Perciò si cerca una fanciulla d'Israele, Abisag Sunamitide perché dormisse col re e ne riscaldasse il corpo invecchiato. Chi è questa Sunamitide moglie e vergine, tanto calda da riscaldare un re freddoloso, e tanto santa che, riscaldandolo, non lo provoca a libidine? Dica il sapientissimo Salomone in che cosa suo padre trovò sue delizie, ed egli, il pacifico, faccia conoscere l'oggetto delle tenerezze del re guerriero: «Possiedi la sapienza, possiedi la prudenza» Prov. 4,5-9. Non dimenticartelo, e non allontanarti dalle parole della mia bocca: non l'abbandonare, ed essa ti custodirà: amala, e ti conserverà. Principio di sapienza si è acquistare la sapienza e possedere l'intelligenza a prezzo di tutti i tuoi beni: impossessatene, ed essa ti esalterà; onorala, ed essa ti abbraccerà sì da aggiungere aumento di grazia al tuo capo. Né con ciò voglio dire che i giovani e gli uomini ancora vigorosi, quelli almeno che devono la loro scienza al lavoro e a uno studio assiduo ed insieme a una vita santa e all'abitudine di pregare il Signore Gesù, siano in una fredda indifferenza per la sapienza, e che il suo culto non languisca punto, per effetto dell'età, in molti vecchi; ma dico che l'adolescenza ha da sostenere, da parte del corpo, molte lotte, e che fra l'esca del vizio e le lusinghe della carne, la sapienza, come il fuoco sotto un ammasso di legno verde, si trova così soffocata da non poter mandare il suo splendore. Il vecchio al contrario che informò la sua adolescenza alle arti liberali, e medita giorno e notte la legge del Signore, diventa più dotto cogli anni, meglio formato grazie all'esperienza, più saggio col progresso del tempo, e, nei suoi vecchi giorni, raccoglie i più dolci frutti delle sue antiche fatiche.

Gesù ci avverte qui che le parole lusinghiere e le arie di mansuetudine si devono valutare dal frutto delle opere; e che uno si deve apprezzare non secondo ciò che si mostra nelle parole, ma secondo che si mostra nei fatti; perché spesso la veste di pecora serve a nascondere la ferocia del lupo. Dunque, come le spine non producono le uve, ne i cardi i fichi, e come gli alberi cattivi non danno buoni frutti; così c'insegna che la realtà delle buone opere non consiste in queste maniere esterne, ma che ognuno deve riconoscersi dalle sue opere. Perché non e lo zelo delle parole che conquista il regno del cieli; né colui che dice: «Signore, Signore» Matth. 7,21 sarà erede di esso.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

Quindi bisogna metterci del nostro per meritare la beatitudine eterna, e trarre qualche cosa dal nostro proprio fondo, cioè dobbiamo volere il bene, evitare il male, obbedire con tutto il cuore ai divini precetti e così meritare la sorte d'essere ammessi nell'amicizia di Dio, e vediamo piuttosto di eseguire ciò che egli vuole, che di gloriarci di ciò ch'egli può; ripudiando egli e rigettando quelli che per l'iniquità delle loro opere sono stati allontanati dalla sua amicizia.

The Lord here warneth us that we must rate the worth of soft words and seeming meekness, by the fruits which they that manifest such things bring forth in their works, and that we should look, in order to see what a man is, not at his professions, but at his deeds. For there are many in whom sheep's clothing is but a mask to hide wolfish ravening. But “Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so, every good tree bringeth forth good fruit, but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.” Thus, the Lord teacheth us, is it with men also; evil men bring not forth good fruits, and hereby are we to know them. Lip-service alone winneth not the kingdom of heaven, nor is every one that saith unto Christ: “Lord, Lord,” an heir thereof.

What use is there in calling the Lord, Lord? Would He not be Lord all the same, whether or not we called Him so What holiness is there in this ascription of a name, when the true way to enter into the kingdom of heaven is to do the will of our Father, Who is in heaven? “Many will say to Me in that day: Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy Name?” Already here doth the Lord rebuke the deceit of the false prophets, and the feigning of the hypocrites, who take glory to themselves because of the power of their words, their prophesying in teaching, their casting out of devils, and such-like mighty works.

A Roma sant'Anacléto, Papa e Martire, il quale, reggendo dopo san Clemènte la Chiesa di Dio, la decorò con un glorioso martirio.
A Bambérga il natale di sant'Enrico primo. Imperatore Romàno e Confessore, il quale con santa Cunegonda, sua moglie, conservò perpetua verginità, e indusse santo Stéfano, Re d'Ungheria, con quasi tutto il suo regno, ad abbracciare la fede di Cristo. La sua festa si celebra il quindici di questo mese.

Nella Macedònia il beato Sila, uno dei primi fratelli in Cristo, il quale essendo stato dagli Apostoli destinato, insieme con Pàolo e Barnaba, alle Chiese dei pagani, ripieno della grazia di Dio adempì con ardore il ministero della predicazione, e, glorificando Cristo nei suoi patimenti, alla fine si riposò.
Così pure san Serapióne Martire, il quale, sotto l'Imperatore Severo ed il Preside Aquila, per mezzo del fuoco pervenne alla corona del martirio.
Nell'isola di Chio santa Mirope Martire, la quale sotto l'Imperatore Décio e il Preside Numeriàno, percossa colle stanghe, passò al Signore.

Fra loro erano pure i nobilissimi Salutare Arcidiacono e Muritta, secondo nell'ufficio di ministri, i quali, essendo divenuti tre volte Confessori, ambedue, a motivo della loro perseveranza, si resero gloriosamente illustri in Cristo.

He was full of the grace of God, earnestly discharged his duty of preaching, and when he had glorified Christ in his sufferings, afterwards fell asleep. Also the holy martyr Serapion, who under the Emperor Severus and the President Aquila attained through fire unto the crown of martyrdom.
In the island of Chios, the holy martyr Myropis, who under the Emperor Decius and the President Numerian was broken with bars, and so passed away to be with the Lord.
In Africa, the holy Confessors Eugenius, Bishop of Carthage, glorious for faith and good works, and all the Clergy of that church, to the number of five hundred or more, [in the year 505,] in the persecution of the Vandals, under the Arian King Hunneric, suffered stripes and hunger among whom were very many Readers that were little children and were driven into cruel exile but rejoicing in the Lord.
