Dal libro di sant'Agostino Vescovo sulla grazia e il libero arbitrio
Cap. 6.
Vediamo che cosa dica l'Apostolo Paolo, che abbiamo visto ricevere certamente senza alcun merito, anzi con molti demeriti, la grazia di Dio che rende bene per male, poco prima della sua passione, scrivendo a Timoteo: «Io, dice, sono già alla vigilia d'essere immolato, e l'ora della mia dissoluzione s'approssima. Ho combattuto la buona battaglia, ho terminato la corsa, ho conservato la fede» 2Tim. 4,6. Egli ricorda prima questi, che certo sono meriti suoi, per venire subito alla corona che spera d'ottenere in ricompensa dei suoi meriti, egli che, nonostante i suoi demeriti, ottenne la grazia. Inoltre badate a ciò che soggiunge: «Mi resta, dice, la corona di giustizia che il Signore, giusto giudice, mi darà in quel giorno» 2Tim. 4,8. A chi darebbe la corona il giusto giudice, se il Padre misericordioso non avesse dato la sua grazia? E come questa sarebbe una corona di giustizia, se non l'avesse preceduta la grazia che giustifica il peccatore? Come sarebbe essa una ricompensa dovuta, se prima non gli fosse stata data la grazia gratuitamente?
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Perciò consideriamo nell'Apostolo Paolo i suoi stessi meriti, ai quali dice che il giusto giudice darà la corona, e vediamo se questi meriti gli appartengano come proprii, cioè, se li ha acquistati da sé, ovvero se sono un dono di Dio. «Ho combattuto, dice, la buona battaglia, ho terminato la corsa, ho conservato la fede». Innanzi tutto queste opere buone sarebbero nulle, se non le avessero precedute dei buoni pensieri. Osservate pertanto ciò che dice di questi stessi pensieri: «Non che noi siamo capaci di pensare alcunché da noi, come da noi; ma la nostra capacità viene da Dio» Cor. 3,5 Ora esaminiamo ogni cosa partitamente.

Poiché sebbene io possa agire diversamente, e non permettere che soffriate niente di grave, e che siate esposti ai lupi come pecore, ma anzi possa rendervi più terribili dei leoni; tuttavia è bene che sia così: ciò e vi renderà più illustri, e manifesterà la mia potenza. Ed in questo senso poi disse a Paolo: «Ti basta la mia grazia, perché la mia potenza si fa sentire meglio nella debolezza» 2Cor. 12,9. Sono dunque io stesso che vi ho resi tali.

Ma vediamo quale prudenza egli esiga: quella del serpente. Perché la fede è la testa e la radice (del cristiano); se la conservi, ancorché perda tutto il resto, ricupererai però il tutto con maggior gloria. Quindi egli non comandò d'essere soltanto semplici, o soltanto prudenti, ma ha legato insieme queste due cose, volendo che se ne facesse una virtù perfetta.

Che se vuoi vedere dagli stessi fatti come siasi ciò compiuto, apri il libro degli Atti degli Apostoli; vi vedrai certo come, insorgendo spesso il popolo Giudaico contro gli Apostoli e digrignando i denti, questi, imitando la semplicità della colomba e rispondendo colla dovuta modestia, ne disarmarono la collera, placarono il furore, arrestarono l'impeto. Infatti, allorché dicevano: «Non v'abbiamo noi proibito rigorosamente d'insegnare in quel nome?» Act. 5,28 sebbene potessero fare innumerevoli miracoli, pure né dissero né fecero nulla che denotasse asprezza; ma risposero con estrema dolcezza, dicendo: «Se sia giusto d'ubbedire piuttosto a voi che a Dio, giudicatelo» Act. 4,19. Hai visto la semplicità della colomba, guarda ora la prudenza del serpente: «Noi certo, dicono, non possiamo non parlare di quel che abbiamo visto e udito» Act. 4,20.

The Apostle Paul was a man, who, when we first hear of him, had not only no merits, but a great many demerits. That man received the grace of God, Who returneth good for evil, and let us see in what sort of language, when the hour of his last sufferings was at hand, he wrote to Timothy. He saith: I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. 2 Tim. iii. 6. Here he counteth his merits, whereon a crown was immediately to follow, just as grace had followed immediately on his demerits. Listen to what cometh next Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me at that day. Unto whom would the Lord give a crown as a righteous Judge, if He had not first given grace, as a merciful Father And how would that crown be a crown of righteousness, if there had not first come grace which justifieth the ungodly How could a reward have been earned unless the power to earn had first been given unearned?

Let us now consider what were the merits of the Apostle Paul, which entitled him to look for a crown of righteousness from the Lord, the righteous Judge, and let us see whether these merits sprang from himself or were God's gifts to him. He saith I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. To begin with, these good works would have been nothing worth, unless they had come from good thoughts. Listen therefore to what this same Paul saith concerning good thoughts. He writeth to the Corinthians: Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think anything, as of ourselves but our sufficiency
is of God. 2 Cor. iii. 5. Now let us take point by point.
