«Il timore di Dio è il principio della sapienza» Ps. 110,10, dice il profeta. Ma che è il principio della sapienza se non rinunziare al secolo? Perché amare le cose del secolo, è stoltezza. Infatti, secondo l'Apostolo, «la sapienza di questo mondo è stoltezza presso Dio» 1Cor. 3,19. Ma lo stesso timore di Dio, se non è secondo la scienza, non serve a nulla, anzi nuoce moltissimo. Infatti i Giudei sono zelanti per Iddio; ma perché il loro zelo e timore non è secondo la scienza, essi dispiacciono ancor di più alla divinità. Il timor di Dio fa loro circoncidere i loro fanciulletti e osservare il sabato; ma perché ignorano che la legge è spirituale, essi praticano la circoncisione del corpo ma non quella del cuore.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Ma perché parlare dei Giudei? Ci sono anche fra noi che temono Dio, ma non secondo la scienza, poiché impongono degli obblighi più duri di quanto possa sopportare la debolezza umana. Il loro timore sta in questo, che si credono d'aver a cuore l'osservanza della legge e la pratica della virtù; ma l'ignoranza loro è in ciò che non sanno compatire alla fragilità della natura e apprezzare ciò che le è possibile. Non si deve dunque avere un timore disordinato. Perché se la vera sapienza comincia dal timor di Dio, né c'è sapienza spirituale senza timor di Dio, questo timore non dev'essere disgiunto dalla sapienza.

Un timore ben regolato è come la base alla parola divina. Come infatti una statua ha sempre un piedestallo, e questo piedestallo su cui poggia la statua le dà maggior grazia e le conferisce più solido appoggio: così la divina parola si trova stabilita meglio su un timore ben ordinato, più fortemente radicata nell'anima che teme il Signore; così che impedendo esso alla divina semenza di cadere dal cuore dell'uomo, gli uccelli non possono approfittare della sua incuria e negligenza per venire a rapirla.

Avesse almeno detto questo fariseo: Non sono come molti uomini. Che intende egli dicendo, «come gli altri uomini» Luc. 18,11, se non tutti, eccetto lui? Io sono giusto, dice egli, gli altri tutti peccatori. «Io non sono come gli altri uomini, ingiusti, rapaci, adulteri» (Ibi). Orgoglioso, eccoti, nella vicinanza d'un pubblicano, l'occasione di gonfiarti maggiormente: «Neppure, dice, come questo pubblicano» (Ibi). Io, dice, sono solo (giusto): questo e come tutti gli altri. Non sono, dice, come questo, e, per le mie opere di giustizia, grazie alle quali io non sono un peccatore.

Salito al tempio per pregare, non vuole domandare niente a Dio, e non fa che lodarsi. Non solo non prega Dio, ma si colma d'elogi; anzi giunge fino ad insultare colui che prega. «Il pubblicano invece si teneva in distanza» Luc. 18,13, e tutta via egli era vicino a Dio: la coscienza del suo cuore lo teneva in distanza, ma un sentimento di fede lo ravvicinava. Egli si teneva lontano, questo pubblicano, ma il Signore l'osservava da vicino.

Poiché eccelso è il Signore, eppure riguarda le umili cose; ma «i superbi» Ps. 137,13, come era quel fariseo, «li mira da lungi». Dio mira si da lungi i superbi, ma non li perdona. Ascolta ora ciò che si dice dell'umiltà del pubblicano. Non gli bastava di tenersi lontano: «non osava nemmeno alzare gli occhi al cielo» Luc. 18,13: per attirarsi gli sguardi (del Signore), non osava alzare gli occhi a lui; non osava guardare in alto: la sua coscienza l'opprimeva, ma la speranza to sollevava. Ascolta ancora . «Si batteva il petto». Si castigava da se stesso; perciò il Signore perdonava a quest'uomo penitente. «Si batteva il petto dicendo: Signore, abbi pietà di me peccatore». Ecco uno che prega. Che meraviglia che Dio non riconosca più in lui un peccatore quando lui stesso si considera peccatore?

The Prophet saith that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” And what is the first act of wisdom but to renounce the world since to love the things of the world is folly. So indeed saith the Apostle “The wisdom of this world is foolishness with God.” i Cor. iii. 19. But the very fear of the Lord itself is useless, nay, harmful, if it be not according to knowledge. The Jews have a truly fervent zeal for God, but since they have not knowledge, their very zeal and fear do cause them to do things contrary to God's will. That they circumcise their children, that they keep holy the Sabbath-Day, showeth how they fear the Lord, but knowing not the spiritual meaning of the Law, they circumcise the body and not the heart.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. Give me wisdom, O Lord, that sitteth by thy throne, and reject me not from among thy children.

He went up to pray, but his prayer was not a request of anything from God, but a glorification of himself. It was little enough not to pray to God, but he also glorified himself and despised his neighbour. But the publican stood afar off and yet drew nigh to God. Self-knowledge bade him keep at a distance, but his earnestness made him close. The publican stood afar off, but the Lord was at hand to hear him.

“Though the Lord be high, yet hath He respect unto the lowly” but the proud, such as was this Pharisee, “He knoweth afar off.” Ps. cxxxvii. 6. He knoweth the proud, all the same, but they are afar off from Him. Consider now the lowliness of the publican. It was not only that he stood afar off, but “he would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven”. He looked carefully, lest he should look up, he dared not to lift up his eyes unto heaven. Self-knowledge kept him down, though hope raised him up. Martyrology {anticipated}
August 3rd 2026, the 19th day of the Moon, is commemorated the finding at Jerusalem, [in the year 415,] of the body of the most blessed Stephen, the first of all the martyrs, and of those of holy Gamaliel, Nicodemus, and Abibon.
Their place was revealed by God to Lucian the Priest, in the time of the Emperor Honorius. [The body of St. Stephen now rests at Rome in the Basilica of St. Lawrence beyond the Walls.]

In India, upon the coasts of Persia, the holy Monks and others whom King Abenner, when he was persecuting the Church of God, caused to be tormented and slain in diverse ways.

At Anagni, [in the year 1105,] holy Peter, Bishop [of that see,] who fell asleep in the Lord, famous for his observance as a Monk first, and afterwards for his carefulness as a shepherd.
At Philippi, [in the year 60,] in Macedonia, holy Lydia, a seller of purple, who was the first of all to believe the Gospel there at the preaching of the holy Apostle Paul. [Acts xvi, 14]
