Lettura 4
Giacomo, Galileo, figlio di Zebedeo e fratello germano dell'Apostolo Giovanni, chiamato col fratello tra i primi Apostoli, abbandonò il padre e le reti per seguire il Signore, e tutti due furono chiamati dallo stesso Gesù Boanerges, cioè figli del tuono. Egli fu uno dei tre Apostoli, che il Salvatore amò di più, e che volle avere come testimoni della sua trasfigurazione, del miracolo che fece allorché risuscitò la figlia del capo della sinagoga, e quando si ritirò sul monte degli Olivi per pregare il Padre, prima d'essere preso dai Giudei.

℟. Vidi degli uomini riuniti, che avevano splendide vesti, e un angelo del Signore si rivolse a me con queste parole:

Lettura 5
Dopo l'ascensione di Gesù al cielo, egli predicò la sua divinità nella Giudea e nella Samaria, convertendo moltissimi alla fede cristiana. Partito poi per la Spagna, vi convertì alcuni a Cristo; di questi in seguito san Pietro ne ordinò sette vescovi e li inviò per primi in Spagna. Quindi ritornato a Gerusalemme, avendo guadagnato, fra gli altri, alla verità della fede il mago Ermogene, e proclamando liberamente la divinità di Gesù Cristo, Erode Agrippa, divenuto re sotto l'imperatore Claudio, per conciliarsi i Giudei, condannò Giacomo alla pena capitale. Colui che l'aveva condotto al tribunale, vedendo il coraggio col quale andava al martirio, si dichiarò cristiano anche lui.

℟. Beati voi, quando vi oltraggeranno e perseguiteranno e, mentendo, diranno di voi ogni male per causa mia:

Mentre venivano portati al supplizio, egli chiese perdono a Giacomo; e Giacomo, baciandolo: «La pace sia con te» gli disse. Pertanto vennero tutti due decapitati; poco prima Giacomo aveva guarito un paralitico. Il suo corpo fu poi trasportato a Compostella, dove è in sommo onore, accorrendovi pellegrini da tutte le parti del mondo per motivo di pietà e di voti. Per celebrare la memoria del suo natale, la Chiesa ha scelto quest'oggi, ch'è il giorno della sua traslazione, perché fu verso la festa di Pasqua ch'egli, primo degli Apostoli, rese testimonianza a Gesù Cristo con l'effusione del suo sangue a Gerusalemme.

Nessuno si conturbi, se diciamo che gli Apostoli erano ancora tanto imperfetti; poiché il mistero della croce non era stato ancora consumato, né era stata ancora infusa nei loro cuori la grazia dello Spirito. Che se desideri conoscere la loro virtù, considera quali furono dopo ricevuta la grazia dello Spirito, e vedrai ch'essi superarono ogni malvagia inclinazione. Ed è per questo che si rivela ora la loro imperfezione, perché tu possa apprezzare meglio come furono d'un colpo trasformati dalla grazia. Ch'essi non abbiano chiesto nulla di spirituale, né abbiano avuto alcun pensiero del regno celeste, è evidente. Tuttavia esaminiamo come s'accostano, e che cosa gli dicano: «Vogliamo, dicono, che tu ci conceda quanto ti domanderemo» Marc. 10, 35. Al che Cristo risponde: « he volete?» non ignorandolo, certo, ma per obbligarli a spiegarsi, affine di scoprire la piaga e applicarvi così il rimedio.

Ma essi, arrossendo per la vergogna e confusi d'essere scesi a sentimenti umani, preso Cristo in disparte, gli fanno la domanda di nascosto dagli altri discepoli. Difatti essi camminarono avanti agli altri, dice (l'Evangelista), per non essere intesi; e così espressero finalmente ciò che volevano . E volevano ottenere, com'io presumo, che, avendo udito come i discepoli si sarebbero assisi su dodici troni, occupassero essi i primi di questi troni: giacché sapevano certo di essere amati più degli altri; ma temendo che Pietro fosse loro preferito, osarono dire: «Ordina che seggano uno alla tua destra e l'altro alla sinistra» Matth. 20, 22. E insistono dicendo: «Ordina». Ed egli che risponde? Per far intendere loro che non domandavano nulla di spirituale, e che non sapevano neppure cosa si domandassero, poiché non avrebbero osato domandarlo se l'avessero saputo: «Non sapete, dice, quel che domandate» Matth. 20, 22: non sapete quanto ciò sia grande, quanto meraviglioso, eccedente persino le più alte virtù del cielo.

E aggiunse: «Potete voi bere il calice che berrò io, e battezzarvi col battesimo onde son battezzato io?» Matth. 20, 22. Nota come li rimuove subito da questa speranza, ragionando loro di cose affatto opposte. Voi, dice, mi parlate di onori e di corone; e io vi parlo di lotte e di sudori. Non è questo il tempo delle ricompense, né cotesta mia gloria si manifesterà ora; adesso è tempo di persecuzione e di pericoli. Osserva poi come colla stessa interrogazione li esorta e alletta. Poiché non disse: Potete sostenere i cattivi trattamenti, potete versare il vostro sangue? ma solamente: «Potete voi bere il calice?». E per attirarli soggiunge: «Che berrò io?» affin di disporli meglio a soffrire colla stessa prospettiva di partecipare alle sue sofferenze.

James, the Son of Zebedee and brother of the Apostle John, was a Galilean, and with his brother one of the first of His Apostles whom the Lord called, whileas they were in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets and they immediately left the ship, and their father, and followed Him. Matth. iv. 21, 22. And He surnamed them Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder. Mark iii. 17. Peter, and James, and John, were the three Apostles whom the Saviour loved best; them He took and brought up into an high mountain apart, and was transfigured before them, Matth. xvii. 1,2; when He went to the house of the ruler of the synagogue to raise his daughter from the dead, He suffered no man to follow Him save Peter, and James, and John, Mark v. 37; and, at the last, just before the Jews took Him, when He cometh unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples: Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee. Matth. xxvi. 36, 37.

Reading 5
After that Jesus Christ was ascended into heaven, James preached how that He was God, and led many in Judaea and Samaria to the Christian Faith. A while afterward, he went to Spain, and there he brought some to Christ, of whom seven were afterwards ordained Bishops by Blessed Peter, and were the first such sent into that country. From Spain James went back to Jerusalem, where he taught the Faith to diverse persons, and, among others, to the Magician Hermogenes. Thereupon Herod Agrippa, who had been raised to the kingdom under the Emperor Claudius, to curry favour with the Jews, condemned James to death for his firm confession that Jesus Christ is God. The officer who led James to the judgment-seat, at sight of the courage wherewith he was ready to offer up his testimony, declared himself also to be a Christian.

Reading 6
As they were being hurried to execution, this man asked pardon of James, and the Apostle kissed him, saying, Peace be unto thee. James healed a paralytic, and immediately afterwards both the prisoners were beheaded. The body of the Apostle was afterwards taken to Compostella, (in the province of Galicia, in Spain,) where his grave is very famous. Multitudes of pilgrims from all parts of the earth betake themselves thither to pray, out of sheer piety or in fulfilment of vows. The Birthday of James is kept by the Church upon this day, which is that of the bringing of his body to Compostella. It was about Easter-time Acts xii. 2-4 that he bore witness to Jesus Christ with his blood, at Jerusalem, being the first of the Apostles to do so.

Let no man be troubled if we say that the Apostles were still imperfect, for the mystery of the Cross was not yet finished, the grace of the Spirit had not yet been shed abroad in their hearts. If thou wilt behold them in their strength, consider them such as they became after the grace of the Spirit was given them, and thou wilt perceive that they had trodden under foot every vain desire. This is the cause wherefore their present imperfection is made known unto us, that is, that thou mayest see how great a change could be forthwith wrought by grace. But nevertheless let us now look how they came unto Christ, and what they said. Master, they said, we would that Thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire. Mark x. 35. And He said unto them: What would ye that I should do for you? Mark X. 36. not, surely, that He knew not what their wish was, but that He would make them answer, and so uncover the wound, to lay a plaster upon it.

Transito di sant'Anna, che fu Madre della Immacolata Vergine Maria Madre di Dio.
A Filippi, nella Macedonia, il natale di sant'Eràsto, il quale, lasciato ivi come Vescovo dal beato Pàolo Apostolo, nel medesimo luogo fu coronato col martirio.
A Roma, sulla via Latina, i santi Martiri Sinfrónio, Olimpio, Teódolo ed Esupéria, i quali (come si legge negli Atti di santo Stéfano Papa), arsi col fuoco, conseguirono la palma del martirio.
A Porto Romàno san Giacinto Martire, il quale, prima gettato nel fuoco, quindi precipitato nel fiume, rimase illeso; poi, sotto l'Imperatore Traiàno, percosso colla spada dal Consolare Leonzio, finì la vita. Il suo corpo dalla matrona Giulia fu sepolto in un suo podere, vicino a Roma.

Martyrology {anticipated}
July 26th 2026, the 11th day of the Moon, fell asleep

Holy Anne, mother of Mary the Mother of God.
On the same 26th day of July, was also born into the better life: At Philippi, in Macedonia, holy Erastus, who was left there as Bishop by the blessed Apostle Paul, and was there crowned with martyrdom.
At Rome, upon the Latin Way, the holy martyrs Symphronius, Olympius, Theodulus, and Exuperia, who, as is written in the Acts of the holy Pope Stephen I, were burnt in the fire, and so gained the palm of martyrdom.
At Porto Romano, the holy martyr Hyacinth. He was first cast into the fire, and then into a torrent, but escaped unhurt. Afterwards, under the Emperor Trajan, Leontius the Consular caused him to be smitten with the sword, and so ended his earthly life. The matron Julia buried his body upon her own farm hard by the city of Rome.
Also at Rome, [in the second century,] the holy Priest Pastor, who giveth his name to the Church upon the Viminal Hill, which is that of holy Pudentiana.
At Verona, [in the sixth century,] the holy Confessor Valens, Bishop [of that see.]
