Maria Maddalena, «che era stata peccatrice nella città» Luc. 7, 37, amando la verità lavò con le lacrime le macchie del (suo) peccato: e così si compié la parola della Verità: «Le son rimessi molti peccati, perché ha amato molto» Luc. 7, 47. Infatti lei che prima era rimasta fredda peccando, poi bruciava d'ardore amando. Mentre i discepoli si ritiravano dal sepolcro del Signore, ella non si ritirava. Cercava ansiosa colui che non aveva trovato; piangeva nel cercarlo, ed accesa del fuoco del suo amore, bruciava del desiderio di ritrovare colui che credeva rapito. Onde avvenne, che allora lo vedesse essa sola, ch'era rimasta a cercarlo: dacché il merito dell'opera buona è nella perseveranza.

Ma mentre andiamo cercando, ci trovano le guardie, che custodiscono la città: vale a dire, che i santi Padri, i quali vegliano alla sicurezza della Chiesa, vengono incontro ai nostri buoni desideri per istruirci colla loro parola e co' loro scritti. E solo dopo averli alquanto oltrepassati, noi troviamo l'oggetto del nostro amore: perché se il nostro umile Redentore s'è fatto uomo fra gli uomini per l'umanità, per la divinità fu sempre sopra gli uomini.

Avete ascoltato molto attentamente la lettura del Vangelo: ed il fatto che riporta è stato rappresentato esattamente agli occhi del vostro cuore. Voi avete visto non cogli occhi del corpo, ma della mente, il Signore Gesù Cristo sedere a mensa in casa d'un fariseo, il cui invito non aveva disdegnato. Avete visto anche una donna famosa, e certo di mala fama, ch'era stata peccatrice nella città, irrompere, non invitata, nel convito dove sedeva il suo medico, e domandare con santo ardire la sua guarigione; irrompe importuna per il convito, ma opportuna per il beneficio. Sapeva bene da qual morbo essa era travagliata; e conosceva che colui dal quale era andata, era capace di guarirlo.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Prima versò lacrime dal cuore, lavò i piedi del Signore con umile confessione, li asciugò coi suoi capelli, li baciò, li profumò; parlava tacitamente, non emetteva fuori parole, ma dimostrava la sua devozione. Avendo ella così toccato il Signore con bagnare, asciugare, baciare e profumare i suoi piedi, il fariseo che aveva invitato Gesù Cristo, essendo di quella genia di superbi dei quali il profeta Isaia diceva: «Che dicono; Scòstati da me, non mi toccare perch'io sono puro» Is. 65, 5 credeva che il Signore non conoscesse quella donna.

Non si doveva forse permettere a una donna impura di toccare piedi sì puri? Ma se tal donna si fosse recata ai piedi di cotesto fariseo, egli le avrebbe detto ciò che di tali afferma Isaia: «Scostati da me, non mi toccare, perch'io son puro» Is. 65, 5. Così, si accostò al Signore impura, per ritornar pura; s'accostò malata, per ritornar guarita; s'accostò confessando (le sue colpe), per ritornare professando (la sua fede).

Mary Magdalen, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, through love of the truth, washed away in her tears the defilement of her sins, and the words of the Truth are fulfilled which He spake: Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much. She who had remained chilly in sin, became fiery through love. When even His disciples went away again unto their own home, Mary still stood without at the sepulchre of Christ, weeping. She sought Him Whom her soul loved, but she found Him not. She searched for Him with tears; she yearned with strong desire for Him Who, she believed, had been taken away. And thus it befell her, that being the only one who had remained to seek Him, she was the only one that saw Him. It is the truth that the backbone of a good work is perseverance.

℟. Because of truth, and meekness, and righteousness;

Ye have listened carefully to the Gospel while it was being read, so that the thing told hath, as it were, passed before the eyes of your heart. Ye have seen in your mind's eye, albeit not with bodily sight, the Lord Jesus Christ sitting down to meat in the Pharisee's house, and not refusing when He is bidden of him. Ye have seen also an infamous woman of the city, one of utterly bad character, a sinner, thrusting herself in an uninvited guest, to the banquet where her Healer was sitting, and seeking health at His hands with godly shamelessness; thrusting herself in eager for mercy, as though eager for the feast. She knew under what a disease she laboured, and she knew that He unto Whom she came was mighty to cure it.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. She openeth her mouth with wisdom, and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household
* And eateth not the bread of idleness.
℣. She tasteth and perceiveth that her merchandise is good. Her candle goeth not out by night.

Reading 8
She drew near therefore, not unto the Lord's Head, but unto His Feet. She that had so long walked the paths of sin betook her unto the Feet that went about doing good. She first poured forth heart-felt tears, and washed the Lord's Feet with the humble service of her acknowledgment, wiped them with her hair, kissed them, and anointed them. Her silence cried aloud, next in words but in manifested love. The Pharisee, who had desired the Lord Jesus Christ that He would eat with him, belonged to that class of proud men concerning whom the Prophet Isaiah saith people which say, Stand by thyself, come not near to me; for I am holier than thou. lxv. 5. When therefore he saw how this woman touched the Lord's Feet with her tears, her kisses, her hair, and her ointment, he spake within himself, saying This Man, if He were a Prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is, that toucheth Him; for she is a sinner.

Pharisee, that biddest and scornest the Lord! Thou invitest the Lord to meat, and thou knowest not Him That should have given thee to eat! Whence knowest thou that the Lord knoweth not who and what manner of woman this is, save from this, that she is allowed to draw near unto Him, and that He suffereth her to kiss His Feet, to wipe them, and to anoint them? Ought not an unclean woman to have been permitted to do these things to clean feet? If such a woman had drawn near to the feet of this Pharisee, he would have said to her what Isaiah putteth into the mouth of such Stand by thyself, come not near to me, for I am holier than thou. But she came unto the Lord unclean that she might go away cleansed, sick, that she might go away healed, with confession, that she might go away with thanksgiving.

A Ravénna il natale di sant'Apollinàre Vescovo, il quale, ordinato in Roma dall'Apostolo Piétro e mandato a Ravénna, sopportò per la fede di Cristo varie e molteplici pene; quindi, predicando il Vangelo nell'Emilia, ritrasse moltissimi dal culto degli idoli; finalmente, tornato a Ravénna, vi compì un glorioso martirio sotto Vespasiàno Césare.
A Le Mans, in Frància, san Libòrio, Vescovo e Confessore.
A Roma il natale di santa Brigida Vedova, la quale, dopo molti pellegrinaggi ai Luoghi Santi, ripiena dello Spirito divino si riposò.
La sua festa si celebra l'otto Ottobre.
Nello stesso luogo san Ràsifo Martire.
Così pure a Roma la passione di santa Primitiva, Vergine e Martire.

He was ordained at Rome by the Apostle Peter and sent to Ravenna, where he suffered diverse and manifold things for Christ's faith's sake. He afterwards preached the Gospel in Emilia, and turned many from the worshipping of idols. At length he came back to Ravenna, and there finished a glorious testimony under the Caesar Vespasian.
