Anacleto, Ateniese, governò la Chiesa sotto l'imperatore Traiano. Egli decretò che un vescovo sarebbe consacrato da tre vescovi, non di meno; che i chierici sarebbero ammessi agli ordini sacri pubblicamente dal proprio vescovo; che dopo la consacrazione si comunicassero tutti nella Messa. Decorò la tomba del beato Pietro, e destinò un luogo per la sepoltura dei Papi. In due ordinazioni nel mese di Dicembre creò cinque preti, tre diaconi, sei vescovi. Governò nove anni, tre mesi, dieci giorni. Ricette la corona del martirio, e fu sepolto al Vaticano.

Anacleto, Ateniese, governò la Chiesa sotto l'imperatore Traiano. Egli decretò che un vescovo sarebbe consacrato da tre vescovi, non di meno; che i chierici sarebbero ammessi agli ordini sacri pubblicamente dal proprio vescovo; che dopo la consacrazione si comunicassero tutti nella Messa. Decorò la tomba del beato Pietro, e destinò un luogo per la sepoltura dei Papi. In due ordinazioni nel mese di Dicembre creò cinque preti, tre diaconi, sei vescovi. Governò nove anni, tre mesi, dieci giorni. Ricette la corona del martirio, e fu sepolto al Vaticano.

I principi m'han perseguitato senza ragione : ma il mio cuore ha temuto (solo) le tue parole » Ps. 118, 161. Il Martire ha ragione di dire che ingiustamente egli soffre i tormenti delle persecuzioni ; egli che niente ha rubato, a nessuno ha fatto violenza, non ha versato il sangue di alcuno, non ha violato il talamo di nessuno ; egli che nulla ha fatto contro le leggi, ed è costretto a subire i supplizi dei più grandi scellerati ; egli che dice il giusto, ma non è sentito ; che espone verità salutari, ed è perseguitato, così che può dire ; «Quando parlavo loro, mi combattevano senza ragione »Ps. 119, 7. Il Martire ha ragione di dire che ingiustamente egli soffre i tormenti delle persecuzioni ; egli che niente ha rubato, a nessuno ha fatto violenza, non ha versato il sangue di alcuno, non ha violato il talamo di nessuno ; egli che nulla ha fatto contro le leggi, ed è costretto a subire i supplizi dei più grandi scellerati ; egli che dice il giusto, ma non è sentito ; che espone verità salutari, ed è perseguitato, così che può dire ; «Quando parlavo loro, mi combattevano senza ragione »Ps. 119, 7. Mentre dunque rivolgiamo le nostre esortazioni all'orecchio della vostra santità, pensate che vi parli colui, del quale facciamo le veci: sia perché vi esortiamo con lo stesso suo affetto, sia perché nient'altro predichiamo a voi se non quello che egli ha insegnato, scongiurandovi a vivere una vita casta e sobria e timorata di Dio, avendo cinto i fianchi del vostro spirito. Come dice l'Apostolo, siete mia gioia e mia corona, se la vostra fede, che dall'inizio del Vangelo è stata predicata in tutto il mondo, rimarrà nell'amore e nella santità. Infatti anche se è necessario che tutta la Chiesa, che è presente in tutta la terra, fiorisca di ogni virtù; tuttavia è conveniente che vi segnaliate tra gli altri popoli per i meriti della vostra pietà, perché voi, fondati sulla stessa roccia della pietra apostolica, siete stati redenti assieme agli altri dal Signore nostro Gesù Cristo, e siete stati istruiti più di tutti dal beato apostolo Pietro.
