Lettura 4
Nazario, battezzato da Papa san Lino, passato nelle Gallie, vi battezzò il giovanetto Celso, che aveva prima istruito nei precetti cristiani. Andati poi insieme a Treveri, durante la persecuzione di Nerone furono gettati tutti due nel mare, ma ne uscirono miracolosamente. Giunti poscia a Milano, siccome vi diffondevano la fede cristiana e confessavano colla più grande costanza la divinità di Cristo, il prefetto Anolino li fece decapitare: i loro corpi furono sepolti fuori porta Romana. Rimastivi nascosti per lungo tempo, furono scoperti da sant'Ambrogio, dietro celeste indicazione, recanti ancora le tracce di sangue così vermiglio, come se avessero sofferto il martirio proprio allora; donde, trasferiti in città, furono rinchiusi in un sepolcro onorevole.

Vittore, nato in Africa, governò la Chiesa sotto l'imperatore Severo. Egli confermò il decreto di Pio I circa la celebrazione della Pasqua in Domenica: e perché questa legge fosse messa in pratica, si tennero dei concilii in molti luoghi; e il primo sinodo di Nicea stabilì infine, che la festa di Pasqua si celebrasse dopo la quattordicesima luna, affinché i Cristiani non sembrassero imitare i Giudei. Egli decise che in caso di necessità uno potesse essere battezzato con qualsiasi acqua, purché naturale. Cacciò dalla Chiesa il Curiato Bizantino Teodoreto, che pretendeva che Cristo non era stato che un uomo. Egli scrisse sulla questione della Pasqua, e alcuni altri opuscoli. In due ordinazioni nel mese di Dicembre creò quattro preti, sette diaconi e dodici vescovi per luoghi diversi. Coronato del martirio, fu sepolto al Vaticano il 28 Luglio. Governò nove anni, un mese e ventotto giorni.

Innocenzo di Albano, fiorì al tempo di san Girolamo e di sant'Agostino. Di lui il primo dice alla Vergine Demetria: Custodisci la fede di san Innocenzo che siede sulla cattedra apostolica ed è successore e figlio spirituale di Anastasio, di felice memoria, né ricevere altra dottrina per quanto saggia e seducente ti possa parere. Orosio scrive essere egli stato preservato dalla divina provvidenza come il giusto Lot e condotto al sicuro a Ravenna, perché non vedesse l'eccidio del popolo Romano. Egli, dopo aver condannato Pelagio e Celestio, decretò espressamente contro la loro eresia, che i bambini, anche nati da una cristiana, dovessero essere rigenerati per mezzo del battesimo; affinché fossero per questa rigenerazione spirituale purificati dalle macchie contratte nella generazione naturale. Approvò ancora il digiuno del Sabato in memoria della sepoltura del Signore. Governò quindici anni, un mese e dieci giorni. In quattro ordinazioni, nel mese di Dicembre, creò trenta preti, quindici diaconi e cinquantaquattro vescovi per luoghi diversi. Fu sepolto nel cimitero chiamato di Ursum pileatum.

Omelia 35 sui Vangeli.
Il Signore e Redentore nostro annunzia i mali che precederanno la fine del mondo affinché, quando essi verranno, tanto meno perturbino quanto più saranno stati conosciuti prima. Infatti le frecce che sì prevedono feriscono meno; e i mali del mondo ci sembrano più tollerabili quando la previsione ci premunisce contro di essi, come uno scudo. Ecco dunque quello che dice: «Quando sentirete parlare di guerre e sommosse, non vi spaventate; bisogna che prima avvengano queste cose, ma la fine non verrà subito dopo». È necessario ponderare le parole del nostro Redentore, con le quali egli ci annunzia che dobbiamo patire sia all'esterno che all'interno. Le guerre infatti vengono fatte dai nemici, le sommosse dai cittadini. Per indicarci dunque che saremo turbati all'esterno e all'interno, ci dice che altro avremo a soffrire dai nemici e altro dai fratelli.

Però, dopo che si è parlato di tanti segni di perturbazione, è necessario prenderli brevemente in considerazione ad uno ad uno. Perché sta scritto che noi ne subiamo alcuni dal cielo, altri dalla terra, altri dagli elementi, altri dagli uomini. Dice infatti: «Si solleverà popolo contro popolo»: ecco lo scompiglio degli uomini; «vi saranno in diversi luoghi grandi terremoti»: ecco l'ira che verrà dall'alto; «vi saranno pestilenze»: ecco la perturbazione nei corpi; «vi saranno fame e carestia»: ecco la sterilità della terra; «e fenomeni spaventosi dal cielo e tempeste»: ecco l'instabilità dell'atmosfera. Poiché dunque tutto deve essere distrutto, prima della distruzione tutto sarà sconvolto; e noi, che in tutto abbiamo peccato, in ogni cosa saremo puniti, perché si avveri quanto è stato detto: «E con lui combatterà l'universo contro gli insensati».

Nazarius was baptized by the blessed Pope Linus, and afterwards went to Gaul. There he met with the boy Celsus, whom he instructed in the Christian law, and baptized. They went together to Trier, and, in the persecution under Nero, were both thrown into the sea, from which they had a marvellous escape. Later on, they came to Milan, where they spread the Faith of Christ, and as they remained firm in declaring that He is God, the Prsefect Anolinus had them beheaded. Their bodies were buried outside the Roman gate, and lay long unknown, till, by a revelation from God, Blessed Ambrose found them, smeared with fresh blood, as though they had only a short time undergone martyrdom. They were taken up from thence, carried into the city, and laid in an honourable sepulchre.

Reading 5
Victor was by birth an African, and governed the Church in the time of the Emperor Severus. He confirmed the decree of Pius I that the Holy Passover should be kept upon the Lord's Day. To bring this rule into use, Councils were held in many places, and in the First Synod of Nice it was decided that the Holy Passover Day should be kept after the 14th day of the month (Nisan), lest the Christians should seem to be copying the Jews. Victor decided that if need be, baptism can be administered with any water, as long as it be natural. He cast out of the Church Theodotus the tanner, of Constantinople, who taught that Christ was nothing but a man. He wrote upon the subject of the Passover, and some other small works. He held two Ordinations in the month of December, wherein he ordained four Priests, seven Deacons, and twelve Bishops for diverse places. He received the crown of his testimony, and was buried at the Vatican on the 28th day of July, in the year of our Lord 197. He sat in the throne of Peter nine years, one month, and twenty-eight days.

Innocent of Albano flourished in the time of St. Jerome and St. Augustine. Concerning him, St. Jerome saith, writing to Demetrias: Keep firm hold on the faith of holy Innocent, who is the heir and the child of the Apostolic See, and of Anastasius of blessed memory, and receive not any strange doctrine, how wise and acute soever thou mayest count thyself. Orosius writeth that God kept Innocent at Ravenna that he might not see the destruction of the Roman people, even as righteous Lot was withdrawn by God's Providence (from being at the burning of Sodom.) He condemned Pelagius and Caelestius, and made a decree against their heresy, that little children, even those whose mother was a Christian, must be born again in baptism, that the new birth may wash away in them the stain which they have contracted in their conception. He approved also that a Fast should be kept upon Saturday in memory of the Lord Christ's lying in the grave on that day. He sat in the throne of Peter fifteen years, one month, and ten days. He held four Ordinations in the month of December, and made therein thirty Priests, fifteen Deacons, and forty-four Bishops for diverse places. He was buried in the Bearand-Cap Cemetery, upon the 28th of July, in the year 417.

Our Lord and Redeemer willeth us to know what shall be the signs that the end of the world is at hand, to the end that ye may be the less terrified, when that cometh whereof ye have already had warning. Darts strike less which are seen coming: and the plagues of the earth will be to us more bearable, if we are harnessed against them with the shield of foreknowledge. Behold, how He saith When ye shall hear of wars and commotions be not terrified for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by. It behoveth us to ponder these words of our Redeemer, wherein He warneth us of suffering, from without, and from within. Wars are the work of a foreign enemy, commotions of the citizens. Therefore, that He may let us know that we shall be troubled from within and from without, He showeth that our wrestling shall be in part against strangers, and in part against our brethren.

A Tarascóna, nella Gallia Narbonése, santa Marta Vergine, sorella dei beati Làzzaro e Maria Maddaléna, la quale ospitò nella sua casa Nostro Signore.
A Roma, sulla via Aurélia, san Felice secondo, Papa e Martire, il quale dall'Ariano Imperatore Costanzo fu scacciato dalla sua sede per aver difeso la fede cattolica, e occultamente ucciso colla spada a Cervéteri, nella Toscana, morì gloriosamente. Il suo corpo di là rapito dai Chierici, fu sepolto sulla medesima via, ma poi, trasferito alla chiesa dei santi Cosma e Damiàno, ivi, al tempo del Sommo Pontefice Gregorio decimoterzo, fu ritrovato sotto l'altare, insieme colle reliquie dei santi Martiri Marco, Marcelliàno e Tranquillino, e nel medesimo luogo fu insieme con essi riposto il trentuno Luglio.
Sotto il medesimo altare furono trovati anche i corpi dei santi Martiri Abbóndio Prete ed Abbondànzio Diacono, i quali, non molto dopo, furono solennemente trasferiti alla chiesa della Compagnia di Gesù il giorno avanti il loro natalizio.
Così pure a Roma, sulla via Portuénse, i santi Martiri Simplicio, Faustino e Beatrice, al tempo dell'Imperatore Diocleziàno. Di questi i primi due, dopo molti e diversi supplizi, furono fatti uccidere; Beatrice poi, loro sorella, nella confessione di Cristo fu strangolata in carcere.
A Roma inoltre i santi Martiri Lucilla e Flora Vergini, Eugénio, Antonino, Teodóro e diciotto Compagni, i quali subirono il martirio sotto l'Imperatore Galliéno.
Così pure a Roma santa Seràpia Vergine, la quale, sotto il Principe Adriano, essendo stata consegnata a due giovani disonesti, e non avendo affatto potuto essere da essi violata, nè in seguito essere bruciata con fiaccole ardenti, per comando del Giudice Derillo, fu percossa con bastoni, e quindi decollata con la spada. Il suo corpo fu sepolto dalla beata Sabina nel suo monumento, vicino al cimitero Vindiciàno; ma la memoria del suo martirio si celebra più solennemente il tre Settembre, giorno nel quale fu ivi eretto ed ornato il sarcofago di ambedue, e vi fu degnamente consacrato un oratorio.

Martyrology {anticipated}
July 29th 2026, the 14th day of the Moon, was born into the better life:

At Tarascon, in Gaul, the holy Virgin Martha, the hostess of our Saviour, and the sister of blessed Mary Magdalene and of holy Lazarus.
On the same day is commemorated at Rome, upon the Aurelian Way, the holy martyr Pope Felix II, who was expelled from his See by the Arian Emperor Constantius because of his defense of the Catholic faith, and who fell gloriously, secretly murdered with the sword, at Cera, in Tuscany. [Concerning Felix there has been much dispute. The Missal and Breviary, by suppressing the title of Pope or Bishop (always given in such cases), seem to confirm the view now generally adopted by historians, viz., that he was an African martyr, who suffered on November 10, and whose relics were brought to Rome on July 29 but the Martyrology retains another theory, now generally rejected, which identifies this Saint with one Felix, intruded into the See of Rome by Constantius during the Pontificate of Liberius, and now commonly regarded as an Anti-Pope of very dubious orthodoxy.] His body was brought thence by clerks and buried upon the aforesaid Way, whence it was afterwards taken to the church of SS. Cosmas and Damian, where it was found under the altar in the time of the Supreme Pontiff Gregory XIII, along with the relics of the holy martyrs Mark, Marcellian, and Tranquillinus, along with which it was again buried in the same spot upon the last day of July.
Under the same altar were also found the bodies of the holy martyrs Abundius the Priest and Abundantius the Deacon, which not long after were solemnly taken to the church of the Society of Jesus, upon the eve of their birthday into the better life.
At Rome, on the Way to Porto, in the time of the Emperor Diocletian, the holy martyrs Simplicius, Faustinus, and Beatrix. Simplicius and Faustinus were beheaded, after many and diverse torments, and their sister Beatrix was strangled in prison, for confessing Christ.
Likewise at Rome, the holy martyrs the Virgins Lucilla and Flora, Eugene, Antonine, Theodore, and eighteen others their Companions, who suffered martyrdom under the Emperor Gallienus.
At Gangra, in Paphlagonia, the holy martyr Callinicus, who was first beaten with iron rods and tormented in other and diverse ways, and at length cast into a furnace, and so resigned his spirit to God.
In Norway, [in the year 1030,] the holy martyr King Olaf II.
At Troyes, in Gaul, [in the fifth century,] the holy Confessor Lupus, Bishop [of that See,] who went into Britain along with blessed German to rid that country of the Pelagian heresy, and who by his unceasing prayers delivered the city of Troyes from the fury of Attila when he was wasting all Gaul, and at length fell asleep in peace, after having performed the office of the Priesthood with worship for two and fifty years.

41:4 Fuérunt mihi lácrimæ meæ panes die ac nocte: * dum dícitur mihi quotídie: Ubi est Deus tuus?
41:5 Hæc recordátus sum, et effúdi in me ánimam meam: * quóniam transíbo in locum tabernáculi admirábilis, usque ad domum Dei.
