Enrico, soprannominato il Pio, da duca di Baviera, divenuto re di Germania e poi imperatore dei Romani, non contento dei ristretti confini di una dominazione temporale, si mostrò servo devoto del Re eterno per ottenere la corona dell'immortalità. Padrone pertanto dell'impero, mise ogni studio e cura nel propagare la religione, rialzando con maggior magnificenza le chiese distrutte dagli infedeli, e colmandole di moltissime elargizioni e proprietà. Eresse lui stesso monasteri e altri pii luoghi, o ne aumentò le rendite. Fece tributario di san Pietro e del Romano Pontefice il vescovato di Bamberga, fondato coi suoi beni patrimoniali. Accolse fuggitivo Benedetto VIII, che gli aveva data la corona imperiale, e lo ristabilì sulla sua Sede.

℟. Il Signore lo fece ricco, lo guardò dai nemici e lo protesse da coloro che lo insidiavano

Lettura 5
Trattenuto da grave malattia nel monastero di Montecassino, ne fu guarito da san Benedetto con stupendo miracolo. Con un importante diploma fece grandi donativi alla Chiesa Romana, e intraprese per difenderla una guerra contro i Greci, e ricuperò la Puglia che questi occupavano da molto tempo. Solito di non intraprender nulla senza aver pregato, più volte vide l'Angelo del Signore e i santi Martiri protettori combattere per lui nelle prime file. E col soccorso divino trionfò delle nazioni barbare più colle preghiere che colle armi. Condusse alla fede di Cristo l'Ungheria fino allora infedele, maritando sua sorella al re Stefano, che ricevette il battesimo. Con raro esempio unì la verginità collo stato matrimoniale, e presso a morire rese Cunegonda, sua moglie, alla propria famiglia, vergine.

Dopo aver disposto, colla più grande prudenza, di tutto ciò che riguarda l'onore e l'utilità dell'impero, e lasciato qua e là in Francia, Italia e Germania tracce illustri della sua religiosa munificenza; dopo aver sparso dappertutto il più soave odore d' un'eroica virtù, più celebre per la santità che per lo scettro, terminate le fatiche della vita, fu chiamato dal Signore alla ricompensa del regno dei cieli l'anno della salute 1024. Il suo corpo fu sepolto a Bamberga nella chiesa dei santi Apostoli Pietro e Paolo; e Dio, per glorificarlo, operò subito molti miracoli sulla sua tomba. Eugenio III, poi, dopo averli canonicamente approvati, lo iscrisse nel numero dei Santi.

Omelia di s. Gregorio papa
Omelia sui Vangeli.
La lettura del santo Vangelo, fratelli carissimi, è chiara. Ma affinché, per la sua stessa semplicità, non sembri a qualcuno troppo elevata, esaminiamola brevemente in modo che la sua esposizione sia chiara per quelli che la ignorano, senza essere gravosa per quelli che la conoscono. Il Signore dice: «Siano cinti i vostri fianchi». Noi cingiamo i fianchi, quando freniamo con la continenza i movimenti della carne. Ma poiché è poco astenersi dal male, se ciascuno non si applica ancora, e con assidui sforzi, a fare il bene, subito si aggiunge: «e le lucerne siano accese nelle vostre mani». Noi teniamo in mano le lucerne accese, quando diamo al nostro prossimo con le buone opere esempi che lo illuminano. A proposito di tali opere il Signore dice: «La vostra luce risplenda davanti agli uomini, affinché essi vedano le vostre opere buone e glorifichino il Padre vostro che è nei cieli».
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Questi ha praticato davanti a Dio grandi virtù e ha lodato il Signore con tutto il suo cuore:
* egli interceda per i peccati di tutti gli uomini.

Lettura 8
Sono due quindi le cose che vengono comandate: cingere i fianchi e tenere le lucerne: cioè la castità deve risplendere nel nostro corpo e la luce della verità nelle nostre opere. Infatti l'una cosa senza l'altra non può assolutamente essere gradita al nostro Redentore; né colui che compie opere buone, finché non abbandoni le sozzure della lussuria, né colui che eccelle per la sua castità ma non si esercita nelle opere buone. Né la castità dunque è una grande virtù senza le opere buone, né le opere buone possono valere qualcosa senza la castità. Ma anche se si osservano i due comandamenti, rimane il dovere, per chiunque si tratti, di tendere con la speranza alla patria superna e di non star lontano in alcun modo dai vizi soltanto per l'onore di questo mondo.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

«E voi siate come coloro che aspettano il loro padrone quando torni dalle nozze, per aprirgli subito appena giungerà e picchierà alla porta». Il Signore in verità viene quando si affretta al giudizio; picchia poi quando, con gli affanni della malattia, ci avverte che ormai la morte è vicina. Noi gli apriamo subito, se lo riceviamo con amore. Non vuole infatti aprire al giudice che picchia, colui che ha paura di uscire dal corpo e ha timore di vedere questo giudice, che ricorda di aver disprezzato. Ma chi è tranquillo per la sua speranza e per il suo modo di agire, apre subito a chi picchia, perché accoglie con gioia il giudice; e, quando è vicino il tempo della morte, egli si rallegra pensando ad una gloriosa retribuzione.

Reading 4
Henry II., surnamed the Pious, became successively Duke of Bavaria, in the year 995, King of Germany, in 1002, and the Emperor of the Romans, in 1014. His hope soared beyond the short enjoyment of a fleeting kingdom, and he aimed at the possession of an unfading crown by living as the loyal servant of the Eternal King. After he became Emperor, he earnestly set himself to the furtherance of the cause of godliness. He restored with new splendour the Churches which had been ruined by the unbelievers, and enriched them with many offerings and possessions. Monasteries and other godly places he either built himself, or endowed them with allowances. He founded out of his own family inheritance the Bishopric of Bamberg, and made it tributary to Blessed Peter and to the Bishop of Rome. When Benedict VIII, who had set on his head the Imperial crown, was an exile, he hospitably received him, and afterwards restored him to his See.

Then he was struck down with a grievous sickness in the Monastery of Monte Cassino, he was healed by an evident miracle through the intercession of St Benedict. He was a princely benefactor to the Church of Rome, for the defence of which he entered into a war against the Greeks, and took again from them the province of Apulia, which they had long possessed. He never undertook anything until he had made it a subject of prayer. And in battle he once saw the Angel of the Lord and the Holy Martyrs (Laurence, George, and Adrian) his patrons under whose protection he had placed his army, fighting for him in front of his line. With the help of God, he prevailed against the tribes of savages more by prayer than by arms. He gave his sister in marriage to King Stephen of Hungary, whom he induced to be baptized, and so brought all that country to believe in Christ. His marriage with the holy maiden Cunegunda is one of the rare instances of the union of two virgins. When he drew near to death, he gave her back inviolate to her kinsfolk.

He managed with great wisdom whatever could tend to the honour and usefulness of the Empire. He left in France? Italy, and Germany, splendid monuments of his godly munificence. The perfume of his saintly life spread its sweetness far and wide, and the glory of his holiness outshone the splendour of his crown. When the work of his life was done, he was called by the Lord to the possession of an eternal kingdom (on the 14th day of July,) in the year of salvation 1024. His body was buried in the Church of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul at Bamberg, and God glorified him by the miracles which began forthwith to take place at his grave. The same being duly proved, Eugene III numbered him among the Saints.

Dearly beloved brethren, the words of the Holy Gospel, which have just been read, lie open before you, and, lest their very plainness should make them seem to some to be hard, we will go through them with such shortness as that neither may they which understand not remain unenlightened, nor they which understand be wearied. The Lord saith Let your loins be girded about. Now, we gird our loins about, when by continency we master the lustful inclination of the flesh. But, forasmuch as it sufficeth not for a man to abstain from evil deeds, if he strive not to join thereto the earnest doing of good works, it is immediately added And your lights burning. Our lights burn when, by good works, we give bright example to our neighbour; concerning which works the Lord saith Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father Which is in heaven. Matth. v. 16.
