Giovanni e Paolo, fratelli. Romani, nutrivano i poveri di Cristo coi beni lasciati loro da Costanza figlia di Costantino, che avevano piamente e fedelmente servito, quando, invitati da Giuliano Apostata a far parte dei suoi famigliari, si rifiutarono coraggiosamente di dimorare presso chi aveva abbandonato Gesù Cristo. Egli diede loro dieci giorni per deliberare, facendo intendere ad essi che se, passato quel termine, si rifiutavano di unirsi a lui e di sacrificare a Giove, certo sarebbero stati fatti morire.

Essi nel frattempo distribuirono ai poveri il resto dei loro beni per poter andare più spediti al Signore, e per aumentare il numero di quelli che sarebbero a riceverli negli eterni tabernacoli. Il decimo giorno Terenziano, capo della guardia pretoriana, fu inviato ad essi con una effige di Giove perché l'adorassero, intimando loro d'ordine dell'imperatore, che, se non volevano morire, rendessero onore a Giove. Essi, che pregavano, risposero, così com'erano, che veneravano col cuore e colla bocca il Cristo sì come Dio, e che erano pronti a morir per la sua fede.

Ma Terenziano temendo un'agitazione nel popolo se li avesse uccisi pubblicamente, li fece decapitare lì stesso dov'erano, in casa, il 26 Giugno, e poi seppellire segretamente; e sparse la notizia, che Giovanni e Paolo erano stati mandati in esilio. Ma la loro morte fu divulgata dagli spiriti impuri, che vessavano i corpi di molti; tra i quali il figlio di Terenziano posseduto anch'esso dal demonio, e che portato al sepolcro dei Martiri venne liberato. A questo miracolo credè in Cristo e lui e suo padre Terenziano; da cui dicesi anche scritta la vita di questi santi Martiri.

A questo lievito si riferisce il comando dell'Apostolo : « Orsù, celebriamo la festa non col lievito vecchio, né col lievito della malizia e della malvagità, ma cogli azzimi di purezza e di fedeltà » . Poiché come un po' di lievito, mescolato con una quantità di farina, agisce sulla massa intera, e comunica subito il suo sapore a tutta la pasta; così pure l'ipocrisia una volta impossessatasi d'un'anima. non ci lascerà più nessuna vera e sincera virtù. Eccone dunque il senso: Guardatevi dall'imitare gl'ipocriti; poiché verrà certo un tempo in cui sarà svelata a tutti e la vostra virtù e la loro ipocrisia.

Ma quel che segue: « Poiché le cose che avete detto all'oscuro saranno dette alla luce », può benissimo intendersi non solo del futuro, quanto tutti i segreti dei cuori saranno svelati alla luce, ma ancora del tempo presente. Infatti quanto a ciò che gli Apostoli hanno detto o sofferto nelle tenebre delle tribolazioni e nell'oscurità delle carceri, ora che la Chiesa è in onore per tutto il mondo, si proclama in pubblico colla lettura dei loro atti: « Non lasciatevi spaventare da quelli che uccidono il corpo ». Se i persecutori dei Santi, uccisi i loro corpi, non possono più far nulla contro di loro; stoltamente dunque essi infuriano contro le esanime membra dei Martiri gettandole a dilania re alle fiere e agli uccelli, ché giammai potranno impedire all'onnipotenza di Dio di vivificarle di nuovo, risuscitandole.

Vi sono poi due sorta di persecutori : gli uni che incrudeliscono pubblicamente, gli altri che blandiscono furbescamente per ingannare. Il Salvatore volendoci armare e munire contro gli uni e gli altri, più sopra ci raccomanda di guardarci dall'ipocrisia dei farisei, e qui di non temere le stragi dei carnefici, essendo che dopo morte non può durare né la crudeltà di questi, né la simulazione di quelli. «Cinque passeri non si vendono forse due soldi ?» Se Dio, egli dice, non può dimenticare i più piccoli animali e gli uccelli che svolazzano liberamente per l'aria; voi, che siete stati fatti ad immagine del Creatore, non dovete lasciarvi spaventare da quelli che uccidono il corpo ; perché quegli che governa gli animali irragionevoli, non cessa di aver cura dei ragionevoli.

John and Paul were two Roman brethren, the godly and trustworthy servants of Constantia, daughter of Constantine. At her death they spent in feeding Christ's poor the property which she left them. Julian the Apostate asked them to enter his household, but they bravely answered that they would not be servants to one who had run away from the service of Jesus Christ. Julian gave them ten days to consider on their choice, whether, at the end of that time, they would cleave to him, and sacrifice to Jupiter, or most surely die.

This interval they spent in distributing to poor creatures all that remained of their goods, that they might be quite free to depart hence to the Lord, and so succoured many by whom they have long since been received into everlasting habitations. He explained to them the command of the Emperor, that they should worship the said image or die. They were engaged in prayer, but answered him that for their loyalty to Christ, Whom their understanding acknowledged and their mouths confessed to be God, they felt no hesitation in choosing to suffer death.

Reading 6
Terentian, to avoid the uproar, which might have been caused by their public execution, caused their heads to be cut off at home where they then were. They lifted up their last earthly testimony upon the 26th day of June, in the year of our Lord 362. They were privately buried, and a story set about that they had been sent into exile. The fact of their death was made generally known by the unclean spirits by whom the bodies of many were tormented, and among others that of Terentian's own son, who was possessed with a devil, and delivered by being brought to the grave of the Martyrs. By this miracle he was led to believe in Christ, and so likewise was his father Terentian, who is said to have been the writer of the life of these blessed Martyrs.

For even as a little leaven doth infect the whole lump wherein it is put, and the savour thereof doth spread all abroad therein, so doth hypocrisy, when once it hath tainted the soul, drive out from it all sincerity and truth. The meaning, therefore, of this passage is this Beware, lest ye be as the hypocrites, for yet a little while, and all men shall see that ye are good, and they are evil.

Nella Galàzia san Crescènte, discepolo del beato Pàolo Apostolo. Passando per la Frància, colla parola della predicazione convertì molti alla fede di Cristo; ritornato poi presso il popolo a cui particolarmente era stato assegnato come Vescovo, finalmente, sotto Traiàno, avendo fino al termine della sua vita confermato gli stessi Gàlati nel servizio del Signore, compì il martirio.
A Cordova, nella Spagna, i santi Martiri Zòilo ed altri diciannove.
A Cesarèa, nella Palestina, sant'Anétto Martire, il quale, nella persecuzione di Diocleziàno, sotto il Preside Urbàno, avendo esortato altri al martirio e abbattuto gli idoli colla sua orazione, fu fatto percuotere da dieci soldati; e alla fine, tagliategli le mani ed i piedi, fu decapitato, e così ricevette la corona del martirio.
