Pregandoci l'Apostolo Paolo la grazia di nostro Signore Gesù Cristo, sorgente di tutti i beni, resta che noi ci mostriamo degni d'un tal patrocinio, non solo ascoltando qui la voce di Paolo, ma ancora meritando di vedere là in alto, quando ci andremo, l'atleta di Cristo. Anzi, se l'ascolteremo qua, lo vedremo certamente là, benché non gli staremo vicino; però lo vedremo risplendente presso il trono reale, dove i Cherubini glorificano Dio, dove volano i Serafini. Là noi vedremo Paolo occupare con Pietro il posto di principe e duce del coro dei Santi, e godremo della sua fraterna carità.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Vidi degli uomini riuniti, che avevano splendide vesti, e un angelo del Signore si rivolse a me con queste parole:

Ma, lasciando da parte tutto questo, io la chiamo beata perché Paolo, quando viveva, amò tanto i suoi abitanti, li istruì colla sua voce, e finalmente finì in mezzo a loro la sua vita. Ed essi ora ne posseggono il sacro corpo. Ed ecco ciò che ha reso celebre questa città sopra ogni altra cosa; e come un grande e robusto corpo essa ha due occhi fulgenti, i corpi cioè di questi due Santi.

Pensate e sbigottite, quale spettacolo sarà per Roma; vedere cioè d'un tratto risorgere da quel monumento Paolo con Pietro per esser portati in alto incontro al Signore. Che rosa Roma non presenterà a Cristo! di quale doppia corona non è ornata questa città! di quali auree catene non è essa cinta! quali fonti ella non possiede! Per questo dunque ammiro questa città, non già per l'abbondanza del suo oro, né per le sue colonne, né per qualunque altra bellezza materiale, sibbene per queste due colonne della Chiesa. Chi mi darà ora di stringermi intorno al corpo di Paolo, di appiccicarmi al suo sepolcro, di vedere la polvere di quel corpo in cui egli compiva quanto ancora mancava alla passione di Cristo, portandone le stimmate, spargendone dappertutto, come una semente, la predicazione del Vangelo?

Ci saranno due ordine di eletti nel giudizio: uno di giudicanti col Signore, dei quali questo passaggio parla, che abbandonarono ogni cosa, e Lo hanno seguito: l'altro di quelli che verranno giudicati dal Signore, che non non abbandonarono proprio tutte le loro cose in pari modo, ma tuttavia di quelle che avevano, si preoccupavano di dare elemosine ai poveri di Cristo: quindi anche essi saranno uditori nel giudizio: «Venite, benedetti dal Padre mio, prendete possesso del regno preparato a voi fin dalla fondazione del mondo: perché ebbi fame, e mi deste da mangiare: ebbi sete, e mi deste da bere.»

Ma impariamo, narrante il Signore, che ci saranno lì anche due ordini dei reprobi: uno di coloro, che iniziati ai misteri della fede cristiana, disprezzano esercitare le opere della fede, per i quali nel giudizio è testificato: «Via da me, maledetti, al fuoco eterno, che fu preparato pel diavolo e pei suoi angeli: poiché ebbi fame, e non mi deste da mangiare». L'altro di coloro, che non o non ricevettero mai la fede ed i misteri di Cristo, o abbandonarono la fede ricevuto per apostasia: de quali dice: «chi non crede, è stato già condannato: perché non crede nel nome dell'unigenito Figlio di Dio».

Lettura 9
Ora ricordato un poco questi con timore e giusta paura, convertiamo piuttosto l'udito alle lietissime promesse del Signore e Salvatore nostro. Vediamo quale sia la grazia di tanto grande pietà: promette ai suoi seguaci non solo i premi della vita eterna, ma anche doni eccelsi di quella presente «E chiunque, disse, avrà abbandonato la casa, o i fratelli, o le sorelle, o il padre, o la madre, o la moglie, o i figli, o i poderi per amor del mio nome, riceverà il centuplo, e possederà la vita eterna». Chi infatti avrà rinunziato agli affetti o ai possedimenti terreni per esser discepolo di Cristo, tanto più nell'amore di Lui avrà profittato, tanto più numerosi troverà, che gioiranno nell'accoglierlo con affetto interiore, e sostentare con le proprie sostanze.

Serm. xxxii. in the Moral Exhortations
Apostle Paul wisheth unto us the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, as the mother of all good, and it remaineth for us to show ourselves worthy of the care of such a Protector, that we may not only listen to Paul's voice, while we are here, but when we pass away to the hereafter, may earn a sight of that great soldier of Christ. Yea if we listen to him here, we shall see him there. Not nigh, but from afar off, shall we see him see him standing near the glory of that Kingly throne where the Cherubim glorify God, where the Seraphim are flying, there shall we see Paul along with Peter, a prince and a leader of the army of the saints, and we shall rejoice in his brotherly love.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. I saw men standing together, clad in shining raiment, and the Angel of the Lord spoke unto me, saying:
* These men are holy, for they are the friends of God.

For if, while he was yet here, he so loved men, that, although he would fain have been dissolved and been with Christ, yet he was willing still to tarry for man's sake, much greater is the tender love which he now showeth. This is why I love Rome, although if I would, there are many other things for which I might praise her her greatness, her antiquity, her beauty, her population, her empire, her wealth, or her victories. But all these I pass by, and I call Rome blessed for this cause, that Paul in his lifetime loved her children so well, was so kindly toward them, taught openly there, and at length laid down his life among them. They have there his holy body, and this alone maketh that city illustrious more than doth aught else. And just as a great and strong body hath two bright eyes, so are the bodies of these two Holy Apostles in the city of Rome.

℟. Blessed are ye when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for My sake;
* Rejoice, and be exceeding glad, for great is your reward in heaven.
℣. When men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of Man's sake.

Reading 6
Not brighter is the sky when the sun doth make it all light with his beams, than is the city of Rome darting forth these twin rays of light to the uttermost bounds of the earth. There it is that Paul, there it is that Peter, will rise, and be caught up to meet the Lord in the air. Thess. iv. 16. Think, and thrill at the thought, of what Rome will see then, when she beholdeth Paul and Peter rising suddenly out of that coffin, to be caught up to meet the Lord. What rose will Rome offer to Christ? What twin crowns are they wherewith that city is adorned withal? What fresh springs hath she in her? Therefore it is that I marvel at that city, not because of the abundance of her gold, not because of her pillars, not because of any other loveliness that she hath, but because of these two pillars of the Church. Would that I could even now embrace the corpse of Paul that I could cling to his grave that I could see the dust of that body, which filled up those things that were behind of the sufferings of Christ Col. i. 24, which bore about in it the marks of the Lord Jesus Gal. vi. 17, and which went everywhere carrying the seed of the Gospel.

In the judgment to come, the elect will be in two classes. One class are they who have forsaken all, and followed the Lord: and these shall judge along with Him. The other class are they who have not equally forsaken all that they had, but who have been careful daily to give alms of their goods to the poor of Christ: these shall be the subjects of judgment, and these are they who shall then hear these words: “Come, ye blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was an hungered, and ye gave Me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave Me drink.” Matth. xxv. 34, 35.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

℟. These are they who while yet they lived in the flesh, planted the Church in their own blood;
* They drank of the Lord's cup, and became the friends of God.

Of the reprobate also we gather, from the words of the Lord, that there will be two classes. One class are they who, being made partakers in the mystery of Christian faith, have neglected to show their faith by their works: these are they to whom it will be said at the judgment: “Depart from Me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: for I was an-hungered, and ye gave Me no meat.” The other class are they who either have never received the faith and mysteries of Christ, or who, having received, have apostatised, and abandoned it: and touching these it is said: “But he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only-begotten Son of God.” John iii. 18.

And now that we have touched for a moment, with fear and just dread, upon these things, let us rather turn our hearing to the right joyful promises of our Lord and Saviour. Let us look what His so great, beautiful, and fatherly love will give to such as follow Him; not the reward of life everlasting only, but gifts exceeding precious in this life also. “Every one,” saith He, that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for My Name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.” For every one that shall forsake earthly affections and goods, to go and be Christ’s disciple, the further he goeth on in Christ’s love, the more shall he find who will rejoice to give him a place in their hearts, and to minister to him of their substance.

ACremona, in Lombardia, sant'Antonio Maria Zaccaria Confessore, Fondatore dei Chierici Regolari di san Pàolo e delle Vergini Angeliche: insigne per ogni virtù e per miracoli, dal Papa Leone decimoterzo fu ascritto fra i Santi. Il suo corpo si venera a Milàno, nella chiesa di san Barnaba.
A Roma santa Zoe Martire, moglie del beato Nicostrato Martire, la quale, sotto l'Imperatore Diocleziàno, mentre pregava alla confessione del beato Apóstolo Piètro, fu legata dai persecutori e gettata in oscurissimo carcere; quindi fu sospesa pel collo e pei capelli ad un albero, sotto il quale fu fatto un orribile fumo, e così, nella confessione del Signore, rese lo spirito.
A Gerusalèmme sant'Atanàsio Diacono, il quale, a causa del santo Concilio Calcedonèse fu preso dagli eretici e dopo aver sofferto tormenti di ogni genere, finalmente fu ucciso col ferro.

Martyrology {anticipated}
On the morrow we keep the Feast of St. Anthony Mary Zaccaria, Confessor, founder of the Clerks Regular of St. Paul, a man illustrious for every virtue, and famous for miracles. Leo XIII enrolled his name among those of the Saints. His body is reverenced at Milan, in the Church of St. Barnabas.
July 5th 2026, the 20th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Rome, the holy martyr Zoe, the wife of the blessed martyr Nicostratus. She was praying at the grave of the blessed Apostle Peter when she was arrested by the persecutor under the Emperor Diocletian, and committed to a dark prison. In the end she was hung on a tree by her neck and hair, and a thick smoke made below her, and so, constantly confessing the Lord, gave up the Ghost.
In Syria, the holy martyr Domitius, [in the year 363,] who by his power doth many kindnesses unto the dwellers there.
At Cyrene, in Libya, the holy martyr Cyrilla, [in the year 310.] In the persecution under Diocletian live embers mixed with incense were laid upon her hand, and she held them there for a long while, lest, if she jerked away the live coals, she should seem to have offered the incense, when she was most cruelly mangled, and so passed away to Christ her Bridegroom adorned with her own blood.

103:7 A tuo comando minaccioso esse fuggiranno: * al rombo del tuo tuono saranno prese da spavento.
103:8 Si alzano i monti, e si avvallano i piani * nel luogo che tu hai loro assegnalo.
103:9 Hai fissato un termine alle acque, che esse non oltrepasseranno: * e non torneranno a coprire la terra.
103:10 Tu fai scaturire le fontane nelle valli, * le acque scorreranno fra i monti.
103:11 Ne berranno tutte le bestie dei campi, * aneleranno ad esse gli onagri nella loro sete.
103:12 Sopra di esse abiteranno gli uccelli del cielo: * di mezzo alle roccie faranno udire le loro voci.
