dei Santi, meritandosi così l'altissima lode di poeta cristiano. Tutti i più grandi uomini che fiorivano allora per santità e dottrina, li ebbe suoi intimi amici ed ammiratori. Moltissimi accorrevano a lui da ogni parte siccome a maestro di perfezione cristiana. Devastata la Campania dai Goti, diede ogni suo avere, senza ritenersi neppure il necessario per vivere, per nutrire i poveri e riscattare gli schiavi. E più tardi, mentre i Vandali infestavano quelle terre, avendogli una vedova domandato di riscattarle il figlio preso dai nemici, avendo impiegato tutti i beni in opere di pietà, offrì schiavo se stesso per lui; e carico di catene venne deportato in Africa. Finalmente rimesso in libertà, non senza palese soccorso divino, e ritornato a Nola, rivide il buon pastore l'ovile diletto; e là in età di settantotto anni, s'addormentò placidissimamente nel Signore. Il corpo, sepolto vicino alla tomba di san Felice, fu poscia, al tempo dei Longobardi, trasportato a Benevento, e indi, sotto Ottone III, a Roma nella basilica di san Bartolomeo nell'isola Tiberina. Papa Pio X poi ordinò che le sacre reliquie di Paolino fossero restituite a Nola, ed innalzò la sua festa a rito doppio per tutta la Chiesa.

Sermone, ovvero Lettera 34 sul Gazofilacio
Il Signore poteva, dilettissimi, far tutti egualmente ricchi, cosicché nessuno avesse avuto bisogno dell'altro; ma per un disegno della sua infinita bontà il misericordioso e benigno Signore ha fatto così per provare in essi le tue disposizioni. Ha fatto il misero per conoscere il misericordioso; ha fatto il povero, per esercitare il ricco. Il fine delle ricchezze è per te la povertà dei fratelli, se «avrai pensiero del miserabile e del povero» Ps. 40,2 né riterrai solo per te quel ch'hai ricevuto; ché perciò Dio ti ha dato in questo mondo anche la parte di lui, affinché ti dovesse quanto dei suoi doni avessi di tua spontanea volontà offerto agli indigenti, e ti arricchisse a sua volta della parte di lui nel giorno dell'eternità. Poiché è Cristo che ora riceve per loro, e allora egli pure restituirà per essi.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Ristora l'anima bisognosa, e nel dì cattivo non temerai dell'ira futura. Difatti dice; «Beato chi ha pensiero del povero e del miserabile; nel giorno cattivo il Signore lo libererà» Ps. 40,2. Lavora dunque, fratello, e coltiva questo campo della tua terra, perché ti produca un buon raccolto, pieno di pingue frumento, con un grande guadagno, il frutto del seme moltiplicato per cento. Nella ricerca e cultura di questo possesso e lavoro, la avarizia è santa e salutare; poiché siffatta avidità che merita il regno celeste e desidera l'eterno bene, è la radice di tutti i beni. Bramate pertanto siffatte ricchezze, e possedete tal patrimonio, che il creditore debba compensarvi con frutti centuplicati, per arricchire così i vostri eredi con voi dei beni eterni. Perché quella sola possessione è veramente grande e preziosa, che non carica il suo possessore d'un peso temporale, ma l'arricchisce d'una rendita eterna.

Lettura 9
Osservate dunque, dilettissimi, la giustizia con costante sollecitudine ed opera assidua, non solo per acquistare i beni eterni, ma ancora per meritare d'evitare innumerevoli mali. Perché noi abbiamo bisogno d'un grande aiuto e protezione, e ci occorre la intercessione di molte e incessanti preghiere. Poiché il nostro avversario non dorme, ma il nemico vigila ed ostruisce tutte le nostre vie per nostra rovina. Inoltre, molte croci, pericoli senza numero, flagelli di malattie, calori febbrili e dolori acuti ci assalgono l'anima in questo mondo, ne accendono le faci delle cupidigie; ovunque si celano lacci preparati, ovunque fanno orrore spade impugnate, la vita si trascorre fra insidie e lotte, e camminiamo su fuochi nascosti sotto cenere dolosa. Quindi, prima di esporti per caso o per colpa a qualche flagello di tante malattie, affrettati a diventare accetto e caro al medico, onde al momento del bisogno abbia a trovar pronto il rimedio della salute. Altro è quando tu preghi solo per te; e altro quando una moltitudine trepida per te presso Dio.

Pontius Meropius Anicius Paulinus was born of a most illustrious family of Roman citizens at Bordeaux, in Aquitaine, in the year of restored salvation 353, and was of keen intelligence and graceful manners. With Ausonius as his master, he was honourably distinguished for eloquence and poetry. Being of the higher nobility, and very wealthy, he began a career of honours in the flower of his youth, and attained senatorial dignity. Then he went to Italy as consul, where he obtained the province of Campánia and fixed his residence at Nola. here he was struck, as by a ray of the divine light, by the heavenly miracles which were making illustrious the tomb of Felix, Priest and Martyr, and began to adhere more earnestly to the true faith of Christ, which he had long been revolving in his mind. And so he resigned the consular fasces and axe, never defiled by blood, and returned to Gaul, and after suffering various hardships and many toils both by land and by sea he received an injury to the eye; but being restored to health by the blessed Martin, Bishop of Tours, he was washed in the lustral waters of baptism by the blessed Delphinus, Bishop of Bordeaux.

While he was devoutly assisting at Mass in Barcelona on the feast of the Lord's Nativity, he was suddenly seized by force by an admiring crowd, and in spite of his reluctance, ordained priest by the Bishop Lampidius. Then he returned to Italy, and at Nola, where he had been drawn by devotion to St. Felix, he built a monastery near his tomb, and entered upon the monastic life with some companions. This man, already notable for his senatorial and consular dignity, embraced the folly of the cross to the admiration of almost the whole world, and, clothed in a mean garment, in vigils and in fastings, remained for days and nights fixed in constant contemplation of heavenly things. But, as the fame of his sanctity spread, he was elevated to the see of Nola, and entering upon that pastoral office, he gave a wonderful example of piety, wisdom, and above all, of charity.

Meanwhile he had produced writings full of wisdom, treating of religion and faith, and often also as a recreation, he had celebrated the deeds of the Saints in numerous elegant poems, attaining the highest fame as a Christian poet. All the men living at that time who were pre-eminent for holiness and learning, he attached to himself with the bonds of friendship and admiration. Very many flocked to him from all parts of the country, as if to a master of Christian perfection. When Campánia was laid waste by the Goths, he devoted all his resources to feeding the poor, and ransoming captives, without even leaving for himself the necessities of life. And after that, when the Vandals invaded the same region, a widow begged him to ransom her son who had been captured by the enemy; and as he had spent all his resources in works of piety, he sold himself into slavery in the young man's place, and was taken in chains to Africa. At length he was set at liberty, not without the evident assistance of God, and, returning to Nola, the good shepherd once more saw his beloved flock. There, in a most peaceful end, he fell asleep in the Lord in the seventy-eighth year of his age. His body was buried near the tomb of St. Felix, and later, in the time of the Lombards, was translated to Benevento and, under the Emperor Otto III, to Rome, where it was laid in the basilica of St. Bartholomew on an island in the Tiber. But Pope Pius X ordered the sacred relics of Paulinus to be restored to Nola, and he raised his feast to the rite of a double for the universal Church.

The Lord who is omnipotent, dearly beloved, might have made all men equally rich, so that no one need ask anything from another. In his infinite goodness, however, the merciful and gracious Lord hath planned otherwise, in order to prove your disposition in these matters. He hath made misery, that he might discern mercy; he hath made the needy, that he might make use of the rich. For your brother's poverty is your material of riches, if ye do not understand concerning the needy and the poor, and do not consider as your own what wealth ye have received. For God hath bestowed upon you your brother's portion in this world, in order that ye should offer of your own willing affection something of his gifts to those in need, and that he may enrich you in your turn with that portion in eternity. For now Christ receiveth through them, and hereafter he will repay for them.

Vigilia della Natività di san Giovanni Battista.
A Roma san Giovanni Prete, il quale, sotto Giuliano l'Apòstata, sulla via Salaria antica, fu decollato dinanzi alla statua del Sole. Il suo corpo dal beato Concòrdio Prete fu sepolto vicino al luogo detto Concilio dei Martiri.
Così pure a Roma sant'Agrippina, Vergine e Martire, la quale compì il martirio sotto l'Imperatore Valeriàno. Il suo corpo trasportato in Sicilia e sepolto a Minèo, rifulge per molti miracoli.
A Sutri, in Toscàna, san Felice Prete, la cui bocca da Tùrcio Prefetto fu fatta percuotere con una pietra finché Felice non rese lo spirito.
A Nicomèdia la commemorazione di moltissimi santi Martiri, i quali, al tempo di Diocleziano, nascosti sui monti e nelle spelonche, per il nome di Cristo subirono con lieto animo il martirio.

O Dio, che a chi lascia tutto per te in questo mondo, hai promesso il centuplo e la vita eterna nel futuro: concedi benigno, che, seguendo le orme del santo Vescovo Paolino, riusciamo a disprezzare le cose terrene, e a desiderare soltanto le celesti;
Tu che sei Dio, e vivi e regni con Dio Padre in unità con lo Spirito Santo, per tutti i secoli dei secoli.

Conclusione

℣. Benediciamo il Signore.
