Lettera Enciclica di Papa Leone XIII
Cirillo e Metodio, fratelli germani, nati d'illustre lignaggio a Salonicco, si recarono di buon ora a Costantinopoli per apprendere in quella capitale dell'Oriente le arti liberali. Entrambi vi fecero in breve il più grande profitto; ma soprattutto Cirillo, il quale s'acquistò nelle scienze tale riputazione, da essere chiamato a titolo di singolare onore, il Filosofo. Poi Metodio menò vita monastica. Cirillo invece venne in tale stima che l'imperatrice Teodora, dietro suggerimento del patriarca Ignazio, gli affidò la missione d'istruire nella fede cristiana i Cazari, che abitavano al di là del Chersoneso, e che egli, dopo che furono istruiti colla sua parola e tocchi dalla grazia di Dio, e distrutta ogni superstizione, congiunse a Gesù Cristo. Dato ottimo assetto a quella nuova Cristianità, Cirillo se ne tornò lieto a Costantinopoli, ed entrò anch'egli nel monastero di Policrone, dove già s'era ritirato Metodio. Frattanto la fama dei felici successi riportati al di là del Chersoneso essendo giunta a Rastilao, principe di Moravia, questi trattò coll'imperatore Michele III per avere da Costantinopoli alcuni operai evangelici. Cirillo pertanto e Metodio, destinati a questa missione e ricevuti in Moravia con grande gioia, si diedero a coltivare quelle anime nella dottrina cristiana con tanta energia e tanta industre operosità, che dopo non molto quella popolazione diede ben volentieri il nome a Gesù Cristo. A ciò giovò non poco la cognizione della lingua Slava, che Cirillo aveva prima acquistata, e valsero assai le sacre pagine dell'antico e nuovo Testamento ch'egli aveva tradotto nel natio linguaggio di quel popolo; Cirillo e Metodio infatti furono i primi a trovare i caratteri stessi onde è espressa la lingua Slava, e perciò sono ritenuti a buon diritto gli autori di questa lingua.

Lettura 5
La nuova di sì grandi azioni essendo giunta presto fino a Roma, il sommo Pontefice san Nicolò I fece venire a Roma i due ottimi fratelli. Ed essi, presa la via di Roma, vi portarono le reliquie di Papa san Clemente I, che Cirillo aveva ritrovato nel Chersoneso. A quest'annunzio Adriano II, ch'era succeduto a Nicolò morto da poco, andò loro incontro con gran pompa, accompagnato dal clero e dal popolo. Quindi Cirillo e Metodio fecero relazione al sommo Pontefice, in presenza del clero, del loro santo e laborioso apostolato. Ma essendo accusati da alcuni invidiosi d'aver usato la lingua Slava nella liturgia, essi si difesero con ragioni così decisive e chiare, che n'ebbero e lodi e approvazioni dal Papa e dal clero. Entrambi allora, dopo aver giurato di perseverare nella fede del beato Pietro e dei Romani Pontefici furono da Adriano consacrati vescovi. Ma la divina provvidenza disponeva, che Cirillo, più maturo per virtù che per l'età, terminasse il corso della sua vita a Roma. Dopo avergli fatti solenni funerali, il suo corpo fu depositato nella tomba stessa che Adriano aveva fatto costruire per sé; quindi fu trasferito nella basilica di san Clemente e posto accanto alle sue ceneri. E mentre veniva portato per la città tra il canto solenne dei Salmi, con una pompa che somigliava più a trionfo che a funerale, parve che il popolò Romano tributasse a quest'uomo santissimo le primizie degli onori celesti. Metodio invece ritornato in Moravia, e fattovisi di cuore il modello del gregge, s'applicò ogni giorno più con maggior zelo a servire gl'interessi cattolici. Che anzi confermò nella fede cristiana la Pannonia, la Bulgaria e la Dalmazia; e lavorò moltissimo per convertire al culto del solo vero Dio la Carinzia.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Ho posto il mio aiuto in un potente ed ho esaltalo uno scelto tra il mio popolo.

Accusato nuovamente presso Giovanni VIII, successore di Adriano, d'aver cambiata la fede e violata la tradizione dei maggiori, e fatto venire a Roma per giustificarsi davanti a Giovanni, ai vescovi e alcuni membri del clero romano, gli fu facile provare e di essere egli rimasto sempre fedele alla fede cattolica, e d'avervi istruito gli altri con zelo: e quanto all'impiego della lingua Slava nella liturgia aver egli agito rettamente per seri motivi e col permesso di Papa Adriano, e che d'altronde la S. Scrittura non vi si opponeva
punto. Perciò il Papa prese allora le difese di Metodio, e ordinò, anche con pubblicazione di lettere, di riconoscere il suo potere arcivescovile e la sua delegazione presso gli Slavi. Quindi Metodio ritornato in Moravia, continuò ad adempire con sempre maggior diligenza la carica affidatagli, sopportando perciò volentieri anche l'esilio. Condusse alla fede il principe di Boemia colla moglie, e propagò d'ogni parte tra quel popolo il nome cristiano. Portò la luce del Vangelo nella Polonia, e, secondo alcuni scrittori, fondata, la sede vescovile di Leopoli, penetrò nella Moscovia propriamente detta, e vi fondò il Vescovado di Kiew. Finalmente ritornò tra i suoi in Moravia, e sentendosi ormai vicino al termine della vita, si designò lui stesso il successore; ed esortato il clero e il popolo alla virtù con estreme raccomandazioni, terminò placidissimamente questa vita, che per lui fu via al cielo. Come Roma a Cirillo, così la Moravia rese a Metodio, appena morto, sommi onori. La loro festa solita celebrarsi già da gran tempo dai popoli Slavi, il sommo Pontefice Leone XIII ordinò che si solennizzasse ogni anno con Ufficio e Messa propria da tutta la Chiesa.

Omelia 17ma sui Vangeli.
Il Signore e Salvatore nostro, fratelli carissimi, ci avvisa ora con parole ed ora con opere. Infatti le sue opere sono precetti; e, quando fa qualche cosa, anche senza dir nulla, ci mostra quello che dobbiamo fare noi. Ecco, dunque, egli manda i discepoli a predicare a due a due, perché sono due i precetti della carità, cioè l'amor di Dio e l'amor del prossimo, e bisogna essere almeno in due per poter praticare la carità. Infatti propriamente parlando, non si esercita la carità verso se stessi; ma l'amore, perché possa essere carità, deve avere per oggetto un altro.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Il Signore l'ha amato ed onorato: l'ha rivestito con un manto di gloria,
* e l'ha incoronato alle porte del paradiso.

Ecco dunque che il Signore manda i discepoli a predicare a due a due, insinuandoci così tacitamente come, chi non ha carità verso gli altri, in nessun modo deve assumersi l'ufficio della predicazione. E con ragione si dice che li mandò davanti a sé in ogni città e luogo dove egli stava per andare. Infatti il Signore segue i suoi predicatori; la predicazione infatti precede, e allora il Signore viene ad abitare nell'anima nostra, quando è preceduto dalle parole di coloro che ci esortano; ed è così che la verità è ricevuta dallo spirito.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Siano cinti i vostri fianchi ed accese nelle vostre mani le lucerne, e

Infatti il Signore ascese da occidente; perché quanto più il Signore si è abbassato nella sua passione, tanto più ha manifestato la sua gloria nella risurrezione. Ascese veramente da occidente, perché, risorgendo, calpestò la morte che aveva subita. Noi dunque prepariamo la strada a colui che salì da occidente, quando predichiamo alle vostre anime la sua gloria, affinché egli stesso poi venendo, le illumini con la sua presenza e con il suo amore.

From the Encyclical Letter of Pope Leo XIII
The brethren Cyril and Methodius were born in an honourable position at Thessalonica. As they advanced in years they went to Constantinople to study letters in the capital of the Eastern world. Both made quick progress, but most chiefly Cyril, who gained such learning that he was called for excellency the Philosopher. Methodius became a monk, but the Empress Theodora, on the recommendation of the Patriarch Ignatius, deemed Cyril worthy of receiving the task of teaching Christianity to the Khazar who dwelt beyond the Crimea. By the grace of God he so taught them that they laid aside their many superstitions and were joined to Jesus Christ. After properly establishing the new community of Christians Cyril hastened back to Constantinople, where he entered the monastery of Polychron, whither Methodius had already withdrawn himself. Rastilaw, Prince of Moravia, having heard tell of the good deeds beyond the Crimea, sent to Constantinople to the Emperor Michael III to obtain some Gospel labourers. Cyril and Methodius were sent to him, and gladly received in Moravia, and applied themselves with such power and industry to the work of Christianising souls that it was not long before that nation also joyfully submitted to Jesus Christ. To this end Cyril found of great use the knowledge of the Slavonic language, which he had already acquired, and much effect was produced by the translation of holy Scripture which he made into the language of the people. Cyril and Methodius were the inventors of the alphabet in which the language of the Slavs is characteristically expressed, and for this reason they have been not unjustly termed the fathers of Slavonic literature.

Then the happy tidings of what they had done reached Rome, the Supreme Pontiff the holy Nicholas I. commanded these excellent brethren to come to Rome. When they started for Rome they brought with them the relics of the supreme Pontiff the holy Clement I which Cyril had discovered at Cherson. On hearing of their approach Adrian II, who had succeeded to the Papacy upon the death of Nicholas, went forth to meet them accompanied by the clergy and people with every sign of honour. Then Cyril and Methodius gave to the Supreme Pontiff in the presence of the clergy an account of the Apostolic office which they had discharged in so holy and toilsome a manner. When it was made blame to them by some enviers that they had used the Slavonic language for the purposes of public worship, they stated their reasons with such clearness and force that the Pontiff and clergy praised and approved them. When they had both taken an oath that they would remain in the faith of blessed Peter and of the Roman Pontiffs, they were consecrated bishops by Adrian, but it was the Will of God that Cyril, old in grace rather than in years, should close his life at Rome. His dead body received a public funeral, and was laid in the tomb which Adrian had built for himself, but it was afterwards brought to St. Clement's and buried hard by the ashes of that martyr. As it was carried through the city with joyful psalm-singing, it seemed as though the procession were rather that of a triumph than that of a funeral, and that the Roman people were offering heavenly honour to some eminent saint. Methodius went back to Moravia, and there became from his whole soul a pattern to his flock, and from day to day more zealous in the service of Catholicism. He confirmed the Pannonians, the Bulgarians, and the Dalmatians in the Christian religion, and laboured much to bring the Corinthians to the worship of the one true God.

Methodius was again accused before John VIII, the successor of Adrian, of unsoundness in faith, and transgression of the traditions of the elders he was summoned to Rome, and there easily proved, in the presence of John and of some Bishops and clergy of the city, that he had himself always firmly held the Catholic faith, and had carefully taught it to others, and that as regarded the use of the Slavonic language for public worship, he had acted lawfully from certain reasons, and the permission of Pope Adrian, and in nowise contrary to holy writ. The Pontiff therefore in this matter concurred with Methodius, and confirmed even in writing his archepiscopal authority and his mission among the Slavs. Methodius therefore went back to Moravia and resumed more earnestly than before the task committed to him, for the which also he cheerfully suffered exile. He converted the Prince of the Bohemians and his wife, and spread the Christian name far and wide among that people. He carried the light of the Gospel into Poland, and according to some writers, after establishing the see of Leopolis, went into Muscovy properly so called and established the see of Kieff. At the last he returned into Moravia, and when he felt that he was about to go the way of all flesh he named his own successor, exhorted the clergy and people for the last time to good living, and then calmly departed that life which had been to him a path to heaven. As Rome had honoured Cyril in his death, so did Moravia honour Methodius. The festival of these Saints, which had long been observed among the Slav nations, the Supreme Pontiff Leo XIII. ordered to be kept throughout the Universal Church with a special office and Mass.

Dearly beloved brethren, our Lord and Saviour doth sometimes admonish us by words, and sometimes by works. Yea, His very works do themselves teach us for that which He doth silently His example still moveth us to copy. Behold how He sendeth forth His disciples to preach by two and two since there are two commandments to love, that is, a commandment to love God, and a commandment to love our neighbour and where there are not two, the one, being alone, hath not whereon to do the Lord's commandment. And no man can properly be said to love himself: for love tendeth outward toward our neighbour, if it be the love whereto the Gospel doth oblige us.

A Wurtzburg, in Germània, san Chiliàno Vescovo, il quale, mandato dal Romano Pontefice a predicare il Vangelo, avendo convertito molti a Cristo, fu trucidato insieme coi Compagni Colomànno Prete e Totnàno Diacono.
A Porto Romàno cinquanta santi soldati Martiri, i quali, convertitisi alla fede nel martirio di santa Bonósa e battezzati dal beato Papa Felice primo, nella persecuzione dell'Imperatore Aureliàno furono uccisi.
A Cesarèa, in Palestina, san Procópio Martire, il quale, sotto l'Imperatore Diocleziàno, condotto da Scitópoli a Cesarèa, per la franchezza delle sue prime risposte, dal Giudice Fabiàno fu decapitato.

At Porto, in Italy, fifty holy soldiers, all martyrs, who were brought to the faith through the testifying of holy Bonosa, baptized by the blessed Pope Felix, and slain in the persecution under the Emperor Aurelian.
In Palestine, the holy martyr Procopius. In the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian he was brought from Bethshan, [where he Was reader, exorcist, and interpreter in the church,] to Caesarea, where at the constancy of his very first answers he was beheaded by the command of Fabian the judge.
At Constantinople, the holy Abrahamite monks, who resisted the Emperor Theophilus concerning the worship of the holy images, and therefore suffered martyrdom.
At Wurzburg, in Germany, holy Killan, Bishop of that city. [An Irish monk, who travelled to Rome in the year 686, was sent by the Roman Pontiff Conon to preach the Gospel.]
When he had turned many to Christ he was murdered, [in the year 689,] along with Colman a Priest and Tatnan a Deacon.
At Rome, the blessed Pope Eugenius III. He had been Abbot of the monastery of SS. Vincent and Anastatius, near Rome, before he was made Supreme Pontiff. He ruled the universal Church with wonderful holiness and wisdom. [His name was Bernard Paganelli, and he was a native of Pisa, and Canon of that city. He then became a monk of Cîteaux and disciple of St. Bernard before being elected Pope on February 15, 1145, and consecrated in the Benedictine Abbey of Farfa on the 16th of that month. He died at Tivoli on July 8, 1153.]
