Lettura 4
I corpi dei santi Stefano Protomartire, Gamaliele, Nicodemo e Abibone rimasti nascosti per molto tempo in luogo oscuro e sordido, furono ritrovati presso Gerusalemme dal prete Luciano dietro divina rivelazione sotto l'imperatore Onorio. Gamaliele apparsogli in sogno sotto figura d'un vecchio grave e maestoso, gli mostrò il luogo ove giacevano i corpi, e gli ordinò di andare da Giovanni, vescovo di Gerusalemme, a trattare con lui perché quelle spoglie avessero una sepoltura onorevole.

℟. Mentre lo lapidavano Stefano pregava e diceva:

Il vescovo di Gerusalemme udito ciò, convocò i vescovi e i preti delle città vicine; e recatosi sul luogo, si scavò e si scoprirono le tombe, dalle quali esalava un soavissimo odore. Al rumore dell'avvenimento accorse gran folla, e molti fra essi ch'erano affetti da diverse malattie o deboli, ritornarono guariti alle loro case. Il sacro corpo di san Stefano, depositato colla più gran pompa nella santa chiesa di Sion, fu trasportato sotto Teodosio il giovine a Costantinopoli; e in seguito, sotto il sommo Pontefice Pelagio I, a Roma, nel campo Verano, e riposto nella tomba di san Lorenzo Martire.

Dal Libro di sant'Agostino Vescovo «Della Città di Dio»
Libro 22, cap. 8, verso la metà
Allorché il vescovo Projetto portò a Tibilis delle reliquie del gloriosissimo Martire Stefano, ci fu un gran concorso di gente al passaggio della sua urna. Fu allora che una donna cieca, avendo pregato d'essere condotta al vescovo che portava le sacre spoglie, presentò dei fiori che aveva seco perché toccassero le sacre reliquie; e, riavutili, se li accostò agli occhi, e tosto riebbe la vista. Con stupore dei presenti, ella si mise a camminare davanti, tutta festante, senza più bisogno di guida. Un'altra urna dello stesso Martire si conserva nel borgo di Sinise, presso il contado d'Ippona, e mentre Lucilio, vescovo del luogo, la portava preceduto e seguito dal popolo, fu subito guarito, in grazia di questo prezioso fardello, da una fistola che lo tormentava già da molto tempo, e ch'era per far aprire da un medico suo amico.

Libro 4 Comm. al capo 23 di Matteo
Queste parole: «Compite la misura dei vostri padri» che sopra abbiam detto riferirsi alla persona del Signore, perché doveva essere ucciso dai Giudei, possono anche riferirsi ai suoi discepoli, dei quali ora dice: «Ecco, io vi mando dei profeti e dei savi e degli scribi» Matth. 23,34. Osserva in pari tempo, come secondo che scrive l'Apostolo ai Corinti, sono diversi i doni attribuiti ai discepoli di. Cristo; gli uni sono profeti che predicono il futuro; altri sapienti che sanno quando si deve parlare; altri dottori versatissimi nella legge, tra i quali Stefano fu lapidato, Paolo ucciso, Pietro crocifisso, i discepoli, com'è negli Atti degli Apostoli, furono flagellati Act. 5,40 e 6,22.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Stefano, servo di Dio, mentre lo lapidavano i Giudei, vide i cieli aperti: li vide e ci entrò:

Lettura 8
Vediamo chi sia questo Zaccaria, figlio di Barachia: perché troviamo (nella Scrittura) parecchi Zaccaria. Ma a toglierci ogni possibilità di errore, si aggiunge: «Che uccideste fra il tempio e l'altare» Matth. 23,35. Ho letto in diversi (autori) opinioni diverse e devo esporle tutte. Alcuni dicono che questo Zaccaria, figlio di Barachia, sia l'undecimo dei dodici profeti, e il nome di suo padre vi è conforme ma ch'egli sia stato ucciso fra il tempio e l'altare la Scrittura non lo dice; tanto più che ai suoi tempi del tempio restavano forse appena delle rovine. Altri vogliono che si tratti di Zaccaria, padre di Giovanni Battista, fondandosi su certe fantasie di apocrifi, che vorrebbero sia stato ucciso per aver annunziata la venuta del Salvatore.

Altri vogliono che questo sia il Zaccaria che Joas re di Giuda fece uccidere fra il tempio e l'altare, come narra la storia dei Re. Ma è da osservare, che questo Zaccaria non è già figlio di Barachia, bensì figlio del sacerdote Jojada: ond'è che la Scrittura dice: «Joas non si ricordò che suo padre Joiada gli fece del bene» 2Par. 24,22. Accordandosi qui dunque e il nome di Zaccaria e il luogo dell'uccisione, vediamo perché è detto figlio di Barachia e non di Joiada? Barachia nella nostra lingua significa: Benedetto dal Signore, onde con questo nome Ebraico viene indicata la giustizia dei sacerdote Jojada. Nel Vangelo che usano i Nazareni, invece di «figlio di Barachia» troviamo scritto «figlio di Jojada».

In the year of our Lord 415, in the reign of the Emperor Honorius, a Priest named Lucian, (dwelling at Caphargamala, about twenty miles from Jerusalem,) received a message from God, in consequence of which discovery was made of the bodies of the Saints Stephen the First Martyr, Gamaliel, Nicodemus, and Abibon, (the son of Gamaliel,) which had long been lying unknown and unheeded. Lucian was asleep when Gamaliel appeared to him in a dream as a tall comely old man of worshipful presence, told him where the bodies were lying, and bade him go to John, Patriarch of Jerusalem, and deal with him that they might have more honourable burial.

When the Patriarch of Jerusalem heard it, he called together Bishops and Priests from the neighbouring cities, and betook himself to the place, where he found the tombs hewn in the rock, and a right sweet savour flowing forth from them. The thing being noised abroad, a great multitude of people came together, and many that were sick and weak of diverse diseases returned home whole. The sacred body of holy Stephen was then carried with great pomp to the holy Church of Zion. Under the Emperor Theodosius the Younger it was taken to Constantinople and during the Popedom of Pelagius I. it was brought to Rome, where it has been laid in the sepulchre of the holy Martyr Lawrence in the Veranian Field.

When the Bishop Projectus brought some reliques of that most glorious Martyr Stephen to Tibilis, a great multitude came together and went out to meet the shrine. A blind woman prayed to be led to the Bishop who was bearing the hallowed deposit. She laid on the reliques the flowers which she was carrying, took them up again, touched her eyes with them and forthwith saw. She went forward rejoicing, at the head of the amazed procession, choosing her own path, and needing no more that any should lead her. I remember also the shrine of this same Martyr which hath been placed in the town of Synica, hard by this city of Hippo. Lucillus, Bishop of that place, was carrying it, with a multitude going before and following after when, all of a sudden, by bearing this hallowed burden, he was healed of the emerods, from which he was even then suffering, and which were being treated by a physician, an intimate friend of his, who was about to cut them.

We have already remarked that the Lord's words, Fill ye up the measure of your fathers, 32, refer in the first place to Himself, Whom the Jews afterwards put to death. In a secondary sense it may likewise be applied to His disciples, of whom He saith, Behold, I send unto you Prophets, and wise men, and Scribes. Here observe that, according to the Apostle writing to the Corinthians, 1 Cor. xii. 4, there are diversities of gifts among Christ's followers. Some are Prophets of that which is to come; some are wise men, who know the due season for rebuke and exhortation; some are Scribes learned in the law. And of these they stoned Stephen, slew Paul with the sword, crucified Peter, and scourged the Disciples mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles. v, 40; xvi, 23.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

℟. Stephen, the servant of God, who was stoned by the Jews, saw the heavens opened he saw and entered in.

Reading 8
It is a subject of dispute among commentators who is meant by Zacharias the son of Barachias. We read of several persons of the name of Zacharias. But here, in order to prevent any mistake, it is particularly said, Whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. I have read various opinions in various places upon this question, and I will give each. First, some hold that Zacharias the son of Barachias is the eleventh of the twelve Minor Prophets; and this opinion is supported by the father's name. But the Bible nowhere telleth us that this Prophet was slain between the temple and the altar; and it is hardly possible that he can have been, for in his time it could scarcely be said that even the ruins of the temple were in existence. Secondly, others maintain that this Zacharias was Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist. This interpretation is derived from the dreams of the Apocryphal Gospels, wherein it is asserted that he was martyred for preaching Christ's coming.

A third school will have it that this Zacharias, the son of Barachias, was that Zacharias of whom we read, in Chron. xxiv. 22, that he was slain by Joash, king of Judah, between the temple and the altar. Against this it is to be remarked, that that Zacharias was not the son of Barachias, but of Jehoiada the priest; whence it is written, Joash remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him. The question therefore ariseth, if this opinion be true, why, the name and manner of death both agreeing with this explanation, Zacharias is called the son, not of Jehoiada, but of Barachias. In Hebrew, Barachias signifieth the Blessed of the Lord, and Jehoiada proves his Righteousness. In the Gospel used by the Nazarenes the name of Jehoiada is used instead of Barachias.

San Doménico Confessore, Fondatore dell'Ordine dei Frati Predicatori: si riposò in pace il sei di questo mese.
Nel villaggio di Ars, della diocesi di Belley, in Frància, il natale di san Giovànni Battista Maria Vianney, Prete e Confessore, insigne nell'esercizio dell'ufficio parrocchiale: il Papa Pio undecimo lo inserì nel numero dei Santi, ne fissò la festa il nove di questo mese, e lo dichiarò celeste Patrono di tutti i parroci.
Così pure a Salonicco il natale del beato Aristàrco, discepolo e compagno indivisibile di san Pàolo Apostolo, del quale lo stesso Paolo scrive ai Colossési: « Vi saluta Aristàrco, mio compagno di prigione». Egli dal medesimo Apostolo fu ordinato Vescovo dei Tessalonicési, e finalmente, sotto Nerone, dopo lunghi combattimenti, coronato da Cristo, si riposò.
A Roma santa Perpètua, la quale, battezzata dal beato Piètro Apostolo, convertì alla fede di Cristo Nazàrio, suo figlio, ed Africàno, suo marito, e seppellì molti corpi di santi Martiri: finalmente, ripiena di meriti per buone opere, passò al Signore.

August 4th 2026, the 20th day of the Moon, is commemorated the holy Confessor Dominic [of Guzman,] Founder of the Order of Friars Preachers, very famous for his holiness and teaching. He remained always a virgin, and through his wonderful gifts raised three dead men to life. By his preaching he crushed heresies, and grounded many in a religious and godly life. He fell asleep in peace, [in the year 1221,] upon the sixth day of this present month of August. But his feast is kept upon this day by command of Pope Paul IV.
On the same 4th day of August, were born into the better life:

At Thessalonica, [in the first century,] the blessed Aristarchus, the disciple and close companion of the holy Apostle Paul, concerning whom the same Apostle writeth unto the Colossians, (iv, 10) "Aristarchus, my fellow-prisoner, saluteth you." He was by the same Apostle ordained Bishop of the Thessalonians, and after long contendings under Nero he was crowned by Christ, and fell asleep.
