Elisabetta nacque dai reali d'Aragona, nell'anno di Cristo 1271, e in presagio della sua futura santità i genitori, lasciato contro l'uso il nome della madre e della nonna, vollero che nel battesimo si chiamasse col nome della prozia materna, santa Elisabetta duchessa di Turingia. Appena nata, si vide subito quale mediatrice di pace sarebbe stata per i regni e per i re; perché l'allegrezza della sua nascita riconciliò il nonno con suo padre divisi da funeste discordie. Il padre poi, ammirando l'indole che la figlia mostrava col crescere, diceva che Elisabetta avrebbe superato di molto in virtù, essa sola, tutte le altre donne uscite dal sangue dei re di Aragona. E pieno di venerazione per la celeste vita di lei sprezzante degli abbigliamenti, rifuggente dai piaceri, tutta dedita ai digiuni, alle preghiere continue e alle opere di carità, non rifiniva d'attribuire ai soli meriti della figlia la prosperità dei suoi affari e del regno. La fama di lei sparsasi dovunque, ed ella richiesta da molti principi per sposa, finalmente fu accordata a Dionigi, re di Portogallo, e il matrimonio fu celebrato secondo il rito della santa Chiesa.

Nella vita coniugale, non metteva minor cura nel coltivar le virtù che nell'educare i figli, cercando di piacere al marito, ma più a Dio. Quasi metà dell'anno viveva soltanto di pane e acqua; la quale si cambiò miracolosa mente in vino un dì che, malata, aveva rifiutato di berne nonostante la prescrizione del medico. Una povera donna, a cui aveva baciata un'ulcere orribile, fu guarita all'istante. Un giorno d'inverno, volendo nascondere al re le monete che stava per dare ai poveri, le cambiò in rose. Rese la vista a una giovane cieca dalla nascita; guarì, col solo segno della croce, molti altri da gravissime malattie; e fece moltissimi miracoli di questo genere. Non solo costruì monasteri, ricoveri, chiese, ma e li dotò con munificenza. Fu ammirabile nello spegnere le discordie fra i re; infaticabile nel soccorrere le miserie pubbliche e private dell'umanità.

Modello di tutte le virtù in gioventù alle vergini, nel matrimonio alle spose, lo fu ancora alle vedove, nell'isolamento, dopo la morte del re Dionigi. Difatti preso tosto l'abito delle religiose di santa Chiara, assisté, intrepida, ai funerali del re, e poco dopo si recò a Compostela per offrire in suffragio dell'anima dello sposo molti doni in seta, argento, oro e pietre preziose. Ritornata a casa, convertì in pii e santi usi tutto quanto di caro e prezioso l'era rimasto; così tutta occupata nell'ultimare il monastero veramente regale che aveva fondato per vergini a Coimbra, nel nutrire i poveri, proteggere le vedove, difendere gli orfani, sollevare tutti i disgraziati, ella viveva non per sé, ma per Iddio e per il bene di tutti. Affin di riappacificare due re, il figlio e il genero, si recò nella celebre piazzaforte di Estremoz, dove cadde malata per le fatiche del viaggio, e, visitata dalla Vergine Madre di Dio, morì santamente il 4 Luglio dell'anno 1336. Dopo morte fu illustrata da molti miracoli, specialmente dal soavissimo odore del suo corpo rimasto incorrotto dopo quasi trecent'anni; così ella restò sempre celebre, col nome di: la santa regina. Finalmente nell'anno del giubileo, e della nostra salute 1525, in mezzo al concorso e col plauso di tutto l'orbe cristiano, Urbano VIII la iscrisse solennemente nel novero dei Santi.

Il regno dei cieli, fratelli carissimi, si dice simile a cose terrene, affinché l'anima si elevi da ciò che conosce a ciò che non conosce affatto, così che dall'esempio delle cose visibili si sollevi alle invisibili, e come incitata da ciò che ha appreso, s'infiammi a tal punto da imparare ad amare, per mezzo dell'affetto per un bene conosciuto, anche beni sconosciuti. Ecco dunque che il regno dei cieli si paragona ad un tesoro nascosto in un campo. L uomo che l'ha trovato, lo tiene nascosto e, per la gioia di possederlo, va a vendere tutto ciò che possiede e compra quel campo.

Ed in ciò si deve anche notare che il tesoro trovato viene nascosto perché sia conservato: poiché non riuscirà a difendere dagli spiriti maligni l'ardore del desiderio che sente per il cielo, colui che non lo sottrae alle umane lodi. Infatti nella vita presente ci troviamo come in una via, lungo la quale ci dirigiamo alla patria. Gli spiriti maligni ci tendono insidie lungo la strada, come ladruncoli. Portare dunque pubblicamente un tesoro per via è come desiderare di essere derubati. Ora io dico questo, non perché il prossimo non veda le nostre opere buone, poiché sta scritto: «Vedano le vostre opere buone e glorifichino il Padre vostro che è nei cieli»; ma perché non cerchiamo lodi dall'esterno per quello che facciamo. L'opera quindi sia pure pubblica, ma rimanga occulta l'intenzione; affinché noi possiamo dare al prossimo l'esempio di un'opera buona, e tuttavia con l'intenzione, per la quale cerchiamo di piacere soltanto a Dio, desideriamo sempre il segreto.

Elizabeth, daughter of Peter III., King of Aragon, was born in the year of Christ 1271, and it was an omen of her saintly life; that her father and mother, contrary to the usual custom, caused her to be baptized, not by the name of her mother or grandmother, but by that of her mother's aunt, the holy Lady Elizabeth of Thuringia. As soon as ever she was born, her destiny of being a peacemaker between kings and kingdoms began to appear, for the joy of her birth put an end to the ruinous quarrels of her father and grandfather. As she grew up, her father, delighted with her disposition, was used to foretell that his Elizabeth would in herself excel all the daughters of the kingly house of Aragon, and that the happiness of his own home and kingdom was all owing to this one damsel, whose heavenly life he venerated for her indifference to bodily finery, her abstinence from pleasures, her many fasts, her instancy in prayer to God, and her activity in doing works of charity. This illustrious maiden was sought in marriage by many princes, and at twelve years of age was wedded with Christian rites to Denis, King of Portugal.

As a wife, she gave herself up as much to the education of her children, as to her own improvement, striving in all ways, next to God, to please her husband. For nearly half the year, she was used to live on bread and water, and once, when she was ill, God changed the water into wine, which the physicians had ordered her to drink, but which she was unwilling to take. Once when she kissed a disgusting ulcer in a poor woman, it was immediately healed. One winter-time when she was giving some money to the poor, and was fain her husband should not see her alms, the coins changed into roses. She gave sight to a maiden who had been born blind, and healed many other persons of grievous sicknesses by the Sign of the Cross. The miracles of this kind, which she worked, were many. She not only built, but richly endowed convents, schools, and churches. She had a wonderful skill in making peace between kings, and toiled unweariedly to lighten all suffering, whether public or private.

King Denis died on the 6th day of January, 1325, and Elizabeth, who in her maidenhood had been a pattern to virgins, and in her married life to wives, now, in her loneliness, was an example to widows. Clad in the raiment of the nuns of St. Clare, she faithfully attended at the King's funeral, and soon after went to Compostella, where she offered many precious gifts, of silk, and gold, and silver, and precious stones, for the benefit of his soul. Thence she returned home, and spent in holy and godly uses everything that remained to her that was dear and costly, eager to relieve every kind of suffering. She lived, not for herself, but for God, and to be useful to mankind. She finished the convent for nuns, right worthy of a Queen, which she had founded at Coimbra. She fed the poor, defended widows, protected orphans. A war being lighted up between her son Alphonsus IV, King of Portugal, and her grandson Alphonsus V, King of Castile, she resolved to set out to reconcile them, and went to the famous city of Estremoz, upon the borders of the two kingdoms. On the journey, she caught a violent fever, of which, after a vision of the Virgin Mother of God, she died a saintly death on the 4th day of July, in the year 1336. She became illustrious for miracles after her death, especially for the sweetness of the savour of her body, which hath now remained uncorrupt for well-nigh three hundred years, and she hath always been spoken of as the Holy Queen Elizabeth. At length, in the year of our salvation 1625, which was that of the Jubilee, Urban VIII, all Christendom gathered together and approving, formally enrolled her name among those of the Saints.

Dearly beloved brethren, the kingdom of heaven is likened unto the things of earth, to the end that by the mean of things which we know, our mind may rise to the contemplation of the things which we know not by the example of things which are seen, may fix her gaze on things which are not seen by the touch of things which she useth, may be warmed towards the things which she useth not; by things which she knoweth and loveth, to love also the things which she knoweth not. For, behold, “the kingdom of heaven is likened unto treasure hid in a field, the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and, for joy thereof, goeth and selleth all that he hath and buyeth that field.”
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

℟. She openeth her mouth with wisdom, and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household

And herein we must remark that the treasure, when once it hath been found, is hidden to keep it safe. He whose intimate yearnings after God are not hidden from the praise of men, is open thereby to the attacks of evil spirits. In this life we are, as it were, journeying homewards on a road beset by evil spirits who are like highwaymen. He therefore inviteth robbery who carrieth his treasure ostentatiously. Doubtless our neighbour should be able to see our good works, as it is written: “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” But this is not to be understood to mean that we are to seek the praise of men by what we do. Rather, let us in such wise work in the open that the inner intention of devotion is not advertised. So we shall give an example to our neighbour, and yet keep hidden, except from the sight of God, our purpose of pleasing him.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. The kingdom of this world and all the beauty of life I have esteemed as nothing, for the excellency of the love of Jesus Christ my Lord

A Roma, alla Goccia sempre manante, il natale dei santi Martiri Zenóne ed altri diecimiladuecentotre.
A Gortina, in Càndia, san Cirillo Vescovo, il quale, nella persecuzione di Dècio, sotto il Preside Lucio, fu gettato alle fiamme, ed essendo rimasto illeso dal fuoco, che bruciò i legami soltanto, dal Giudice fu rimesso in libertà per lo stupore di così grande miracolo, ma per aver poi con insistenza e ardore predicato Cristo, dal medesimo fu preso di nuovo e decapitato.
Alla Brille, in Olànda, la passione dei diciannove Martiri, detti Gorgomièsi; tra i quali nove Sacerdoti e due Laici erano Frati Minori, quattro Preti secolari, due Premonstratensi, uno Canonico Regolare di sant'Agostino, ed uno Domenicano. Tutti questi, dopo aver sofferto dagli eretici Calvinisti vari ludibri e tormenti per aver difeso l'autorità della Chiesa Romana e la presenza reale di Cristo nell'Eucaristia, finalmente, sospesi ad una trave e strangolati, compirono il loro combattimento. Dal Sommo Pontefice Pio nono furono annoverati tra i santi Martiri.
Così pure nella città di Torà, presso il lago Velino, la passione dei santi Anatolia ed Audace, sotto l'Imperatore Décio. Di essi Anatolia, Vergine di Cristo, dopo aver curato per tutta la provincia del Picèno moltissimi, che erano travagliati da varie malattie, e convertiti a Cristo, per ordine del Giudice Faustiniàno, fu tormentata con diversi generi di pene, ed avendo attirato alla fede anche Audace per esser rimasta libera da un serpente lanciatole addosso, alla fine pregando a mani stese, fu trafitta dalla spada; Audace pure, messo in carcere, con sentenza capitale fu senza indugio coronato.
Ad Alessandria i santi Martiri Patermuzio, Copréte ed Alessandro, uccisi sotto Giuliano l'Apòstata.
A Màrtula, in Umbria, san Brizio Vescovo, che, sotto il Giudice Marciano, soffrì molto per la confessione del Signore; e finalmente, dopo aver convertito a Cristo una grande moltitudine di popolo, Confessore si riposò in pace.
A Città di Castèllo, in Umbria, santa Verònica Giuliani Vergine, nativa di Mercatéllo, terra della diocesi di Urbània, Monaca del Second'Ordine di san Francésco e Abbadessa del monastero di Città di Castèllo : illustre per l'intenso desiderio di patire, e per le altre virtù e grazie celesti, dal Papa Gregòrio decimosesto fu iscritta nel numero delle sante Vergini.

Holy Confessor Willibald, first Bishop of Eichstätt, in Saxony, who laboured in the Gospel along with holy Boniface, and turned many peoples to, Christ, [in the year 786,] of whom mention is made upon the 7th day of this present month of July.
July 9th 2026, the 24th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:
At Rome, at the Dropping Well, the holy martyrs Zeno and ten thousand two hundred and three others, [third century.]
At Gortyna, in Crete, the holy Cyril, Bishop [of that see.] In the persecution under Decius he was cast into the fire by order of the President Lucius, when his bonds were burnt but he escaped unburnt, and the judge was so confounded at such a marvel that, he would have let him go free, had he not there and then with lively faith proclaimed Christ, wherefore he caused him to be beheaded.
At Tora, on Lake Velino, in the persecution under the Emperor Decius, the holy martyrs Anatolia and Audax. Anatolia was a Virgin of Christ, she had healed many sick of diverse diseases throughout the whole province of Picenum, and turned them to Christ, when by command of the judge Faustinian she suffered diverse punishments. She was delivered from a serpent which was sent against her and converted Audax to the faith, and at last was run through with a sword as she stood praying with outspread hands. Audax also was thrown into prison, and forthwith received his crown by being beheaded.
At Alexandria, the holy martyrs Patermuth, Copres, and Alexander, who were slain under the Emperor Julian the Apostate.
At Brielle, in Holland, the nineteen holy martyrs who are called the Martyrs of Gorcum. They were subjected to diverse mockings and torments, and at last put to death, [in the year 1572,] by the Calvinist heretics, because they defended the authority of the Church of Rome and the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Their names were enrolled among those of the holy martyrs by the Supreme Pontiff Pius IX.
At Martula, in Umbria, the holy Confessor Brictius he suffered many things under Marcian the judge, for confessing the Lord, and when he had turned a great multitude of people to Christ he fell asleep in the Lord. [He was Bishop of Martula at the end of the sixth century.]
At Città di Castello, the holy Virgin Veronica de Quiliani, of the Order of Friars Minors Capuchins, Abbess of the Convent of Poor Clares at Citta di Castello. [She was born on December 27, 1660, at Mercatello, a little town in the Duchy of Urbino.] Famous for her wonderful love of suffering and other excellences and gifts of heavenly grace, [in the year 1727,] Pope Gregory XVI enrolled her name among those of the holy Virgins.
℣. And elsewhere many other holy martyrs, confessors, and holy virgins.
