Perché mai Geremia, vedendo che la sua predicazione incontrava difficoltà negli uditori, uscì in questa maledizione; «Maledetto l'uomo che ha annunziato e detto a mio padre: «Ti è nato un bambino»?

Ma perché Gelboe significa corso d'acqua, e Saul, cui l'unzione non impedì di morire, essendo figura del nostro Mediatore nella sua morte; non malamente i monti di Gelboe rappresentano quei Giudei dai cuori superbi, che, abbandonandosi a una marea di cupidigie terrene, si mescolarono nella morte di Cristo, l'unto per eccellenza: e perché il re, l'unto vero, perdette la vita del corpo in mezzo ad essi, perciò, privati d'ogni rugiada di grazia, essi sono nella sterilità.

Di essi è detto con ragione che non potranno più essere campi di primizie. In fatti le anime superbe degli Ebrei non danno più frutti nuovi: perché, alla venuta del Redentore, rimasero nella massima parte nell'infedeltà, e non vollero seguire i primi insegnamenti della fede. E mentre la santa Chiesa s'è mostrata fin dai primordi precocemente feconda per la moltitudine dei Gentili generati, appena è se, negli ultimi tempi, ella raccoglierà alcuni Giudei che potrà trovare ancora, raccogliendoli come una tardiva raccolta, e serbandoli come frutti di tardiva stagione.

La santità dei farisei consisteva nel non uccidere: la santità di quelli che. devono entrare nel regno dei cieli è di non adirarsi senza motivo. Minima cosa e pertanto non uccidere; e colui che avrà violato questo precetto sarà chiamato minimo nel regno dei cieli. Ma colui che lo avrà osservato così da non uccidere, non sarà perciò grande e degno del regno dei cieli; pur tuttavia è già salito d'un grado: e si perfezionerà, se non si adirerà senza motivo; e se si perfezionerà, sarà molto più lontano dall'omicidio. Perciò colui che c'insegna di non adirarci, non distrugge la legge proibendoci di non uccidere, anzi piuttosto la completa; cosicché conserviamo l'innocenza e all'esterno, non uccidendo, e nel fondo del cuore, non adirandoci.

Pertanto in questi peccati di collera ci sono dei gradi: nel primo uno si adira, ma trattenendo nel suo cuore l'emozione concepita. Se il turbamento che si prova strappa a chi è sdegnato una voce, non significante niente in se stessa ma attestante questa emozione d'animo colla stessa esclamazione che sfugge all'uomo irritato, (la colpa) è certo maggiore che se la collera nascente si fosse silenziosamente compressa. Se poi si fa sentire non solo un grido di sdegno, ma anche una parola indicante e manifestante il biasimo che s'infligge a chi è indirizzata, chi dubiterà ciò essere colpa più grave che manifestare, col solo suono della voce, il proprio malcontento?

Osserva ora tre gradi anche (nell'istruttoria della causa): giudizio, consiglio, fuoco della geenna. In sede di giudizio si da ancora luogo alla difesa. Nel giudizio invece, sebbene ci soglia essere anche il giudizio, tuttavia perché la distinzione stessa posta obbliga di riconoscere qui qualche diversità, ci sembra che al consiglio appartenga la promulgazione della sentenza; perché allora non si tratta più d'esaminare se il reo dev'essere condannato; ma i giudici deliberano fra loro sul supplizio da infliggere a chi merita certamente la condanna. Nel fuoco della geenna poi non c'è più dubbio quanto alla condanna, come nel giudizio, né (incertezza) quanto alla pena del condannato, come nel consiglio; perché nel fuoco dell'inferno, certa è la condanna, e (fissata) la pena del colpevole.

He had the mountains of Gilboa to do with the death of Saul, that they should be condemned to have dew fall on them no more, neither rain, but should wither away, barren of the green glory of the springtime? But this word Gilboa signified bubbling fountain, and the death of Saul the Anointed of God is a type of the death of our Anointed Mediator. Thus we find in the mountains of Gilboa no unfit image of the proud hearts of the Jews, which had their spring in earthly desires, and took part in the death of the Anointed Saviour. And since among them their Anointed Monarch met His death, the dew of grace is upon them no more.

But whosoever shall do it, and not kill, he is not therefore great, and meet for the kingdom of heaven; albeit, he hath risen a step; but he will have gotten farther, if he be not angry with his brother without a cause, which, if he do, he will be the farther off from manslaughter. Wherefore, He Which teacheth us that we are not to be angry without a cause, destroyeth not the law, Thou shalt not kill, but rather fulfilleth and increaseth it, making us not only to be free of the sin of outward killing, but also clean of anger within.

On sins of this kind there are diverse steps. First, there is the swelling feeling of anger. When this feeling appeareth in a man's heart, he keepeth it. And this is something more than anger kept covered under silence. Next, this audible outburst of indignation may contain direct and open reviling of him who hath roused it. And it cannot be doubted that this is something more than an empty cry of anger.

Behold here the three degrees of guilt open respectively to the judgment, to the council, and to hellfire. In the judgment, there is still place for defence. In the council, albeit this also is in a sense a judgment, yet we may suppose this distinction from the judgment proper, that the council pronounceth sentence, not as the result of a trial whereat the accused is present, but as the result of a consultation among the judges, to what punishment he is to be sentenced of whom it is already established that he is guilty. When we get to hell-fire, there remaineth no longer any doubt about condemnation, as in the judgment, and no longer any doubt about sentence, as in the council. In hellfire the condemnation and the pain of him that is condemned are alike certain.

A Roma il natale dei santi Apostoli Piétro e Pàolo, i quali patirono nello stesso anno e nello stesso giorno, sotto Nerone Imperatore. Il primo di questi, nella medesima Città, crocifisso col capo rivolto verso la terra, e sepolto nel Vaticàno presso la via Trionfale, è celebrato con venerazione di tutto il mondo; l'altro decapitato e sepolto sulla via Ostiènse, è venerato con pari onore.
In Cipro santa Maria, madre di Giovanni, soprannominato Marco.
Nel castello d'Argenton, in Frància, san Marcéllo Martire, il quale, per la fede di Cristo, fu decapitato insieme con Anastàsio, uomo militare.
A Génova il natale di san Siro Vescovo.
A Narni san Cassio, Vescovo di quella città, del quale racconta san Gregorio Papa, che non passava quasi alcun giorno della sua vita, nel quale non offrisse a Dio onnipotente ostie propiziatorie.
A questo conformava anche la sua vita, perchè, distribuendo in elemosine tutto quello che aveva, nel tempo del sacrificio si profondeva tutto in lacrime. Finalmente, nel giorno natalizio degli Apostoli, in cui ogni anno era solito recarsi a Roma, nella stessa città di Nami, dopo aver celebrato la Messa e dato a tutti il corpo del Signore e la pace, passò a Dio.

June 29th 2026, the 14th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Rome, the holy Apostles Peter and Paul. They suffered under the Emperor Nero upon the same day of the same year. Peter was crucified in the city with his head downwards, and is buried at the Vatican beside the Triumphal Way, surrounded by the veneration of the whole world. Paul was beheaded with the sword, and buried beside the Ostian Way, surrounded by the same honour.
At Argenten, in Gaul, [in the third century,] the holy martyr Marcellus, who was beheaded for Christ's faith's sake, along with a soldier named Anastasius.

At Narni, holy Cassius, Bishop of that city of him holy Gregory hath on record that hardly any day of his life passed wherein he did not offer up unto God Almighty the offerings of atonement and therewith his life accorded well, for he gave away in charity all that he possessed, and at the hour of the sacrifice he wept abundantly.
