Bonaventura, nato a Bagnorea in Toscana, fanciullo ancora fu liberato da una malattia mortale per le preghiere di san Francesco, al cui ordine sua madre aveva fatto voto di consacrarlo, se fosse guarito. Perciò, adolescente, volle abbracciare l'istituto dei frati Minori, nel quale, sotto la direzione di Alessandro d'Ales, giunse a tale perfezione di dottrina, che, laureatosi dopo sette anni a Parigi, vi spiegò pubblicamente con somma lode i libri delle Sentenze, che poi illustrò anche con ammirabili commentari. Né eccelse soltanto per erudizione scientifica, ma ancora per integrità di costumi, per innocenza di vita, per umiltà, mansuetudine, disprezzo delle cose terrene e desiderio delle celesti; degno veramente d'essere tenuto quale modello di perfezione e d>essere chiamato santo dal beato Tommaso d'Aquino, cui era legato da grandissimo affetto. Questi infatti avendolo trovato occupato a scrivere la vita di san Francesco: Lasciamo, disse, che un Santo scriva d'un Santo.

Infiammato d'amor divino, si sentiva trasportato da singolare affetto di devozione verso la passione di Cristo Signore, che meditava di continuo e verso la Vergine Madre di Dio, cui si era tutto consacrato; studiandosi sommamente di eccitarlo e accrescerlo anche negli altri colla parola, coll'esempio e cogli scritti. Di qui quella soavità di maniere, quella grazia e carità di dire, che usava con tutti e colla quale si legava indissolubilmente l'animo di ognuno. Onde trentacinquenne appena, fu all'unanimità eletto a Roma ministro generale dell'ordine; ed egli portò la nuova carica per ben diciott'anni con mirabile prudenza e santità. Fece molte ordinazioni a vantaggio della regolare disciplina e ad incremento dell'ordine, che egli difese felicemente insieme cogli altri ordini mendicanti dalle calunnie dei maldicenti.

Chiamato dal beato Gregorio X al concilio di Lione e creato cardinale vescovo d'Albano, fu di grandissimo aiuto nelle ardue questioni di quel concilio; per cui e si composero i dissidi dello scisma, e si rivendicarono i dogmi della Chiesa. Durante questi lavori, se ne morì a cinquantadue anni di età, della nostra salute 1274, con grandissimo dispiacere di tutti, e l'intero concilio e lo stesso sommo Pontefice onorarono della loro presenza i suoi funerali. Illustre per moltissimi e grandissimi miracoli, Sisto IV lo iscrisse nel numero dei Santi. Scrisse molte opere, in cui congiungendo somma erudizione a pietà ardente, istruisce insieme e commuove il lettore: onde meritamente Sisto V l'insignì del titolo di Dottore Serafico.

Fate attenzione a ciò che disse, «Voi siete il sale della terra»: tramite ciò mostra quanto necessariamente insegni queste cose. Non infatti, disse, solo della vostra vita, ma di tutto il mondo dovrete render conto. Non vi mando certo solo a due città, o a dieci, o a venti, come mandavo i profeti: ma ad ogni terra e fino al mare, e a tutto il mondo, e questo è oppresso da vari crimini.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Il Signore l'ha amato ed onorato: l'ha rivestito con un manto di gloria,

Dicendo infatti, «Voi siete il sale della terra», mostra che tutta la natura degli uomini è vanificata, e corrotta dalla violenza dei peccati: e quindi richiede da loro quelle virtù, che massimamente sono necessarie ed utili per procurare la salvezza di molti. Infatti chi è mansueto e modesto, e misericordioso e giusto, non rinchiude solo dentro di sé queste cose fatte bene, ma farà defluire queste eccellenti fonti anche all'utilità degli altri. Quindi chi è puro di cuore e pacifico, e e sopporta la persecuzione per la verità, nondimeno stabilisce la vita per il bene comune.

Non pensate quindi, disse, che sarete condotti a facile battaglie, né che dovrete far conto di cose da poco. Voi siete il sale della terra. Cosa allora? Hanno medicato cose putrefatte? Per niente: né infatti è possibile che quelle cose che sono già corrotte siano riparate tramite la frizione del sale. Non fecero perciò questo, ma le cose prima rinnovate, ed a loro affidate, e già liberate da quella putrefazione, aspergevano di sale, e conservavano in quella novità, che avevano preso dal Signore. Certamente liberare dalla putredine del peccato, è proprio del potere di Cristo: ma ché non ritornino di nuovo a questi, è proprio della cura e del lavoro degli Apostoli.

Reading 4
Bonaventure was born at Bagnarea in Tuscany, in the year of our Lord 1221. In his infancy he was dangerously ill, and his mother made a vow that, if he recovered, she would dedicate him to the Order of Blessed Francis. While he was still a young man he entered the Order by his own wish. Under the teaching of Alexander of Hales he advanced so quickly in learning, that in seven years he lectured publicly at Paris on the Books of the Sentences, with great applause. He afterwards explained the same Books by a brilliant Commentary. After six years he was made General Master of his Order at Rome, in which office he did his duty with such wisdom and holiness as caused all men to talk of him and marvel at him.

He was the author of many books, in which the depth of his learning and the earnestness of his godliness affect the reader and teach him at the same time. Gregory X., moved by his reputation for wisdom and holiness, created him a Cardinal and Bishop of Albano. Blessed Thomas of Aquino gave him the title of Saint even during his life -time. It fell on this wise. Thomas found him writing the Life of St. Francis, and said, Let us leave one Saint to work for the other. He departed this life at the Council of Lyons, upon the 14th day of July 1274, being of the age of 53 years, and having worked many miracles. Pope Sixtus IV. numbered him among the Saints.

Consider how that the Lord saith: “Ye are the salt of the earth,” by the which figure He showeth what a necessary of life is the Gospel. By this figure, He hath us to know that they unto whom He spake have an account to render, not of their own life only, but for the whole world. Not unto two cities, saith the Lord, nor unto ten, nor unto twenty, nor unto one people, as I sent the Prophets, send I you. But I send you unto every land and sea, even unto the whole world, lying groaning, as it is, under the burden of diverse sins.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

℟. The Lord loved him and beautified him He clothed him with a robe of glory
* And crowned him at the gates of Paradise.

Martyrology {anticipated}
On the morrow we keep the feast of holy Swithun, Bishop of Winchester, of whom mention is made upon the 2nd day of this present month of July.
July 15th 2026, the 30th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Bamberg, the holy Emperor Henry II. He and his wife Cunegunda preserved perpetual virginity. He brought holy Stephen, king of Hungary, and nearly all his realm, to believe in Christ, [972-1029.] We keep feast in his honour upon the 21st day of this present month of July.
At Porto, in Italy, the holy martyrs Eutropius and the sisters Zosima and Bonosa.
At Carthage, the blessed Deacon Catulinus, in praise of whom holy Augustine preached a sermon to the people, and the holy martyrs Januarius, Florence, Julia, and Justa, who were buried in the Basilica of Faustus.
At Alexandria, the holy martyrs Philip, Zeno, Narseus, and ten little children.
In the island of Tenedos, the holy martyr Abudemius, who suffered under Diocletian.
At Sebaste, the holy physician Antiochus, who was beheaded under the President Hadrian. Milk ran out of his body instead of blood, whereby Cyriacus the headsman was turned to Christ, and himself suffered martyrdom.
At Pavia, the holy martyr Felix, Bishop [of that see, in the year 243.]
At Nisibis, holy James, Bishop of that city, a man of great holiness, and famous for his wonders and his learning. He was one of the Confessors in the persecution under the Emperor Galerius Maximian. At the Council of Nicea, [in the year 325,] he condemned the perversity of Arius in opposing the definition that our Lord Christ is homousius that is, of one Being with the Father, and it was at the prayers of this James, and of Alexander Archbishop of Constantinople, that the same Arius received the due reward of his iniquity at Constantinople, when his bowels gushed out.
At Naples, in Campania, holy Athanasius, Bishop of that city, who suffered much from his ungodly nephew Sergius, and was thrust out of his see.
In the time of King Charles the Bald, [in the year 872,] he passed away from earth to heaven, worn out with sorrow, at Veroli.
At Palermo is commemorated the finding of the body of the holy Virgin Rosalie of that city. It was found by revelation from God, in the year of the jubilee, under the Supreme Pontiff Urban VIII, and Sicily was freed from the plague. [She was of the family of Charlemagne, and was born at Palermo in 1130 and died in 1160. Her body was found in 1625, when the exposition of it caused the plague to cease at Palermo.]
