Ci si propone il talamo di Anna siccome doppio tipo ad un tempo di vita coniugale nella madre e di verginità nella figlia: delle quali l'una fu liberata da poco dalla sterilità, l'altra darà tosto alla luce in modo soprannaturale il Cristo formato per operazione divina simile a noi. A ragione dunque Anna, ripiena di Spirito Santo, con animo lieto e giulivo canta: Rallegratevi con me, che, sebbene sterile, ho dato alla luce il germe promessomi, e nutro col mio latte, come avevo desiderato, il frutto della benedizione. Ho smesso il duolo della sterilità, ed ho indossato l'abito della festa della fecondità. Si rallegri con me oggi Anna, la rivale di Fenenna, e celebri col suo esempio questo nuovo e sì inatteso prodigio operatosi in me.

Tutte le madri che hanno avuto la gioia della maternità dicano anch'esse: Benedetto colui che ha concesso ai suoi servi ciò che domandavano, rendendo feconda una sterile, e dandole questo incomparabile frutto d'una Vergine divenuta Madre di Dio secondo la carne, il seno della quale è un cielo in cui dimorò colui che nessun luogo può contenere. Uniamo anche noi la nostra voce alla loro per offrire lodi a colei che era detta sterile, ed ora è madre d'una vergine madre. Diciamole colla Scrittura: «Beata la casa di David donde sei uscita, ed il seno in cui Dio fabbricò la sua arca di santificazione, ossia colei da cui egli venne concepito senza concorso di uomo».

Il regno dei cieli, fratelli carissimi, si dice simile a cose terrene, affinché l'anima si elevi da ciò che conosce a ciò che non conosce affatto, così che dall'esempio delle cose visibili si sollevi alle invisibili, e come incitata da ciò che ha appreso, s'infiammi a tal punto da imparare ad amare, per mezzo dell'affetto per un bene conosciuto, anche beni sconosciuti. Ecco dunque che il regno dei cieli si paragona ad un tesoro nascosto in un campo. L uomo che l'ha trovato, lo tiene nascosto e, per la gioia di possederlo, va a vendere tutto ciò che possiede e compra quel campo.

Ed in ciò si deve anche notare che il tesoro trovato viene nascosto perché sia conservato: poiché non riuscirà a difendere dagli spiriti maligni l'ardore del desiderio che sente per il cielo, colui che non lo sottrae alle umane lodi. Infatti nella vita presente ci troviamo come in una via, lungo la quale ci dirigiamo alla patria. Gli spiriti maligni ci tendono insidie lungo la strada, come ladruncoli. Portare dunque pubblicamente un tesoro per via è come desiderare di essere derubati. Ora io dico questo, non perché il prossimo non veda le nostre opere buone, poiché sta scritto: «Vedano le vostre opere buone e glorifichino il Padre vostro che è nei cieli»; ma perché non cerchiamo lodi dall'esterno per quello che facciamo. L'opera quindi sia pure pubblica, ma rimanga occulta l'intenzione; affinché noi possiamo dare al prossimo l'esempio di un'opera buona, e tuttavia con l'intenzione, per la quale cerchiamo di piacere soltanto a Dio, desideriamo sempre il segreto.

Che il Signore, piangendo, abbia predetto la distruzione di Gerusalemme, che fu compiuta da Vespasiano e Tito imperatori Romani, nessuno, che abbia letto la storia di questa stessa distruzione, l'ignora. Difatti gl'imperatori Romani sono indicati con queste parole: «Perché verranno per te dei giorni che i tuoi nemici ti circonderanno di trincee» Luc. 19,43. 2nd on the Birth of the Blessed Virgin
The home of Anne is set before us, wherein to see an example both of married and of maiden life, the one in the person of the mother, the other in that of the daughter, whereof the one hath but now ceased to be barren, and the other is in a little while destined, beyond the course of nature, to become the Mother of the Messiah by a singular birth, specially designed by God to build up anew our nature. It is with reason then that Anne, filled with the Holy Ghost, with joyful and jubilant spirit singeth aloud: Rejoice with me, for out of my barren womb I have borne the bud of promise, and, as I have longed, I nourish at my breasts the fruit of benediction. I have laid aside the mournful garments of barrenness, and put on the joyful raiment of fruitfulness. Let Hannah the adversary of Peninnah make merry with me, and join with me for fellow-feeling, in singing of this new and unhoped-for wonder that is wrought in me.

Dearly beloved brethren, the kingdom of heaven is likened unto the things of earth, to the end that by the mean of things which we know, our mind may rise to the contemplation of the things which we know not by the example of things which are seen, may fix her gaze on things which are not seen by the touch of things which she useth, may be warmed towards the things which she useth not; by things which she knoweth and loveth, to love also the things which she knoweth not. For, behold, “the kingdom of heaven is likened unto treasure hid in a field, the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and, for joy thereof, goeth and selleth all that he hath and buyeth that field.”
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. She openeth her mouth with wisdom, and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household

And herein we must remark that the treasure, when once it hath been found, is hidden to keep it safe. He whose intimate yearnings after God are not hidden from the praise of men, is open thereby to the attacks of evil spirits. In this life we are, as it were, journeying homewards on a road beset by evil spirits who are like highwaymen. He therefore inviteth robbery who carrieth his treasure ostentatiously. Doubtless our neighbour should be able to see our good works, as it is written: “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” But this is not to be understood to mean that we are to seek the praise of men by what we do. Rather, let us in such wise work in the open that the inner intention of devotion is not advertised. So we shall give an example to our neighbour, and yet keep hidden, except from the sight of God, our purpose of pleasing him.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

℟. The kingdom of this world and all the beauty of life I have esteemed as nothing, for the excellency of the love of Jesus Christ my Lord

No man that hath read the history of the destruction of Jerusalem by the Roman Princes Vespasian and Titus, can be ignorant that it was of that destruction that the Lord spoke when He wept over the ruin of the city. It is these Princes that are pointed at where it is said “For the days shall come upon thee that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee.” The truth of what followeth: “They shall not leave in thee one stone upon another” is even now fulfilled in the change of site of the city, which hath been re-built round about that place without the gates, where the Lord was crucified, while the ancient city hath been, as I am told, rooted up from the very foundations.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Martirologio {anticipated}

A Nicomédia la passione di san Pantaleóne medico, il quale, per la fede di Cristo, dall'Imperatore Massimiano fu preso e straziato colla pena dell'eculeo e con fiaccole accese, ma in mezzo a queste pene fu confortato da un'apparizione del Signore, e finalmente, percosso colla spada, compì il martirio.
A Biscéglie, nelle Puglie, i santi Martiri Màuro Vescovo, Pantaleémone e Sérgio, che patirono sotto Traiàno.
A Nicomédia sant'Ermolao Prete, per la cui dottrina il beato Pantaleóne si convertì alla fede; e così pure i santi Ermippo ed Ermócrate fratelli, i quali, dopo molte pene loro inflitte, dall'Imperatore Massimiàno furono puniti, per la confessione di Cristo, con sentenza capitale.
A Córdova, nella Spagna, i santi Martiri Giórgio Diacono, Aurélio e sua moglie Natàlia, Felice e sua moglie Liliósa, nella persecuzione degli Arabi.
A Nola, nella Campania, i santi Martiri Felice, Giulia e Giocónda.

A Costantinópoli la beata Antusa Vergine, la quale, sotto Costantino Coprónimo, per il culto delle sante immagini, battuta con flagelli e mandata in esilio, si riposò nel Signore.

He was a physician, who was tried by the Emperor Maximian because he believed in Christ, and tormented on the rack, and by scorching with lamps, amid the which things he was comforted by the Lord appearing to him. At last he finished his testimony by the sword.
Also at Nicomedia, the holy Priest Hermolaus, by whose teaching blessed Pantaleon was brought to the faith.
Also, the holy brethren Hermippus and Hermocrates, who, after many sufferings, were put to death by Maximian for confessing Christ.
