4 Ma adesso il Signore Dio mio mi ha dato pace da ogni parte, e non c'è avversario né contrarietà alcuna.

9 I miei servi li porteranno dal Libano al mare, e io li farò mettere in zattere sul mare, per trasmetterli al luogo che mi indicherai; e ivi li farò posare, e tu li farai ritirare, e mi darai quanto mi bisogna per il vitto della mia casa.

Alessio, nobilissimo Romano, lasciata per un vivo amore a Gesù Cristo e dietro particolare avviso di Dio la prima notte delle nozze la sua sposa vergine, intraprese il pellegrinaggio dei più celebri santuari del mondo. Durante questi viaggi rimase sconosciuto per diciassette anni, finché un giorno avendo un'immagine della santissima Vergine Maria divulgato il suo nome in Edessa, città della Siria, partì subito su di una nave. Approdato al porto di Roma, fu ricevuto da suo padre come un povero straniero; e dopo esser rimasto sotto il tetto paterno diciassette anni a tutti sconosciuto, se ne volò al cielo sotto il pontificato d'Innocenzo I, lasciando uno scritto col suo nome, cognome e il rimanente dell'intera sua vita.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Il Signore lo fece ricco, lo guardò dai nemici e lo protesse da coloro che lo insidiavano
* e gli procurò eterna gloria.

Dal libro dei Morali di san Gregorio Papa
Lib. 10, Cap. 16. sul cap. 12 di Giobbe.
La semplicità del giusto sarà derisa » Job 12, 4. La sapienza di questo mondo consiste : nel nascondere il cuore con ogni astuzia, nell'occultare colle parole il pensiero ; nel far vedere vero ciò eh 'è falso e nel mostrare falso ciò ch'è vero. Questa sapienza certo i giovani la acquistano coll'uso, i fanciulli l'apprendono col danaro; quelli che la posseggono, insuperbiscono e disprezzano gli altri ; quelli che non la conoscono, sottomessi e timidi l'ammirano negli altri ; perché essi amano quella stessa iniqua doppiezza, mascherata di altro nome, venendo qualificata urbanità siffatta perversità di spirito. Questa sapienza mondana insegna ai suoi discepoli a ricercare il colmo degli onori, a gioire vanamente dell'acquisto di una gloria temporale, a rendere abbondantemente agli altri il male ricevutone; a non cedere mai, finché le forze assistono, a chi fa opposizione ; e, quando manca il coraggio, a dissimulare sotto apparenza di bontà e dolcezza, l'impotenza della loro malizia.

La sapienza dei giusti al contrario consiste: nel non agire mai per ostentazione, nel dire ciò che si pensa, nell'amare il vero com'è, nell'evitare il falso, nel far il bene gratuitamente, nel soffrire il male molto volentieri piuttosto che farlo, nel non cerca vendetta dell'ingiuria, nello stimare un guadagno l'oltraggio che si sostiene per la verità. Ma questa semplicità dei giusti viene derisa; poiché i sapienti di questo mondo credono una sciocchezza la virtù della sincerità. Tutto ciò infatti che si fa innocentemente, senza dubbio essi lo stimano stoltezza e tutto ciò che ha l'impronta delle verità nelle (nostre) opere, suona stoltezza alla sapienza carnale. Infatti che di più stupido agli occhi del mondo che manifestare il proprio pensiero quando si parla, non simulare niente con abili espedienti, non ripagare gli affronti con ingiurie, pregare per quelli che ci maledicono, cercare la povertà, abbandonare i propri beni, non resistere a chi ci deruba, offrire l'altra guancia a chi ci percuote?
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Quest'uomo fece tutto ciò che Dio gli aveva ordinato e Dio gli disse: Entra nel mio riposo,

Libro 3zo su Matt. cap. 19
Grande fiducia! Pietro era pescatore, non era mai stato ricco, si guadagnava il cibo col lavoro delle mani; e tuttavia dice con gran sicurezza: «Abbiamo abbandonato tutto». E siccome non basta solo abbandonare, aggiunge ciò che è perfetto: «E ti abbiamo seguito». Abbiamo fatto quello che hai comandato: che cosa ci darai dunque per ricompensa? E Gesù disse loro : «In verità vi dico: voi che mi avete seguito, quando nella rigenerazione il Figlio dell'uomo siederà sul trono della sua maestà, siederete anche voi su dodici troni a giudicare le dodici tribù d'Israele». Non disse: Voi che avete lasciato ogni cosa, poiché questo lo fece anche il filosofo Crates, e molti altri disprezzarono le ricchezze, ma disse: «Voi che mi avete seguito»; il che è proprio degli apostoli e dei credenti.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Questi ha praticato davanti a Dio grandi virtù e ha lodato il Signore con tutto il suo cuore:
* egli interceda per i peccati di tutti gli uomini.

Lettura 8
«Nella rigenerazione, quando il Figlio dell'uomo si sarà assiso sul trono della sua maestà - quando anche i morti risorgeranno incorrotti dalla corruzione - siederete anche voi sui seggi dei giudici a condannare le dodici tribù Israele», perché, mentre voi credeste, esse non vollero credere. «E chi avrà lasciato la casa, o i fratelli, o le sorelle, o il padre, o la madre, o la moglie, o i figli, o i campi per amor del mio nome, riceverà il centuplo e possederà la vita eterna». Questo passo è in armonia con l'altra affermazione del Salvatore che dice: «Non sono venuto a portare la pace, ma la spada. Perché sono venuto a dividere il figlio dal padre suo, e la figlia dalla madre, e la nuora dalla suocera; e l'uomo avrà per nemici quelli di casa». Coloro dunque che, per la fede in Cristo e per la predicazione del Vangelo avranno disprezzato tutti gli affetti e le ricchezze e i piaceri del mondo, costoro riceveranno il centuplo e possederanno la vita eterna.

* siate come coloro che aspettano il loro padrone quando torni da nozze.

Da questa affermazione alcuni prendono occasione per sostenere che dopo la risurrezione ci sarà un periodo di mille anni nel quale, dicono, riceveremo il centuplo di tutto ciò che abbiamo lasciato e poi la vita eterna; non comprendendo che, se per tutte le altre cose la ricompensa è conveniente, per quanto riguarda la moglie, sarebbe una vergogna che colui che ne ha lasciata una per il Signore in futuro ne ricevesse cento. Questo dunque è il significato: chi avrà abbandonato per il Salvatore i beni carnali, ne riacquisterà di spirituali; e paragonare il valore di questi a quello dei primi, sarà come paragonare il numero cento ad un piccolo numero.

Alexis was a member of one of the noblest Roman families. Through his exceeding great love for Jesus Christ, he received a particular command from God to leave his bride untouched upon his wedding night, and to undertake a pilgrimage to the most famous Churches of the world. For seventeen years he remained occupied in these journeys and utterly unknown. At the end of that time, his name was spoken from an image of the most holy Virgin Mary in the city of Edessa, in Syria, and when he found himself recognised he took ship from thence. He landed at Porto near Rome, and fared to the house of his own father, who gave him shelter as a strange beggar. He lived there unrecognised by any for seventeen years more, and then passed away to heaven, in the time of Pope Innocent I. He left behind him a writing giving his name, family, and the story of his life.

From the Book of Moral Reflections upon Job, written by Pope St. Gregory the Great
{Bk. x, Chap. xvi, on Job xii.)
The simplicity of the righteous is made a subject of derision. The wisdom of this world hideth our true feelings by artifice, and useth language to conceal our thoughts this is the wisdom which demonstrated the truth of falsehood, and showeth the falsehood of the truth. This kind of shrewdness the young acquire by practice, and children pay for the learning it. Those who are good at this look down upon their neighbours those who are bad at it are humble and timid, and wonder at it in others they regard this astuteness too, wrong though it be, with wistful admiration, under softened epithets. Unstraightforwardness is called good breeding. The principles of the world teach those who entertain them, to try and rise to distinction, and when they have attained the bubble of glory which is so soon to pass away, to feel it sweet to have at their feet them on whom they may wreak rich revenge. These principles teach a man, as long as he is strong enough, to give way to nobody else, and, if he hath no chance by force, to try and attain his object by diplomacy.

The wisdom of the righteous is the contrary of all this. They seek to avoid deception, to give their thoughts a clear expression in their words, to love the truth because it is the truth, to avoid falsehood, and rather to suffer than to inflict evil. Such are they who seek not to avenge themselves for wrong, and deem it gain to be despised for the truth's sake. This their simplicity is made a subject of derision, for such as are wise in this world believe the purity of their virtue to be simple foolery. Whatsoever is done innocently, they consider without doubt stupid. Such works as the truth approveth are idiotic, when tried by carnal standards of wisdom. After all, what stupider thing is there in this world than to express our real thoughts in our words, to keep nothing quiet by skilful tact, to repay no injuries, to pray for them which curse us, to seek poverty, to give up property, to strive not with such as take from us, to turn the other cheek to the smiter?

Peter was a fisherman, he was not rich, he earned his bread by his hand and skill, and nevertheless he is thus bold, and saith confidently: We have forsaken all. And because it sufficeth not to forsake only, he addeth that which to do is to be perfect: and followed thee. We have done that which Thou hast commanded us, what reward therefore wilt Thou give us? And Jesus said unto them Amen I say unto you, that ye which have followed Me, in the regeneration, when the Son of Man shall sit in the throne of His glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. He said not, Ye which have forsaken all, for this did even Crates the philosopher, and they which have set nothing by riches are many, but, Ye which have followed Me. Such men consider not that though in other things this were worthy, as touching wives it is unseemly for it becometh us not to think that he that hath forsaken one wife in this world, shall receive an hundred wives in that which is to come. But the meaning is this, that every one that for the Saviour's sake hath forsaken earthly things, shall receive spiritual things which things, being rightly weighed against earthly things, are as though an hundredfold were weighed against one.

Martirologio {anticipated}
Anno del Signore 2026, 18 Luglio, Luna 3

San Camillo de Lellis, Sacerdote e Confessore, Fondatore dei Chierici Regolari ministri degli infermi, celeste Patrono degli ospedali ed infermi, il cui giorno natalizio è ricordato il quattordici di questo mese.
A Tivoli santa Sinforósa, moglie di san Getùlio Martire, con sette suoi figli, cioè Crescènte, Giuliano, Nemèsio, Primitivo, Giustino, Stàtteo ed Eugènio. La loro madre, sotto il Principe Adriano, per l'insuperabile costanza, prima fu lungamente percossa con guanciate, quindi sospesa per i capelli, e da ultimo legata ad un sasso, precipitata nel fiume; i figli poi, legati a pali e stirati cogli argani, con diverso genere di morte compirono il martirio. I loro corpi furono trasportati a Roma, e, sotto il Papa Pio quarto, furono ritrovati nella Diaconia di sant'Angelo in Pescheria.
A Utrecht san Federico, Vescovo e Martire.
A Doróstoro, nella Misia inferiore, sant'Emiliano Martire, il quale al tempo di Giuliano l'Apòstata, sotto il Preside Capitolino, gettato in una fornace, ricevette la palma del martirio.
A Cartàgine santa Gundéne Vergine, la quale, per ordine del Proconsole Rufino, per la confessione di Cristo, fu torturata quattro volte con lo stiramento sull'eculeo in diversi tempi, orribilmente squarciata cogli uncini, lungamente aflitta collo squallore del carcere, e alla fine uccisa con la spada.

Martyrology {anticipated}
On the morrow we keep the feast of the holy Confessor Camillus de' Lellis, founder of the Congregation of Regular Clerks for ministering to the sick, whose birthday, [in the year 1614,] to the better life: was recorded upon the 14th of this present month of July, and whom the Supreme Pontiff Leo XIII proclaimed the patron in heaven of the sick and of those that tend them.
July 18th 2026, the 3rd day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Tivoli, the holy Symphorosa, wife of the holy martyr Getulius, along with her seven sons Crescens, Julian, Nemesius, Primitivus, Justin, Stacteus, and Eugene. Under the Emperor Hadrian the Mother, on account of her invincible constancy, was first long beaten with palm branches, then hung up by the hair, and lastly tied to a stone and thrown into the river her sons stretched upon posts by pullies, finished their testimony by diverse ways of death, [about the year 120.] Their bodies were afterwards brought to Rome, and in the time of the Supreme Pontiff Pius IV, they were found in the Diaconal church of the Holy Angel at the Fish-pond.
At Carthage, the holy Virgin and martyr Gondines. Because of her Confession of Christ the Pro-consul Rufinus caused her to be four different times racked she was horribly tormented with tearing by hooks, she suffered long a foul imprisonment, and in the end she was slain with the sword, [in the year 203.]
At Dorostorum, in Mysia, the holy Martyr Aemilian, who was cast into a furnace under the President Capitolinus, in the time of the Emperor Julian the Apostate, and so received the palm of martyrdom.

79:9 Thou hast brought a vineyard out of Egypt: * thou hast cast out the Gentiles and planted it.
79:10 Thou wast the guide of its journey in its sight: * thou plantedst the roots thereof, and it filled the land.
79:11 The shadow of it covered the hills: * and the branches thereof the cedars of God.
79:12 It stretched forth its branches unto the sea, * and its boughs unto the river.
79:13 Why hast thou broken down the hedge thereof, * so that all they who pass by the way do pluck it?
79:14 The boar out of the wood hath laid it waste: * and a singular wild beast hath devoured it.
