In áliis Sanctis et eléctis Dei nóvimus illum diem coli, quo illos, post consummatiónem labórum et devíctum triumphatúmque mundum, in perpétuas æternitátes præsens hæc vita partúriit. In áliis consummáta últimi diéi mérita celebrántur: in hoc étiam prima dies, et ipsa étiam hóminis inítia consecrántur; pro hac absque dúbio causa, quia per hunc Dóminus advéntum suum, ne súbito hómines insperátum non agnóscerent, vóluit esse testátum. Sermone di sant'Agostino Vescovo
Sermone 20 sui Santi
Dopo il giorno sacrosanto del natale del Signore, non leggiamo celebrarsi la nascita di alcun uomo, se non soltanto del beato Giovanni Battista. Sappiamo che per gli altri Santi ed eletti di Dio si solennizza il giorno in cui, compiuto il lavoro e vinto e trionfato del mondo, furono come generati da questa vita presente alla gloriosa eternità. Per gli altri dunque si celebra l'ultimo giorno che ha colmato i loro meriti; per questo invece anche il primo giorno, anzi l'inizio ancora della sua vita; senza dubbio per questo motivo, che il Signore volle manifestare per mezzo di lui la sua venuta, perché se fosse venuto improvviso ed inatteso, gli uomini non lo avrebbero riconosciuto. Or Giovanni fu figura dell'antico Testamento, l'immagine della legge; e perciò Giovanni preannunziò il Salvatore, come la legge servì di messaggera alla grazia.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

L'aver poi profetato prima ancora di nascere, fin dal seno della madre, e l'aver reso testimonianza alla verità prima ancora di veder la luce, indica che, personificando egli lo spirito nascosto sotto il velo e nel corpo della lettera, manifestò al mondo il Redentore e annunziò a noi, quasi dal seno della legge, nostro Signore. E siccome i Giudei avendo errato fin dal seno della madre, cioè della legge da cui doveva venire il Cristo, «hanno traviato fin dal nascere, han detto falsità» Sal 57,4; perciò «venne questo per far da testimonio, per render testimonianza alla luce» Gv 1,7.

Lettura 6
Giovanni poi in prigione e inviante i suoi discepoli a Cristo, è la legge che passa al Vangelo. A somiglianza di Giovanni, questa legge chiusa nella prigione dell'ignoranza, giaceva come nel fondo di un oscuro recesso, dove la cecità dei Giudei lasciava il senso spirituale avvolto nell'oscurità della lettera. Questo vuol indicare l'Evangelista, dicendo; «Egli era lampada luminosa », cioè, acceso del fuoco dello Spirito Santo, per mostrare al mondo ravvolto nella notte della ignoranza la luce della salvezza, e, attraverso le tenebre densissime del peccato, scoprire, alla chiarezza dei suoi raggi, il sole di giustizia in tutto il suo splendore, allorché, parlando di se .stesso, dice : « Io sono la voce di colui che grida nel deserto ».

Libro 2 Comm. al Cap. 1 di Luca prima della fine
Elisabetta ebbe un figlio, e i vicini se ne congratularono. La nascita dei Santi produce una gioia comune essendo un bene comune; poiché la giustizia interessa a comunità. E perciò questo giusto fin dalla nascita presagisce la sua futura santità, e l'allegrezza dei vicini significa che la sua virtù sarà poi causa di esultanza. Giustamente poi è registrato il tempo in che il Profeta fu nel seno materno, affinché non fosse taciuta la presenza di Maria; ma se ne tace il tempo dell'infanzia, perché egli non conobbe le difficoltà di questa età. Per questo nel Vangelo non leggiamo altro di lui, che l'annunzio e il fatto della sua nascita, l'esultanza nel seno materno, e la voce nel deserto.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Difatti egli non conobbe alcuna età dell'infanzia, perché, sollevandosi sulle leggi della natura e dell'età, cominciò dal seno materno ad avere la misura dell'età perfetta di Cristo. Il santo Evangelista credete assai bene premettere che moltissimi volevano chiamare il fanciullo col nome del padre Zaccaria; per avvertirti che la madre respinse questo nome non perché le dispiacque, quasi fosse d'una persona degenere, ma perché conosceva, per rivelazione dello Spirito Santo, il nome che l'Angelo aveva già indicato a Zaccaria. Ed essendo questi muto, non poteva indicare il nome del figlio alla moglie; Elisabetta però seppe per ispirazione quel che non aveva appreso dal marito.

Giovanni, dice, è il suo nome; cioè, non spetta a noi d'imporre il nome a chi l'ha imposto già Dio stesso. Egli ha già il suo nome, che ci fu rivelato, e non l'abbiamo scelto noi. I Santi hanno questo privilegio, di ricevere il nome da Dio. Così Giacobbe fu chiamato Israele, perché aveva visto Dio. Così nostro Signore stesso fu nominato Gesù prima ancora di nascere, nome impostogli dal Padre e non dall'Angelo. Or vedi, gli Angeli non parlano da se stessi, ma trasmettono ciò che è stato detto loro. Né stupirti se la moglie pronunziò con tanta sicurezza un nome che non aveva inteso; perché lo Spirito Santo aveva comandato all'Angelo di suggerirglielo.

From the Sermons of St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo.
20th on the Saints.
Outside the most holy Birthday of the Lord, we find celebrated in the Gospel the birth of only one other, namely, that of the blessed Baptist, John. As regardeth all others among God's holy and chosen ones we know that that day is observed whereon, with their work finished, and the world conquered and finally trampled down, they were born from this into a better life, even one of everlasting blessedness. In others is honoured the crowning of the struggle on their last day of dying life, but in John is honoured the first day; in him the very beginning is found hallowed. And the reason of this is, without doubt, because he was sent from God to bear witness to the coming of the Light, lest when It came It might take the darkness by surprise, and the darkness might not comprehend It. Now, John was a figure of the Old Testament, and showed in his own person a typical embodiment of the Law; and therefore John heralded beforehand the coming of the Saviour, even as the Law was our schoolmaster to bring us to the grace of Christ. Gal. iii. 24.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

℟. The Angel of the Lord was sent down unto Zacharias, saying: Thou shalt beget a son in thine old age;

But as touching this, that he prophesied while yet in the hidden depths of his mother's womb, and while himself lightless bore testimony to the truth, we are to understand it as a figure how that while himself wrapped round with the veil and carnal ordinances of the letter, he by the spirit preached unto the world a Redeemer, and testified that Jesus is our Lord even while for himself, working under the law, the birth of the new dispensation was still in the womb of the future, and not come to day. The Jews were estranged from the womb, that is from the Law, that womb heavy with the Christ That was to be; they went astray from the belly, speaking lies, Ps. lvii. 4; and therefore John came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. John i. 7.

But of him was it said, as is written in the Blessed Evangelist He was a burning and a shining light that is to say, that, when the whole world was wrapt in the night of ignorance, this Saint was kindled by the fire of the Holy Ghost, to show before men the light of salvation, and at the hour of the thickest darkness of sin, appeared like a bright morning star to herald the rising of that Sun so right gloriously radiant, the Son of righteousness, Christ our Lord. And this is why John said of himself: I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord. John i. 15.

Elizabeth's full time came that she should be delivered, and she brought forth a son. And her neighbours rejoiced with her. The birth of a Saint is a joy for many, for it is a good to all. Righteousness is an help to all, and therefore when a righteous man is born it is an heralding of his life, which is still to come, that the helpful excellency of his future should be hailed by the, as it were, prophetic joy of the neighbours. It is well that we should be told concerning the prophet, while he was yet in the womb, that we may know how that Mary was there; but we hear nothing of his childhood, because, we know that it was safe and strong through the nearness of the Lord, Himself then in that womb which was free from the sorrows of pregnancy. And therefore we read in the Gospel nothing touching him save his coming, the annunciation thereof to his father, the leap which he gave in the womb, and his crying in the wilderness.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. The Fore-runner of the Lord cometh, to whom He Himself bare witness, saying:
* Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist.

It was not for him to feel childishness, who beyond all use of nature or of his age, when as yet he lay in his mother's womb, leapt at once unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. Eph. iv. 13. It is strange how that the Holy Evangelist hath judged meet to tell us that they thought to call the child Zacharias, after the name of his father, that thou mayest notice that the mother would have none of the names whereby their kindred were called, but only that name which the Holy Ghost had dictated, and which the Angel had told before unto Zacharias. The dumb man had certainly not been able to tell his wife by what name to call the child, and Elizabeth must needs have learnt by revelation what she could not have heard from her husband.

℟. The Angel Gabriel appeared unto Zacharias, and said thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John;

His name is John; that is, it is not for us to choose a name now for him to whom God hath given a name already. He hath a name, which we know, but it is not one of our choosing. Thus was it that our Lord Jesus was named before He was born, with a name not given by an Angel, but by the Father. Thou seest that Angels tell that which they have been bidden to tell, not matters of their own choosing. Nor oughtest thou to wonder that Elizabeth named a name which she had not heard, since it had been revealed to her by the same Holy Ghost Who had commanded the Angel to tell it.

Ad Alessandria san Gallicàno Martire, uomo Consolare, il quale, decorato di varie insegne trionfali, era caro a Costantino Augusto. Convertito alla fede di Cristo dai santi Giovanni e Pàolo si ritirò con sant'Ilarino ad Ostia, dove si dedicò interamente all'ospitalità e al servizio degli infermi. Della qual cosa divulgatasi la fama in tutto il mondo, molti da ogni parte recandosi colà vedevano un uomo già Patrizio e Console lavare i piedi dei poveri, apparecchiare la mensa, lavar loro le mani, servire con sollecitudine gli infermi e prestare ogni altro ufficio di pietà. Sotto Giuliano l'Apòstata, scacciato di là, andò in Alessandria, dove, costretto dal Giudice Rauciàno a sacrificare e ciò disprezzando, fu percosso colla spada, e così divenne Martire di Cristo.
A Sibàpoli, nella Mesopotàmia, santa Febrònia, Vergine e Martire, la quale, nella persecuzione di Diocleziano, sotto il Giudice Silèno, per conservare la fede e la pudicizia, prima battuta con verghe e tormentata nell'eculeo, quindi lacerata con pettini e bruciata col fuoco, finalmente, dopo esserle stati cavati i denti e tagliate le mammelle e i piedi, condannata a morte, adora di tanti gioielli di tormenti se ne andò allo Sposo.

Martyrology {anticipated}
June 25th 2026, the 10th day of the Moon,

On the 25th day of June, were born into the better life:

In the country of Golet, near Nusco, the holy Confessor William, father of the hermits of Monte Vergine.
At Bercea, holy Sosipater, disciple of the blessed Apostle Paul.
At Rome, the holy Virgin and martyr Lucy, with twenty-two others.
At Alexandria, the holy martyr Gallican. This was a man of Consular rank, who had received the honour of a triumph and was a personal friend of the Emperor Constantine. He was converted to the faith of Christ by holy John and Paul. After his conversion he withdrew to Ostia with holy Hilarinus, when he gave himself entirely to the service of strangers and the sick. This got noised abroad in all the world so that people came from all parts to see a man who had been a patrician and a consul washing the feet of the poor, laying the table, pouring water on the guests' hands, ministering carefully to the sick, and performing other offices of mercy. He was turned out of Ostia under the Emperor Julian the Apostate, and went to Alexandria. There the judge Raucian would needs have him sacrifice, and forasmuch as he would not, caused him to be beheaded, and so he became Christ's martyr.
At Sibapolis, in Syria, the holy Virgin and martyr Febronia on account of her steadfastness in faith and chastity during the persecution under Diocletian, the judge Lysimachus ordered her to be first beaten with rods and tormented upon the rack, then torn with combs and burnt with fire afterwards her teeth were hammered out and her breasts cut off, and then she was beheaded, and so passed away to her Divine Bridegroom prepared with all these sufferings as a bride adorned for her husband.
At Besançon, in Gaul, the holy martyr Antidius, Bishop of Besançon, who for Christ's faith's sake was slain by the Vandals.
At Reggio, holy Prosper of Aquitaine, Bishop of that city, famous for his learning and godliness, who stoutly contended for the Catholic faith against the Pelagians.
At Turin, the holy Confessor Maximus, Bishop of Turin, very famous for his teaching and holiness.
In Holland, the holy Confessor Adelbert, the disciple of holy Willibrord, Archbishop [of Utrecht.]

118:81 (Caph) L'anima mia venne meno per la brama della tua salvezza: * ma io sperai fermamente nella tua parola.
118:82 I miei occhi vennero meno per la brama della tua parola, * dicendo: Quando mi consolerai?
118:83 Poiché io sono divenuto come un otre esposto alla brina: * ma non ho dimenticato le tue ordinazioni.
118:84 Quanti sono i giorni del tuo servo? * Quando farai tu giustizia di quelli che mi perseguitano?
118:85 Gli iniqui mi raccontarono delle favole: * ma non sono come la tua legge.
118:86 Tutti tuoi comandamenti sono verità: * iniquamente mi hanno perseguitato, aiutami tu.
118:87 Per poco non mi hanno annientato sulla terra: * ma lo non ho abbandonato tuoi comandamenti.

118:97 (Mem) Quanto amai la tua legge, o Signore? * essa è tutto il giorno la mia meditazione.
118:98 Col tuo comandamento m'hai fatto più saggio dei miei nemici: * perché in eterno esso mi è presente.
118:99 Ebbi più intelligenza di quelli che mi istruivano: * perché le tue testimonianze sono la mia meditazione.
118:100 Ebbi più intelligenza degli anziani: * perché cercai i tuoi comandamenti.
118:101 Trattenni i miei passi da ogni cattiva strada: * per osservare le tue parole.
118:102 Non deviai dai tuoi giudizi: * perché tu mi hai data una legge.
118:103 Quanto sono dolci al mio palato le tue parole! * più che non è il miele alla mia bocca.
118:104 Dai tuoi comandamenti ebbi intelligenza: * per questo ho in odio qualunque via di iniquità.

118:106 Giurai, e determinai * di osservare i giudizi di tua giustizia.
