Venuto che fu a noi il Redentore della nostra razza, andò subito dal suo amico Giovanni, mentre si trovava ancora nel seno di sua madre. E Giovanni dal seno materno vedendolo nel seno (di Maria), scuotendo il naturale involucro esclama: Vedo il Signore che ha fissato i limiti della natura, e io non aspetto il tempo della nascita. Il tempo di nove mesi non m'è qui necessario; perché in me è colui ch'è eterno. Uscirò da questa oscura dimora, e divulgherò la cognizione sommaria di cose meravigliose. Sono un segno: significherò la venuta di Cristo. Sono una tromba: annunzierò il mistero dell'incarnazione del Figlio di Dio. Darò fiato alla tromba; e con ciò stesso sarò di benedizione alla lingua di mio padre, e la scioglierò a parlare, Darò fiato alla tromba, e vivificherò il seno di mia madre.

Ciò, dice, è per un gran mistero che si opera, ed è un atto che sorpassa ogni intelligenza umana. Giustamente io innovo la natura a cagione di colui ch'è per innovare ciò ch'è sopra la natura. Vedo, sebbene sia ancora nel seno materno; perché mi fa vedere il sole di giustizia ch'è nel seno (della Vergine). Intendo colle orecchie, perché nasco per esser la voce del Verbo per eccellenza. Esclamo, perché considero il Figlio unigenito del Padre rivestito di carne. Sussulto, perché vedo il Creatore dell'universo assumere la natura umana. Balzo, perché vedo che il Redentore del mondo ha preso un corpo. Sono il precursore della sua venuta, e gli vado in certo qual modo innanzi per annunziarlo.

Omelia di sant'Ambrogio Vescovo
Libro 2 Comm. al c. 1 di Luca, dopo il principio
È da rilevare come il superiore vada dall'inferiore per essergli di aiuto: Maria ad Elisabetta, Cristo a Giovanni. Fu anche per santificare il battesimo di Giovanni, che il Signore andrà poi al battesimo. Inoltre non tardano punto a manifestarsi i benefizi dell'arrivo di Maria e della presenza divina. Nota bene la significazione propria di ciascuna parola. Elisabetta sentì prima la voce, ma Giovanni sentì primo la grazia. Quella udì secondo l'ordine della natura, questi sussultò per ragione del mistero. Quella sentì l'arrivo di Maria, questi del Signore. Esse s'intrattengono sulla grazia, essi la producono dentro di loro, primo misterioso ufficio di pietà figliale che si annunzia nel bene procurato alle loro madri; e con doppio miracolo le madri profetizzano sotto l'ispirazione dei propri figli. Sussultò il bambino, fu ripiena la madre. La madre però non fu ripiena prima del figlio; ma il figlio essendo ripieno dello Spirito Santo, ne riempì anche la madre.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Beata mi chiameranno tutte le generazioni,
* Perché grandi cose ha fatto in me il Signore ch'è potente, e di cui santo è il nome.

«E come mai m'è dato che la Madre del mio Signore venga da me?» Luc. 1,48. Cioè: Come mai questo gran bene per me, di avere la Madre del mio Signore da me? M'accorgo del miracolo, mi spiego il mistero: la Madre del Signore ha in seno il Verbo, è piena di Dio. «Maria poi si trattenne con lei circa tre mesi, e poi tornò a casa sua» Luc. 1,56. Ben a ragione ci si presenta santa Maria prestare l'opera sua per la durata d'un numero mistico. Giacché ella non si trattenne solo per godere della intimità di Elisabetta, ma anche per il profitto di un tanto profeta. Infatti se al suo primo entrare il profitto fu sì grande, che al saluto di Maria il bambino esultò nel seno e la madre del bambino fu ripiena di Spirito Santo; quanto pensiamo non vi aggiunse la presenza di Maria in sì lungo tratto di tempo? Così il Precursore riceveva l'unzione, e quasi valoroso atleta si esercitava nel seno materno; così ancora, in vista del duro combattimento, si preparava la sua forza.

℟. Sei invero felice, o santa Vergine Maria, e degnissima d'ogni lode:

Commemorazione: Ss. Martiri Processo e Martiniano.
Nel tempo che Pietro e Paolo erano detenuti nel carcere Mamertino sul monte Tarpeio, i due carcerieri, Processo e Martiniano, con altri quaranta, mossi dalla predicazione e dai miracoli degli Apostoli, si convertirono alla fede di Gesù Cristo; e, scaturita d'un tratto una sorgente dallo scoglio, furono battezzati. Allora essi permisero agli Apostoli di andarsene, se volevano. Ma Paolino comandante dei soldati, scoperta la cosa, cercò di rimuovere Processo e Martiniano dalla presa risoluzione. Ma vedendo che perdeva tempo inutilmente, fece loro pestare la faccia e spezzare i denti con un sasso. Condotti poi davanti alla statua di Giove, e rifiutandosi colla stessa costanza di adorare gli idoli, li fece torturare sul cavalletto, applicare delle lamine roventi sui loro corpi e battere con bastoni; e in tali tormenti non si udiva da loro che questa sola voce: Sia benedetto il nome del Signore. Finalmente gettati in prigione, poco dopo vennero decapitati fuori di Roma sulla via Aurelia. Lucina ne seppellì i corpi in un suo podere il 2 Luglio; essi poi furono trasferiti in Città, e sepolti nella basilica del Principe degli Apostoli.

There is no need for me to linger here till nine months are ended, for He That is Eternal is with me! I will break out of my dark cell; I will proclaim my full knowledge of many wonders. I am the sign. I will show that the Christ is here. I am the trumpet; let me peal forth the news that the Son of God is come in the flesh. We must here consider that the greater cometh unto the lesser, Mary unto Elizabeth, Christ unto John. And again afterwards, to hallow the baptism of John, the Lord came unto him to be baptized. It was soon that the blessings of the coming of Mary and of the Presence of God were made manifest. Have regard here to the distinction made, and to the special weight of every word. Elizabeth was the first to hear the voice of Mary's salutation, but John was the first to receive grace. She heard naturally, but he leaped mystically. She hailed the coming of Mary, he that of the Lord, Mary and Elizabeth spake words full of grace, but Jesus and John worked, and commenced their mystery of godliness from their mothers' beginnings, and so by twin miracles the mothers prophesied from the spirit of their unborn offspring. The babe leaped, and the mother was filled with the Holy Ghost. The mother was not filled before the son, but when the son was filled with the Holy Ghost, he filled his mother also.

Commemoration of: Ss. Processus et Martinian, Martyrs
At what time Peter and Paul were kept in the Mamertine Prison, at the foot of the Tarpeian Rock, two of the gaolers, named Processus and Martinian, along with other forty, were moved by the preaching and miracles of the Apostles to believe in Christ, and were baptized in a spring which suddenly brake forth out of the rock. These men let the Apostles depart if they willed it. But Paulinus, Prefect of the soldiers, when he heard what was come to pass, strove to turn away Processus and Martinian from their purpose. And when he found that he but wasted time, he ordered their faces to be bruised and their teeth to be broken, with stones. Moreover, when he had had them led to the image of Jupiter, and they still boldly answered that they would not worship the gods, he caused them to be tormented on the rack, and white-hot plates of metal to be put to their flesh, and that they should be beaten with sticks. While they were suffering all these things they were heard to say only this one word Blessed be the Name of the Lord. They were afterwards cast into prison, and in a little while they were taken outside the city, and slain with the axe, upon the Aurelian Way. The Lady Lucina buried their bodies upon her own farm, upon the 2nd day of July, but they were afterwards brought into the City, and are buried in the Church of the Prince of the Apostles.

At Alexandria, the holy martyrs Tryphon and twelve others.
At Constantinople, the holy martyrs Eulogios and his Companions, [fourth century.]
At Caesarea, in Cappadocia, holy Hyacinth, a groom of the bed-chamber to the Emperor Trajan. He was accused of Christianity, variously tormented with stripes, and cast into prison, where he died of hunger.
At Chiusi, in Tuscany, the holy martyrs Irenaeus, a Deacon, and Mustiola, a matron, who under the Emperor Aurelian were tormented in diverse and terrible ways, and gained a crown of martyrdom.
Upon the same day, the holy martyrs Marcus and Mucian were slain with the sword for Christ's sake. A child called out to them not to sacrifice to idols, and for this reason was ordered to be whipped, and forasmuch as he continued to confess Christ all the more vehemently, he also was put to death, along with a certain Paul who also had exhorted the martyrs.
