Sermone di san Basilio Magno
Omelia 2 sul Salmo 28
«La voce del Signore sulle acque» Sal 28,3. Quale voce? su quali acque? Prendiamo queste parole come una profezia. Ricordati di Giovanni, che interrogato dai Giudei: «Tu chi sei? che risposta dobbiamo dare a chi ci ha mandati?» Gv 1,22 rispose: «Io sono la voce di colui che grida nel deserto ». La voce del Signore dunque è Giovanni, l'Angelo inviato da Dio «a precedere il Signore, per preparare al Signore un popolo ben disposto» Lc 1,17. E le acque sulle quali risuonava questa voce erano quelle del Giordano, dove egli battezzava predicando il battesimo di penitenza; e non solo nel Giordano, ma ancora a Ennon presso Salim, essendoci là molte acque.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Un Angelo del Signore discese a Zaccaria e gli disse : Tu avrai un figlio, benché vecchio :
* Ed avrà nome Giovanni Battista.

Quindi la voce del Signore sulle acque, è Giovanni che chiama al battesimo. Là ancora «tuonò il Dio della maestà» Sal 28,3; perché venne una voce dal cielo che disse: «Questo è il mio Figlio diletto in cui mi sono compiaciuto» Mt 3,17. Allora anche il Signore si degnò discendere nelle acque profonde per ricevere il battesimo di Giovanni, volendo compiere tutta la giustizia contenuta nella legge. «La voce del Signore è potente» Sal 28,4. Perché essa guarisce le infermità del popolo mediante il battesimo di penitenza, essa che battezza nell'acqua per mezzo di quello per far abbracciare la penitenza. Potente è questa voce quando dice: «Fate penitenza, perché il regno dei cieli , è vicino»; e «Fate frutti degni di penitenza» Mt 3,2-8.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Questi è il precursore prediletto, e la lampada luminosa davanti al Signore :

«La voce del Signore spezza i cedri» Sal 28,5. Si può dire che, preparando al Signore un popolo ben disposto, spezzando e triturando l'orgoglio dell'empietà che si rivolta contro la scienza divina, Giovanni raddrizzava ciò ch'era storto. Poiché chi abbassa ogni colle e ogni monte, spezzava ancora (colla voce di Giovanni) i cedri e appianava la via al Signore, inducendo a penitenza cuori alteri, freddi e orgogliosi. Quindi il Signore prendendo possesso del terreno preparatogli da Giovanni, spezzava colla sua venuta le potenze contrarie, chiamate figuratamente cedri del Libano. Difatti è necessario che il Signore regni, finché abbia posto sotto i suoi piedi i nemici, e abbia spezzato questi cedri.

℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Con cenni domandavano a suo padre, come voleva che fosse chiamato : ed egli, chiesta una tavoletta, scrisse così :

Libro 2 sul cap. 1 di Luca, in fine
«E Zaccaria, suo padre, fu ripieno di Spirito Santo, e profetò» Lc. 1,67. Guarda come Dio è buono, e facile a perdonare i peccati; non solo rende ciò che ha tolto, ma dona ancora ciò che non si sperava. Zaccaria, muto da tempo, profetizza; questo è somma grazia, che un uomo incredulo alle promesse di Dio gli renda testimonianza. Nessuno perciò diffidi, nessuno, nonostante il ricordo delle colpe passate, disperi delle celesti ricompense. Il Signore saprà ben revocare la sentenza, se tu saprai riparare l'offesa.

Bellamente, profetizzando intorno al Signore, egli indirizza le sue parole al bambino-profeta; per mostrare anche questo essere un beneficio del Signore; affinché, restringendosi a pubblicare ciò che gli è personale, non sembrasse coprire d'ingrato silenzio ciò che riconosceva nel figlio. Ma forse alcuni stimeranno eccesso d'uno spirito esaltato interpellare un bambino di otto giorni. Però, se riflettiamo, comprenderemo di certo come un bambino, il quale prima ancora di nascere intese il saluto di Maria, poteva, nato, intendere la voce del padre.

Thou rememberest how that this is the record of John, when the Jews (sent Priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou And he confessed and denied not, but confessed, I am not the Christ. And they asked him, What then Art thou Elias And he saith, I am not. Art thou that Prophet? And he answered, No. Then said they unto him, Who art thou that we may give an answer to them that sent us. ~(What sayest thou of thyself?) He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness. John i. 19-23; Isa. xl. 3, 4. Therefore, John is the voice of the Lord. This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send My messenger before thy face Luke vii. 27 to make ready a people prepared for the Lord i. 17. The voice of the Lord breaketh the cedars. This may well be said of him who, being sent as a messenger before the face of the Lord, to make ready for Him a prepared people, made the crooked places straight, by breaking down and treading flat the haughty growths of ungodliness that had lifted themselves up to block out the acknowledgment of God. He by whom every valley was exalted, and every mountain and hill was made low, the same was he who broke the cedars, and made straight in the desert an highway for our God, by laying low in repentance the hearts that were haughty, and proud, and lifted up. The Lord availing Himself of that preparation, smote down at His coming every power that withstood Him, which are spoken of under a similitude as the cedars of Lebanon. For the Lord must reign till He hath put all enemies under His feet, i Cor. xv. 25, and trodden down these cedars.

To the threefold denial there is now appended a threefold confession, that his tongue may not yield a feebler service to love than to fear, and imminent death may not appear to have elicited more from his lips than present life. Let it be the office of love to feed the Lord's flock, if it was the signal of fear to deny the Shepherd. Those who have this purpose in feeding the flock of Christ, that they may have them as their own, and not as Christ's, are convicted of loving themselves, and not Christ, from the desire either of boasting, or wielding power, or acquiring gain, and not from the love of obeying, serving and pleasing God.

Vigilia dei santi Apostoli Piétro e Pàolo.
A Liòne, in Frància, sant'Irenèo, Vescovo e Martire, il quale (come scrive san Girolamo) fu discepolo del beato Policàrpo, Vescovo di Smirne, e vicino ai tempi Apostolici. Egli, avendo moltissimo combattuto colla parola e cogli scritti contro gli eretici, finalmente, nella persecuzione di Sevèro, con quasi tutto il popolo della sua città, fu coronato con glorioso martirio.

At Lyon, in Gaul, the holy martyr Irenaeus, Bishop [of that city.] He was, as holy Jerome writeth, a disciple of the blessed Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna, and hardly removed from the times of the Apostles. He strove much against heretics both by word and by writing, and was crowned with a glorious martyrdom, along with nearly all the [faithful] people of his city, in the persecution under Severus.
In Alexandria, in the same persecution under Severus, the holy martyrs Plutarch, Serenus, Heraclides, (who was still under preparation for baptism,) Heron, (a recent convert,) another Serenus, Rhais, (who also was being prepared for baptism,) Potamiena, and her mother Marcella. Of these the most famous is the Virgin Potamiena. She first endured extraordinary contendings for her virginity, and then suffered terrible and unheard-of torments for her faith, and at the last was burnt, along with her mother.
On the same day, the holy martyr Papius, who, in the persecution under Diocletian, was scourged and put into a vessel filled with boiling oil and fat, and suffered other horrid torments, before he was crowned by being beheaded.
