Mi sovvengo di te, o Pietro, e ne rimango stupito: mi ricordo di te, o Paolo, e, fuori di me, mi struggo in lacrime. Non so che dire, non so profferir parola, contemplando le vostre sofferenze. Quante prigioni avete santificato! quante catene avete onorato! quanti tormenti sostenuto! quante maledizioni tollerate! come avete portato lontano il Cristo! come avete allietate le Chiese colla vostra predicazione! Le vostre lingue sono strumenti benedetti: le vostre membra sono state coperte di sangue per la Chiesa. Voi avete imitato Cristo in tutto: «In tutta la terra si è sparsa la vostra voce, e le vostre parole son giunte sino ai confini dell'orbe terrestre» Ps. 18,5.

Libro 2 Commento al capit. 14 di Matteo
Signore comandò ai discepoli di passare dall'altra riva e li obbligò a montare in barca. Con questa maniera di parlare si fa vedere che essi si allontanarono a malincuore dal Signore, non volendo per amor del Maestro, separarsene neppure un momento. «Ed egli, licenziate le turbe, salì solo su un monte a pregare» Matth. 14,23. Se si fossero trovati con lui i discepoli Pietro, Giacomo e Giovanni, che avevano visto la gloria della sua trasfigurazione, forse sarebbero saliti sul monte con lui; ma la turba non può seguirlo sulle alture, s'egli non l'ha istruita presso il mare, sul lido, e nutrita nel deserto.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Questi sono coloro che, vivendo nella carne, hanno fondato la Chiesa col loro sangue:

Quanto poi all'essere salito solo a pregare, non riferirlo a colui che con cinque pani saziò cinquemila persone, senza contare i piccoli e le donne; ma a colui, che, udita la morte di Giovanni, si ritirò nella solitudine: non già perché noi ammettiamo due persone nel Signore, ma perché distinguiamo le operazioni che fa come Dio e che fa come uomo. «Frattanto la barca in mezzo al mare era sbattuta dalle onde» Matth.14,24 . Ben a ragione gli Apostoli si erano allontanati a malincuore e per forza dal Signore, credendo di far naufragio in sua assenza.

Finalmente, mentre il Signore se ne sta sulla cima del monte, d'un tratto si leva un vento contrario, e sconvolge il mare, e gli Apostoli corrono pericolo; e la tempesta continua a minacciarli di naufragio, finché non giunge Gesù. «Ma circa le tre del mattino egli andò verso di loro camminando sul mare» Matth. 14,25. Le stazioni e vigilie militari si dividevano in spazi di tre ore. Dicendo dunque, che il Signore andò verso di loro circa le tre del mattino, ci mostra che stettero in pericolo tutta la notte; e ciò per significare che sul finir della notte, cioè alla fine del mondo, egli porgerà aiuto ai suoi.

The Lord commanded His disciples to cross over to the other side, and constrained them to get into a ship. By these expressions we perceive that they were unwilling to leave the Lord, the love of their Teacher making them desire not to lose a moment of His company. And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up into a mountain apart to pray. Perchance, if Peter, and James, and John, who had seen Him in the glory of the Transfiguration, had been with Him, they would have gone up into the mountain with Him, but the common herd could not follow Him, save when He taught them on the sea shore, or fed them in the wilderness.

℟. These are they who while yet they lived in the flesh, planted the Church in their own blood;

I santi Vescovi e Confessori Cirillo e Metódio fratelli, il cui natale rispettivamente si commemora il quattordici Febbraio e il sei Aprile.
A Roma i santi Martiri Clàudio cancelliere, Nicóstrato primo dei notari, sposo della beata Martire Zoe, Castòrio, Vittorino e Sinforiàno, i quali tutti da san Sebastiano furono condotti alla fede di Cristo, e dal beato Policàrpo Prete battezzati. Mentre erano occupati nel ricercare i corpi dei santi Martiri, il Giudice Fabiàno li fece prendere e tentatili per dieci giorni con minacce e con lusinghe, senza poter punto rimuoverli dal loro proposito, li fece torturare per tre volte, poi sommergere in mare.

Martyrology {anticipated}
On the morrow we keep the feast of the translation of the holy martyr Thomas, Archbishop of Canterbury. [On the which 7th day of July, in the year of our Lord 1223, his body was raised from its grave in the crypt of Canterbury Cathedral and placed in a shrine.]
July 7th 2026, the 22nd day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Rome, the holy martyrs Claudius the book-keeper, Nicostratus the chief clerk, Castorius, Victorinus, and Symphorianus, whom holy Sebastian brought to believe in Christ and the blessed Priest Polycarp baptized. Fabian the judge ordered them to be arrested while they were seeking the bodies of holy martyrs, and troubled them for ten days with threats and cajolery. When he found that he was in nowise able to move them, he ordered them to be tortured and afterwards to be cast into the sea, [in the year 302.]
At Durazzo, in Macedonia, the holy martyrs Peregrin, Lucian, Pompey, Hesychius, Papius, Saturninus, and German. These were Italians by nation, and fled to Durazzo during the persecution under Trajan. When they came thither they saw holy Bishop Astius hanging upon the cross for Christ's faith's sake, whereupon they openly confessed themselves to be Christians, and by command of the President they were first tried and then drowned in the sea.
At Perugia, the blessed Pope Benedict XI, surnamed Tarvisini, a Friar of the Order of Preachers, who in the short while of his Papacy did wondrous much for the peace of the Church, the restoration of discipline, and the increase of religion. [He died at Perugia in 1304, after reigning eight months and some days.]
At Alexandria, the holy Pantaenus. He was a man apostolic and adorned with all wisdom. Such was his use and love toward the Word of God that he went glowing with faith and earnestness to preach the gospel of Christ to the nations that are in the uttermost parts of the East. Thence he returned to Alexandria, and there at length he fell asleep, under the Emperor Antoninus Caracalla, [in the year 214.]
At Brescia, the holy Confessor Apollonius, Bishop [of that see, second century.]
In Saxony, holy Willibald, first Bishop of Eichstatt, who laboured in the Gospel along with holy Boniface and turned many peoples to Christ, [he died in the year 786,] whose feast we keep upon the 9th day of this present month of July.
