Girolamo, nato a Venezia dalla nobile famiglia Emiliani, datosi alla milizia fin dalla prima adolescenza, fu, in tempi difficilissimi per la repubblica, preposto alla difesa di Castelnuovo presso Quero, sui monti di Treviso. I nemici impadronitisi della fortezza, lo gettarono in una orribilissima prigione, legato mani e piedi; dove, privo d'ogni umano soccorso, egli si rivolse alla beatissima Vergine, che esaudì le sue preghiere, gli apparve, ne spezzò le catene, e per mezzo ai suoi nemici, che occupavano tutte le strade, lo condusse incolume in vista di Treviso. Entrato in città, a testimonianza del benefìcio ricevuto, sospese all'altare della Madre di Dio, cui si era votato, le manette, i ceppi, le catene che aveva portato con sé. Tornato a Venezia, cominciò a darsi interamente alle opere di pietà, spendendosi meravigliosamente a pro dei poveri , ma soprattutto compassionevole verso i fanciulli, che, privi di genitori, erravano per la città miserabili e sordidi, raccogliendoli in case, da lui affittate, nutrendoli a sue spese, e formandoli ai cristiani costumi.

℟. Il Signore lo fece ricco, lo guardò dai nemici e lo protesse da coloro che lo insidiavano

In quei giorni avevano approdato a Venezia il beato Gaetano e Pietro Caraffa, che fu poi Paolo IV, i quali approvato lo spirito di Girolamo e il suo nuovo istituto destinato a raccogliere gli orfani, lo condussero nell'ospedale degli Incurabili, dove, educando gli orfanelli, avrebbe insieme servito con pari carità ai malati. Ben tosto, dietro loro consiglio, partì per il vicino continente, ed eresse degli orfanotrofi, prima a Brescia, poi a Bergamo e a Como: soprattutto a Bergamo, dove oltre due orfanotrofi, uno per i ragazzi e l'altro per le ragazze, aprì, novità sconosciuta in quelle regioni, un asilo per le donne di mala vita convertitesi a penitenza. Fermatosi finalmente a Somasca, umile villaggio nel territorio di Bergamo, ai confini delle possessioni Venete, vi fondò una residenza per sé e per i suoi, e vi organizzò la sua congregazione, che poi da questo luogo prese il nome di Somasca; e che poi sviluppatasi e propagatasi, alla educazione degli orfani e al servizio delle chiese aggiunse, per maggiore utilità della società cristiana, la formazione dei giovani nelle lettere e nei buoni costumi in collegi, accademie e seminari, e san Pio V l'annoverò fra gli ordini religiosi, e altri Pontefici le accordarono dei privilegi.

Non pensando che a raccogliere orfani, egli partì per Milano e Pavia; e coll'aiuto di nobili personaggi, provvide di abitazione, vitto, vestito e maestri moltitudini di fanciulli radunati in ambedue questi luoghi. Ritornato a Somasca, fattosi tutto a tutti, non rifuggiva da nessuna fatica che prevedesse tornare a bene del prossimo. Mescolandosi cogli agricoltori nella campagna, li aiutava a raccogliere le biade, e spiegava loro i misteri della fede, puliva la testa dei fanciulli affetti da tigna ributtante, e li curava con pazienza; medicava le putride piaghe dei contadini così bene, che parve avesse ricevuto la grazia delle guarigioni. Scoperta sulla montagna che domina Somasca una grotta, vi si ritirò; e là flagellandosi, restando digiuno giorni interi, passando in orazione la maggior parte della notte, e non prendendo un po' di sonno che sulla nuda roccia , espiava i suoi falli e quelli degli altri. Nel fondo di questa grotta goccia dalla nuda roccia un'acqua ottenuta, secondo una costante tradizione, per le preghiere del servo di Dio; la quale scaturisce anche ai nostri giorni, e, portata in diversi paesi, ridona spesso la salute ai malati. In fine, in una peste che infieriva per tutta la vallata, mentre serviva i malati e portava i morti sulle proprie spalle alla sepoltura, attaccatoglisi il male, fece una preziosa morte, che egli aveva predetta poco prima, in età d'anni cinquantasei, nel 1537. Illustrato da numerosi miracoli in vita e dopo morte, Benedetto XIV l'iscrisse solennemente nell'albo dei Beati, e Clemente XIII in quello dei Santi.

Perché i discepoli allontanavano i bambini? Per riguardo alla sua dignità. Allora che fa egli? Per insegnar loro a sentire modestamente, e a calpestare ogni fastosità mondana, egli li accoglie, se li prende in braccio, e a chi li rassomiglia promette il regno dei cieli; come già aveva detto prima. Anche noi adunque, se vogliamo essere eredi del cielo, attendiamo con gran diligenza a questa virtù. Questo è il culmine della filosofia, essere semplici insieme e prudenti: questa la vita angelica. Difatti la vita del bambino non ha alcun vizio nell'anima; non serba ricordo delle ingiurie, ma va a chi gliene fa come ad amici, come se non fosse stato nulla. E sebbene la mamma lo batta, pure la cerca sempre e la preferisce ad ogni altra persona.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Questi ha praticato davanti a Dio grandi virtù e ha lodato il Signore con tutto il suo cuore:

Siccome poi i farisei non da altro erano mossi ad operare che da malvagità e da arroganza, perciò egli non cessa di esortare i suoi discepoli ad esser semplici, e lo raccomanda loro nello stesso tempo che li, costituisce. Poiché niente inorgoglisce tanto, quanto l'aver supremazia di autorità e di luogo. Ora, siccome i discepoli avrebbero riscosso molti onori in tutto il mondo, perciò premunisce il loro animo, né vuole ch'essi soffrano niente di umano, né vadano in cerca della popolarità, né s'innalzino sugli altri. Dacché queste cose, che sembrano piccole, dànno occasione a mali grandissimi. Difatti, per aver avuto queste convinzioni, i farisei giunsero al colmo del male, pretendendo il saluto, i primi seggi e i posti d'onore; di qui quell'amore sfrenato di gloria che li fece cadere nell'abisso dell'empietà.

Reading 4
This Jerome was born at Venice, of the Patrician family of the Miani, in the year of our Lord 1481. He was trained up to be a soldier, and in 1508, in the most troublesome times of the Commonwealth, he commanded the fortress of Castel-nuovo at Quero, in the mountains near Treviso. After the fall of the place, he was chained hand and foot, and cast into a filthy prison. When all hope of help from man had forsaken him, the Most Blessed Virgin, in answer to his prayers, mercifully came to him, loosed his fetters, and brought him unhurt within sight of Treviso, through the midst of the enemy, who kept all the roads. As soon as he entered the city of Treviso, as an acknowledgment of the favour he had received, he hung up his chains, which he had brought away with him, at an Altar of the Mother of God, to whom he had vowed himself. After his return to Venice he gave himself up to godly works. Amid his great tenderness to all the poor, his compassion was chiefly roused by the fatherless little boys who wandered through the city starving and filthy; them he took into an house conducted by himself, where at his own cost he provided them with board, lodging, clothing, and a Christian education.

In those days there came to Venice blessed Cajetan of Tiene, and Peter Carafa, who was afterwards Paul IV. They were pleased with the spirit of Jerome, and with his new Asylum for Orphans, and took him to the Hospital for Incurables, as well to bring up Orphans, as to extend his charity equally to the sick. Soon after, by the advice of the same, he went to the mainland, and built orphanages first at Brescia, then at Bergamo and Como. His chief foundations were at Bergamo, where besides an orphanage for little boys, and another for little girls, he opened an house of Refuge for repentant harlots, being the first institution of that kind in that part of the world. In the end he went to dwell at Somascha, a hamlet in the district of Bergamo, close to the frontiers of the Venetian territory, and there made an house for himself and his disciples, and gave shape to a congregation, which is generally called the Congregation of Somascha. This congregation grew and spread, and found its work not only in the education of orphans and the service of Churches, but also in a wider usefulness to the Christian Commonwealth, by training up lads in letters and good manners. Holy Pius V. enrolled it among the religious Orders, and other Popes have given it diverse privileges.

Jerome went to Milan and to Ticino to gather orphans together, and in both places he gathered a multitude of little boys for whom the charity of noblemen enabled him to provide board, lodging, clothes, and schooling. He returned to Somascha, and, still making himself all things to all men, refused no toil by which he saw that he could be of any use to his neighbour. He was used to go about in the fields, helping the reapers in their work, and meanwhile teaching them in the mysteries of the faith. He was very patient in cleansing and healing the heads of little boys foul with lice, and proved so successful a physician to the stinking sores of the poor country-people, that he got a reputation for having the gift of healing. He found a cave in the mountain which hangs over Somascha, and there he would hide himself, passing whole days without meat or drink, and oftentimes scourging himself, continuing in prayer long into the night, and taking his short sleep upon the bare rock, in expiation of his own sins and the sins of others. In the far end of this cave, there drippeth out of the dry stone some water, which is said by an unwavering tradition to have come there at the prayers of the man of God. It droppeth freely even to this day, and is taken to diverse places at a distance, where it often hath an healing effect upon the sick. At length an infectious disorder broke out in all the valley, and Jerome, who nursed the sick and carried the dead to burial on his own shoulders, caught it, and died a precious death, as he had himself foretold, (upon the 8th day of February,) in the fifty-seventh year of his age, and that of salvation 1537. He was famous for many miracles, both during his life and after his death Benedict X. solemnly enrolled his name among those of the Blessed, and Clement XIII inserted it in the Kalendar of the Saints.

And we also, if we would fain be heirs of the kingdom of heaven, let us seek with great earnestness this virtue. Martyrology {anticipated}
On the morrow we keep the feast of the holy Emperor Henry II. He and his wife Cunegunda preserved perpetual virginity. He brought holy Stephen, King of Hungary, and nearly all his realm, to believe in Christ. Of him mention is made upon the 15 th day of this present month of July.

Salmo 30(10-19) [2]
30:10 Abbi pietà di me, o Signore, perché io sono afflitto: * per l'indignazione è turbato il mio occhio, con la mia anima e le mie viscere:
30:11 Perché la mia vita si consuma nel dolore: * e i miei anni nei gemiti.
30:11 La mia forza si è infiacchita nella miseria, * e le mie ossa sono conturbate.
30:12 Sono divenuto l'obbrobrio per tutti i miei nemici, e persino per i miei vicini, * timore per miei familiari.
30:12 Quelli che mi vedevano fuori fuggivano da me. * Sono messo in oblio, come un morto, dal [loro] cuore.
30:13 Sono divenuto come un vaso spezzato. * Poiché ho udito i vituperi di molti, che mi dimorano intorno.
30:14 Mentre si riunivano contro di me, * e tennero consiglio di togliermi la vita.
30:15 Ma io sperai in te, o Signore: * io dissi: tu sei il mio Dio: nelle tue mani le mie sorti.
30:16 Liberami dalle mani dei miei nemici, * e da coloro che mi perseguitano.
30:17 Fa risplendere la tua faccia sopra il tuo servo, salvami nella tua misericordia. * Che io non resti confuso, o Signore, perché ti ho invocato.
30:18 Siano svergognati gli empi, e condotti all'inferno. * Ammutoliscano le labbra ingannatrici,
30:19 che proferiscono iniquità contro il giusto * con superbia e con disprezzo.
