Verúmtamen hodiérna festívitas, præter illam reveréntiam quam toto terrárum orbe proméruit, speciáli et própria nostræ Urbis exsultatióne veneránda est; ut, ubi præcipuórum Apostolórum glorificátus est éxitus, ibi in die martýrii eórum sit lætítiæ principátus. Sermone 1 sul natale degli Apostoli Pietro e Paolo
Senza dubbio, dilettissimi, il mondo intero prende parte a tutte le nostre sante solennità, e la pietà d'una stessa fede, esige che si celebri in ogni luogo con gioia comune ciò che si commemora compiuto per la salvezza di tutti. Tuttavia la festa odierna, oltre la venerazione che s'è acquistata per tutto il mondo, deve avere nella nostra Città un culto speciale ed un'allegrezza particolare; così che là dove i principi degli Apostoli morirono sì gloriosamente, ci sia ancora, il giorno del loro martirio, maggiore esplosione di gioia. Perché son dessi, o Roma, gli eroi che fecero risplendere ai tuoi occhi il Vangelo di Cristo; e che da maestra dell'errore; ti resero discepola della verità.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Signore, se sei tu, comandami di venire a te sulle acque.

D'altra parte conveniva assai meglio col piano dell'opera divina, che molti regni fossero riuniti sotto un medesimo impero, perché così la predicazione avesse facile accesso e pronta diffusione fra i popoli sottomessi alla autorità suprema d'una stessa città. Ma allorquando questa città, ignara dell'autore della sua elevazione, dominava su quasi tutte le nazioni, essa era schiava di tutti gli errori; e perché non ne rigettava alcuno, credeva di potersi attribuire molta religiosità. Quindi quanto più strettamente il diavolo la teneva incatenata, tanto più mirabilmente è stata da Cristo liberata.

Giustamente egli domanda: «La gente chi dice che sia il Figlio dell'uomo?» Matth. 16,13 quelli che non vedono in lui che il figlio dell'uomo, sono infatti degli uomini; ma quelli che riconoscono la sua divinità, son detti dii, e non uomini. «Ed essi risposero: Alcuni dicono ch'è Giovanni Battista, altri Elia» Matth. 16,14 Mi meraviglio che certi interpreti cerchino le cause di questi errori, e vogliano stabilire con discussioni lunghissime, perché alcuni hanno pensato nostro Signore Gesù Cristo essere Giovanni, altri Elia, altri Geremia o qualcuno dei profeti; avendo essi potuto sbagliare prendendolo per Elia e Geremia allo stesso modo che sbagliò Erode prendendolo per Giovanni quando disse: «Questi è quel Giovanni, a cui io tagliai la testa: egli è risorto dai morti, e perciò in lui si operano dei miracoli» Matth, 6, 15.

«E voi chi dite ch'io sia?» Matth. 6,15 Lettore intelligente, bada che e da quel che segue e dal testo del discorso gli Apostoli non sono punto chiamati uomini, ma dii. Perché, dopo aver detto: «La gente chi dice che sia il Figlio dell'uomo?» soggiunge: «E voi chi dite ch'io sia?» Matth. 16,13 Mentre gli altri, perché sono uomini, pensano di me cose affatto umane, voi che siete dii, chi credete ch'io sia? Pietro a nome di tutti gli Apostoli fa questa professione di fede: «Tu sei Cristo, il Figlio del Dio vivente» Matth. 16,16. Dice, del Dio vivente, per distinguerlo dagli altri dèi, che passano per dèi, ma che sono morti.

Lettura 9
E Gesù rispondendogli disse: «Beato te, Simone, Figlio di Giona» Matth. 16,17. Egli ripagò la testimonianza resagli dall'Apostolo. Pietro aveva detto: «Tu sei Cristo, il Figlio del Dio vivente»; la confessione della verità è ricompensata: «Beato te, Simone, figlio di Giona». Perché? «Perché non te l'ha rivelato né la natura né l'istinto, ma te l'ha rivelato il Padre» (Ibi). Ciò che non ha potuto rivelare né la natura né l'istinto, l'ha rivelato la grazia dello Spirito Santo. In seguito dunque alla professione di fede, egli riceve un nome in cui si trova espressa la rivelazione dello Spirito Santo, del quale merita anche d'essere detto figlio. Difatti Bar-Jona nella nostra lingua è lo stesso che Figlio della colomba.

Dearly beloved brethren, in the joy of all the holy Feast-days the whole world is partaker. There is but one love of God, and whatsoever is solemnly called to memory, if it hath been done for the salvation of all, must needs be worth the honour of a joyful memorial at the hands of all. Nevertheless, this feast which we are keeping today, besides that world-wide worship which it doth of right get throughout all the earth, doth deserve from this city of ours an outburst of gladness altogether special and our own. In this place it was that the two chiefest of the Apostles did so right gloriously finish their race. And upon this day whereon they lifted up that their last testimony, let it be in this place that the memory thereof receiveth the chiefest of jubilant celebrations. O Rome, these twain are the men who brought the light of the Gospel of Christ to shine upon thee! These are they by whom thou, from being the teacher of lies, wast turned into a learner of the truth.

Who do men say that I, the Son of man, am? This question is well put, for they who speak of Him as the Son of man are men, while they that know of Him that He is God are called not men but gods. And they said: Some say that Thou art John the Baptist, some, Elias. I marvel that some commentators have thought it worth their while to search into the origin of each of these blunders, and to engage in a discussion of weary length as to why some thought that our Lord Jesus Christ was John the Baptist, some, Elias and others, Jeremias, or one of the Prophets. Their blunders concerning Elias and Jeremias were but of a piece with Herod's concerning John the Baptist: It is John, whom I beheaded; he is risen from the dead and therefore mighty works do show forth themselves in him. Mark vi. 16, 14.

A Roma santa Lucina, discepola degli Apostoli, la quale, provvedendo colle sue sostanze alle necessità dei Santi, visitava i Cristiani chiusi in carcere, e attendeva a seppellire i Martiri, presso i quali anch'essa, in una cripta da lei fabbricata, fu sepolta.
