Vis sánguinis Christi audíre virtútem? Redeámus ad ejus exémplum, et priórem typum recordémur, et prístinam Scriptúram narrémus. In Ægýpto, nocte média, Ægýptiis Deus plagam décimam minabátur, ut eórum primogénita deperírent, quia primogénitum ejus pópulum detinébant. Sed, ne amáta plebs Judæórum una cum illis periclitarétur, quia unus locus continébat univérsos, remédium discretiónis invéntum est. Proínde exémplum mirábile, ut discas in veritáte virtútem. Ira divínæ indignatiónis operabátur, et domos síngulas mórtifer circuíbat. Quid ígitur Móyses? Occídite, inquit, agnum annículum, et sánguine ejus liníte jánuas. Quid ais, Móyses? Omelia ai Neofiti
Volete conoscere la virtù del sangue di Cristo? Risaliamo a ciò che l'ha figurato, e ricordiamo il suo primo simbolo, e narriamo il passo dell'antica Scrittura. Nell'Egitto, Dio minacciava gli Egiziani d'una decima piaga, di far perire a mezzanotte i loro primogeniti, perché trattenevano il suo popolo primogenito. Ma, affinché l'amato popolo Giudaico non perisse insieme con quelli, abitando tutti uno stesso paese, egli trovò un mezzo di riconoscimento. Esempio meraviglioso fatto apposta per farti conoscere la virtù del sangue di Cristo. Gli effetti . della collera divina erano attesi e il messaggero di morte andava di casa in casa. Che fa allora Mosè? Uccidete, dice, un agnello d'un anno, e col suo sangue tingete le porte. Che dici, Mosè? Il sangue di un agnello può dunque preservare l'uomo ragionevole? Certo, egli risponde; non perché è sangue, ma perché esso è figura del sangue del Signore.

Poiché come le statue dei re, pur inerti e mute, proteggono d'ordinario gli uomini dotati d'anima e di ragione i quali si rifugiano presso di esse, non perché sono di bronzo ma perché sono l'immagine del principe; così quel sangue, privo di ragione, liberò gli uomini aventi un'anima, non perché era sangue, ma perché annunziava la venuta di questo sangue. E allora l'Angelo devastatore vedendo gli stipiti e le porte tinte, passò oltre e non osò entrare. Se dunque ora il nemico invece delle porte tinte d'un sangue figurativo, vedrà le labbra dei fedeli, porte dei templi di Cristo, arrossate del suo vero sangue, molto più esso se ne allontanerà. Perché se l'Angelo si ritirò davanti alla figura, quanto più sarà atterrito il nemico nel vedere la stessa realtà? Vuoi conoscere ancora un'altra virtù di questo sangue? Sì. Guarda donde prima s'è sparso e da qual fonte è uscito. Esso è uscito prima dalla croce medesima; il costato del Signore ne fu la sorgente. Difatti morto Gesù, è detto, e ancora sospeso alla croce, si avvicina un soldato, ne percuote il lato colla lancia e ne esce acqua e sangue; l'una simbolo del battesimo, l'altro del sacramento. E perciò non disse: Uscì sangue e acqua; ma uscì prima l'acqua e poi il sangue, perché prima siamo lavati nel battesimo, e poi consacrati dai santi misteri.

Così è avvenuto pure di quest'agnello: i Giudei uccisero l'agnello, ed io vi ho riconosciuto il frutto del sacramento. Dal costato uscì sangue ed acqua. Non voglio, uditore, farti passare sì rapidamente sui secreti di tanto mistero; mi resta ancora a dire una cosa mistica e profonda. Dissi quest'acqua e questo sangue esser simbolo del battesimo e dei sacri misteri. Infatti per essi fu fondata la Chiesa mediante la rigenerazione del bagno e la rinnovazione dello Spirito Santo. Per il battesimo, dico, e i sacri misteri, che sembrano usciti dal costato. Dal suo costato dunque Cristo ha edificato la Chiesa, come dal costato di Adamo fu tratta Eva, sua sposa. Ònd'è che (san) Paolo attesta dicendo: «Noi siamo membra del suo corpo e delle sue ossa» Eph. 5,30, alludendo a questo costato. Invero, come Dio fece uscire la donna-dal costato d'Adamo, così Cristo ci ha dato dal suo costato l'acqua e il sangue, destinati alla Chiesa come elementi riparatori.

Trattato 120 su Giovanni
L'Evangelista ha usato una parola studiata, perché non ha detto: Gli percosse il costato, o ferì, o altro di simile, ma: Aprì; per mostrarci che la porta della vita ci si apre in certo qual modo là donde sono sgorgati i sacramenti della Chiesa, senza i quali non si ha accesso alla vita, ch'è la sola vera vita. Quel sangue che fu versato, fu versato per la remissione dei peccati. Quell'acqua ci tempera la bevanda della; salvezza; ed essa è insieme bagno, purificatore e bevanda. Questo significava l'ordine dato a Noè di aprire una porta nel fianco dell'arca per farvi entrare gli animali che non dovevano perire nel diluvio e che rappresentavano la Chiesa. Perciò la prima donna fu tratta dal costato dell'uomo addormentato e fu chiamata la vita e la madre dei viventi. Perché simboleggiava un gran bene, prima che commettesse il gran male della prevaricazione. Questo secondo Adamo, chinato il capo, si addormentò sulla croce, affinché ne fosse formata la sua sposa che uscì dal costato di lui addormentato. O morte, per cui i morti rianno la vita! Che più puro di questo sangue? Che più salutare di questa ferita?
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Questi è colui ch'è venuto coll'acqua e col sangue, Gesù Cristo:
* E non coll'acqua solamente, ma coll'acqua e col sangue.

Gli uomini erano schiavi del diavolo, e servivano ai demoni; ma sono stati riscattati dalla schiavitù. Essi infatti poterono bensì vendersi, ma non poterono riscattarsi. Venne il Redentore, e sborsò il prezzo; sparse il suo sangue, e ricomprò il mondo. Chiedete che cosa ha comprato? Guardate quel che ha dato e vedrete quel che ha comprato. Il sangue di Cristo n'è il prezzo. Che vale esso mai? che cosa, se non tutto il mondo? che cosa, se non tutte le genti? Sono molto ingrati al suo prezzo, o sono molto superbi coloro che dicono ch'esso vale sì poco d'aver comprato soltanto gli Africani, o ch'essi sono tanto grandi che fu sborsato soltanto per essi. Non si millantino dunque, non s'insuperbiscano. Quello che ha dato, lo ha dato per tutti.

Omelia 3. sulla Nativ. di S. Giovanni Bapt.
Fratelli carissimi, la nascita naturale del venerando Giovanni Battista consacrò la festività del giorno presente: il quale infatti fu mandato in questo mondo per disposizione celeste, affinché non solo egli stesso fosse innalzato per la gloria profetica, ma affinché anche tutte profezie di tutti i profeti fossero confermate tramite lui. E non veneriamo immeritatamente ora con un onore speciale colui, che per una certa grazia speciale, perciò da ultimo profetò il Redentore del mondo, in modo da mostrarlo per primo. Questi infatti è l'unico dei profeti che meritò di vedere con i propri occhi ed annunziare presente nostro Signore Gesù Cristo, che gli altri prevederono sarebbe venuto nei tempi lontani.
Egli è quello che, ispirante Dio, Isaia presciente annunzia dicendo: Voce che grida nel deserto, preparate la via del Signore. Quanto a proposito, fratelli carissimi,il beato Giovanni è stato descritto come voce, che era mandato sia come araldo del Verbo celeste, sia come testimone. Questi è colui, di cui la nascita è annunciata tramite l'Angelo Gabriele, sia il nome, sia il merito. Egli è chi per giudizio di sentenza celeste è preposto a tutti i mortali, dicente il Signore: non sorse tra i nati di donne uno più grande di Giovanni Battista. Quanto è stato detto bellamente, tra i nati di donna non c'è più grande, poiché quello che nasceva dalla Vergine era in ogni modo più grande di Giovanni.
Avendo esaminato queste cose, fate attenzione, carissimi, a quanta reverenza gli dobbiamo prestare e quanto di devozione: che per essere onorabile, fu profetato dallo Spirito Santo, promesso dall'Angelo, lodato dal Signore, e consacrato per la gloria perpetua di una santa morte. Ed era appropriato infatti che la sua vita mirabile seguisse la nascita mistica, e la morte dedicata a Dio concludesse la vita santa e perfetta. Perciò, fratelli, assai giustamente oggi in tutto il mondo, la Chiesa di Cristo concelebra con una lietissima festività i primordi della nascita di colui che da testimone fedelissimo rivelò al mondo stupefatto che le gioie eterne erano arrivate per i mortali.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Wouldest thou hear the power of the Blood of Christ? Then let us look at the figure thereof, let us call to mind the old type, and tell the story written in the ancient Scriptures. The Egyptians would not let God take away Israel His firstborn, And Moses said: Thus saith the Lord: About midnight will I go out into the midst of Egypt, and all the first-born in the land of Egypt shall die, from the first-born of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne unto the first-born of the maid-servant that is behind the mill, and all the first-born of beasts. And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there was none like it, nor shall be like it any more. But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog move his tongue, against man or beast that ye may know how that the Lord hath put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel. Ex. xi. 4-7. Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said unto them: Draw out and take you a lamb according to your families and kill the Passover. And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop and dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and strike the lintel and the two side-posts with the blood. and when He seeth the blood upon the lintel and on the two side-posts, the Lord will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you. xii. 21-23. Reading 5
The statues of monarchs, mindless and speechless images though they be, have sometimes been an helpful refuge to men endowed with soul and reason, not because they are works of the brazier's skill, but because the likeness they bear is a King's. And just so did this unconscious blood deliver the lives of men, not because it was blood, but because it foreshadowed the shedding of the Blood of Jesus. On that night in Egypt, when the destroying Angel saw the blood upon the lintel and on the two side-posts, he passed over the door, and came not in unto the house. Even so now much more will the destroyer of souls flee away when he seeth, not the lintel and the two side-posts sprinkled with the blood of a lamb, but the mouth of the faithful Christian, the living dwelling of the Holy Ghost, shining with the blood of the True Messiah. If the Angel let the type be, how shall not the enemy quail before the Reality? Wouldest thou hear more of the power of that Blood I am willing. Consider from what source it welleth, from what fountain it springeth. Its fountain is the Heart of the Lord, pierced for us upon the Cross. Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with Him but when they came to Jesus, and saw that He was dead already, they brake not His Legs, but one of the soldiers with a spear pierced His Side, and forthwith came thereout Blood and Water, John xix, 32-34, whereof One is a figure of Baptism, and the other of the Sacrament of the Altar. One of the soldiers with a spear pierced His Side and the veil of the Temple of His Body was rent in twain. John ii. 19-21, Matth. xxvii. 51. O how glorious is the treasure that is laid open to me therein! How noble the riches that it is my joy there to have found!

I would not, O my hearer, that thou shouldest pass by the depths of such a mystery as this without pausing; for I have yet a mystic and mysterious discourse to deliver. I have said that the Water and Blood shewed forth symbolically baptism and the sacraments. For from these, holy Church was founded by the laver of regeneration, and the renovation of the Holy Ghost. Through baptism, I say, and through the sacraments, which seem to have issued from his Side. It was therefore out of the Side of Christ that the Church was created, just as it was out of the side of Adam that Eve was raised up to be his bride. This is the reason why Paul saith, no doubt in allusion to his Side: We are members of his Body, and of his bones. For even as God made the woman Eve out of the rib which he had taken out of the side of Adam, so hath Christ made the Church out of the Blood and Water which he made to flow for us out of his own Side. -On the occasion of the nineteenth centenary of the accomplishment of the redemption of mankind, as a fitting celebration of this ineffable blessing, Pope Pius XI decreed an extraordinary Jubilee. During that year the Supreme Pontiff, wishing that the fruits of the Precious Blood of Christ, the Lamb without spot, might redound more abundantly upon mankind and that the minds of the faithful be impressed with more vivid recollections of this same Blood as the price of their redemption, elevated the Feast of the Most Precious Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ to the rank of a double of the first class, to be celebrated as such every year by the universal Church.

One of the soldiers with a spear pierced His Side, and forthwith came thereout Blood and Water. The Evangelist speaketh carefully. He saith not that he smote the Side, nor yet that he wounded It, nor yet anything else, but pierced It, to fling wide the entrance unto life, whence flow the Sacraments of the Church, those Sacraments without which there is no entrance unto the life which is life indeed. That Blood which was shed there was shed for the remission of sins, that Water is the water that mantleth in the cup of salvation. Therein are we washed, and thereof do we drink. Of this was it a type when it was said unto Noah: The door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof and of every living thing of all flesh shalt thou bring into the ark to keep them alive. Gen. vi. 16, 19. A figure this of the Church. Thus was it that the first woman was made from the side of her husband while he slept, and she was called (Eve, which is, being interpreted,) Life, because she was the mother of all living. Gen. iii. 20. This name set forth a great good, before it became associated with the bitter fruit of a great evil. And here we have the Second Adam bowing His Head, and the deep sleep of death falling upon Him upon the Cross, and He sleepeth, that the Lord God may take a thing out of His side, and may make thereof a wife for Him. O what a death was His, which quickeneth the dead! What is cleaner than His Blood? What more health-giving than His wounding?

Christ's Blood was the price. What is His Blood worth? What, but the whole world? What, but all men? They are very unthankful for His redemption, or very proud, who say that It is only precious enough to buy the Africans, or that they themselves are so precious that It was shed only for them. Let there be an end to such conceit, an end to such vainglory. What He paid, He paid for all.

That Blood was his own, and thereby he redeemed us. Yea, it was to this end that he took Flesh and Blood, namely that he might shed his Blood in order to redeem us. If thou wilt accept it, the Blood of thy Lord was given for thee. If thou wilt not accept it, it was not given for thee. For perchance thou sayest: My God had Blood, with which he redeemed me, but now since he hath suffered, he hath given it all; what hath remained to him, that he may also give any of it for me? This is a great thing, because he gave once, and he gave for all. The Blood of Christ is salvation to him that doth accept it, punishment to him that doth not accept it. Why therefore dost thou hesitate to be set free from the second death, thou who dost not wish to die? By this thou art set free, if thou art willing to take up thy Cross, and follow the Lord; for he took up his Cross and sought his servant.

Ebr 9:11-12
Fratelli: Cristo venuto qual Pontefice dei beni futuri, col passar per un tabernacolo più grande e più perfetto, non costruito da mano d'uomo, cioè non appartenente a questa creazione; e non col sangue di capri o di tori, ma col proprio sangue entrò una sola volta per sempre nel Santo dei santi, dopo aver acquistato una redenzione eterna.

At Rome also, the three holy soldiers who turned to Christ at the martyrdom of the blessed Apostle Paul, and thus earned a share with him in the glory of heaven.
On the same day, the holy martyrs Ariston, Crescentian, Eutychian, Urban, Vitalis, Justus, Felicissimus, Felix, Marcia, and Symphorosa, who were all crowned with martyrdom in the Campania while the persecution was raging under the Emperor Diocletian.
At Winchester, in England, the holy Swithin, Bishop of that city, [in the year 863,] whose holiness shone forth in the grace of working miracles, and whose feast day we keep upon the 15th day of this present month of July. [His head was taken to the cathedral of Évreux at the end of the fourteenth century.]
