Guglielmo, nato da nobili genitori a Vercelli in Piemonte, aveva compito appena quattordici anni allorquando, acceso dall'ardore d'una ammirabile pietà intraprese il pellegrinaggio di Compostella, al celebre santuario di san Giacomo. Compì questo viaggio vestito d'una sola tonaca, cinto di doppio cerchio di ferro, a piedi nudi, soffrendo i fortissimi incomodi del freddo e del caldo, della fame e della sete, con grandissimo pericolo della vita. Ritornato in Italia, medita un nuovo pellegrinaggio al santo sepolcro del Signore; ma, vari e gravissimi ostacoli si opposero a questo progetto, rivolgendo la divina Provvidenza a disegni più alti e perfetti la religiosa tendenza del giovane. Pertanto passò due anni sul monte Solicchio pregando continuamente , vegliando, dormendo sul duro e digiunando, e, sostenuto dall'aiuto divino, restituì la vista ad un cieco. Sparsasi la fama di questo miracolo, Guglielmo non poteva più rimanere occulto; perciò pensa di nuovo di andare a Gerusalemme, e tutto contento si mette in viaggio.

Ma Dio, che voleva da lui una vita più utile e proficua sia all'Italia che alle altre nazioni, gli apparve e lo fece rinunziare alla sua risoluzione. Allora con meravigliosa rapidità edifica sulla vetta del monte Virgiliano, detto poi Verginiano, un monastero nonostante la località aspra ed inaccessibile. Quindi raduna dei compagni laici e religiosi, e li forma a un genere di vita perfettamente conforme ai precetti e ai consigli evangelici sia con delle leggi determinate tratte in gran parte da quelle istituite da san Benedetto, sia colla parola e gli esempi della sua vita santissima.

Quindi edificati altri monasteri, e la fama di Guglielmo crescendo ogni dì più, molte persone accorrono a lui d'ogni parte, allettate dall'ardore della santità e dalla fama dei miracoli. Infatti per sua intercessione i muti riebbero la parola, i sordi l'udito, gli inariditi il vigore, la sanità quanti erano afflitti dalle più diverse e incurabili malattie. Cambiò l'acqua in vino, e fece molti altri prodigi: tra i quali non deve tacersi come, essendogli stata mandata una donna a tentare la sua castità, si ravvoltolò, illeso, in mezzo a dei carboni ardenti sparsi per terra. Della qual cosa fatto consapevole Ruggero, re di Napoli, concepì una profonda venerazione per l'uomo di Dio. Infine, dopo aver egli predetto al re e ad altri il momento della sua morte, illustre per innumerevoli virtù e miracoli si addormentò nel Signore, nell'anno della salute 1142.

Ci saranno due ordine di eletti nel giudizio: uno di giudicanti col Signore, dei quali questo passaggio parla, che abbandonarono ogni cosa, e Lo hanno seguito: l'altro di quelli che verranno giudicati dal Signore, che non non abbandonarono proprio tutte le loro cose in pari modo, ma tuttavia di quelle che avevano, si preoccupavano di dare elemosine ai poveri di Cristo: quindi anche essi saranno uditori nel giudizio: «Venite, benedetti dal Padre mio, prendete possesso del regno preparato a voi fin dalla fondazione del mondo: perché ebbi fame, e mi deste da mangiare: ebbi sete, e mi deste da bere.»
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

This William was born of noble parents at Vercelli in Lombardy. He was but little over fourteen years of age, when, impelled by a strange earnestness for holiness, he undertook a pilgrimage to Compostella, to the far-famed Church of St. James. This journey he made clad in a single garment, wearing an iron girdle wound two-fold round his body, and with bare feet. He accomplished his object under the severest hardships of cold and heat, hunger and thirst, and at the great danger of his life. After his return to Italy, he undertook a new pilgrimage, this time to the Holy Sepulchre of the Lord. But in the way of fulfilling this, there arose diverse and most grievous obstacles, whereby the hand of God drew the lad to the higher and holier life of a monk. He dwelt in the town of Monte Solicolo for two years, which he passed in constant prayer, watching, sleeping upon the ground, and fasting. At the end of this time, the power of God made him the mean to restore a blind man to sight. The fame of this miracle became so noised abroad, that William could no longer remain unknown. His thoughts turned again towards Jerusalem, and he again entered cheerfully on the journey.

Thither he called around him, as his comrades, devout men, and schooled them into a way of life most closely following the commands and counsels of the Gospel, in great part by a rule taken from the constitutions of Blessed Benedict, and supplemented by his own words, and the example of his own holy life.

He turned water into wine, and openly worked many other miracles. Among all these things it must be told that a wretched woman sought him to lure him to impurity, but he raked hot embers out upon the floor and cast himself down upon them, and wallowed among them, and escaped unhurt. When this thing came to the knowledge of Roger I., King of Naples, it roused in him the highest reverence for the man of God. At the last, after foretelling his own death to the King and to others, and full of good works and miracles, he fell asleep in the Lord, in the year of salvation 1142.

In the judgment to come, the elect will be in two classes. One class are they who have forsaken all, and followed the Lord: and these shall judge along with Him. The other class are they who have not equally forsaken all that they had, but who have been careful daily to give alms of their goods to the poor of Christ: these shall be the subjects of judgment, and these are they who shall then hear these words: “Come, ye blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was an hungered, and ye gave Me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave Me drink.” Matth. xxv. 34, 35.
