51 Salomone compì tutti i lavori che stava facendo per la casa del Signore, e vi portò dentro l'argento, l'oro e i vasi che aveva consacrati David suo padre, e li ripose nel tesoro della casa del Signore.
1 Allora tutti gli anziani di Israele coi principali delle tribù e i capi delle famiglie dei figli d'Israele si radunarono presso il re Salomone a Gerusalemme per trasportare l'arca dell'alleanza del Signore dalla città di David, cioè da Sion.
2 E tutto Israele si radunò dal re Salomone nel dì solenne del mese di Etanim (che è il mese settimo).

Camillo nacque a Bucchianico, nella diocesi di Chieti, dalla nobile famiglia De Lellis e da madre sessantenne, la quale, mentre lo portava nel seno, vide in sogno di aver dato alla luce un bambino munito del segno della croce sul petto, che precedeva una schiera di bambini recanti lo stesso segno. Giovanetto seguì la carriera militare lasciandosi andare per qualche tempo ai vizi del mondo; ma a venticinque anni fu così illuminato dalla grazia e concepì tanto dolore d' aver offeso Dio, che, versate all'istante moltissime lacrime, risolvette fermamente di lavare incessantemente le sozzure della vita passata, e di diventare un uomo nuovo. Quindi lo stesso giorno che accadde ciò, festa della Purificazione della beatissima Vergine, corse dai frati Minori, detti Cappuccini, pregandoli istantissimamente di riceverlo fra loro. Due volte gli venne accordato quanto domandava; ma riapertasi di nuovo una orribile ulcera di cui aveva sofferto precedentemente alla gamba, si sottomise umilmente al disegno della divina provvidenza, che lo riservava a cose più grandi; e, vincendo se stesso, lasciò due volte l'abito di quest'ordine, che due volte aveva sollecitato e ricevuto.

℟. Il Signore lo fece ricco, lo guardò dai nemici e lo protesse da coloro che lo insidiavano

Partito per Roma, fu ricevuto nell'ospedale degli Incurabili; di cui poi a motivo della sua provata virtù, gli fu affidata l'amministrazione, che tenne colla massima integrità e sollecitudine veramente paterna. Stimandosi il servo di tutti i malati, si faceva un dovere di rifare loro i letti, far le pulizie, medicarne le ulceri, e di soccorrerli nell'ultima agonia con pie preghiere ed esortazioni; nei quali uffici diede illustri esempi di ammirabile pazienza, di invincibile fortezza e d'eroica carità. Ma avendo compreso come la conoscenza delle lettere l'avrebbe aiutato moltissimo nell'unico fine che aveva di soccorrere le anime degli agonizzanti, non si vergognò, a trentadue anni d'età di mescolarsi coi bambini per apprendere i primi elementi della grammatica. Ordinato in seguito sacerdote regolarmente, gettò, di concerto con alcuni compagni unitisi a lui, le fondamenta della congregazione dei Chierici regolari a servizio degl'infermi, nonostante. gli sforzi contrari del nemico del genere umano. E Camillo, incoraggiato miracolosamente da voce celeste partita dall'immagine d'un Crocifisso che, con stupendo prodigio, gli stendeva le mani, staccate dal legno, ottenne dalla Sede apostolica l'approvazione del suo ordine, obbligando i religiosi con un quarto voto assai arduo, di assistere gli ammalati anche infetti di peste. Quanto questo istituto fosse accetto a Dio e proficuo alla salute delle anime lo provò l'attestazione di san Filippo Neri, confessore di Camillo, d'aver visto spesso degli Angeli suggerire le parole ai discepoli di questo, mentre soccorrevano i moribondi nell'agonia.

Votatosi con legami sì stretti al servizio dei malati, stupisce con quale zelo vigilava ai loro bisogni di notte e di giorno, fino all'ultimo istante della vita, senza lasciarsi vincere da alcuna fatica, senza temere alcun pericolo della vita. Facendosi tutto a tutti, si prendeva gli uffici più bassi con cuore pronto e allegro, colla più umile condiscendenza, compiendoli per lo più in ginocchio, come se vedesse Cristo medesimo negl'infermi; e per trovarsi più pronto ai bisogni di tutti, rinunziò spontaneamente al governo generale dell'ordine e alle delizie celesti onde era inondato nella contemplazione. Il suo paterno amore per i disgraziati si mostrò massimamente allorché Roma fu provata prima con una malattia contagiosa, e poi con una carestia estrema, e allorché una terribile peste devastò Nola nella Campania. Finalmente arse di tale carità verso Dio e verso il prossimo, da meritare di essere chiamato un angelo, e da essere soccorso dagli Angeli in diversi pericoli nei suoi viaggi. Dotato del dono di profezia e delle guarigioni, scoprì anche i segreti dei cuori; e per le sue preghiere ora si moltiplicarono i viveri, ora l'acqua si cambiò in vino. Affranto dalle veglie, dai digiuni e dall'assiduo lavoro, sembrando ormai non più che pelle e ossa, dopo aver sopportato coraggiosamente cinque lunghe e moleste malattie, che egli chiamava le misericordie del Signore, munito, dei sacramenti, tra i soavissimi nomi di Gesù e Maria, a quelle parole: «Il volto di Cristo ti appaia dolce e giulivo» nell'ora predetta, si addormentò nel Signore, a Roma, il 14 Luglio nell'anno della salute 1614, sessantesimoquinto della sua età. Illustrato da più miracoli, Benedetto XIV l'iscrisse solennemente nell'albo dei Santi, e Leone XIII, dietro istanza dei vescovi del mondo e con decreto della Sacra Congregazione dei Riti, lo dichiarò celeste patrono di tutti gli ospedali e infermi ovunque esistenti, e ordinò l'invocazione del suo nome nelle litanie degli agonizzanti.

Trattato 83 su Giovanni
Che pensare, fratelli miei? c'è forse un comandamento solo di amarci l'un l'altro? E non ve n'è forse un altro, più grande, quello di amare Dio? O meglio Dio ci comanda solo d'amarci, senza curarsi di altro? Evidentemente l'Apostolo raccomanda tre cose, quando dice:«Ora poi resta la fede, la speranza e la carità, queste tre cose, la più grande però di queste è la carità» 1 Cor 13,13. E se la carità, cioè l'amore perché racchiude gli altri due precetti, si dice che è maggiore, non però si dice che è sola. Così riguardo alla fede quante cose ci sono comandate, e quante intorno alla speranza! Chi può raccoglierle tutte, chi è capace di enumerarle? Ma consideriamo ciò che dice lo stesso Apostolo:«La carità è l'adempimento della legge» Rom 13,10.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Questi ha praticato davanti a Dio grandi virtù e ha lodato il Signore con tutto il suo cuore:

Ora che cosa può mancare dov'è la carità? E che cosa mai può giovare ove ella non è? Il demonio crede, ma non ama: chi non crede niente, non ama affatto. Così chi non ama, benché non gli sia tolta la speranza del perdono, pure lo spera invano; ma chi ama non può disperarsi. Pertanto dov'è l'amore, c'è di necessità anche la fede e la speranza; e dov'è l'amore del prossimo c'è pure e di necessità l'amore di Dio. Infatti, se uno non ama Dio, come potrà amare il prossimo come se stesso? E chi è che non ami neppure se stesso? È l'empio e l'iniquo; che chi ama l'iniquità, certo non ama, ma odia l'anima sua.

Commemorazione: Ss. Sinforosa e i sette figli Martiri.
Sinforosa di Tivoli, sposa del Martire Getulio ebbe da lui sette figli, Crescenzio, Giuliano, Nemesio, Primitivo, Giustino, Statteo ed Eugenio; i quali tutti furono arrestati con la loro madre sotto l'imperatore Adriano, perché professavano la fede cristiana. La loro pietà rimanendo invincibile in mezzo a numerosi e diversi tormenti, la madre, che era stata la maestra dei suoi figli nella fede, fu così anche loro di guida al martirio. Infatti attaccatale una pietra al collo, fu precipitata nel fiume: suo fratello Eugenio ne raccolse il corpo e lo seppellì. Il giorno dopo che fu il 18 di Luglio, i sette fratelli attaccati a dei pali furono uccisi in diverse maniere: Crescenzio venne sgozzato; Giuliano ebbe trafitto il petto; Nemesio ebbe perforato il cuore; Primitivo fu trapassato nell'ombelico; Giustino fatto a pezzi; Statteo trafitto con frecce; Eugenio fu squartato in due parti. Così furono immolate a Dio otto ostie accettissime. I loro corpi gettati in una fossa profonda sulla via Tiburtina a nove miglia da Roma, furono poi trasportati a Roma e deposti nella chiesa di sant'Angelo in piscina.

Reading 4
Camillus was a son of the noble family of the Lelli, and was born at Bacchianico, a town in the Diocese of Chieti, in the Abruzzi, in the year of our Lord 1550. His mother was sixty years of age at the time of his birth. While she was great with child, she dreamed that she brought forth a babe bearing the mark of a Cross upon his breast, and going before a troop of other babes marked likewise. When Camillus was a young man he served as a soldier, and yielded himself for a while to the sins of the world. In the twenty-fifth year of his age light from God broke upon him and in a violent fit of tears he determined to wipe away the evil relics of his past life, and to put on the new man. That very day, being the holiday of the Purification of the Most Blessed Virgin, he ran to the Friars Minors, who are commonly called Capuchins, and implored them to enrol him among them. They granted his wishes, but God was keeping him for greater things, and on this as well as on another occasion when he made the same attempt he was forced to abandon it by the increasing virulence of a loathsome running sore in the leg, with which he was afflicted. He meekly bowed himself to the will of Providence, and conquering his own wishes twice, stripped himself of the habit of the Order, which he had sought and received.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

℟. The Lord made him honourable, and defended him from his enemies, and kept him safe from those that lay in wait for him;

He went to Rome and was received as an inmate in the Hospital for Incurables. In consequence of his eminent good qualities the administration of the Hospital was committed to his charge, and he discharged this office with the most thorough trustworthiness and with a tenderness like a father's. He counted himself the slave of all the patients, and made it a religious duty to make their beds, clean them, dress their sores, and help by godly prayers and exhortations such as were in their last agony. In doing these things he showed himself a bright example of wonderful patience, indomitable firmness, and heroic charity. He became persuaded that a knowledge of letters would make him much more useful as a comforter to the dying, who were his peculiar care, and therefore, at the age of thirty-two years, he humbly went to school again, among little boys learning the first rudiments. After a time he took Priests' orders, and, in company with some companions who joined him, he laid the first foundations of the Congregation of Regular Clerks for ministering to the sick a scheme against which the enemy of man made an unsuccessful struggle. Camillus heard a voice from heaven issue from an image of Christ Crucified, strengthening him, and saw the nailed hands stretched out from the Cross to protect him He obtained from the Apostolic see an approval of his Institute, the members of which, (besides the three vows of Poverty, Chastity, and Obedience,) take a fourth and very stern one, by which they bind themselves to serve all sick persons, even those stricken with the plague. Holy Philip Neri, who was Confessor to Camillus, testified that he had often seen Angels prompting the members of this Congregation what they should speak when they were assisting the dying, a proof how well-pleasing in the sight of God, and how useful for the salvation of souls, is this Institution.

Then he had thus given himself entirely over by these strict ties to the service of the sick, it was wonderful to see with what earnestness Camillus, broken by no weariness, and scared by no danger to himself, watched over their comfort by day and by night as long as life lasted. Becoming all things to all men, he took with cheerful readiness the most repulsive duties, discharging them with the most humble attention, and oftentimes on his knees, as though he saw Christ Himself in His suffering members. That he might be the readier to serve every one's need, he resigned the general government of his own Institute, and denied himself the indulgence in the heavenly refreshment which abundantly poured upon him, when he fixed his mind solely upon God. His tender, fatherly love toward the wretched had its brightest manifestations when Rome was stricken first by a contagious sickness, and then by famine, and Nola in Campagna suffered from a frightful plague. His love to God and to his neighbour was so glorious that he earned the nickname of Angel, and found Angels helping him in the difficulties of his diverse journeyings. He had the gifts of prophecy and healing, and could read the secret thoughts of men's hearts. At his prayer, food was multiplied, and water turned into wine. His want of sleep, fasting, and unceasing work wore him down till he seemed nothing but skin and bones. He suffered from a complication of five different painful and incurable diseases, which he was accustomed to call the Lord's mercies to him, and which he bore bravely. He died at Rome on the day which he had himself foretold, the fourteenth of July, in the year of salvation 1614, and of his own age the 65th. He had received the Sacraments, and fell asleep in the Lord in an attempt to utter the sweet names of Jesus and Mary, while the Priest was reciting the words of the Ritual: “Gentle and joyous may the Countenance of Christ Jesus appear to thee.” He was famous for many miracles, and Benedict XIV solemnly enrolled him in the Kalendar of the Saints.

What think ye, my brethren? Is this His only commandment, this, That we love one another? Is there not another and a greater, the commandment to love God? Or hath God commanded us only to love, so that we need seek to do no more? Surely the Apostle commendeth three things: And now abideth Faith, Hope, Charity, these three but the greatest of these is Charity. 1 Cor. xiii. 13. And although in charity, that is, in love, he included the two first and great commandments, and charity he called the greatest, yet is charity not said to be alone. Concerning Faith, concerning Hope, how much is commanded us? Who can gather them all together? Who can reckon them all? And yet let us consider how the same Apostle saith: Love is the fulfilling of the Law. Rom. xiii. 10.

Commemoration of: S. Symphorosa with her Seven Sons, Martyrs
Symphorosa was a woman of Tivoli, the wife of the martyr Getulius, unto whom she bore seven sons, named respectively, Crescentius, Julian, Nemesius, Primitivus, Justin, Stacteus, and Eugene, all of whom were arrested along with their mother, in the reign of the Emperor Hadrian, for professing the Christian faith. Their love was tried by many and diverse torments, and their mother who had taught them their religion, was their leader to martyrdom. A stone was tied round her neck and she was thrown into the river. Her body was found and buried by her brother Eugene. The next day, being the 18th of July, the seven brethren were tied each to a stake, and all put to death in diverse ways. Crescentius was stabbed in the throat, Julian in the breast, Nemesius in the heart, and Primitivus in the navel. Justin was hacked limb from limb. Stacteus was shot to death with darts. Eugene was cut into two parts across his breast, (from the head downwards.) Thus were these eight sacrifices of sweet savour offered up to God. Their bodies were thrown into a deep pit, on the road between Rome and Tivoli, at the ninth milestone from Rome, but were afterwards brought to Rome and buried in the Church of the Holy Angel-in-the-Fish-market.

San Vincènzo de' Pàoli, Sacerdote e Confessore, Fondatore della Congregazione dei Preti della Missione e delle Figlie della Carità, celeste Patrono di tutte le Associazioni di carità, il quale si addormentò nel Signore il ventisette Settembre.
A Colòssi, nella Frigia, il natale di sant'Epafra, che san Pàolo Apostolo chiama compagno nella prigione. Ordinato Vescovo in Colòssi dallo stesso Apostolo, ivi chiaro per virtù, con valoroso combattimento, per le pecorelle affidategli, ricevette la palma del martirio: il suo corpo fu riposto in Roma, nella Basilica di santa Maria Maggiore.
A Tréviri san Martino, Vescovo e Martire.
A Siviglia, in Spagna, la passione delle sante Vergini Giusta e Rufina, le quali, prese dal Preside Diogeniàno, prima furono tormentate collo stiramento sull'eculeo e lacerate con uncini, poi afflitte col carcere, colla fame e con vari tormenti; da ultimo Giusta esalò lo spirito in carcere, mentre a Rufina, per la confessione del Signore, fu spezzata la testa.
A Cordova, in Spagna, sant'Aurea Vergine, sorella dei beati Martiri Adòlfo e Giovanni, la quale una volta cadde nel delitto di apostasia per istigazione di un Giudice Maomettano, ma poco dopo pentitasene, rinnovato il combattimento, vinse il nemico collo spargimento del sangue.
A Roma san Simmaco Papa, che, perseguitato a lungo dalla fazione degli scismatici, alla fine, illustre per santità, passò al Signore.

Martyrology {anticipated}
On the morrow we keep the feast of the holy Confessor Vincent of Paul, who slept in the Lord upon the 27th day of September, and whom Pope Leo XIII. proclaimed the patron before God in heaven of all charitable societies throughout the whole Catholic world which derive their origin in any way from his institution, [in the year 1660.]
July 19th 2026, the 4th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

The holy Epaphras, whom the holy Apostle Paul doth call his own fellow prisoner. He was ordained by the same Apostle Bishop of Colossi, where, illustrious for graces, he gained the palm of martyrdom in manly contending on behalf of the sheep committed to his care. His body is buried at Rome, in the Church of St Mary the greater.
At Seville, in Spain, the holy Virgins Justa and Rufina. They were arrested under the President Diogenian. They were first racked and tormented by being torn with hooks, and afterwards afflicted with imprisonment, starvation, and diverse tortures. In the end Justa gave up the ghost in prison, and Rufina had her neck broken for confessing the Lord, [at the end of the third century.]
At Cordova, the holy Virgin Aurea, who for a time fell away, but repented of what she had done, and in a renewed combat prevailed against the enemy by the shedding of her blood, [in the year 856.]
At Trier, the holy martyr Martin, Bishop [of that see, in the year 210.]
At Rome, the holy Pope Symmachus, who long suffered through the deeds of the schismatics, and at length passed away, famous for holiness, to be ever with the Lord, [in the year 514.]
At Verona, holy Felix, the Bishop.
At Mount Skete, in Egypt, holy Arsenius, a Deacon of the Church of Rome, who in the time of Theodosius betook himself to the desert, where he gave up his soul to God, finished in all graces and plentifully wet with tears, [in the year 450.]
In Cappadocia, the holy Virgin Macrina, sister to holy Basil the Great and Gregory of Nyssa, [in the year 379.]
