3 E vedendo che ciò piaceva ai Giudei, procedé anche all'arresto di Pietro. Erano i giorni degli azimi.
4 E fattolo catturare, lo mise in prigione, dandolo in guardia a quattro picchetti, di quattro soldati ciascuno, volendo dopo la Pasqua processarlo davanti al popolo.
5 Pietro dunque era custodito nella prigione. Ma dalla Chiesa si faceva continua orazione a Dio per lui.

Sotto l'imperatore Teodosio il giovane, Eudossia, sua sposa, essendo andata a Gerusalemme per sciogliere un voto, vi fu colmata di numerosi doni. Il più prezioso di tutti fu il dono della catena di ferro, ornata d'oro e di gemme, colla quale si affermava essere stato legato l'Apostolo Pietro da Erode. Eudossia, dopo aver venerato piamente detta catena, l'inviò in seguito a Roma, alla figlia Eudossia, che la portò al sommo Pontefice. Questi a sua volta glie ne mostrò un'altra colla quale lo stesso Apostolo era stato legato sotto Nerone.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Signore, se sei tu, comandami di venire a te sulle acque.
* E stesa la mano, Gesù lo prese e gli disse: Uomo di poca fede, perché hai dubitato?

Mentre dunque il Pontefice confrontava la catena conservata a Roma con quella portata da Gerusalemme, avvenne ch'esse si unirono talmente da sembrare non due, ma una catena sola fatta dallo stesso artefice. Da questo miracolo si cominciò ad avere tanto onore per queste sacre catene , che la chiesa del titolo d'Eudossia all'Esquilino venne perciò dedicata sotto il nome di san Pietro in Vincoli, in memoria di che fu istituita una festa al 1° Agosto.

℟. Lèvati su, Pietro, buttati addosso il tuo mantello, ricevi il potere di salvare le Genti;

Da questo momento, gli onori che usavasi tributare in questo giorno alle solennità dei Gentili, si cominciò a darli alle catene di Pietro, il contatto delle quali guariva i malati e scacciava i demoni. Il che avvenne nell'anno dell'umana salute 969 a un certo conte, famigliare dell'imperatore Ottone , il quale essendo posseduto dallo spirito immondo, si lacerava coi proprii denti. Condotto per ordine dell'imperatore dal Pontefice Giovanni, non appena le sante catene n'ebbero toccato il collo, il maligno spirito se ne fuggì all'istante lasciando libero l'uomo: dopo di che la devozione alle sante catene si diffuse in Roma sempre più.

Pietro è il solo degli Apostoli che meritò di udire: «In verità ti dico che tu sei Pietro, e su questa pietra io edificherò la mia Chiesa» Matth. 16,18; degno certo d'essere, per i popoli di cui sarebbesi formata la casa di Dio, la pietra fondamentale, la colonna di sostegno, la chiave del regno. Così leggiamo nel sacro testo: «E mettevano fuori, dice, i loro infermi, affinché, quando Pietro passava, almeno l'ombra sua ne coprisse qualcuno» Act. 5,15. Se allora l'ombra del suo corpo poteva portare soccorso, quanto più ora la pienezza del suo potere? se, mentr'era sulla terra, si sprigionava al suo passaggio tal fluido salutare per i supplicanti, quanta maggior influenza non eserciterà ora ch'è nel cielo? Giustamente dunque in tutte le chiese cristiane si ritiene più prezioso dell'oro il ferro delle catene onde egli fu legato.

Se fu sì salutare l'ombra del suo passaggio, quanto più la catena della sua prigionia? Se la fuggitiva apparenza d'una vana immagine poté avere in sé la proprietà di guarire, quanta maggior virtù non meritarono d'attrarre dal suo corpo le catene onde egli soffrì e che il peso impresse nelle sacre membra? S'egli a sollievo dei supplicanti fu tanto potente prima del martirio, quanto più efficace non sarà dopo il trionfo? Benedette catene, che, da manette e ceppi dovevano poi cambiarsi in corona, e che toccando l'Apostolo, lo resero così Martire! Benedette catene, che menarono il loro reo fino alla croce di Cristo, più per immortalarlo, che per farlo morire!

Discorso 20 sui Maccabei
Che dire dei Maccabei? Per celebrare la festa consacrata alla loro memoria tanta affluenza quest'oggi. Benché il loro culto non sia stabilito in certi luoghi, perché essi non sostennero il loro combattimento dopo la venuta di Cristo; tuttavia meritano d'essere onorati da tutti per la generosità e costanza che mostrarono nella osservanza delle leggi e dei costumi dei loro antenati. Poiché se essi subirono il martirio prima della passione di Cristo, che non avrebbero fatto se fossero stati perseguitati dopo Cristo, coll'esempio della morte ch'egli ebbe a soffrire per la nostra salute? Se tale e tanta fu la loro virtù, nella assenza d'ogni modello, con quanto più ardore non sarebbero scesi a combattere, se avessero avuto davanti un simile esempio? Oltre ciò c'è una ragione intima e misteriosa, e certo assai probabile per me e per quanti amano Dio, che cioè nessuno di quelli che subirono il martirio prima della venuta di Cristo, non poterono conseguirlo che per la fede in Cristo.

Among other things, they gave her in especial an iron chain, adorned with gold and precious stones, which they affirmed to be the same wherewith the Apostle Peter had been bound by King Herod. Eudocia, with godly reverence, afterwards sent this chain to Rome, to her daughter Eudoxia, who brought it to the Pope, and the Pope in return showed to her another chain wherewith the same Apostle had been shackled under the Emperor Nero.

When then the Pope put together the Roman chain and that which had been brought from Jerusalem, it came to pass that they got so entangled the one with the other that they seemed no longer two but one chain. From this wonder these holy fetters began to receive such honour, that Eudoxia's Church of St. Peter on the Esquiline Mount was dedicated under the name of St. Peter in Chains, and a Feast - Day instituted upon the first day of August in memory of it.

From that time forth the honour which before had used to be paid to the profane festivity of the Gentiles, (held in memory of the dedication of the temple of Mars, and of the birth of Claudius,) began to be turned to the Chains of Peter, whose very touch healed the sick, and drove out devils. Among other such cases there befell in the year of man's Redemption 969, that of a certain Count, a servant of the Emperor Otho, who was possessed by an unclean spirit, and tore himself with his own teeth. This man the Emperor ordered to be taken to Pope John, and as soon as he had touched the Count's neck with the hallowed chains, the foul spirit came out of him, and left him free. And thenceforward the reverence for these holy chains greatly increased in the City.

Peter was the only one of the Apostles who was worthy to hear the words Amen, I say unto thee that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build My Church. Worthy indeed must he be, who, when the nations are to be built up into a Temple of God, is chosen as the ground-stone whereon the building is to stand the pillar whereby it is to be held up, and the key wherethrough entrance is to be made into the kingdom. Concerning him the Word of God saith That they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them. Acts v. 15. If the shadow of his body then could give help, how much more shall the fulness of his strength give help now. If the very air, as he passed by, was then profitable to such as besought him, how much more shall his favour profit where now he abideth. It is with reason that, throughout all the Churches of Christ, the iron chains wherewith he was afflicted are reckoned more precious than gold.

If his shadow as a visitor was so healthful, what is his chain now that he bindeth and looseth. If his empty image in the air had healing power, how much power must have been contracted from his body by those chains, whose iron weight sank into his holy limbs during his suffering. If, before he testified, he was so mighty to aid them that called upon him, how much mightier is he now since his victory. Blessed were the links, doomed to be changed from fetters and shackles, into a crown, which by touching the Apostle, made him a Martyr. Blessed were the chains, whose prisoner left them for the Cross of Christ, and which brought him thither, not as the instruments of condemnation, but of sanctification.

A Nicéa, in Bitinia, la passione di santa Teódota, con tre suoi if gli. Il primogenito, per nome Evódio, confessando Cristo animosamente, da Nicézio, Consolare della Bitinia, fu fatto prima battere con bastoni; quindi la madre, con tutti i figli, fu fatta consumare col fuoco.
In Africa san Rutilio Martire, il quale, avendo spesso schivato la persecuzione, fuggendo da un luogo all'altro, ed essendosi talvolta liberato dal pericolo anche con denaro, fu preso finalmente alla sprovvista, e, presentato al Preside, venne afflitto con moltissimi tormenti: da ultimo, gettato nelle fiamme, fu coronato con un glorioso martirio.

Illustrious for the zeal for the salvation of souls shown both by his writings, his words, and his ensample. Pope Gregory XVI. enrolled his name with those of the Saints, and the Supreme Pontiff Pius IX. gave him the title of Doctor of the Church.
At Rome, in the cemetery of Callistus, [in the year 257,] the holy Pope and martyr Stephen. He was celebrating Mass during the persecution under the Emperor Valerian, when the soldiers broke in. He finished his office before the altar without fear or trembling, and then was beheaded as he sat upon his throne.

He had fled from one place to another in order to escape the persecution, and had sometimes bought himself out of danger, when he was unexpectedly arrested and brought before the President.
