(David), questo re sì grande e potente, non poté tenere in sé neppure un piccolo momento il peccato che pesa sulla coscienza; ma con una pronta confessione e con un dolore immenso si scaricò del suo peccato davanti al Signore. Mi troveresti ora facilmente un ricco ed onorato il quale, rimproverato di qualche colpa, non lo soffra con molestia? Egli invece, nello splendore della potenza reale, encomiato sì sovente dalle sante Scritture, allorché un uomo privato gli rimprovera un grave delitto, non freme di sdegno, ma confessa la sua colpa e ne geme con dolore.

La prontezza del perdono dimostra che il pentimento del re era ben profondo, per cancellare così l'offesa d'un tal traviamento. Gli altri uomini, quando vengono ripresi dai sacerdoti, aggravano il loro peccato sia col cercare di negarlo, sia di scusarlo; e commettono così una colpa maggiore proprio là dove si sperava di vederli rialzarsi. Ma i santi del Signore, che bramano di continuare il pio combattimento e di correre la via della salute, se talvolta, uomini quali sono, avviene loro di mancare più per fragilità di natura che per proposito di peccare, si rialzano più ardenti alla corsa, e stimolati dall'onta della colpa, la compensano con più rudi combattimenti; così che la caduta, invece di aver causato loro qualche ritardo, non ha servito che a stimolarli e a farli avanzare di più.

Libro 6 al capo 9 di Luca dopo il principio
Dopo che questa donna, che figurava la Chiesa, fu guarita da per dita di sangue, dopo che gli Apostoli furono scelti ad evangelizzare il regno di Dio, Gesù distribuì l'alimento della grazia celeste. Ma osserva a chi egli lo dispensa. Non agli oziosi, non a quelli che se ne stanno in città, cioè a quelli che s'attardano nella sinagoga o si compiacciono degli onori del secolo; ma a quelli che cercano Cristo fin nel deserto. Quelli che vincono ogni ripugnanza, dessi sono accolti da Cristo, con essi s'intrattiene il Verbo di Dio, non degli affari del mondo, ma del regno di Dio. E se fra questi ve n'ha che siano afflitti da infermità corporali, egli accorda subito loro il beneficio della guarigione.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

Qui i cinque pani ricordano il latte: il cibo più sostanzioso, e il corpo di Cristo; la bevanda più corroborante e il sangue del Signore.

Yet that strong and great King would not suffer the acknowledgment of his iniquity to remain, even for a moment, hidden in his own heart. With eager confession and bitter sorrow, he admitted that he had sinned against the Lord. Which of you will easily find me now some honoured and wealthy person, who will not take it ill if I rebuke him for a fault whereof he is guilty? But David, amid the splendours of a throne and' the certainty of Divine revelations, when he was rebuked by one of his subjects for his grievous transgression, was not roused to anger, but contrariwise, acknowledged his sin with groans and affliction.

Reading 5
The heart-felt sorrow of David moved the Lord to compassion, so that Nathan said Because thou hast repented, the Lord also hath put away thy sin. The instant gift of pardon declareth the depth of the King's repentance, which was able to obtain the forgiveness of so grievous a transgression. Other men, when they be rebuked of Priests, do but aggravate the heinousness of their sins by the seeking to deny or to excuse them, and thereby make deeper their fall by means of that which should have helped them up. But the saints of the Lord who will to fight a good fight of godliness unto the end and to finish their course by saving their souls, howbeit, they may perchance have fallen like other men, have done so rather through man's weakness than through lust for iniquity, and rise more eager to go on than before. Shame goadeth them on to fly at higher things. So that not only is their fall to be reckoned to have nowise hampered them, but rather to have quickened their speed.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

What meaner men blush to do, the King was not ashamed to own. They who are answerable to law are bold to deny their crimes, and too haughty to ask pardon. Not so he, though he could be haled before no earthly judgment-seat. That he sinned was a matter flowing from his nature; that he asked for pardon, his own repentance. To fall is common to all men, but his confession was his own. To transgress thus was nature; to efface his guilt, greatness.

He gave it not to such as dwell at ease, not to men in cities, not to such as sit in places of worldly splendour, but to men seeking Christ in a desert place. Such as are not given to niceness are they whom Christ receiveth, and unto whom the Word of God speaketh, not of earthly things, but of the kingdom of God 11. And if any bear in them the running sores of fleshly passion, He healeth them.

Ottava dei santi Apostoli Piétro e Pàolo.
A Gerusalèmme sant'Isaia Profeta, il quale, sotto il Re Manasse, morì segato in due parti, e fu sepolto sotto la quercia di Rogel, vicino alla corrente delle acque.
A Fièsole, in Toscana, san Romolo, Vescovo e Martire, discepolo del beato Piètro Apostolo. Mandato dal medesimo Apostolo a predicare il Vangelo, annunziò Cristo in molti luoghi d'Italia, e infine, tornato a Fièsole, ivi, sotto il Principe Domiziano, fu coronato col martirio insieme con altri Compagni.
A Roma il natale di san Tranquillino Martire, padre dei santi Marco e Marcelliàno, il quale, convertitosi a Cristo per la predicazione di san Sebastiano Martire, dal beato Policarpo Prete fu battezzato, e da san Càio Papa fu ordinato Sacerdote. Nel giorno dell'Ottava degli Apostoli, mentre faceva orazione presso la confessione del beato Pàolo, ivi, sotto l'Imperatore Diocleziàno, fu preso dai pagani, e, da essi lapidato, compì il martirio.
A Londra, in Inghiltèrra, san Tommaso Moro, Cancelliere del Regno, il quale, per la fede cattolica e per il primato del beato Piètro, per ordine del Re Enrico ottavo, fu decapitato.
In Campania santa Doménica, Vergine e Martire, la quale, sotto l'Imperatore Diocleziàno, avendo spezzato gl'idoli, condannata alle fiere, ma per niente da esse offesa, finalmente decapitata passò al Signore. Il suo corpo si conserva con somma venerazione a Tropèa, in Calabria.
Nello stesso giorno santa Lucia Martire, la quale, Campàna di nascita, presa da Riziovàro Vicario e crudelmente tormentata, convertì lui stesso a Cristo. Ad essi si aggiunsero Antonino, Severino, Diodóro, Dióne ed altri diciassette, che furono compagni nella passione e partecipi della corona.
A Nettuno, nel Làzio, santa Maria Gorètti, piissima fanciulla, crudelissimamente uccisa per la difesa della propria verginità, che il Papa Pio dodicesimo solennemente annoverò nel catalogo delle sante Vergini.

Martyrology {anticipated}
On the morrow is the Octave of the holy Apostles Peter and Paul.
July 6th 2026, the 21st day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

In Judea, the holy Prophet Isaiah, who was sawn asunder under King Manasseh, [about 715 B.C.,] and was buried under the oak at En Rogel beside the flowing of the waters, [the first of the four Greater Prophets.]
At Rome, the holy martyr Tranquillinus, father of the holy martyrs Mark and Marcellian. He had been converted to Christ by the preaching of the holy martyr Sebastian, baptized by the blessed Priest, Polycarp, and himself ordained a Priest by the holy Pope Caius. He was praying at the grave of blessed Paul, upon the Octave Day of the Apostles, when the pagans under the Emperor Diocletian tried and stoned him. And so he finished his testimony, [in the year 286.]
At Fiesole, in Tuscany, the holy martyr Romulus, Bishop [of that see,] a disciple of Peter. He was sent forth by the Apostle to preach the gospel, and when he had proclaimed Christ in many places of Italy, he came back to Fiesole, where he and many Companions were crowned with martyrdom under the Emperor Domitian.
In Campania, the holy Virgin and martyr Dominica, [fourth century.] Under the Emperor Diocletian she was condemned to the beasts for breaking idols, but the beasts did not hurt her. She was then beheaded, and so passed away to be ever with the Lord. Her body is kept with great reverence at Tropea, in Calabria.
On the same day, the holy martyr Lucy, a Campanian by race, who, being tried and sharply tormented under the Vicar Rixius Varus, turned him to Christ, with whom were joined Antoninus, Severinus, Diodorus, Dion, and seventeen others, who all suffered and were crowned together.
